FG Withdraws Order To Open Universities Immediately

by Folarin Kehinde September 27, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Government (FG) has withdrawn its order given to vice-chancellors, pro-chancellors and university governing council to immediately open universities.

This was contained in a circular made public by the National Universities Commission (NUC).

LEADINGREPORTERS earlier reported that the Federal Government in a circular titled NUC/ES/138/Vol.64/135 dated September 23, 2022 ordered Vice-Chancellors and Pro-Chancellors to immediately reopen universities.

The FG had asked the pro chancellors and vice-chancellors to ensure that the striking lecturers resume and commence lectures immediately.

The FG’s directive had caused confusion for the university management as the vice-chancellors were unsure of how to go about the decision.

However, the Federal Government in another circular tagged NUC/ES/138/Vol.64/136, which was also signed by the Director, Finance and Account of the NUC, Sam Onazi, the commission withdrew the order.

Though it did not explain why, the letter tagged, “withdrawal of circular NUC/ES/138/Vol.64/135 dated September 23, 2022” partly read, “I have been directed to withdraw the NUC Circular Ref: NUC/ES/138/Vol.64/135, and dated September 23, 2022 on the above.

“Consequently, the said circular stands withdrawn. All pro-chancellors and chairmen of governing councils, as well as vice-chancellors of federal universities are to please note. Further development and information would be communicated to all relevant stakeholders.

“Please accept the assurances of the Executive Secretary’s warmest regards

Liz Truss Under Fire As British Pound Fall To Record Low

by Folarin Kehinde September 26, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Liz Truss the new British Prime Minister who replace Boris Johnson has come under sharp criticism after the pound hit record low against the dollar.

This was due to last week’s huge tax-cutting budget.

The main opposition Labour Party lambasted Truss for the massive spending plans, which some economists warn could further fuel inflation.

Labour’s finance spokeswoman Rachel Reeves described the situation as a “national emergency” and likened Truss and her chancellor of the exchequer Kwasi Kwarteng to “two desperate gamblers in a casino chasing a losing run”.

“The message from financial markets was clear on Friday and this morning that message is even more stark: sterling is down. That means higher prices, as the costs of imports rise,” she said.

“The cost of government borrowing is up. That means that more taxpayers money will go into paying the interest on our government debt.

“And in turn that means the cost of borrowing for working people will now go up to with higher mortgage repayments,” she told Labour’s annual conference in Liverpool, northwest England.

Britain has been facing a cost-of-living crisis with soaring energy prices coupled with inflation and wage stagnation.

Kwarteng was appointed finance minister by Truss earlier this month after she took office following a leadership battle to replace Boris Johnson as head of the ruling Conservative Party.

On Friday Kwarteng unveiled a multi-billion-pound package to support households and businesses.

He also slashed taxes, bringing forward a plan to cut the lowest rate of income tax and reducing the highest to 40 percent from 45 percent to kickstart the economy

But investors were spooked by the huge amount of borrowing likely needed for the package, which critics said would benefit the rich far more than the poorest hit by the cost-of-living crisis.

The cost of the energy support measures alone have been calculated at £60 billion ($65 billion) for only six months.

But economists estimate the whole tax package at between £100-200 billion.

The pound on Monday struck an all-time low at $1.0350 before regaining some ground to stand at $1.0728 around 1115 GMT.

The pound had already suffered a series of 37-year lows against the greenback this month on UK recession fears propelled by high inflation.

APC Allegedly Impose Stickers On Lagos Keke Drivers

by Folarin Kehinde September 26, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

A viral video which showed the All Progressives Congress (APC) stickers being imposed on tricycle aka ‘keke napep’ riders in Lagos has gone viral.

On Wednesday, a video of Lagos State Park and Garages Management Committee (wrongly referred to as the Lagos chapter of the National Union of Road Transport Workers) agents imposing stickers of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on tricycle riders went viral.

According to the video, each sticker was being sold for N500, and money gathered from the sales would be used to support the campaign of Bola Ahmed-Tinubu, the presidential aspirant of the APC, and Babajide Sanwo-Olu, the incumbent Governor of Lagos State, who is seeking re-election.

