I Can Pinpoint Bandits’ Locations With My Phone – Zamfara Governor

by Folarin Kehinde September 4, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Zamfara State governor, Dauda Lawal, has declared that he knew the exact locations of bandit leaders terrorising the state but was powerless to act because he does not control security agencies.

In a viral video that has stirred reactions, Lawal lamented that despite his knowledge of bandits’ movements, the ongoing fight against insecurity was being crippled by the fact that security chiefs in Zamfara State take directives only from Abuja.

“I swear to Almighty Allah, wherever a bandit leader is located within Zamfara State, I know it and if he goes out, I know,” he said. “With my mobile phone, I can show you where and where these bandits are today. But we cannot do anything beyond our powers.”

The visibly emotional governor added: “If today, I have the power to give orders to the security agencies, I can assure you, we will end banditry in Zamfara State within two months. Most of the time, I shed tears for my people because I can see a problem but I cannot order the security operatives to act in time.”

Lawal narrated how bandits once invaded Shinkafi Local Government Area of the State while security operatives in the state failed to respond because they had not received clearance from Abuja.

“There was a time the bandits invaded Shinkafi and the security operatives were alerted, but they refused to go simply because they were not given orders from Abuja,” he said.

He stressed that his administration has gone the extra mile to support security outfits despite lacking direct command. Recently, Zamfara distributed 150 patrol vehicles to police, army, DSS, and civil defence. Thousands of Community Protection Guards were recruited, and 2,000 hunters from Borno and Yobe hired to reinforce the fight.

Governor Lawal’s revelations came as Zamfara State reels from a fresh wave of attacks and abductions. Within the past month, over 150 people were kidnapped in multiple raids across Zurmi, Kaura Namoda, and Bukuyum LGAs, while at least 10 security operatives and three civilians were killed in an ambush in Adabka.

Protests have also erupted in Gusau, where residents accused authorities of failing to protect them from repeated bandit raids that have killed more than 100 people in recent months.

Meanwhile, President Bola Tinubu hinted at the creation of state police as a solution to Nigeria’s worsening security crisis.

“I am reviewing all the aspects of security; I have to create a state police. We are looking at that holistically. We will defeat insecurity. We must protect our children, people, livelihoods, places of worship, and recreational spaces. They can’t intimidate us,” Tinubu said on Wednesday during a meeting with Katsina State elders at the Presidential Villa.

He also announced the deployment of forest guards and the acquisition of drones to bolster operations in troubled regions.

Nigerian lawmaker renovates 80 cemeteries to mark second year in office

by Folarin Kehinde August 5, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

House of Representatives member, Kabiru Maipalace, has sponsored the renovation of 80 cemeteries in Gusau and Tsafe Local Government Areas of Zamfara.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Maipalace represents Gusau/Tsafe Federal Constituency in Zamfara.

Speaking at the inauguration of the projects in Tsafe town on Tuesday, the lawmaker said the initiative was part of his constituency projects.

“Today, we embarked on the renovation of 80 cemeteries in Gusau and Tsafe LGAs as part of my second anniversary as a second-term member, House of Representatives for Gusau and Tsafe Federal Constituency,” he said

We had noticed the dilapidated conditions of our cemeteries in various communities across my constituency.

“As human beings, we know one day, all of us are going to be buried here; therefore, we must ensure we do good to improve the conditions of our last home.”

According to him, his decision to embark on the projects followed reports of the conditions of cemeteries from the constituents.

“As we all know in Islam, we know the value of keeping cemeteries in good condition, it prevents various disasters and calamities in the society,” he added.

The lawmaker promised to give allowances to cemeteries guards and workers, as well as provide working tools for them monthly.

Maipalace appealed to his constituents to intensify prayers against insecurity.

He appealed to the people of the state to continue supporting the government’s policies and programmes to promote peace and stability in the state.

Also speaking, the District Head of Tsafe East, Aliyu Abubakar, commended the lawmaker for the initiative and described it as a welcome development.

The traditional ruler urged other political office holders to emulate the lawmaker by reaching out to their constituents to address various challenges in society.

“On behalf of Tsafe Emirate Council, I extend our appreciation to the lawmaker and his team for initiating various projects to reduce various socio-economic challenges in the society,” he said.

NAF Airstrike Foil Planned Bandit Attack in Zamfara

by Nelson Ugwuagbo June 3, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has carried out a successful air operation in Zamfara State, disrupting a planned large-scale attack by armed bandits on vulnerable communities.

According to a statement by NAF spokesperson, Air Vice Marshal Edward Gabkwet, the operation was conducted in the general area south of Mai-Galma in Maru Local Government Area. It was aimed at halting the movement of terrorists reportedly massing in preparation for an attack on nearby settlements.

