“Thunder”, lightning kill Covenant University student on campus

by Folarin Kehinde June 14, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

An engineering student at Covenant University, CU, Ota, Ogun State, Mordi Nwense Daniel, has died while playing football with some of his colleagues.

Mordi died on Saturday after being reportedly struck by lightning, as he was playing football with some colleagues on the university’s playing pitch.

However, his death has elicited condemnations in some quarters because of the alleged delay in giving him medical attention immediately the incident happened.

According to some witnesses, instead of taking him straight for medical attention, staff of the university, whose attention was drawn to the incident, started praying for him before taking him to the medical centre, which was a bit late.

A report by Saturday Vanguard quoted a parent, who craved anonymity, to have said: “Imagine pastors praying for supposed thunder-struck student instead of taking him to the clinic or hospital the moment his mates called for help. My second child was there and I know what I went through in resisting their pretence/ insults for four years.”

The development has also attracted huge comments on social media, with many condemning and accusing the university of always trying to cover up such issues.

On Instagram for instance, Campusgiant posted thus, “ Covenant University is mourning the loss of a student, Mordi, who tragically died after being struck by lightning while playing football in the rain on June 7.

Social media posts by witnesses claim a delayed and inadequate emergency response with concerns over the availability of essential medical equipment on campus.

The incident has triggered widespread calls for improved student healthcare and better preparations for emergencies. Mordi is being remembered as a vibrant young man, whose life was cut short too soon. The community continues to grieve while demanding accountability and change.”

Similarly, some commentators on X formerly Twitter, decried attempts cover up the incident.

David @afrogodd wrote “Covenant University always covers up the death of students and in many cases, they are complicit in the cause of death.”

Vicki @ceotbk also wrote “ A student (now dead) just got struck down by lightning and the school is trying to cover it up because of their medical negligence.”

Video: FG Ignored us, we paid N180 million to Kidnappers – Parent

  • About 730 children and students have been kidnapped Since December 2020, a UNICEF tally showed. At least six states shut down schools temporarily.
  • “Millions of children are paying the price of the government’s failure to protect its citizens from violence,”

Angry parent of kidnapped Greenfield University students said N180 million Naira was paid to the abductors of the university students kidnapped over a month ago.

A total of 10 motorcycles were also given to the kidnappers as part of the ransom to secure the release of the students abducted from their school on April 20.

14 students were freed on Saturday.

“N180 million, that is what they [the kidnappers] collected from us,” a parent told Television Continental on Saturday, noting the ransom was paid “without the help of the government.”

One of the students was released in early May after his parent paid a ransom.

Five of the Greenfield students were executed by the kidnappers and government and security forces remain helpless.

But the Kaduna State Government insisted paying ransom only emboldens the criminals.

“We will not give them any money and they will not make any profit from Kaduna,” Kaduna Governor Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai said last month.

About 730 children and students have been kidnapped Since December 2020, a UNICEF tally showed. At least six states shut down schools temporarily.

States such as Katsina, Zamfara, Niger and Kaduna have seen mass kidnapping of students.

Amnesty International said in a report in April that “over 600 schools” have been shut in Nigeria’s northern region as kidnapping spirals.

AI worried that the spate of kidnapping will worsen the rate of out-of-school children in the region and fuel a spike in child marriages and early pregnancies.

“Millions of children are paying the price of the government’s failure to protect its citizens from violence,” said Osai Ojigho, the director of Amnesty International Nigeria.

“The Nigerian authorities must restore security to schools in Nigeria and provide psycho-social support to victims of abductions and their families, to enable them to heal from trauma and integrate back into society. There must be a plan to ensure that children can return to safe classrooms.”

In a statement after the release, Kaduna State Government said it is “working with the FG and other states for military operations to secure our people” despite the accusation of abandonment by the Greenfield students’ parents.
