Flood Destroys Over 14,000 Farms In Kano

by Folarin Kehinde September 22, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Massive flood has destroyed about 14,496 farms in five local governments of Kano State.

This information was revealed by the Director General of the National Emergency Management Authority (NEMA), Mustapha Habib, during an on-the-spot assessment tour of communities ravaged by flood in Warawa and Wudil LGAs of the state on Wednesday.

Few days ago the popular, Tiga dam overflowed its banks, and flooded Kiru, Kura, Bebeji Wudil Rano, Warawa and Dawakin Kudu local government areas, where thousands of farmlands were submerged.

The affected communities are Warawa Gishiri Wuya, where 1,113 farms were washed away, Larabar Gadon Sarki with 1,135 farms affected and Wudil, which had 4,808 farms destroyed as a result of the disaster.

Other affected areas include Bebeji, 1,405 farms; Rano, 260 farms; and Dawakin Kudu Local Government Area, 5,775 farms.

According to Mustapha, the President, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retd.), had directed that an assessment of the damage caused by the flood be conducted immediately.

The Director-General gave the assurance that the assessment report would be compiled and submitted to the ministry of humanitarian affairs, disaster management and social development for onward submission to President Buhari.

The executive secretary of Kano State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), Dr Saleh Jili, explained that the increase in farm flood was a result of the spillway of Tiga Dam.

While speaking on behalf of the victims, Malam Nasiru Qayya, appealed to the federal government to assist them and also repair the road from Ladin Makole to Larabar Gadon Sarki Warawa local government.

Kano State Government Bans Keke Napep Operations From 10pm

by Folarin Kehinde July 18, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The kano state Government has just banned keke napep, popularly known in Kano as ‘A Daidata Sahu’ from driving around in the state any later than 10pm.

In a statement issued and signed by the state Commissioner for Information, Muhammad Garba, the ban takes effect from Thursday, July 21, 2022 from 10pm – 6pm.

The decision, according to the statement, was reached at the end of a state security meeting.

The measure was part of ongoing efforts by the state government to ensure security of lives and property in the state.

To this end, the commissioner urged tricycle operators to comply and stop operating at the stipulated time, warning that security agents would strictly enforce the ban.

Hoodlums including terrorists and bandits have reportedly been using tricycles to perpetrate their nefarious activities in the state.

Kano state has now joined the list of states to place limit on the movement of tricycle riders. Other states include Lagos State, Kogi State and the FCT.

APC auditor, Reps member, Ganduje’s chief of staff dump APC for NNPP

Kano State Governor, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje has directed the State’s Head of Civil Service, Usman Bala to oversee the Office of the Chief of Staff to the Governor with immediate effect.

The State Chief of Staff, Ali Bukar Makoda, had resigned his position after decamping from the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC, to the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP, late Friday.

However, Ganduje in a statement issued by the commissioner for Information, Malam Muhammad Garba, indicated that the supervision would be pending the appointment of a substantive Chief of Staff.

The Governor, the statement added, expressed the hope that there would be effective supervision and coordination by the Head of Service, having served in the office before.

Usman Bala was the State Chief of Staff during the first tenure of Governor Ganduje, but was sacked and appointed a Permanent Secretary.
