UK to ban sale of energy drinks to children

by Folarin Kehinde September 4, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The United Kingdom government has unveiled plans to prohibit the sale of high-caffeine energy drinks, including popular brands such as Red Bull, to anyone under the age of 16 in England.

Health Secretary, Wes Streeting, announcing the move on Wednesday, said the step was aimed at safeguarding young people’s wellbeing.

“By stopping children from buying these drinks, we’re laying the groundwork for healthier and happier generations,” he explained.

Government figures suggest that up to one in three teenagers aged 13 to 16 regularly consume energy drinks, many of which contain more caffeine than two cups of coffee.

While most major supermarkets already enforce a voluntary restriction, the new policy would make it a nationwide rule.

“How can we expect pupils to thrive in the classroom if they’re running on the equivalent of a double espresso every day?” Streeting asked, stressing that the government was responding to concerns raised by parents and teachers. “We’re determined to address the root causes of poor health and educational struggles head-on.”

The proposal will undergo a 12-week consultation process, seeking input from health experts, retailers, manufacturers, and the wider public.

At present, drinks containing more than 150mg of caffeine per litre are legally required to display a warning that they are not suitable for children.

But Streeting insisted this was not enough, pointing to the broader risks, “Energy drinks may look harmless, but they disrupt sleep, harm concentration, and affect children’s wellbeing. On top of that, the high-sugar varieties damage teeth and fuel obesity.”

UK Bans People With Criminal Records From Football, Travel, Others In New Policy

by Folarin Kehinde August 25, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The United Kingdom on Sunday said criminals would be barred from pubs, concerts, and sports matches under new sentencing powers as part of its Plan for Change.

It said that judges would be able to curtail offenders’ freedoms with driving limits, travel bans, and restriction zones confining them into specific areas.

The changes are expected to toughen up community punishments to deter reoffending and force offenders back on the straight and narrow.

It said that as part of the government’s work to do everything in its power to keep Britain safe, offenders coming out of prison and supervised by the Probation Service would also face similar restrictions and an expanded mandatory drug testing regime.

“In the future, criminals without known drug habits will face this scrutiny, not just those with a history of substance misuse. Offenders who break the rules face being brought back to court or hauled back to prison as punishment, depending on the sentence they are serving,” the government stated on its website on Sunday.

Lord Chancellor and Justice Secretary, Shabana Mahmood, said widening the range of punishments available to judges was part of the government’s Plan for Change to cut crime and make streets safer.

“When criminals break society’s rules, they must be punished. Those serving their sentences in the community must have their freedom restricted there, too.

“These new punishments should remind all offenders that, under this Government, crime does not pay. Rightly, the public expects the government to do everything in its power to keep Britain safe, and that’s what we’re doing,” Mahmood was quoted as saying.

According to the government, judges are currently able to give out limited bans for specific crimes, for example, football bans for crimes committed inside a stadium on match day, to prevent further antisocial behaviour.

It, however, said it would change the law shortly so that such bans can be handed down as a form of punishment for any offence in any circumstance.

“It will form part of wider reforms to sentencing to ensure punishments cut crime and prisons never again run out of places for dangerous offenders. Over 2,400 prison places have opened since July 2024, with the government investing £7 billion to create a total of 14,000 as the prison population increases.

“Investment in the Probation Service will also receive a huge boost with an increase of up to £700 million by 2028/29, up from the annual budget of around £1.6 billion today. This week, it was revealed that the number of Probation Officers has increased by seven per cent in the last 12 months, with trainee probation officer numbers also seeing a surge of 15 per cent.

“This follows the government’s commitment to recruit a further 1,300 this year, in addition to the 1,000 trainee probation officers recruited last year. New technology, including artificial intelligence, will lighten the administrative burden and free up time for probation staff to increase supervision of the most dangerous offenders and keep the public safe,” the government disclosed on its website.

First womb transplant which last 9 hours carried out in UK

by Folarin Kehinde August 23, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The first womb transplant has been carried out by surgeons on a woman in the United Kingdom.

The woman’s sister was the living womb donor.

According to The Guardian on Wednesday, the unidentified 34-year-old married recipient from England underwent a nine-hour transplant procedure.