The sticker contains notably the pictures of Tinubu and his running mate, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo.

Reacting in a counter video, MC Oluomo, chairman, Lagos State Park and Garages Management Committee, said what was captured on camera was false and a ploy by the oppositions, especially the Igbo community, to blackmail the APC.

To ascertain the claims, FIJ visited Ajah Bus Stop, where the incident happened, to speak with tricycle riders who operate there.

A tricycle rider who plies the Ajah-Badore/Langbasa road told FIJ that the levying happened on Tuesday after the operators paid for their usual tickets for the day.

“Around noon on Wednesday, we were asked to pay for an APC sticker for N500. We were mandated to pay for it. There were no options, as the agberos themselves pasted the stickers on our tricycles,” he said.

“The purchase of the sticker was mandatory and the drivers who refused had their tricycles seized. Most of the operators who paid for it that day did so to avoid losing the day’s pay,” said another tricycle rider.

“They told us it was from the state union and there was nothing we could do about it. There was a revolt, but it didn’t last because we were compelled to do the bidding of the NURTW and the agberos, just like every other time.”

A driver brought the sticker and told FIJ he had bought it to avoid trouble from the state union.

“Not buying it would have been a terrible decision because they were on our necks. They would even mark your face should you insist, and do all they can to hinder your business,” he said.

“A lot of us here operate in fear.”

“The state union didn’t even give us the choice to accept or reject it. Some of their workers simply went ahead to paste it on my tricycle and I had to pay,” one driver said.

“Some drivers who refused the stickers were beaten and had their seats removed.

“As we speak now, about two drivers who stood their grounds against paying for the stickers were taken away by the state union workers. They were taken to their chairman’s office and they haven’t been seen since then.

“They said the sticker was to fund the state campaign and we had to pay.

“Imagine that they are trying to advertise their candidates to us and we have to pay for it. In saner climes, they would be the ones to give people money, but rather, people are paying to help them advertise their candidates.”

Reacting to Mc Oluomo’s claim that the Igbo were behind the stickers in a bid to blackmail the party, a driver said, “The claim is absolutely false. He is only making up these claims to blackmail the ethnic group.

“How did the Igbo get the printer? Why would they do such? What would they intend to achieve? All these are lies to distract people from their true acts.

“Besides, they are simply trying to spoil the names of the Igbo. Does it make any sense that the Igbo brought the idea while the Yoruba are selling it?

“More than 50 operators were made to collect the sticker in fear.

“Here in this park, there are now over 500 tricycles because of the okada ban. So it’s a good way for them to make money.”

Federal Government Orders VC’s To Open Varsities Immediately

by Folarin Kehinde September 26, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Government (FG) of Nigeria has ordered all Vice-chancellors to open Universities that have been closed since the commencement of the ASUU strike.

FG through the National Universities Commission has ordered vice-chancellors to re-open schools and allow students resume lectures.

This was made known in a letter signed by the Director, Finance and Accounts of the NUC, Sam Onazi, on behalf of the Executive Secretary of the commission, Professor Abubakar Rasheed.

The letter was addressed to all vice-chancellors; Pro-Chancellors and chairmen of governing councils of federal universities.

“Ensure that ASUU members immediately resume/commence lectures; Restore the daily activities and routines of the various University campuses”, the letter partly reads.

ASUU had been on strike since February 14 to press home the demand for improved funding for universities, a review of salaries for lecturers, among other issues.

Several meetings between ASUU and the Federal Government have ended in a deadlock.

Consequently, the Federal Government went to court to challenge the strike.

The government through its counsel, James Igwe, prayed the court for an interlocutory injunction restraining ASUU from taking further steps as regards the strike, pending the determination of the substantive suit.

The counsel to the Federal Government James Igwe on Wednesday prayed the court to order the striking varsity lecturers to in the interim, return to work, pending the determination of the substantive suit before the court.

He maintained that the matter was not only urgent, but of a great national interest as millions of students have been at home for over seven months.

