Father Mbaka Dismissed From Adoration Ministry

by Folarin Kehinde October 3, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Popular Nigerian Catholic Priest, Rev Fr. Ejike Mbaka has been removed as the spiritual director of Adoration Ministries Enugu Nigeria (AMEN) and sent to the monastery.

His removal was made by the Catholic Bishop of Enugu Diocese, Calistus Onaga in line with the disciplinary action against Father Mbaka over comments he made.

Mbaka personally made the announcement during the Sunday mass and disclosed that the Bishop had appointed Fr Anthony Amadi as the new Spiritual Director of AMEN, to be assisted by other unnamed priests.

“So while I proceed to the Monastery to continue with the remaining disciplinary exercises, as directed; I wouldn’t know how long; but the Church has appointed Fr Anthony Amadi, one of us, to be overseeing all affairs of the Ministry, to be assisted by other priests, pending my return, by the grace of God,” Mbaka stated.

Mbaka had earlier explained that the ministry had not fully opened, pointing out that some programmes including the weekly Friday all-night adoration remained suspended till further notice.

According to him, “our Sunday Masses and Wednesdays’ ‘E No Dey Again’ programmes would continue, while others such as Friday all-night adoration remains suspended”.

Mbaka had barely mentioned the new priest’s, name when the congregation erupted into, shouting “we say no,” “we say no,” we no gree and started carrying green leaves, thereby forcing Fr Mbaka to quickly conclude the Mass.

Thousands of faithful had excitedly thronged the prayer center from far and wide following an earlier wide announcement that Bishop Onaga had lifted ban on the ministry.

They were however left dejected following the latest development.

The Bishop of Enugu Diocese only allowed Father Mbaka to celebrate Mass at the centre so that he would personally make the announcement.

Burkina Faso Protesters Burn French Embassy

by Folarin Kehinde October 3, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Citizens of Burkina Faso have attacked and burnt the French Embassy in protest over France’s involvement in the nation’s affairs.

Protesters in support of the new military leader of Burkina Faso, Ibrahim Traore stormed the country’s capital, Ouagadougou and burnt the French embassy there.

The protesters accused France of hiding the ousted military leader, Lt Col Paul-Henri Sandaogo Damiba.

The whereabout of Damiba is unclear but French authorities have denied any involvement and condemned the violence.

Meanwhile, protesters shouted angry, anti-France slogans including: “We don’t want France anymore. We no longer want France to be in Africa” and “Down with France.”

Some added: “We call on Russia” and suggested Russian intervention was preferable to any involvement by their former colonisers.

One demonstrator said: “We want frank cooperation with Russia. That’s why we hold the three flags. The Russian, Malian and Burkinabe flags.”

Another explained: “Damiba has failed and the people are not happy.  And we are indeed going out today to show the whole world that we do not want this man anymore.

“At the moment, we have very seasoned soldiers who have taken power and we will support them until terrorism is driven out of our country.”

Damiba had promised to tackle jihadist violence but critics accused him of being too close to France which maintains a military presence in the region.

French spokeswoman Anne-Claire Legendre said condemned the violence against the embassy and said the protests were “the work of hostile demonstrators, manipulated by a campaign of disinformation against us.”

Ngige Walks Out Of FG/ASUU Dialogue

by Folarin Kehinde October 3, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige stormed out of a meeting between stakeholders of the Federal Government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), been spearheaded by the speaker of the House of Representatives, Femi Gbajibiamila.

The meeting which had representatives from both FG and ASUU dissolved into a heated argument, climaxing in the exit of Chris Ngige.

Ngige before leaving the meeting, accused the ASUU president, Professor Emmanuel Osodeke of encouraging Nigerians to vote out the All-Progressives Congress (APC) In the upcoming elections.

The speaker of the House of Representatives, Gbajabiamila called on the aggrieved parties including Chris Ngige and Emmanuel Osodeke to sheathe their swords and shift ground in the interest of the country and that of the students who have been away from their studies for seven months.

When Osodeke talked, he lamented that the salaries of the lecturers are paid from the office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, which is not the order of the day in other countries.

Osodeke said, “Is there any country in the world where salaries of lectures are paid from the office of Accountant-General of the Federation? Where is the idea of the law? Let’s be patriotic to Nigeria. Are they using it in Central Bank (of Nigeria)? Are they using it in NITDA?

“So let’s respect the peculiarity rather than trying to put all of us into a small hole. And finally, sir! No country in the world will harvest the data of the academics, package it and give it to a foreign company. No country in the world! Thank you.”

Osodeke also told Ngige while leaving that he can go and tell lies to the public.

