Muslim-Muslim ticket has failed us – Shari’a council

by Folarin Kehinde February 26, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Supreme Council for Shari’ah in Nigeria (SCSN) has expressed disappointment over the Muslim-Muslim ticket that brought President Bola Tinubu and Vice President Kashim Shettima into office in 2023, stating that it has not yielded the expected benefits for the Muslim community.

Speaking at a Pre-Ramadan Lecture, the President of SCSN, Sheikh Abdurrasheed Hadiyyatullah, criticized the administration for failing to address the plight of Nigerian Muslims, despite the general belief that the ticket would be advantageous to them.

“We have seen Nigerians vote for people of the same Islamic faith into the Presidency without turning the country into an unceasing battlefield, but we have not seen justice and equity done to all communities, irrespective of their faith,” Hadiyyatullah stated.

He further lamented that millions of Muslims remain politically marginalized across various parts of the country despite their significant population and constitutional rights. He warned against what he described as an attempt to suppress the rights of South West Muslims to organize mechanisms that would enhance their coexistence with Christians within their communities.

“We stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the South West and we advise those who think they can divide the Nigerian Muslim Umma to find other mischief to engage themselves,” he said.

Hadiyyatullah also raised concerns over the worsening economic hardship in the country, urging the federal government to take immediate action to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians.

“The Umma looks up to us for guidance and assurances that their faith will not be sacrificed on the altar of political opportunism and greed. Many Muslims are being encouraged to think they have been betrayed to vote for this administration,” he added.

Muslim-Muslim Ticket A Deceit: Sheikh Gumi

by Folarin Kehinde September 13, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, a renowned Islamic cleric has described the Muslim-Muslim ticket of the All Progressive Congress as deceit.

The cleric said that Nigeria needs an experienced leader who will guide the nation in the 2023 elections and beyond.

He advised Nigerians not to employ the politics of religion or ethnicity in choosing leaders in the 2023 general elections.

Speaking in an interview on the forthcoming general election and the state of the nation, Gumi said there was nothing wrong with politicians contesting elections several times, seeking victory.

On Atiku Abubakar, he said “Nigeria needs an experienced politician.

We don’t need a novice to be President. The situation in Nigeria today needs an experienced politician to solve it,” he said.

On Tinubu who said it is his turn to be President, Sheikh Gumi said,  “it is not proper for him to say it is his turn. There is no question to saying it is my turn.

Don’t say it is my turn because if people like you they will vote for you. He is a good administrator, he can do it. The Muslim-Muslim ticket is unnecessary.”

“We all know, all these politicians are looking for votes. The Muslim-Muslim ticket is, let me use Hausa language, is wayo (deceit).

It is not religion. Whether it will work or not, I don’t want to prophesize, but there are a lot of hurdles. In fact, all political parties have hurdles.

Muslim-Muslim ticket is going to be a laboratory test for others to emulate or not”.

On Peter Obi, he said  “youths following him are divided like the adults. He needs to reach out to other segments of Nigerians.

Relying on youths is not enough. He has to be all over the place, and not leaving politics to one region”.

Sheikh Gumi warned that if an inexperienced politician is voted into power, he will find it difficult to assemble the best brains within a possible time framework to set the nation working progressively.

Sheikh Gumi noted that it took President Muhammadu Buhari over six months to appoint Ministers and government officials because he (Buhari) was an inexperienced politician.

“Nigeria is now in the 21st century, people are more educated now. What Nigeria needs now are people with competency.

We should not be talking about the North because the North is no longer monolithic, we should not be talking about the Southwest because no particular person is in control, and we should not be talking about South East, look at how Senator Ifeanyi Uba was attacked by his own people.

“So let’s talk about Nigeria as one united people.

Nobody controls anybody in the country. So let’s move forward. Look at America, nobody is talking about power rotation.

Let’s develop a democracy that we can sustain”. He added.

He said social injustice and poverty were responsible for insecurity in the country, adding that seven years into President Buhari’s government, almost every Nigerian is feeling the pains of socio-economic hardship in the country.

Yoruba Elders And APC Supporters Appeal Tinubu To Drop Shettima, Pick A Christian Running Mate

by Folarin Kehinde August 17, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

More than 5,000 Yoruba Elders majorly members of the ruling All Progressives Congress and supporters of Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Monday took to the streets of Lagos to protest the party’s Muslim-Muslim ticket, calling for a Christian to be incorporated.

The pro-Tinubu protesters, under the aegis of the Coalition of APC Stakeholders Network and Southwest Supporters of Tinubu, began their peaceful walk from Shoprite Ikeja to the State House, Alausa.

According to them, the only obstacle between the former Lagos State and the presidency in 2023 is his running mate, Senator Kassim Shettima.

In his address, the group’s President-General, Elder Arokoyo Samuel, described Tinubu as a “political colossus and astute political strategist” who has successfully built an enviable foundation for the party.

“He has also been crucial in the nation’s democracy being an important figure for almost four decades, hence his emergence as APC presidential candidate was perceived as a breadth of fresh air”.

Being known as a lover of peace, tolerance and exclusivity, he said it was, however, surprising that Tinubu opted for a fellow Muslim as the APC’s vice-presidential candidate.

Rejecting the combination, Samuel said “As a multi-religious and multi-ethnic country, any attempt for one religion to dominate the political structure could only widen the gap of mistrust and destroy the delicate sense of tolerance cultivated over the years.

“Hence, the choice of Shettima was not only ill-timed but also a total disregard for the diversity of the country, crushing the bridges built to connect the religious differences and promote ethnic harmonious co-existence”.

The Coalition of APC Stakeholders Network and Southwest Supporters of Tinubu said it is using peaceful protest to urge the party’s presidential candidate to drop Shettima.

“We want the best for the nation and the Muslim-Muslim ticket isn’t. This will set negative precedents for future generations. We must not fail our children.

“In place of Shettima, Tinubu should pick a Christian from the north-central. Doing so will assure the APC of a higher chance of gathering more votes from the North and across the country.

“The north-central dominated by Christians played a vital role in the 2015 and 2019 presidential elections. As popular as PMB is in the North, the only times he succeeded were when he won this zone, despite always dominating the Muslim-dominated North West and North East in his previous three attempts.

“There are a good number of Christian voters in the following northern states Kogi, Kwara, Plateau, Nasarawa, Benue, Taraba, Kaduna, Adamawa, Gombe, Borno, and the FCT, whose votes can be harvested to about 70% if we have a Northern Christian running mate on the ticket.

“Tinubu will write his name in gold should he make this bold decision. He will become the toast of Christians. Imagine the kind of momentum our leader will gather should he get the backing of almost 50 million Christians in Nigeria.

“It is our prayer that Tinubu will look beyond the surface and make this bold decision. We anticipate his timely action”.
