by Folarin Kehinde June 3, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Some members of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) enforcing the strike declared by the union are currently receiving treatment at the Plateau State Specialist Hospital.

Leading reporters reports that the organised Labour had declared indefinite strike over the Federal Government to meets its N494,000 Minimum Wage demand.

While enforcing the strike in Jos, Plateau state capital, on Monday, touts at a private transport company reportedly attacked some NLC members

Trouble started after the louts at the company which operates at a motor park located at Yakubu Gowon Way, opposite NTA Jos, threw stones at the enforcement team.

According to the Vice Chairman of NLC in Plateau, Comrade Sunday Ayodele, “Immediately the touts at the park saw us arriving the gate, they started hauling stone at us, thinking we are members of the NURTW.

“Unknown to us, there is a pending dispute between the private transport company and NURTW Jos. And the touts in the park simply descended on our members. Before we could understand the reason for the attack, the touts had injured 4 members of NLC.

“It took the intervention of the security agencies for calm to be restored at the park. We had to withdraw our enforcement team from the park to allow peace to reign.”

Strike: Labour cuts water supply to Senate, House Of Reps

by Folarin Kehinde June 3, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Members of the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN), an affiliate of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), have shut down the National Assembly in compliance with the indefinite strike declared by the organised labour.

Our correspondent who went to the National Assembly to monitor the situation met the entrance and exit gates blocked with two coastal buses by PASAN.

The organised labour had insisted that its indefinite strike would begin today as planned following the federal government’s refusal to increase the minimum wage above N60,000.

Labour, which is demanding N494,000, said this in Abuja last night after a three-hour meeting with the National Assembly leadership and top officials of the Executive arm of government.

Recall that following failure to reach a compromise on a new minimum wage by the tripartite committee set up by the federal government, the organised labour comprising the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) commenced a nationwide strike today.

Daily Trust reports that electricity and water supply to the two buildings housing the Senate and the House of Representatives as well as other facilities in the National Assembly complex have been shut down by the union.

by Folarin Kehinde September 4, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The National Union of Banks, Insurance and Financial Institution Employees has directed a total shutdown of the financial sector for two days starting from Tuesday, September 5.

The directive is in compliance with the warning strike notice issued last week by the Nigerian Labour Congress.

In a notice issued by the NUBIFIE Secretary General, Mohammed Sheikh the Union directed all it’s zonal councils to comply with the directive of the NLC.

It reads, “In line with the communique issued after the meeting of National Executive Council (NEC) of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) held on Thursday 31st August, 2023 that all affiliates should direct all its members to commence two days’ withdrawer of services from Tuesday & Wednesday the 5th & 6th September, 2023.

“The directives is imperative to get the needed attention of government and warn it of its new found love of meddling in the internal affairs of unions rather than address the punishing economic circumstances we find ourselves.

“We hereby direct all our organs to comply with this directive by ensuring all our members stay off duties for the two days.Your corporation in this regard will be appreciated.”

The NLC had last week declared a two-day warning strike over the hardship faces by Nigerians following the fuel subsidy removal.

The fuel subsidy was removed on May 29 during the inauguration of President Bola Tinubu.

The Congress had on August 2 staged a nationwide protest over the subsidy removal.

The Union had also warned that it would embark on a nationwide strike if the Federal Government does not revert to the old fuel price.

This will be the first strike to be embarked upon by the union three months after fuel subsidy was removed.

ASUU Strike: NLC Embarks on Nationwide Protest

by Folarin Kehinde July 26, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has made true of its promise to carry out a nationwide protest the ongoing ASUU strike on the 26th and 27th of July.

Major roads in Lagos, Ibadan, Jos and other Cities across the country has been blocked as both members of NLC, ASUU and NANS engage in their planned protest.

The union had announced last week Sunday that it would on the 26th and 27th of July, carry out a nationwide strike to compel the federal government to resolve the five-month-old Asuu strike that has kept public university students at home.

The government, through Minister of Information Lai Mohammed had deemed the protest illegal, stating that there was no need for the planned protest since the government does not have any dispute with members of the NLC.

However, Nation President of NLC Ayuba Wabba in a statement said there was no going back on the planned protest

Wabba, who was reacting to an earlier warning against the strike by Information and Culture Minister Lai Mohammed said it was in consonance with democratic norms and rule of law.

Mohammed had on Wednesday said the NLC had no reason to embark on the protest as the Federal Government had no dispute with its members. He declared the protest as illegal.

The NLC, in a statement, said:” It’s elementary knowledge that the right to peaceful assembly and protest is a fundamental global right guaranteed by the UN Charter on Human and Peoples right and the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria. All peaceful assemblies are lawful and do not require any permission under our laws. In a democratic society, such a statement is not consistent with the rule of law.

Details coming in from the Lagos chapter of the NLC says that it has given the federal government a two-week ultimatum to resolve the ongoing strike.

Speaking at the protest in Ikeja, Lagos NLC chairperson, Mrs Agnes Sessy urged the federal government to act within the two weeks ultimatum or risk another #ENDSARS type of protest.

Members of the National Union of Electricity Employees have also threatened nationwide blackout as they plan to join the NLC in solidarity protest with ongoing strike by ASUU.