Nigeria Must Return Back To True Federalism – Ayo Opadokun

by Folarin Kehinde October 3, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

A Former Secretary of the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO), Chief Ayo Opadokun, has advocated that region must now form the component units of the federation in Nigeria, saying the country must return to true federalism for it to develop.

He said this in a lecture he delivered at the forum organised by the Coalition of Yoruba Self-Determination Groups held in Ibadan. A copy of the lecture was made available to our correspondent on Sunday.

Opadokun also said Nigeria must reverse the Independence/Federal Constitution which it practiced and made it the Giant of Africa after the independence.

He said each region must decide the number of states it would have and states should decide the number of councils it wants to have.

According to Opadokun, “Nigeria, like Germany, Argentina, Canada, Brazil, Iraq, Indian, Malaysia, Russia, Pakistan, USA must now be a federation of regions.”

He said, “The Independence Constitution, upon which Nigeria secured her Independence, allocated spheres of influence to the regional and central governments, which made the component units independent and equal, while they were coordinating at the centre on an equal basis.

“The Central Government was not the boss of the component units. The Federal Constitution in practice enabled all governments to compete healthily as they provided services to the citizens, using the natural and human resources in their regions to improve the standard of living of their people.

“It’s an undeniable fact that the spectacular achievements recorded under the Federal Constitutional Governance remain unmatched and unsurpassed milestones of Nigeria’s identity till date. For example, the Western Region under Chief Obafemi Awolowo recorded spectacular feats summarised in his 1959 valedictory address.

“The Independence/Federal Constitution, under which Nigeria prospered and was considered the Giant of Africa, is the antidote to our stunted growth and political instability. To that Independence/Federal Constitution, we must return for a reversal of our misfortune.”

He said Nigerians must choose to either continue with the unitary system that the government is practicing in the name of federalism or return to true federalism before the 2023 elections.

He also described as absurd the refusal of the Federal Government to grant Amotekun the approval to bear sophisticated weapons to protect the Yoruba people while the same government gave the Kaduna militia the right to obtain weapons.

Speaking on the insecurity in the country, Opadokun said the Nigerian government had failed woefully to discharge its responsibility of protecting the people.

“While the Yoruba people prompted their governors to establish a state outfit to give them some security respite, the Central Government has failed to give the states approvals to buy ammunitions that will empower the Amotekun outfit to protect citizens. Conversely, the Nigerian State is ready to deploy Nigeria Police officers or civilian outfits (like Tompolo) with guns and ammunition to protect inanimate objects,” he added.

Lagos Independence Rally Abandoned As Citizens March For Peter Obi #1MillionManMarch

by Folarin Kehinde October 1, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Few individuals were seen at the Lagos Independence day rally, as many took to the streets for the Lagos Obedient 4 Million Man March.

There was a low turnout at the Lagos Independence Day rally, which held at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Lagos, on Saturday.

Governor, Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu led other government functionaries and party leaders to the venue of the celebration.

Many of the pavilions at the expansive stadium were unoccupied. The VIP pavilions had several sections empty even as a small section of the stadium was occupied by party supporters.

Apart from Sanwo-Olu, those in attendance included the Deputy Governor, Dr. Kadiri Obafemi Hamzat, the State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Cornelius Ojelabi, his predecessor, Mr. Tunde Balogun; former Minister of State for Defence, Senator Musiliu Obanikoro, members of the diplomatic community, among others.

But as many Nigerians shunned the national event and a significant turning point in Nigeria’s journey, the #ObiDatti rally pulled major crowd across the country as many supporters of the Labour Party (LP) Presidential Candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, defied the early morning shower and security to hold the 4million- man rally in Lagos.

The rally was held simultaneously in Ikeja, FESTAC, Surulere, Lagos-Island-Lekki axis as many youths trooped out in large numbers to show solidarity and support for the candidature of Obi whom they said remains the hope of the country.

Even though a Federal High Court in Lagos had earlier barred the Obi supporters popularly called Obi-dients from gathering at the Lekki Tollgate for the rally but the turnout was still massive as people expressed their love for Peter Obi.

The development triggered massive gridlock along the ever busy Lekki-Epe expressway.

Similarly in Ikeja, the Obi-dients converged on the Arch. Vining Memorial Church ground in Ikeja GRA, marching through Ikeja-Under-bridge/Computer Village and shutting down the axis.

Google Celebrates Nigeria’s Independence On Website

by Folarin Kehinde October 1, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Multi-billion-dollar search company Google has changed its homepage to celebrate the Nigerian Independence.

Google put a waving Nigerian flag on its homepage, alongside writing the company’s name in green and white colors.

When a user searches anything on the website, the Nigerian Flag is displayed at the top right corner of the google homepage.