The married woman was born with a rare condition, meaning her original womb was underdeveloped.

She received a donor womb from her 40-year-old sister, who already had two children of her own.

The recipient was born with Mayer-Rokitansky-Kuster-Hauser syndrome, which is a rare ¬congenital reproductive disorder that affects one in 5,000 women. Sufferers of this syndrome have an underdeveloped vagina and/or missing womb.

The co-lead surgeon Isabel Quiroga, a consultant surgeon at the Oxford Transplant Centre, part of Oxford University hospitals, said she was “thrilled” and “extremely proud” the surgery had been a success.

The recipient, who lives in England and asked not to be named, received her sister’s uterus in an operation in February at Churchill Hospital in Oxford. It took nine hours and 20 minutes and she was well enough to leave the hospital after 10 days.

Academic Corruption: Schools Teach Kids As Young As 9 To ‘Masturbate’ For Homework, Have Anal Sex –Report

by Leading Reporters June 19, 2023
written by Leading Reporters

A report by Daily Mail said many teachers are ‘indoctrinating’ children with scientifically false claims about biological sex, presenting gender as fluid and furthering a narrative that people can be born in the wrong body.

In UK schools, children are being taught about anal sex and orgasms before they have reached puberty and set ‘masturbation’ as homework, as revealed by secretive lesson plans.

A report by Daily Mail said many teachers are ‘indoctrinating’ children with scientifically false claims about biological sex, presenting gender as fluid and furthering a narrative that people can be born in the wrong body.

This comes as the National Health Service is facing a mass legal action from 1,000 families who claim their children were rushed into taking life-changing puberty blockers’ by the Tavistock Centre.

MailOnline said it found graphic teaching material — including a sex manual for pre-teens — being taught to children in classes around the UK.

This comes after a concerned mother was denied the right to see the content of the lessons being taught to her 15-year-old daughter in her Relationships and Sex Education (RSE) classes, which became compulsory three years ago.

Despite a judge refusing Clare Page the right to see the material, MailOnline can reveal that a wealth of questionable teaching resources is already available online.

Colouring books, word searches and cartoon drawings have also been given to young girls and boys by ‘activist teachers’ in their ‘overarching mission to sexualise children in the name of inclusion’.

Since September 2020, Relationships Education has been compulsory in primary schools and RSE mandatory in secondary schools. The change left many teaching staff seeking guidance.

The void was filled by charities — some harbouring unconventional views on biological sex and sharing material on their websites that reference underage sex.

MailOnline noted that some children are taught that from birth until the age of one, babies can ‘experience pleasurable sensations’ by touching their genitals.

Other things being taught to children include ways for 12-year-old girls to orgasm while masturbating, including pinching or stroking the clitoris.

According to the report, children are also given ‘masturbation’ homework from a pre-compulsory RSE resource and told that girls as young as 12 can find sexual pleasure from anal, vaginal and oral sex.

The report also noted that young schoolchildren are taught that it’s normal to want to masturbate during and even before they hit puberty and told that it’s normal for prepubescent children to be sexually attracted to anyone.

They are also told that gender is different from sex but is a much more intrinsic part of who a person is and taught that people can change their sex from being a man to being a woman.

They are taught that some ‘non-binary’ humans are neither men nor women and that men with the male Y chromosome can actually be women, which goes against the teachings in biology.

An ‘award-winning’ teaching pack for children as young as nine who have learning disabilities created before RSE was made mandatory was similarly graphic. One of the lesson plans suggested teachers ‘show the group pictures of male and female masturbation’ and ‘simulate anatomically correct dolls masturbating’

In the lesson plan for children as young as nine, the images are not blurred and show a boy and a girl masturbating. The boy is shown as he is in the middle of ejaculating while the naked girl is seen touching herself while closing her eyes and opening her mouth.

A colouring book aimed at children as young as five invited users to colour in Zoë, who is ‘non-binary’, which according to the book means ‘they are neither a boy or a girl’.

A colouring book aimed at children as young as five invited users to colour in Zoë, who is ‘non-binary’, which according to the book means ‘they are neither a boy or a girl’.

