“Teachers are nation-builders, Why subject them to manual labour?” Group queries Edo Government

by Folarin Kehinde September 1, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

A rights group, Edo State Civil Society Coalition on Human Rights, has condemned the State Ministry of Education for allegedly compelling teachers in the public schools to cut grasses and engage in menial labour.

LEADING REPORTERS reports condemned the development in a statement made available to newsmen on Monday, September 1, 2025 in Benin City.

The statement was signed by Marxist Kola Edokpayi and Comrade Aghatise Raphael, Coordinator General and Secretary General of the group, respectively.

The group noted that the teachers were not employed as gardeners, cleaners and janitors.

Stressing that teachers must never be forced into degrading labour, the group threatened to embark on protests and take legal action if the state government fails to stop the development.

The group insisted that the action of the government is not only an insult to the teaching profession, but also a blatant violation of human rights and labour ethics.

The group suggested that the government should employ support staff, gardeners, cleaners and janitors that must be paid adequately to handle school maintenance.

“The Edo State Civil Society Coalition For Human Rights is outraged by the disgraceful and demeaning practice of compelling teachers in Edo public schools to cut grass and perform menial labour at the directive of the Ministry of Education.

“This is not only an insult to the teaching profession but also a blatant violation of human rights and labour ethics.

“Teachers are the backbone of society and nation-builders entrusted with shaping the minds of our children. Reducing them to gardeners and cleaners is a shameful act of abuse and a slap in the face of every hardworking educator in Edo State.

“We state clearly that teachers are not slaves, and schools are not forced labour camps. This backward practice belongs to the dark past and must never be tolerated in a state that claims to value education.

“Any nation that treats its teachers with contempt is preparing its own burial ground. Forcing teachers into menial labour is not education reform, it is educational slavery.

BREAKING: 3,963 teachers have failed qualifying exam — TRCN

by Folarin Kehinde December 18, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

More than 3,900 teachers across Nigeria failed the November 2023 Professional Qualifying Examination, a mandatory test for professional teachers in the country.

The Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), which administers the exam, made the disclosure on Monday. The body revealed that only 72.9% of the 15,753 candidates who sat for the test in 38 centres nationwide passed. This translates to 3,963 teachers failing the assessment.

“A total of 15,753 sat the examination in 38 Centres across the country, out of this, we have 10,636 that passed, which is about 72.9 per cent, and those that failed are 3,963,” stated TRCN Registrar, Prof. Josiah Ajiboye, during an interactive session with journalists.

Prof. Ajiboye further explained that additional candidates were absent from the exam, while others had their results cancelled due to irregularities and suspected malpractices. The November diet ran from November 23rd to 25th, 2023.

NUT Laments Reducing Number of Teachers in Nigeria

by Folarin Kehinde August 16, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigeria Union of Teachers has decried the dwindling number of teachers in the nation.

The National President of the union, Comrade Audu Amba, made a call on all tiers of government to employ more teachers in primary and secondary schools in order to fill up the gap created by retiring teachers.

Comrade Audu made the call on Monday in Calabar when he came to commission the NUT Multi-Purpose Cooperative Society Transport Scheme at the NUT state secretariat.

He commended NUT Cross River State branch for acquiring three brand new Toyota Hiace buses for members.

Amba said, “Trade union is not all about asking what the government will do for you but it’s for adding value to yourself as a union.

“We are proud as Nigerian teachers to identify with the leadership of this country. As far as we are concerned as primary and secondary school teachers, we’ve gotten what we want from the President of this country, and those things are not only incremented in service year of teachers but there are so many other goodies like the increase in the years of retirement for teachers from 60 to 65 years, and from 35 years to 40 years for service, issue of special salary, special allowances, all sorts of loans, scholarships that is enshrined in those very approvals that the Buhari has graciously given to Nigerian teachers.

“So, we are most grateful to him. He has done his part; we are now waiting for the gazette to be out so that it will now become a working document for all the tiers of government.

“I want to use this medium to commend some state governments who have kick-started the implementation of this new year of service for Nigerian teachers, and we are urging other governors who are yet to implement it to do so. They should not even wait till the gazette is out, let them follow and do the needful because the President has appended his signature to all that we’re talking about.”

He added that many state governments were not recruiting adequate teachers to match the number of those retiring.

“When teachers are retiring and there is no commensurate recruitment or replacement then the school system will be left without teachers in our schools.

“If you take a look at the statistics, you’ll see that many schools have not recruited teachers for the past 20 years. That’s the situation we have found ourselves in.”

In his remarks, the state Chairman of NUT, Gregory Olayi, thanked Amba for honouring the invitation to commission the new buses and thanked the members for trusting him to execute the project.

He decried the poor treatment of teachers in the state and called on the state government to treat teachers better.

“The state of teachers in Cross River State is regrettable. The way we are treated in Cross River State is as if we were not supposed to exist. We are employed, we are rendering our services, and we are not even paid. If we are paid it is once every two months.

“Aside from that, salaries are being paid to teachers but the dues deducted from the salaries are not paid to the union. Teachers are being promoted for 15 years without implementation. The increment was done in January, February and March this year. This same money was deducted back. I want to use this medium to plead with the government in power to see how they can turn a new leaf in the direction of teachers,” he said.
