Kidnapped passengers escape as bandits doze off in forest

by Folarin Kehinde May 24, 2026
written by Folarin Kehinde

Few of the passengers who were abducted along Itobe-Ajegwu-Anyigba road in Ofu local government of Kogi State have escaped.

The kidnappers were said to have attacked two buses filled with passengers.

One of the buses has registration number, Ebonyi NKE 737 XA.

A motorcycle rider was also said to have been forcefully whisked to unknown destination alongside the travellers in the incident which reportedly happened on Saturday.

A resident, Ahiaba Michael, said security operatives, including vigilantes and hunters, trailed the armed hoodlums shortly after the incident but were not successful.

However, a security source disclosed that barely three hours after the attack, one Monday Agi was arrested in connection with the incident.

The suspect allegedly lost his way due to mounting pressure by the security personnel.

The source said: “When interrogated, the suspect claimed to be on board of a trailer from Ekiti, but decided to alight around the scene of the incident to continue the journey by trekking to his destination.

“He said when he heard gunshot, he decided to flee into the bush with two herders whom he claimed he did not know.”

The source added that the suspect is already in the police custody while the manhunt against the armed hoodlums is being intensified.

Meanwhile, three of the kidnapped victims, who identified themselves as Micheal Adejo, Monday and Mariam Yakubu, claimed to have escaped from their abductors after they dozed off in the forest.

The escapees noted that the hoodlums numbering up to 10 operated with AK 47 and Pump Action rifles.

“The bus I boarded suddenly ran into their barricade. On stopping, they filed us out, wielding AK 47 rifles and pump Action guns . The second bus behind us was shot at and the driver rammed into cashew trees. All of us were taken to the bush thereafter.

“On our way, we were stopped, and asked to lay face down. In the process, they searched our pockets and evacuated everything in it , including, money, our cell phones and other valuables. We are many , all passengers from two Hummer buses,” he said.

According to Adaji, another escapee, they crawled out of their assailants’ cell when they retired to a place and slept off.

“When I noticed that the hoodlums closer to my position started sleeping , I started crawling gradually. After a distance was covered, I got up ,and with luck I ran until I reach a village with these two others,” said Adaji.

The Kogi state police command’s spokesperson, ASP Saliu Oyiza Afusat, was contacted over the incident , but failed to respond to text and call asthe time of filing this report.

Unknown hoodlums wielding cutlasses and firearms have reportedly attacked the family residence of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, in Obeiba-Ihima area, Okehi Local Government Area of Kogi State.

Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert focused on the Lake Chad region, disclosed this in a post on his X handle on Thursday.

Makama said intelligence sources told him that the Chief Security Officer to the Senator, Yakubu Ovanja, reported the incident to security authorities.

According to the security expert, Ovanja revealed that the attack occurred around 1:00 a.m. and involved at least three armed individuals who vandalized the building, including shattering window panes.

“Following a distress alert, a team of security operatives from Okehi Division swiftly mobilized to the scene. While no casualties were reported and no arrests have been made, the premises were documented and preliminary investigations have commenced.

“Police sources said the motive behind the attack remains unknown as investigations continue,” Makama said.

Senator Natasha Breaks Restrictions, Lands by Helicopter at Homecoming Rally

by Folarin Kehinde April 1, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has defied a state-imposed ban on rallies and movement restrictions to make a dramatic entry into her hometown in Kogi Central, arriving at the venue in Okehi Local Government Area of Kogi State by helicopter.

POLITICS NIGERIA previously reported that a large crowd of supporters had gathered in anticipation of her arrival, holding placards and chanting slogans in solidarity with the senator.

The senator had on Tuesday morning warned that Senate President Godswill Akpabio, Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo, and former Governor Yahaya Bello should be held responsible if any violence disrupts the Sallah celebrations.

“My dear people of Kogi Central, I look forward to our PEACEFUL Sallah celebrations today. However, should we be met with or infiltrated by violence, Nigerians should hold Gov Ododo, Yahaya Bello & SP Godswill Akpabio wholly responsible,” she wrote on her verified Facebook page.Nigerian cultural tours

Despite calls from the police to cancel the rally, Akpoti-Uduaghan remained firm in her decision to meet with her constituents. She dismissed rumours of a canceled trip and urged her supporters to disregard misinformation.

The senator, a member of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), is currently serving a six-month suspension from the Senate for allegedly violating legislative rules. Additionally, she faces a potential recall, allegedly backed by figures from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Akpoti-Uduaghan has been at the center of several controversies, including a recent accusation against Akpabio of sexual harassment.

Police Warn Senator Natasha Against Returning Home

by Folarin Kehinde April 1, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The police have asked Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduagan to cancel her planned Sallah rally in the Central Senatorial district of Kogi State.

The State Commissioner of Police, Miller Dantawaye made this known on Tuesday in a statement signed by the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP William Aya.

According to the statement, the Kogi police boss said the rally is against the proclamation on ban on political gathering by the state government issued on Monday.