Another lesson resource, a book called Great Relationships and Sex Education that is ‘extremely popular with RSE educators’, points children aged 11 to 13 to a ‘hands on guide’ to masturbation that suggests it can be ‘highly pleasurable’ to touch your anus, genitals and nipples

The Sex Education Forum (SEF), Coram Life Education and Brook are some of the leading charities that create lesson plans for schools, hold PSHE workshops and point teachers towards related educational material.

Coram Life Education supports 50,000 teachers. Their PSHE education reaches more than 600,000 pupils each year.

Meanwhile, SEF states on its own website that it ‘has a long history of successfully influencing policy’.

Some teachers and educators believe RSE and Relationships Education are necessary subjects for children to learn.

Danielle Baron was a teacher and assistant head for 10 years and has run her own education and coaching company for eight years.

She said: ‘It is of utmost importance to educate children about navigating relationships, as they are particularly vulnerable, and education and knowledge empowers them to recognise warning signs.

‘By providing children with this education and support, we can help them navigate relationships safely and empower them to protect themselves against potential abuse.’

A trainee teacher at a multi-academy trust in southeast London who teaches RSE three times a week in 20 minute session said it was ‘vital’ for it to be compulsory for children to learn about sex and relationships.

He said: ‘Schools have a role outside of family and religious groups to teach it, informed by science. The kids need to know it.

‘Teaching about gender is important.

‘Many schools think [RSE is] secondary. Teachers want resources given to them. The issue is that the resources are not good enough.

‘Maybe we need a firm curriculum. If it’s left up to private groups then potentially different schools give different RSE.’

Yet others disagree. Ray Freeman is the director of the National Council of Integrative Psychotherapists.

He told MailOnline: ‘We need to let children be children. What I fear is more of a political movement, where we have classes of girls saying they are a different sex.

‘Sex is biological. Gender is socially constructed. The aggressive movement is mixing the two.

‘It’s dangerous. Has the world gone mad?

‘I think it is psychologically damaging and it can be physically damaging for a young person to be told they are or can be the opposite sex.

‘We have a duty to protect our children. How can we if you don’t know what they are being taught?’

The Family Education Trust’s Lucy Marsh told MailOnline ‘activist teachers’ were on a path to rip children from their families.

She said: ‘It’s an overarching mission to sexualise children in the name of inclusion.

‘If you normalise underage sex to children, it’s grooming and exposing them to sexual abuse.

‘It’s a mission to sexualise children and people don’t understand there’s a huge safeguarding risk in that. It is child indoctrination.

‘When you think of cults, the first thing they do is separate people from families.

‘They are trying to put a distance between children and their families.’

Mrs Marsh has had personal experience of her child being taught shocking sexual material.

She said: ‘My daughter came home and asked if she was asexual. I said, ”Well I hope you are, because you’re 11!”

‘Children come home and become very upset about it.

‘We need a full public inquiry into the Department of Education. A lot of these providers are sanctioning underage sex.

‘We would like [the government] to press pause on RSE lessons until this investigation is over.’

Vagina Matters is the top free teaching resource on sexual health charity Brook’s website. The book which is aimed at 12 to 14-year-olds girls covers sex, masturbation and orgasms and includes cartoons of a woman’s naked breasts, buttocks and vagina.

The guide, for 12 to 14-year-old girls, says: ‘You can be sexually attracted to anyone.’ It also listed ways to find ‘sexual pleasure’ that included ‘anal sex’ and ‘oral sex’.

Under an ‘advice’ heading it added: ‘You can use your fingers to play with your clitoris – stroke it, massage it, rub it, pinch or squeeze it lightly’.

Meanwhile, political activist Laurence Fox told MailOnline: ‘Disgusting ideologues are trying to put children down an irreversible path of manipulation.

‘The fact they want to hide what they are doing is disgusting. It should alarm every parent.

‘This is entirely anti-scientific dribble. It’s total warfare on the family in the name of inclusion and kindness.’

Nigeria on Red List, As UK Halts Recruitment for Doctors, Nurses

by Folarin Kehinde April 10, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The United Kingdom has placed Nigeria on the red list of countries that should not be actively targeted for recruitment by health and social care employers.

