Tinubu orders return of history as primary, secondary school subject

by Folarin Kehinde January 1, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Minister of Education Tunji Alausa says President Bola Tinubu has mandated the return of Nigerian History as a subject in basic education.

Alausa said this on Tuesday when he was featured as a guest on Channels Television’s End-of-Year Specia Review show.

“President Tinubu has given the directive for the return of history as a subject in primary and secondary schools from the year 2025,” Alausa said.

History was removed from the Nigerian school curriculum in 2008. The government replaced history with social studies, government, and civic education.

The decision was made due to a number of factors, including: Students avoided the subject, there were few job prospects for history graduates and there was a shortage of history teachers.

Meanwhile, quantitative data from existing studies quantified the repercussions of the removal of history from the Nigerian school curriculum in 2008.

Research after tracing the evolution of history education in Nigeria from colonial times to independence, said this study chronicles the rise (late 1940s) and fall (1970s) of the study of history.

The study categorizes the consequences of this removal into three key areas: nation-building and development, historical scholarship, and national consciousness and identity.

The loss of history had economic, democratic, and ethnic repercussions, impacting tourism, government accountability and transparency. Historical scholarship declined, and alternative subjects (social studies, civic and government) failed to foster national identity.

Despite these challenges, the study offers hope by examining the reintroduction of history into the curriculum by the Historical Society of Nigeria, addressing related challenges, and emphasizing the importance of history in nation-building, scholarship, and identity formation.

by Folarin Kehinde January 1, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has been named THISDAY 2024 Man of the Year, an honour that recognizes his bold leadership and transformative reforms aimed at reshaping Nigeria’s socio-economic landscape.

The newspaper noted that since assuming office, Tinubu has tackled pressing national challenges with decisive policy actions, often making tough, unpopular decisions to address long-standing structural issues.

“His administration’s removal of fuel subsidies, economic reforms, and efforts to tackle security challenges have sparked widespread debate but underscore his determination to redefine governance in Nigeria,” the publication noted.

In his first media interview as president, Tinubu encapsulated his governance philosophy, stating, “You can’t be doing the same thing and expect different outcomes.” This ethos has guided his administration as it navigates the complexities of Nigeria’s political and economic environment.

“Tinubu’s leadership style, marked by resilience and a conviction-driven approach, has earned him praise for his ability to stay focused on long-term national interests despite mounting criticisms and hardships faced by the populace,” the newspaper said.

The THISDAY Man of the Year award celebrates individuals who have made significant contributions to national development.

As the 2024 recipient, Tinubu joins a distinguished list of past winners.

Bola Tinubu rank 3rd most corrupt President Globally

by Folarin Kehinde December 31, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Tinubu has been ranked among the world’s most corrupt leaders.

This is according to a ranking released by the Organized Crime and Corruption Reporting Project (OCCRP).

The award comes after a global poll that sought to spotlight individuals notorious for promoting corruption and criminal activities.

According to the OCCRP, Tinubu came third in the poll, following Kenyan President William Ruto and former Indonesian President Joko Widodo. However, the overall “Person of the Year” title was awarded to Bashar al-Assad, the recently ousted leader of Syria.

Tinubu’s alleged role in entrenching a regime of corruption in Nigeria earned him this dubious distinction. His eight-year tenure as governor of Lagos, from 1999 to 2007, was marred by allegations of corruption and amassing wealth for himself and his family.

The recent controversy surrounding the award of a multitrillion-naira road project to a company run by his son has only added to the reputation that handed the Nigerian leader the award.

Tinubu’s alleged history as a cocaine dealer in Chicago and allegations of certificate forgery have also been cited as reasons for his inclusion in the OCCRP ranking.

Switch Off Your Light To Manage Electricity Bill, Tinubu Advises Nigerians

by Folarin Kehinde December 24, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Tinubu has advised Nigerians to step up their management skill in reducing electricity bills.

“It’s not negative to learn to manage. You learn to control your electricity bill, switch off the light, let’s learn to manage,” Tinubu said on Monday in a chat with reporters at his Bourdillon residence in the highbrow Ikoyi area of Lagos State.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) chieftain also said he does not believe in price control and he won’t go that path. “I don’t believe in price control, we will work hard to supply the market,” he said.

After his inauguration in May 2023, Tinubu, former Lagos governor, energy costs skyrocketed, especially with the removal of petrol subsidy and electricity tariff hikes. Petrol prices more than quadrupled, soaring from less than N200 per litre to over N1,100 in many parts of the country. The naira also took a nosedive, wobbling from around N700/$ to N1,600.

On April 3, 2024, the electricity regulator raised the tariff for customers said to be under the Band A classification, with customers now paying N225 kilowatt per hour from N66, a development that has been heavily criticised by many Nigerians, considering the immediacy of the tariff hike and the current hardship in the land.

Food and commodity inflation have skyrocketed as Nigerians battle what can pass for the worst cost of living crisis since the country’s independence over six decades ago but Tinubu has insisted that his reforms are necessary to set the country on the path of prosperity.

President Tinubu wins 2024 Man of the Year award

by Folarin Kehinde December 22, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Ahmed Adekunle Tinubu has been named as The Will newspaper’s choice for 2024 Man of the Year.