The statement said, “Following the intelligence report on security threats in Kogi State and the subsequent ban on all forms of Rally and procession by the Kogi State Government, the Nigeria Police Force, Kogi State Police Command has called on the organisers of planned rally at Okene to cancel such event in the interest of the peace in Kogi State.

“The call for cancellation becomes necessary, noting that intelligence reveals that some hoodlums plan to hijack the process and cause disturbance of peace in the State. The Command cannot afford to jeopardize the existing peace the State is currently enjoying.

Despite the Monday proclamation by the state government banning political gathering or rallies, Akpoti-Uduaghan has vowed to continue with her “homecoming”, adding that she’s only coming to the state to celebrate Eid Fitr with her constituents.

Jail Break:12 inmates escape from Kogi prison

by Folarin Kehinde March 24, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Kogi state government has confirmed that Twelve inmates have escaped in a jail break in the early hours of Monday in the State.

This was disclosed in a statement issued by the Commissioner for Information and Communication, Kingsley Femi Fanwo.

Fanwo said the state government will work with security operatives to unravel the cause of the break as well as ensure that those escapees are rearrested.

He assured citizens that the government is taking decisive steps to prevent a recurrence.

“The theory that the inmates escaped through the tower without causing any structural damage raises serious concerns. This calls for a thorough investigation to determine the exact circumstances of the escape, arrest the fleeing inmates, and identify possible saboteurs within the system.

“Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo has directed the State Security Adviser to collaborate with the Federal Correctional Centre and other security agencies to ensure such security breaches do not happen again. The state government has also reaffirmed its commitment to supporting federal security agencies through logistics and other necessary resources to enhance their operational effectiveness.”

Fanwo commended the swift response of security agencies in handling the situation and urged residents to remain vigilant. “We call on the public to report any suspicious individuals in their communities. Anyone found harbouring an escaped inmate will be held accountable,” he warned.

“While investigations continue, the government has assured residents that the situation is under control. “There is no cause for panic. We encourage citizens to go about their daily activities as normal, knowing that the security of lives and property remains our top priority,” Fanwo added.

JUST IN: Kogi state high court sacks Ohinoyi of Ebiraland

by Folarin Kehinde February 3, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

A Kogi State High Court sitting in Lokoja has removed His Royal Majesty, Ahmed Muhammed Tajani Anaje, as the Ohinoyi of Ebiraland, barring him from performing any royal duties.

Presiding over the case on Monday, Justice Salisu Umar ruled that Anaje must cease parading himself as the paramount ruler of Ebiraland.

The ruling follows a legal challenge filed by Dr. Barnabas Adeku Ojiah and two others against the Governor of Kogi State and Anaje.

The petitioners contested the legality of Anaje’s appointment, citing procedural irregularities in the selection process.

Anaje was appointed by former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello in January 2024, a decision that has been the subject of controversy and legal battles.

BREAKING: Ex-Kogi Governor Yahaya Bello to spend Christmas, New in Kuje Prison

by Folarin Kehinde December 10, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

A Federal Capital Territory High Court has ordered the remand of former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello in the Kuje correctional centre until January 29, 2025.

The erstwhile governor’s trial has also been adjourned till February 25, 2025.

The development comes after the court rejected Bello’s bail application, citing procedural irregularities in the filing of the application.

According to Justice Maryanne Anenih, the bail application was premature as it was filed before Bello was present in court or in custody.

Bello, alongside two others, is facing charges brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over an alleged N110 billion money laundering case.

The defendants, in case number CR/7781, face charges of conspiracy, criminal breach of trust, and unlawful possession of property.

According to the EFCC, the former governor is accused of misappropriating state funds to acquire several properties, including No. 35 Danube Street in Maitama District, Abuja (worth N950 million), No. 1160 Cadastral Zone C03 in Gwarimpa II District, Abuja (worth N100 million), and No. 2 Justice Chukwudifu Oputa Street in Asokoro, Abuja (worth N920 million).

The former governor has been in detention since November 25.

BREAKING: Kogi governorship candidate arrested

by Folarin Kehinde November 11, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Kogi State governorship candidate of the Action Alliance, Olayinka Braimoh, and his security detail, have been arrested by security operatives in Kabba.

Confirming the incident to journalists on Saturday, Braimoh’s media aide, Musa Yakubu, said operatives arrested the governorship candidate and seven of his security detail after they claimed to have found campaign materials in his car.

Earlier, there were apprehensions when his aides and party officials could not reach him on the phone, sparking fears of a possible kidnap.

“The last time I heard from him was in the morning when he called from Kabba town, but all attempts to get through to him since that time proved abortive,” Yakubu said.

“His mobile lines have been switched off, including that of his entourage.”

Yakubu had raised the alarm that the candidate’s “detractors” might be behind the situation and called on the security agencies to locate his whereabouts.

Leading reporters gathered that due to the arrest, the governorship candidate could not cast his vote during the election.