This is coming one month after the World Health Organisation listed 55 countries, including Nigeria facing the most pressing health workforce challenges related to Universal Health Coverage.

The United Kingdom Government said Nigeria and other countries on the red list should not be actively targeted for recruitment by health and social care employers unless there was a government-to-government agreement.

According to the information obtained from the website of the UK government titled ‘Code of Practice for the international recruitment of Health and social care personnel in England,’ it said country identification follows the methodology contained in the 10-year review of relevance and effectiveness of the WHO global code of practice on the International Recruitment of Health Personnel.

“Consistent with the WHO Global Code of Practice principles and articles, and as explicitly called for by the WHO Global Code of Practice 10-year review, the listed countries should be prioritised for health personnel development and health system-related support, provided with safeguards that discourage active international recruitment of health personnel.

“Countries on the list should not be actively targeted for recruitment by health and social care employers, recruitment organisations, agencies, collaborations, or contracting bodies unless there is a government-to-government agreement in place to allow managed recruitment undertaken strictly in compliance with the terms of that agreement.

“Countries on the WHO Health Workforce Support and Safeguards list are graded red in the code. If a government-to-government agreement is put in place between a partner country, which restricts recruiting organisations to the terms of the agreement, the country is added to the amber list.”

It said if a country was not on the red or amber list, then it is green.

The amber countries where international recruitment is only permitted in compliance with the terms of the government-to-government agreement are Kenya and Nepal.

It added that active recruitment is permitted from green-graded countries where there is a government-to-government agreement with the UK in place for international health and care workforce recruitment.

“Green-graded countries without a government-to-government agreement with the UK are not published in the code of practice for England.

“The government-to-government agreement may set parameters, implemented by the country of origin, for how UK employers, contracting bodies, recruitment organisations, agencies, and collaborations recruit. These organisations are encouraged to recruit on the terms of the government-to-government agreement.

“The green country list will be updated as new government-to-government agreements are signed with the UK.

It is recommended employers, contracting bodies, recruitment organisations, agencies, and collaborations regularly check the list for updates prior to embarking on any recruitment campaign.

Why IELTS Should Be Scrapped for Nigerians, Other Anglophone Nationals

by Leading Reporters April 8, 2022
written by Leading Reporters

The past weeks have witnessed an intensified effort to stop foreign universities from requesting International English Language Testing System (IELTS) from Nigerians. A petition by a public policy organisation, Policy Shapers, has gathered over 75,000 signatures. Those reacting to the petition are asking the UK Home Office, which is believed to be primarily in charge of the test, to either reform it or stop it for Nigerians and other anglophone countries.

Nigerians seeking to study in foreign countries often find themselves in need of an IELTS test. For instance, in the United Kingdom, where most universities require IELTS, apart from their travel cost, the test application fee is another burden many international students bear when processing UK student visas. Some employment-based travels also require the test.

Some of the concerns raised include the cost of the test, which is almost three times the minimum wage in a country like Nigeria, and the validity of the exam result, which only lasts for two years. Many also question the need for a country like Nigeria, where English is lingua Franca and used as the language of instruction from primary to university level.

The average cost of IELTS test ranges from 83,000 Naira (200.5 USD) and 89,500 ($216.2 USD) in Nigeria. This is almost three times the national minimum wage which is 30,000 Naira monthly. There are 11 IELTS test centres across Nigeria run by the British Council, a 2020 ICIR report shows. Up to five test dates are scheduled monthly, with an average of 120 people writing the test at a centre on each day.

Given the frequency of the test dates and an average number of candidates, at least 5.15 billion Naira must have been paid by Nigerians to the Council in 2020. Furthermore, the test can only be taken in 12 centres in the country, requiring many candidates to travel a long distance to participate. The transport fare is extra financial burden applicants bear.

Nigerians aren’t the only ones paying a high cost for IELTS; other Anglophone countries face the same challenge. In Uganda, where the test application fee is the highest in Africa, each applicant pays $317 to take the test. This is over 1,000% of the country’s minimum wage of $1.70. Zimbabwe, Malawi, Kenya, and Namibia are some of the African countries that pay higher for IELTS than their minimum wage.