Google usually celebrates notable events in the history of nations and individuals around the world. The google doodle is the avenue used for the celebration. Today, it was dedicated to celebrating the Nigerian independence.

Nigeria celebrates her 62nd independence anniversary today, the 1st of October 2022, after being granted independence by the Britain on same day in 1960.

Exactly 62 years ago, on October 1, 1960, Nigeria gained independence from the British Empire and was added to the growing list of independent nations which the United Kingdom had set aside to grant independence to become a sovereign state.

Nigerians celebrated this historic break from colonialism across the country. There were lots of celebrations and jubilation within the country, especially in Lagos.

The historic day was celebrated in grand style, from fireworks to dance troupes, masquerades, and even a state banquet where dignitaries mingled and danced. People rejoiced together regardless of ethnic and religious background, while Nigerians in the Diaspora joined in a unified celebration of the independence of Nigeria.

INVESTIGATION: How Governor Dave Umahi Swindles Ebonyi People, Awards Contract To Family Members

by Folarin Kehinde October 1, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The family of the outgoing governor of Ebonyi State and senatorial candidate of the All Progressive Party, Mr. David Umahi has defrauded the people of the state severely, as exposed by an investigation by Secret Reporters.

The governor gave the contract for constructing a generator house at the state international airport to AUSTAC INTEGRATED SERVICES, a company owned by his younger brother, Austin Chukwu Umahi, while they were pretentiously running for the senate ticket against each other.

The contract, titled “CONSTRUCTION OF PROPOSED GENERATOR HOUSE AT EBONYI STATE INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT,” was awarded on June 25, 2022, by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development for Concession, under the leadership of Eng. Nweze Fidelis Kings, commissioner of the ministry and Chairman of the Nigerian Society of Engineers, Ebonyi State Chapter.

The contract’s total cost was N62, 932,875 (Sixty Two Million Nine Hundred and Thirty Two Thousand Eight Hundred and Seventy Five Naira), which is over three-fold of the N20, 000,000 (Twenty Million Naira) allocated for the project in the state’s 2022 budget.

Details of awarded contract with the proposed budget to Austac integrated services

Details of the final amount of the budget that was awarded to Austac INT. Services

According to documents obtained by SecretReporters, two other qualified bidders for the contract, ZIMSOK INTEGRATED SERVICES LIMITED and DIAMOND JOSHAM INTERNATIONAL LIMITED, were turned down in favor of AUSTAC INTEGRATED SERVICES, which has other family members on its board of directors, in a clear violation of section 21 (19) of the Ebonyi State Procurement Act, 2020, which states that, “Persons who have been engaged in preparing for a procurement or part of the proceedings thereof may neither bid for the procurement in question or any part thereof either as main contractor or sub-contractor nor may they cooperate in any manner with bidders in the course of preparing their tenders.”

Additionally, it is blatantly against section 21 (1) (a) (b) of the State’s Public Procurement Law, which states that all public procurement must be made through open competitive bidding; and in a manner which is transparent, timely and equitable for ensuring accountability and conformity with this Law and regulations deriving therefrom; With the aim of achieving value for money and fitness for purpose.

The contract racketeering which is evidence of lack of adherence in practice to procurement rules and compliance with the provision of the Procurement Act, is a crime frowned at by The Independent Corrupt Practices and related offenses Commission, ICPC, in the case of a senator representing Kano North, Barau Jibrin, and his family company, Sinti Nig. Ltd, which was awarded a contract by Sokoto Rima Basin Development Authority in the sum of N199,950,000 for a project to supply empowerment items in Kano North Senatorial District.

The ICPC in its report said, “The dramatis personae in the conception and implementation of public-funded projects use the influence of their office for personal aggrandizement to the detriment of the public.”

Directors of AUSTAC INTEGRATED SERVICES LTD include NWEBONYI LOUIS, AUSTIN CHUKWU UMAHI, SHARON NNENNA UMAHI, SHARON CHIDERA UMAHI, JOSHUA OBU UMAHI, JESSICA AMARACHI UMAHI, and JACSON CHUKWUNONO UMAHI. It was established on June 19, 2008, and has its address at NO 5 DIKE CLOSE OFF NTA RD, PORT HARCOURT.

The directors include 6 Umahis.

David Umahi and his younger brother, Austine Umahi contested the APC senatorial ticket of Ebonyi South Senatorial District.

The governor later emerged as the candidate of the party after allegedly substituting his name with that of his brother on a mutual ground in accordance with the new Electoral Act. Though, there were reports of a rescheduled primary election won by the governor.

Austine Umahi had won the senatorial ticket in a primary election on May 28, 2022, at Afikpo North Local Government Area Headquarters.