Gabkwet said intelligence reports had earlier indicated that the armed group had killed several farmers and abducted civilians, including women and children.

“In response, NAF aircraft under Operation FANSAN YAMMA were deployed on an armed reconnaissance and potential rescue mission,” the statement said.

Upon arrival at the target area, over 30 motorcycles carrying armed terrorists were sighted heading into a forest. The terrorists reportedly opened fire on the aircraft, prompting a precision strike that destroyed several motorcycles and neutralised dozens of fighters.

“Ground forces were immediately mobilised to exploit the situation. They confirmed the destruction of enemy assets and the neutralisation of over 20 terrorists,” the statement added.

NAF reaffirmed its commitment to working with other security agencies to ensure the safety of citizens and the restoration of peace in the North-West region.

Journalists locked out from covering Zamfara gov’s 2025 budget presentation

by Folarin Kehinde December 5, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Security operatives barred journalists from covering the 2025 budget presentation by Governor Dauda Lawal at the Zamfara State House of Assembly in Gusau on Thursday, sparking outrage among media professionals.

The journalists, who arrived at the Assembly complex as early as 9 am were reportedly ordered to leave by security personnel just as the governor made his way into the chamber.

Efforts by the governor’s media aide, Sulaiman Bala Idris, to mediate were rebuffed by the security officers, who stood their ground despite appeals to allow the journalists to perform their constitutional duties.

“Please take it easy. I know how you feel, but I assure you we will rectify the issue,” Idris told the visibly frustrated journalists.

However, only Channels Television and TVC reporters were granted access to cover the event, further fuelling suspicions among the excluded press corps.

A source within the Assembly complex, who spoke on condition of anonymity, attributed the move to a potential quorum issue among lawmakers.

“Blocking journalists was a deliberate decision because only a few members were present in the chamber, and they did not meet the quorum required to officially receive the governor for the budget presentation,” the source alleged.

Of the 24 Assembly members, only a fraction reportedly attended the session, raising questions about the validity of the proceedings.

The exclusion of journalists has drawn criticism from media practitioners, who have called for greater respect for press freedom and transparency in government activities.

Efforts to reach the Assembly leadership for comment were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.

We don’t know number of civil servants on our payroll – Zamfara Govt

by Folarin Kehinde November 14, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Zamfara State government has lamented what it described as the alarming number of ghost workers in the State Civil Service.

The government said the situation has become worrisome and perplexing.

Addressing newsmen in Gusau, the State Head of Service, HoS, Barrister Ahmad Liman said that nobody can exactly say the number of civil servants in the state.

He further stated that the ghost workers are mainly in the health and education sectors. According to him, a verification exercise is still ongoing.

“In a particular hospital, there were 22 health workers receiving salaries, but the verification revealed that only two health workers are genuine,” the HoS lamented.

The government official explained that the verification exercise will be concluded at the end of November 2024, after which a committee on salary will be constituted.

The HoS, who is also the Chairman, Steering Committee on Verification Exercise, pointed out that the present administration in the state inherited some unsolved issues from the past government.

“It was discovered that the implementation of the 2019 minimum wage of N30,000 was faulty.

“As soon as the verification and salary committees submit their reports, the state government will implement the new minimum wage of N70,000.

“We cannot implement new minimum wage without knowing the number of civil servants in the state,” the HoS said.

Swear with Quran you’ve no connection with banditry – Matawalle dares Gov Lawal

by Folarin Kehinde September 24, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Minister of State for Defence Bello Matawalle, on Tuesday challenged the Zamfara State Governor, Dauda Lawal to swear an oath with the Quran that he has no hands in banditry affecting the state.

Matawalle gave the charge while rejecting the governor’s claim which linked him to banditry in the state.

Speaking on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily, the minister recalled how he swore using the Quran that he had no connection with banditry in the state.

Lawal had charged the minister to address the allegations of him sponsoring banditry and money laundering during his tenure as governor.

Reacting, Matawalle said: “Let me remind you when I was a governor, I was the only governor that swore by the Holy Quran that I have no hand or connections with banditry or I am not happy with what is happening. I swore that if I was happy or part of it, God should not give me one second.

“I challenged all the politicians that time including Dauda, but none of them could take the oath. But I took it because I know my mind, I know I have a clean heart. And not only that, including all my councillors, chairmen, and commissioners, I will not give you an appointment, you have to take the oath.

“And up till tomorrow, I am challenging these people to take the oath that I have taken.

“They are part of the banditry, if not, let them take the oath with the holy Quran openly with all the Imams in Zamfara State. And since that time none of them have taken this oath.”