“Sections 47 of the Trade Dispute Act, TDA, gives your lordship the power to direct that no worker should continue to embark on strike pending when the applications are heard and determined,”,

Igwe said there was need for the matter to be expeditiously determined to enable university students to return to school, adding that failure to call off the strike would cause irreparable damage to not only the students but also to the nation.

According to him, since the dispute between FG and lectures was already before the court for adjudication, it would be proper and in the interest of justice for the strike to be suspended.

In his ruling, Justice Hamman held that the application was meritorious and deserved to be granted by the court.

While dismissing objections ASUU raised through its lawyer, Mr Femi Falana, SAN, the court held that the strike action was detrimental to public university students that cannot afford to attend private tertiary institutions.

“The balance of convenience tilts in favour of the applicant.

“I hold that this application is meritorious and this application is granted”, Justice Hamman ruled.

The court, thereafter, issued an order, restraining ASUU, “whether by themselves, members, agents, privies or howsoever called, from taking further steps and doing any act in continuance of the strike action, pending the hearing and determination of the suit filed.”

Reno Omokri Berates Wike Over PDP Comments, Lists Fallacies

by Folarin Kehinde September 24, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Reno Omokri, a chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has lambasted some claims and allegations Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers State made against the embattled National Chairman of the party, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, in his media interview yesterday.

The Nigerian author also debunked other allegations made against the presidential candidate of the party, Atiku Abubakar.

Omokri raised 10 issues in a reaction to Wike’s claims and allegations, which he described as “fallacies from Wike’s media chat on the artificial PDP crisis,” said only the constitution of the party should determine the fate of the Senator Ayu, and not any other consideration.

He said, “the Governor of Rivers state, and an esteemed member of our party, Barrister Ezenwo Nyesom Wike addressed the press on current issues within our party, and in the encounter he made some utterances which are fallacious.

“I believe he did not lie. It may just be a case that, because of the task of running a very successful state, like Rivers, his memory may have failed him. So I have written the below to refresh his memory.”

While he maintained that embattled National Chairman, Senator Ayu, never promised to resign if a Northern Presidential candidate is elected, reminded Wike that Ayu had rather openly said “on video that he would resign if the PDP asked him to.”

Omokri then queried, “Since the PDP NEC passed a vote of confidence in him, why should he resign?”

Among the 10 fallacies he claimed Wike made in his media chat were that; the PDP did not jettison zoning in favour of the North adding that zoning was jettisoned in favour of the South. “The last PDP President is from the South. By virtue of the party’s Constitution and tradition, the next President should come from the North.

“If Wike has evidence that the Peoples Democratic Party Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, is not a trustworthy character, he should provide such to the police and other law enforcement agencies.”

The Rivers State governor, had earlier in his media briefing, alleged the Ayu manipulated the process of the party’s presidential primary/national convention in favour of Atiku, claiming that he called several aspirants to withdraw for Atiku.

But Omokri faulted the assertion adding that PDP presidential primaries were not flawed. “They were transparent and watched live on TV by Nigerians. A winner emerged. Many also did not win. Saraki, Tambuwal, Mohammed, Hayatudeen, Dele Momodu, Anyim, Fayose, Emmanuel, Momodu and others have not complained of any untoward happenings.”

On other issues, he said “If the Peoples Democratic Party Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu, convened any illegal meetings in the house of retired generals, then proof of that should be tendered by the one making the allegations.

“How can a man who almost single handedly installed the last two PDP chairmen and many members of the NEC call the same party “arrogant”? If an engineer builds a house and calls it ugly, what is he inevitably saying about himself?

“Wike says Waziri Atiku is surrounding himself with people without much political value, why is he resisting joining the PCC. We need Wike because he obviously has much political value.”

Omokri, however, noted that no member of the party was more important but every member of the party was important.

“The Peoples Democratic Party has a NEC. The NEC can discipline any member according to the Constitution of the party. Every member of the party is a vital picture, but no member is the big picture.

“The PDP Constitution should determine the fate of the Peoples Democratic Party Chairman, Senator Iyorchia Ayu.”

National Industrial Court Lacks Evidence On Court Ruling – ASUU

by Folarin Kehinde September 24, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Following the National Industrial Court (NIC) ruling that members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) quit their strike and go back to work, ASUU has commented that the industrial court lacks evidence to give such ruling.

