Lionel Messi Makes Secret Return to Camp Nou

by Nelson Ugwuagbo November 10, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Football legend Lionel Messi made a secret visit to the newly renamed Spotify Camp Nou on Sunday night, returning to the stadium where he enjoyed the most glorious years of his career with FC Barcelona.

In a video shared by football journalist Fabrizio Romano on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday, the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner expressed deep emotion about his visit.

“Last night I returned to a place that I miss with my soul. A place where I was immensely happy,” Messi said.

He added, “I hope one day I can come back, and not just to say goodbye as a player, as I could never do.”

Messi departed Barcelona in 2021 after more than two decades at the club, leaving behind a remarkable legacy of records, trophies, and unforgettable moments that defined an era in world football.

Lionel Messi is Back With a Smile as Argentina Win Record 16th Copa America Title

by Leading Reporters July 15, 2024
written by Leading Reporters

Argentina clinched a historic 16th Copa America title with an extra-time 1-0 win against Colombia on Sunday at Florida’s Hard Rock Stadium.

With no goals in the first and second half, the game saw both sides fight hard beyond 90 minutes for a winner to emerge.

Though Colombia pressed for a goal in the second half, with Arias and Davinson Sánchez coming close, Argentina defended resolutely under pressure, seizing their best opportunity to grab a winner in the extra time.

It was not an easy ride for the Argentine team as Messi sustained an ankle injury in the 36th minute after a clash with Santiago Arias. His performance was affected for the rest of the first half, and he was replaced in the 66th minute.

The decisive moment of the fierce battle between the defending Champions and Colombia came when Lautaro Martinez, a late substitute, scored the winning goal in the 112th minute.

Courtesy of an accurate fine pass from Giovani Lo Celso, Martinez, the competition’s top scorer, brilliantly lifted the ball over Colombia’s goalkeeper, Camilo Vargas, sparking celebrations among the Argentines.

This victory adds to Argentina’s recent successes. It follows their 2022 World Cup win and their 2021 Copa America triumph, serving as a fitting farewell for Lionel Messi, who is expected to retire from international football after this tournament.

The victory marked the end of international careers for Ángel Di María and Nicolás Otamendi, who are retiring from the national team at 36 years old.

France Football Snubs Lionel Messi In 2022 Ballon d’Or Shortlist

by Folarin Kehinde August 13, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

For the first time since 2005, Seven time Balon d’or winner Lionel Messi was not among the 30 players shortlisted in 2022 Ballon d’or.

The Ballon d’Or committee has acknowledged that, unlike Cristiano Ronaldo, the current winner Lionel Messi’s first season with Paris Saint-Germain was not good enough to get him on the shortlist for the 2022 award.

Top players like Cristiano Ronaldo, Karim Benzema, Mohammed Salah and others were included in the 30 men shortlist, so it was a disappointment for fans of the Argentine as he was not included.

Messi’s disappointing first season in Paris ended with him failing to make the final 30-man shortlist for the Ballon d’Or for the first time in 17 years. He finished the season with 11 goals and 15 assists in 34 games, a dismal total by Messi’s high standards.

Fans were outraged by the decision to leave Messi off the shortlist, and France Football, the organisation behind the award, quickly put together a Q&A session to try to put their minds at ease.

“Inevitably, Lionel Messi, with his 15 appearances in a row since 2006, his seven Ballon d’Or victories, his title holder status, weighs very heavily when it comes to the final choice,” the organisers said.

“The Argentinian was part of the discussions to integrate the 30, but the new criteria for the Ballon d’Or were unfavourable to him: disappearance of the criterion of a player’s entire career, and new periodicity, modelled on a season of football and no longer over a calendar year, which does not make it possible to integrate the Copa America of July 11, 2021.

“And then, it must be admitted that his first season in Paris was very disappointing both in terms of the visual impression and the statistics.”

CanCristiano Ronaldo join Lionel Messi at PSG? Man Utd star’s agent offer CR7 to French club

by Leading Reporters July 13, 2022
written by Leading Reporters

Cristiano Ronaldo is reportedly set to leave Manchester United this summer having already informed the club that he wants to spend the final few years of his career playing for a club competing in the Champions League. United cannot offer Ronaldo Champions League football next season as the club has been relegated to the Europa League after failing to finish top four in the English Premier League last season.

United endured a dismal campaign last season missing out on a top-four spot and getting knocked out of the Champions League from the Last 16. Ronaldo, who returned to United from Juventus last summer, has never played in the Europa League so far in his career.

Apart from his desire to play in the Champions League, Ronaldo is also reportedly upset with United’s lack of ambition in the transfer market so far this summer. The superstar forward is thus looking for a move away from Old Trafford with his agent Jorge Mendes offering his services to several top clubs.

As per a report in ESPN, Ronaldo’s agent Mendes recently discussed the possibility of the Portuguese star joining French club Paris Saint-Germain (PSG0 this summer. Mendes met with PSG’s sporting director Luis Campos and club president Nasser Al-Khelaifi to discuss the move.

However, as per the report, PSG have rejected the chance to sign Ronaldo for various reasons. The club believe they do not have room for Ronaldo in the squad as they already have the likes of Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappe and Neymar in their star-studded attacking unit. PSG also reportedly believe they can’t fit Ronaldo in their wage bill considering his staggering salary.