FGN N50b monthly electricity susbsidy not True

by Leading Reporters March 18, 2021
written by Leading Reporters

Organised Labour has tackled the Federal Government over claims of subsidising electricity supply across the country for over N50billion monthly.

The administration of President Goodluck Jonathan privatized the electricity sector in November 2013 and handed it over to 11 distribution companies and six generating companies.

Last month, Minister of Power Sale Mamman, said the Federal Government was paying N50 billion monthly to subsidise electricity across.

But Labour yesterday wondered why the government would pay subsidy for a sector it claimed to have privatized.

Deputy President, Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, asked the government to come out and tell Nigerians the level of money they were giving to the operators of the sector.

Ajaero, who doubles as the General Secretary of the National Union of Electricity Employees (NUEE), asked the government to unmask the real owners of the Distribution and Generating Companies the sector was sold to in 2013.

He spoke at a briefing to unveil the burial arrangements for the late Secretary General of the Medical and Health Workers Union (MHWUN), Dr Silas Adamu.

The MHWUN scribe and his wife and daughter died in a road accident along Abuja-Kaduna.

Ajaero said: “I have never believed that there is subsidy. Let us take the electricity for instance. When it was under NEPA, the tariff was down there; nobody gave NEPA one kobo. And NEPA was running the lowest tariff. It was not subsidised.

“Now you sold it to people and they increased tariff five times and you still tell me you are subsidising it. I think there is something wrong there. And throughout the meeting we told them there is no subsidy.”

“How do you subsidise a commodity that is the private sector? Are they subsiding garri, banana and plantain that are in private houses? Having privatise the sector unless the so called operators are blackmailing them (Fed Govt) and collecting money free from them (government).

“If a product is sold for N10 per kilowatt hour you then privatise and started selling it at N30 per kilowatt hour, with additional N20 and then you say you are subsidising it doesn’t add up. I don’t know where that money is coming from. It is not true.

“They (government) should come out and tell Nigerians the level of money they are giving to the operators. Nigerians should be able to unfold the real owners of the Discos.

“The names we are hearing none of them own the Discos whether the MD or Chairman or both and we need to know. We have said this again and again and people are saying subsidy. Then you say you have subsidised with about N1.3 trillion and you sold it at N400 billion and we don’t ask questions?

“Why will subsidy be more than the price?”

The labour leader also said governance structure in the country has collapsed.

“Why will subsidy be more than the price?”

The labour leader also said governance structure in the country has collapsed.

Ajaero said: “Governance to a very large extent seems to have collapsed because when we talk of there is no electricity it will seem as if the roads are working or the rail system is working or the roads are working.

“The same way there is no electricity there is no water. You can’t even go through the public water system and open the taps. Growing up, I can still draw an inference from the 70s. That is why I said Nigeria is under developing; the country is going down.

“Things are getting bad and the problem we have is that of governance and if we fix governance things will start working again.”

Flash Back: Politicians, Celebrities Keeps mum over Fuel Hike

by Leading Reporters March 14, 2021
written by Leading Reporters

Notable Politicians, Celebrities and Labour Union has kept silent over the increase of fuel by the government from N147 to N212 per litre.

The Country under the leadership of President Muhammadu Buhari is currently groaning under heavy taxes and levies, insecurity, increase in prices of food stuff and a host of others now grapples with another hardship of fuel increase as long queues at filling stations and increase in transportation fare are seen all over the country.

NLC Protest over Fuel Hike in2012

Following this drama, increase in prices of foods stuffs rose to over 100% due to agitation and ultimatum given by the southwest governors to Fulani herdsmen to vacate their state or face the consequences, in retaliation they (Fulani/Herdsmen) too ban the exportation of major food commodities to the southwest and other parts of the country who are in dire need for food.

Citizens Protest Fuel Hike 2012

While Nigerians still battle with this series of quagmire, they were shocked to the bone when on March, 12, 2021, the price of fuel increased from N147 to N212 per litre.

The Petroleum Products Pricing Regulatory Agency, (PPPRA) after few hours of the price increase bowed to pressure by deleting an earlier published template announcing that the new price of petrol has reached N212.6 per litre.

The Federal having seen the reactions of Nigerians like a toothless dog but at the mercy of only the media gave a wishy-washy apology for the increase.

According to the minister of State for Petroleum, Timipre Sylva, he said neither he nor President Muhammadu Buhari was informed, and regrets “distress and inconvenience, the unfortunate information might have caused.”

Photos Of Politicians, Celebrities Insulting Jonathan Over Fuel Price In 2012

It would be recalled that in 2012, notable and respected Nigerians, Politicians, Institutions, Celebrities and even religious leaders lambasted former President, Goodluck Jonathan after he increased fuel price from N65 to N87. At the time, the dollar rate was still manageable and the prices of foodstuff and many other items in the market were still affordable.

The situation now seems callously unbearable as those that took the streets to protest in 2012 and are supposed to lend their voices to this maladministration of a government suddenly kept silent on the fuel increase.

As it seems, average Nigerians are finding life difficult at the moment. They are beginning to regret the choice they made in 2015 and 2019. Although this is the case, they are however handicapped.