ASUU said that the Industrial Court lacks the evidence to back its claims that Nigerian students would lose many lives changing opportunities due to increment of age caused by the ceaseless ASUU strike.

The union made this known in the court documents filed before the Court of Appeal on Friday to challenge the ruling of the National Industrial Court which ordered them to end the lingering strike and resume classes on Wednesday.

The appeal which counsel to ASUU, Femi Falana made available to the public was also accompanied by a request for stay of execution on the ruling by Justice Polycarp Hamman.

The point being made is that, even where the lost academic semesters/sessions are covered upon resumption, the increase in the age of these students who are being deprived of the opportunity to complete their studies as and when due cannot be reversed. Section 2 (2) of the National Youth Service Corps Act for example prohibits any person who is over the age of thirty (30) at the date of graduation from being enlisted into the Service Corps,” the National Industrial court said among other things while delivering its interlocutory judgement.

Reacting, the striking university lecturers contended, “There was no evidence before the lower court about the age of these innocent students being denied of the opportunity to complete their studies.

“Even though the issue of National Youth Service was raised suo motu the Learned Trial Judge did not invite parties to address him on it.

“The Learned Trial Judge made a case for the Respondents by relying on extraneous matters and thereby violated the fundamental right of the Appellant to fair hearing.”

LEADINGREPORTERS Wrote about the intention of ASUU to appeal the judgement of the industrial court following its order for ASUU members to resume work.

St Nyesom Wike: The Attention Seeking Champion Of Opportunistic Justice

by Folarin Kehinde September 24, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

By Dr. Ugoji Egbujo

Gov Wike spends days and nights hugging TV cameras and lamenting profusely about injustice in the PDP.

But he doesn’t tell his audience and backup singers that the deciding injury happened when Atiku jilted him for Okowa.

After all, Wike, who refused Power shift in 2015 to stubbornly succeed another Ikwerre man in Rivers state, rebuffing all equitable efforts to transfer power to other zones, has no moral right to discuss power rotation.

It’s comical watching Wike preach sermons on equity and power rotation.

Rivers state cried for power rotation in 2015. Had Atiku chosen Wike, Ayu would have been acceptable, and anybody demanding Ayu’s resignation would have met Wike’s venom.

Today, Wike wants Ayu booted out so he can regain control of the party with another lackey and fix a leash on the candidate.

When Wike discusses the current power structure in the PDP, he deliberately omits Gov Okowa and mentions only Atiku, Ayu and Tambuwal. Okowa isn’t thuggish, so Wike won’t reckon with him.

Well, he has even declared on TV that Okowa paid Atiku. Blackmailing fellow governors means boldness.

The only saint in the PDP is Wike, who wooed northern delegates with his academic credentials rather than money.

Clowning is taking centre stage as diligence. Hypocrisy now wears garish suits and roams as the champion of social justice, ready to dance in self-adulation.

Opportunism has joined the parade, and it marches around as equity croaking for inclusiveness. Rascality has adorned the mask of courage, and it is more than willing to guttersnipe, blackmail and tarnish.

When will the charade end? And who knows where Wike and his political gang will meet this weekend? They have been to Madrid and Turkey.

They have been to London too many times. They could be flying to California to continue their fight for justice for the ordinary man.

These days, it appears the fight for the ordinary man is best done in shiny suits with a backup choir singing hallelujah as the god of small things lobs bricks at his political opponents.

The last time Ortom appeared on Tv, he wore a crazy-coloured suit.

If Wike were interested in true justice, he would have supported the call for power to shift not just to the South but to the Southeast.

But Wike, who champions self-interest as justice, wouldn’t have that.

Wike rightly insists a northerner shouldn’t succeed a northerner, but did he ever wonder why a man from the South-south should rule when a man from south South ruled the last time power came down south?

Why didn’t he remember that his zone had produced a president? And since he claims he is not Igbo, and couldn’t have hidden under the Igbo presidency project to push his ambitions, he ought not to have contested.