The prospect of witnessing two legends of the game – Ronaldo and Messi play together for a club can be a salivating prospect for football fans around the globe. But it seems the two legends are unlikely to don the same jersey anytime soon in the near future.

With Ronaldo already 37 and Messi also entering the wrong end of his 30s, fans might never get to witness two greats play together for the same club. While Messi had left his boyhood club FC Barcelona to join PSG last season, Ronaldo had made a dream comeback to United.

Barcelona gives Messi, Neymar opening to return from PSG

by Leading Reporters May 26, 2022
written by Leading Reporters

Barcelona president, Joan Laporta, has said Neymar and Lionel Messi can only return to the club from Paris Saint-Germain as free agents.

According to Laporta, it would make “no sense” to pay money for players that both previously played for the club.

“Who doesn’t like Ney? He is an exceptional player, but he has [three] years on his contract with PSG. He is effectively enslaved to money.

“The only way he could come back to Barca is for free. It would be irrational to pay a transfer fee for a player you have already had.

“Leo left how he left. We would all have liked him to end his sporting career here, but because of [LaLiga’s] fair play rules and because of PSG’s offer, it was not to be.

“If he wants to return one day, it would have to be for free. And the technical staff would have to decide if he fits the new project or not” Laporta told L’Esportiu.

PSG Beat FFP Rule As Messi Reunites With Neymar

by Leading Reporters August 11, 2021
written by Leading Reporters

The reality of seeing Lionel Messi team up again with Neymar especially in a team like Paris Saint-Germain who already boast of Kylian Mbappe, Mauro Icardi, and Di Maria shows how the Qatar-backed French side is beating the Financial Fair Play rules.

Not all the fans will rejoice. Many will struggle to come to terms with Messi leaving Barcelona.

Others would have preferred to see him go to a club where he really could have a transformative impact, like Diego Maradona at Napoli.

But modern football is now dominated by a narrow elite financed by mega-rich owners, state wealth in the case of Qatar-backed Paris Saint-Germain and Abu Dhabi’s Manchester City.

Add in Roman Abramovich’s Champions League winners Chelsea and even the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid can’t keep up.

Barca ruined themselves in the transfer market trying to replace Neymar to the extent they could not keep their greatest ever player due to La Liga’s financial fair play rules.

FFP Rules Is A Ruse?

PSG are not immune from the financial difficulties caused by the pandemic, but they are better placed to survive the economic downturn.

PSG lost 124.9 million euros before tax in the 2019/20 season which was curtailed by the pandemic.

Last season’s figures are likely to be far worse, reportedly around 230 million euros, with PSG almost entirely deprived of gate receipts as games were played behind closed doors while French TV revenue went off a cliff after the collapse of a record deal with Mediapro.

Yet they have splashed out in the transfer market, spending 60 million euros ($71 million) on Inter Milan right-back Achraf Hakimi and signing several big-name players who were out of contract in Sergio Ramos, Georginio Wijnaldum and Gianluigi Donnarumma.

Wijnaldum was snatched from under the noses of…Barcelona.

PSG can do it because their Qatari owners are there to cover the losses and because, for now at least, French league rules do not stop clubs from having wages to income ratio of almost 100 per cent, as it was in 2019/20.

They have also been helped by UEFA’s decision to soften its financial fair play rules to compensate for revenue shortfalls caused by the pandemic, meaning assessments of the 2020 and 2021 financial years would be done together rather than separately.

Clubs are expected to be able to register losses over the 30 million euro limit provided they can show they were caused by the pandemic.

Critics say that FFP is no longer fit for purpose, and PSG’s rivals would claim to sign Messi, allied to their other summer spending and the fact they already have Neymar and Kylian Mbappe on their books, means the French club are showing a blatant disregard for the rules.

An Imaginary Front Line For Pochettino

Nevertheless, signing Messi certainly improves their chances of winning the prize they want more than anything, that their Qatari owners have been chasing ever since buying the club.

In May 2011 Messi inspired Pep Guardiola’s Barcelona to a 3-1 win over Manchester United in the Champions League final. A few weeks later Qatar Sports Investments bought a controlling stake in PSG.

In August 2017 PSG made Neymar and Mbappe the two most expensive signings in history. Now they have Messi.

“Every coach in the world would like to have the best player in the world in their team,” admitted manager Mauricio Pochettino.

PSG’s summer recruitment already looked impressive. They were especially crying out for a new midfielder and a right-back needs that were addressed with the arrivals of Wijnaldum and Hakimi.

A team that missed out on the Ligue 1 title last season but who in the last two campaigns reached a Champions League final and semi-final, now appear well equipped to land their first European Cup.

The model is the Barcelona team of 2014/15 which won the treble with Messi scoring 58 goals and Neymar 39. The third man, then, was Luis Suarez who added 25 goals. Now the third man will be Mbappe.

It is over to Pochettino, Messi’s compatriot, to accommodate them all, and Angel di Maria, and find the right balance to make his a team of champions as well as a modern-footballing version of the Harlem Globetrotters.
