Edo Records Eight Monkeypox Cases

by Folarin Kehinde July 27, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Edo State Ministry of Health said it has confirmed eight reported cases of monkeypox.

Prof. Akoria Obehi, Edo State Commissioner for Health said, eight persons have so far tested positive for the virus.

She said the government has ramped up surveillance and other activities to curb the spread of infectious disease.

She, however, noted that all persons who were diagnosed with the disease have recovered.

Recall that Global health body, World Health Organization, lists fever, headache, weakness of the body, sore throat, and enlargement of glands under the jaw and in the neck.

The virus can be transmitted from infected animals and rodents such as rats, mice, squirrels, and monkeys through contact with infected blood, body fluids, spots, blisters or scabs, and sharing of objects, according to reports.

Akoria said, “If you suspect any symptoms of monkeypox, kindly visit the nearest health facility for medical attention or call the Acting State Disease Surveillance and Notification Officer (0806 059 3802).

Monkeypox can be sexually transmitted WHO explore, Gates not a fan of crypto.

written by Leading Reporters

The World Health Organization (WHO) is investigating allegations that the monkeypox virus is present in the semen of patients, with the goal of determining if the disease may be transferred sexually, according to a WHO official.

In recent days, scientists in Italy and Germany discovered viral DNA in the sperm of a small number of monkeypox patients, including a lab-tested sample that revealed the virus found in the sperm of a single patient was capable of infecting and multiplying in another person.

Although cryptocurrencies and NFTs have witnessed immense growth in recent years, several people are still not fans of these new technology-based properties. Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates is among this lot. At a TechCrunch conference, Gates said, “These digital asset trends are 100% based on greater fool theory.”

We did not spread Monkeypox through Nigerian Labs – US

by Folarin Kehinde June 1, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The United States has denied social media speculations that the US-controlled laboratories are being used to spread Monkeypox in Nigeria.

The embassy in a statement on Monday, titled, ‘U.S.-Nigeria collaboration on infectious disease threats’, explained that the collaborative work between Nigeria and the US has provided opportunities for technical assistance in capacity building, equipment, commodities/consumables, and funding to critical public health programme, hospitals and laboratories which contribute greatly to the prevention and amelioration of global disease outbreaks.

The statement read in part, “Recent misleading posts on social media wrongly speculate on the origin of the current global outbreak of Monkeypox disease and supposedly call for the World Health Organisation to investigate the so-called ‘U.S.-controlled laboratories’ in Nigeria.

“Such reports are pure fabrication. There is zero merit to any allegations regarding the use of US-assisted Nigerian laboratories in the spread of Monkeypox. Furthermore, there are no “US-controlled” laboratories in Nigeria.

“These falsehoods detract from the work that the United States, in close coordination with Nigeria and multilateral partners, accomplish together on public health that includes disease surveillance, diagnosis, prevention, and control.”

NCDC to Nigerians: Protect Yourselves, No treatment for Monkeypox

by Folarin Kehinde May 24, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control has said there are no specific treatments available for the monkeypox infection.

The centre also urged Nigerians to take certain measures to prevent contracting the disease.

This is just as the Minister of State for Health, Dr Olorunnimbe Mamora, allayed the fears of Nigerians, saying the NCDC is doing everything possible to mitigate the spread of the disease.

The PUNCH reports that monkeypox, a rare disease that is caused by infection with the monkeypox virus, belongs to the Orthopoxvirus genus in the family Poxviridae.

The disease, which according to the World Health Organisation, is endemic to West and Central African countries, has surfaced in some European countries.

While the NCDC noted that 15 out of the 46 suspected cases reported had been confirmed, countries such as the United Kingdom, the United States of America, Portugal, Spain, Israel, Lebanon and Canada among others have started to report cases.

The WHO in a statement it released last week noted that the outbreak of the monkeypox disease is being discovered in countries where it is not endemic.

But the NCDC’s post on its website, which was obtained by The PUNCH on Monday, noted that there are no specific treatments available for monkeypox.

The message read, “There are no specific treatments available for monkeypox infection, although various novel antiviral have in-vitro and animal data supportive effects such as Brincindofocir and Tecovirimat.

“Measures that can be taken to prevent infection with monkeypox virus include: avoiding contact with animals that could harbour the virus, both sick or dead animals in areas where monkeypox cases have occurred; avoiding contact with any material that has been in contact with a sick animal;

“Thoroughly cooking any animal that might have come into contact with an infected animal; handling them with standard precautions and observing monkeypox symptoms for 30 days and washing with soap and water after contact with infected animals.”