Why can’t Wike see that his failure to come all out for equity, his willingness to shortchange the Southeast, was the main reason the ticket was thrown open? Hadn’t Wike preached electability instead of inclusion and equity when equity meant Southeast or Igbo presidency?

Wike submitted to the primaries, contested and lost, yet he wouldn’t even want another qualified Igbo man to be vice president.

If Wike were fighting for Justice, shouldn’t he have fought for his friend Ikpeazu PhD or another member of his gang to be VP? Wike’s idea of justice is underlined by opportunism and self-service. Wike fought for half a power shift because with Rivers’ financial muscle, Wike would have been the clear favourite and beneficiary. It has always been about Wike.

Now, Wike is restless. The first problem for Wike is that his options are few. The stooge he wants to install as governor in Rivers is wanted by the EFCC.

He must keep him in holes and caves, out of the reach of the claws of the prowling Eagle.

He must support him trenchantly to win him immunity so that the can of the investigation into the 117 billion naira money laundering matter can be kicked further down the road.

Wike can’t openly defect to the APC or Labour party. That will leave the electorate jaded.

But having sworn never to leave the PDP, it now appears he has to remain a chameleon until he chooses whether to swallow his pride or accept some face-saving crumbs and support Atiku; or stay under the umbrella and damage PDP’s presidential quest from within.

To play a mole from within will be humbling because he can’t do it loquaciously.

If he stays in the PDP and supports Asiwaju, he might strengthen Tonye Cole inadvertently and risk temporary political oblivion. Staying in the PDP and supporting Obi might leave him with the least damage politically.

The second problem is that Atiku appears fairly fed up with the antics of a loudmouthed politician who was perhaps a jobless graduate when Atiku was aspiring to be president in 1992, and who was probably a Port Harcourt political hustler / peripatetic contractor when Atiku was vice president in 1999.

If Atiku wins, Wike might reap cold political consequences even if Wike repents today. We all know the young can grow rapidly, but nothing rankles the elderly to wing-clipping vengeance more than witnessing the humiliating self-indulgent rascality of moneyed youths.

On the day of judgment, we shall know how much Rivers state spent on media during the reign of this self-acclaimed important governor.

Wike can summon and fly in the senior executives of the four largest television houses in the country to Portharcourt to watch him belch and rehash worn-out gossips.

The chat was a gossip session, an obsequious banter with riverine Jeriamiah dropping rumours and dripping nuggets of blackmail without ‘receipts’.

It has become a habit of presumptuousness, petulance and profligacy. And perfidy. When he isn’t alleging that his party chairman collected a one billion naira bribe, he is concocting tales about the romantic interests of his former boss.

When he isn’t insinuating that the presidency is engaging in anti-party activity, he alleges that Tinubu might have toyed with it.

The same hackneyed beer parlour tales he has told at project commissioning ceremonies with backup singers.

Atiku was perhaps so tired of the bickering he left the country and returned to his country home in Dubai.

As a matter of urgency, some elder statesmen must reach Atiku to accommodate Wike so that crayfish-bending circumstances don’t convert a serious governor into a flippant talebearer.

We can be our brother’s keeper.

Cristiano Ronaldo Charged By FA For Misconduct

by Folarin Kehinde September 23, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Cristiano Ronaldo, the world-famous Manchester United star, has been charged for improper behavior.

He was charged with ‘improper and/or violent conduct following the incident where he appeared to knock a mobile phone out of a supporter’s hand.

The incident happened at Everton’s Goodison Park after Manchester United’s 1-0 defeat last April.

Footage shared on social media showed the Portugal international appearing to smash a phone out of a young fan’s hand as he left the pitch and headed towards the tunnel.

Ronaldo was cautioned by police regarding the incident in August and later issued an apology to 14- year-old Jacob Harding on his Instagram account, admitting his emotions after such a damaging result had got the better of him.

United have announced they will be supporting their player in response to the charge.

A statement from the FA read: ‘Cristiano Ronaldo has been charged with a breach of FA Rule E3 for an incident that took place after Manchester United’s Premier League match against Everton FC on Saturday 9 April 2022.

‘It is alleged that the forward’s conduct after the final whistle was improper and/or violent.’