On June 8, Bola Tinubu defeated David Umahi and other candidates in the APC presidential primaries. Mr. Tinubu scored 1, 271 votes while Umahi got 38.

Though the administration of Umahi has some projects to its credit, Ebonyi State has remained seriously poor while government officials loot funds through bad practices such as awarding of contracts to cronies.

Northern Pentecostal Bishops Deny Endorsing Bola Tinubu

by Folarin Kehinde October 1, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Northern Pentecostal Bishops association have denied ever endorsing the the Presidential Candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Asiwaju Bola Tinubu

The clarification comes as controversy continued to trail the recent pictures of some clerics under the banner of “Northern Pentecostal Bishop” with APC presidential candidate in what appeared like a formal meeting.

Soon after, the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria, PFN, disowned the “Pentecostal Bishops Forum of Northern Nigeria,” insisting that their position on rejection of same faith Muslim-Muslim Ticket still stands.

“The PFN was not a part of the meeting with the presidential candidate that was highly politicised. We are, however, aware of the ripples in the public domain about this matter. I am speaking officially to clarify that the PFN has nothing to do with that,” the Deputy National Secretary of the PFN, Bishop David Bakare, said.

However, giving a clarification on the meeting with APC candidate, a member of the Pentecostal Bishops Forum of Northern Nigeria,” Bishop Jonas Katung, in a statement on Friday stated that the meeting was never an endorsement.

He added that his group should be commended for bringing the plight of Northern Christians to the attention of the APC presidential candidate on his choice of Muslim running mate, rather than being condemned.

“As church leaders and concerned citizens, we, as a group of Pentecostal Bishops from Northern Nigeria, the region which is most aggrieved by the same faith ticket decision of the APC, decided to engage with Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the person who is at the center of the controversy, to express the concerns and fears of the Christian community not only in Northern Nigeria but the country as a whole and to give him an opportunity to explain his decision.

“As Arc Bishop John Praise aptly captures it at the interface, “This is in line with the biblical principle as contained in John 7:51 that no one should be condemned without first giving him a hearing, a principle that is also encapsulated in the constitution of our country,” he said.

He also stated that during the meeting with Tinubu, notable and respected church leaders such as Arc Bishop John Praise, the national vice president of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), and Rev Danjuma Byang all spoke to highlight the marginalisation and injustice meted out to Christians in the north over the years, which created mistrust among northern Christians about the APC’s Muslim-Muslim ticket.

Burkina Faso Coup: Military Officers Remove Leader Damiba

by Folarin Kehinde October 1, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

An army captain in Burkina Faso has announced on national television that he has ousted military leader, Lt. Col. Paul-Henri Damiba.

Ibrahim Traore cited Lt. Col. Damiba’s inability to deal with an Islamist insurgency as the reason for his ouster.

He also announced that borders were closed indefinitely and all political activities were suspended.

Lt Col Damiba’s junta overthrew an elected government in January, 2022, citing a failure to halt Islamist attacks.

But his administration has also not been able to quell the jihadist violence. On Monday, 11 soldiers were killed when they were escorting a convoy of civilian vehicles in the north of the country.

Earlier on Friday, Lt Col Damiba urged the population to remain calm after heavy gunfire was heard in parts of the capital.

More than a dozen armed soldiers – most with their faces covered – appeared on the Radio-Television broadcaster shortly before 20:00 local time.

“Faced with the deteriorating situation, we tried several times to get Damiba to refocus the transition on the security question,” said the statement signed by Traore.

“Damiba’s actions gradually convinced us that his ambitions were diverting away from what we set out to do. We decided this day to remove Damiba,” it said.

A curfew from 21:00 to 05:00 was also announced.

Before dawn, shots and explosions were heard in the capital, Ouagadougou, some of them coming from near the presidential palace and main military barracks.

After sunrise, the normally bustling city was largely deserted, with soldiers on the streets blocking some roads and guarding key strategic points.

State television had stopped broadcasting and more gunfire was heard later in the day.

Lt Col Damiba said there was a “confused situation” created by “mood swings” among some soldiers as rumours of a coup intensified.

Urging people to remain calm and avoid social media speculation, the military leader said there were “negotiations under way to bring back calm and serenity”.

In January, Lt Col Damiba ousted President Roch Kaboré, saying that he had failed to deal with growing militant Islamist violence.

“We have more than what it takes to win this war,” the junta chief said when he was sworn in as president in February.

But many citizens do not feel any safer and there have been protests in different parts of the country this week.

On Friday afternoon, some protesters took to the capital’s streets calling for the removal of Lt Col Damiba.

The Islamist insurgency broke out in Burkina Faso in 2015, leaving thousands dead and forcing an estimated two million people from their homes.

The country has experienced eight successful coups since independence in 1960.