The shelf life of the test result is another concern. IELTS result becomes invalid after two years. This means those who do not use it within the timeframe will have to re-register the exam paying the high amount again if they don’t relocate within the given timeframe. The #ReformIELTS campaign on Twitter trended with people comparing the English proficiency test with its French Test (TOEFL), which cost much lower and last for life. The convener of the campaign, Ebenezar Wikinar, lamented the motive behind the short validity, stating “there’s no way that my English knowledge would expire.”

While some want the test to be reformed, others are questioning its necessity for Nigerians and other Anglophone nationals who communicate in English in their everyday lives. While Nigerians and nationals of other British colonies in Africa are required to take the IELTS, citizens of Bahamas, Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda, Jamaica, St. Kitts, and Nevis Dominica, Trinidad, and Tobago, and 10 other nations are exempted from taking the test. This further questions the organiser’s criteria for eligibility for an exemption.

In October, Policy Shapers wrote the Home Office for explanations on why none of the Anglophone countries was listed as its Majority English Speaking Countries. Three months after, the UK replied saying, “to be included on the Majority English Speaking Country (MESC) list, we must have evidence that most people in the country (more than half) speak English as a first language.”

However, most Nigerians are not satisfied with the answer, with many questioning the type of evidence needed by the UK to know that Nigerians deserve a spot on the list of countries exempted from the test.

There is enough evidence showing the proficiency of Nigerians in English. For years, the country has been ranking high on the EF English Proficiency Index, currently standing 29th out of 112 countries ranked globally and 3rd in Africa. In addition, out of more than 140 countries that sat for IELTS in 2018, Nigerians reportedly had the sixth-best performance.

President Buhari state among northern states declared highly unsafe by Britain

by Leading Reporters April 4, 2022
written by Leading Reporters

Katsina State, the home state of Nigeria’s President Muhammadu Buhari is among the northern states in Nigeria the United Kingdom has warned its citizens to extensively avoid, describing it as highly unsafe

Other states include Yobe, Borno, Adamawa, Zamfara, Gombe and Kaduna state where suspected terrorists bombed an Abuja- Kaduna moving passenger train on Monday.

The terror attack left in its wake over 20 persons dead, several wounded and many kidnapped by the criminals who planted explosives on the rail track and later shot at stranded passengers.
Few days before the train bombing, suspected bandits had also attacked an international airport in Kaduna.

President Muhammadu Buhari has since ordered security agencies to hunt down the terrorists.

In spite of this, the UK government said in a travel advisory on Thursday that the designated states are not safe because of the rising level of insecurity.

The directory issued by the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office FCDO, warned that the states any high risk areas where criminal group are still kidnapping people and killing others.

Part of the directory reads in parts: “The FCDO advise against all travel to Borno State, Yobe State, Adamawa State, Gombe State, Kaduna State, Katsina State, and Zamfara State. Violent attacks are frequent and there is a high threat of kidnap,” the post read.

“On 26 March 2022, gunmen launched an attack against Kaduna airport, killing at least one airport official in the latest in a series of attacks by gunmen in the north of Nigeria. On the evening of 29 March 2022, an apparent Improvised Explosive Device attack took place against a train travelling from Abuja to Kaduna. Reports suggest that a number of people were killed and that others were abducted by gunmen. Train services are now suspended between Abuja and Kaduna.”

“The threat level in North-East Nigeria, including around Maiduguri is increasing, particularly around transport hubs, religious areas, and large gatherings. Kidnaps have taken place on the roads in and out of Maiduguri. As the dry season starts in October, this risk is expected to increase even further,” the advisory further said.

“If the security situation in Maiduguri were to deteriorate any further, there is a significant likelihood that it could be extremely difficult for you to leave the city. We do not advise travelling by road.”

“If you’re in the North East against FCDO advice, keep in touch with the authorities and the wider community on the security situation and make sure your procedures and contingency plans are up to date. If you are working in the North East of Nigeria you should be fully confident in your employer’s ability to extract you from the North East in the event of any emergency,” FCDO said