The newspaper stated that the decision to honour President Tinubu was unanimous among its editorial team.

According to them, the president’s reform policies over the past year have profoundly impacted Nigerians in ways unseen in recent history.

The newspaper wrote in its editorial: “President Tinubu’s reform policies in the past one year have significantly impacted every Nigerian negatively, old or young in business, employed or unemployed as never before in the country’s recent history.

“Government’s removal of subsidy and floating of the local currency, the Naira delivered a big blow to the already fragile economy as the resultant increase in fuel prices drove logistics and the prices of food items through the roof.

“Nigeria’s annual inflation rate jumped to 34.60 percent in November, from 33.88 percent recorded in October, the National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) said in its latest Consumer Price Index (CPI) report last Monday.

“According to the Bureau, on a year-on-year basis, the headline inflation rate was 6.40 percentage points higher than the 28.20 percent rate recorded in November 2023.

“This shows that the year-on-year headline inflation rate increased in November 2024, compared to the same month in the preceding year of November 2023.

For the yearly average Consumer Price Index, CPI, the result shows an increase. It said the percentage change in the average CPI for the twelve months ending November 2024 over the average for the previous twelve-month period was 32.77 percent, showing 8.76 per cent points increase, compared to 24.01 per cent recorded in November 2023. The yearly Urban/ Rural inflation rate is also high.

“In November 2024, the urban inflation rate was 35.07 percent, indicating 9.62 percentage points higher compared to the 25.45 percent recorded in November 2023. Rural inflation rate average in November 2024 was 30.71 percent on a year-on-year basis. This was 8.00 percentage points higher, compared to the 22.71 percent recorded in November 2023.

According to the Bureau, the rise in food inflation on a year-on-year basis was caused by increases in prices of Yam, Water Yam, Coco Yam, etc (Potatoes, Yam & Other Tubers Class), Guinea Corn, Maize Grains, Rice, etc (Bread and Cereals Class), Beer, Pinto (Tobacco Class), and Palm Oil, Vegetable Oil, etc (Oil and Fats Class).

“On a month-on-month basis, the Food inflation rate in November 2024 was 2.98 percent, which shows a 0.05 percentage point increase compared to the 2.94 percent recorded in October 2024.

For the past one year, therefore, Nigerians across all social strata, business and professional calling, have felt the pain and hardship of the ongoing reforms.

“Little wonder, many of them took to social media to deploy the moniker T-Pain (Tinubu Pain) in describing the harsh realities of government’s reform policies, though his media handlers rechristened it Temporary Pain while National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, says it should actually be T-Gain (Tinubu Gains).”

by Folarin Kehinde December 16, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Tinubu has approved free train rides nationwide from December 20, 2024, to January 5, 2025.

This is part of measures to ease transportation costs during the Christmas and New Year celebrations, the Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, told State House correspondents in Abuja.

Idris explained, “As we did last year, there will be free train service to all Nigerians from December 20 up until January 5, free train service nationwide.

“This is consistent with the President’s desire to cushion the effect of transportation, especially to the most vulnerable Nigerians.

“Recall that this also happened in the last Christmas period and the Sallah period. And the President has also approved that this year.”

JUST IN: Ohanaeze Ndigbo supports Tinubu’s tax reforms bill

by Folarin Kehinde December 2, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Ohanaeze Ndigbo, the apex socio-cultural organization representing the Igbo people, has expressed its unequivocal endorsement of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s proposed Tax reform bills.

The group lauded the reforms for their potential to revolutionize Nigeria’s economic framework, particularly benefiting Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) and workers, while addressing the long-standing issue of double taxation.

In a statement on Sunday, December 1, 2024, signed by its Secretary General, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, Ohanaeze described the reforms as a vital step toward equitable economic growth.

“These tax reforms represent a transformative opportunity for the rejuvenation of SMEs and the enhancement of Nigerian workers’ fortunes.

“By eliminating the scourge of double taxation imposed by unscrupulous state governors, these reforms will create an equitable business climate that significantly boosts both local and foreign investments,” the group stated.

The group stated that the Igbo community, known for its entrepreneurial spirit, stands to benefit immensely from the proposed measures, which are expected to bolster private sector growth and foster a fairer regulatory environment.

Ohanaeze urged Southern Federal lawmakers to put aside partisan differences and ensure the smooth passage of the reforms in the National Assembly.

“It is imperative that our Southern legislators close ranks, transcending partisan divides, to ensure that the Tax Reforms Bills navigate both chambers of the National Assembly successfully,” the statement emphasized.

The organization expressed disappointment at opposition to the reforms from some Northern governors and lawmakers, attributing it to an attempt to maintain the status quo in VAT derivation principles, which they argue favours select interests.

“If the Northern political elites succeed in thwarting President Tinubu’s initiatives, it could set a dangerous precedent, fostering resistance against meaningful reform,” Ohanaeze warned.

Ohanaeze reiterated its solidarity with the Tinubu administration, citing its previous decision to abstain from nationwide protests as a gesture of cooperation.

“The promise of a prosperous and just Nigeria is within our reach, but it demands our collective resolve to advocate for transparency, equity, and sustainable economic growth,” the group concluded.
