Fuel Price in Nigeria Set to Increase amid US War with Iran

by Folarin Kehinde March 2, 2026
written by Folarin Kehinde

Nigeria could soon face another round of petrol and diesel price increases following renewed conflict between the United States and Iran, which has unsettled the global crude oil market.

Energy analysts say escalating hostilities in the Middle East are already pushing risk premiums into oil prices and could directly affect fuel costs in Nigeria despite recent gains in local refining capacity.

Checks by LEADING REPORTERS in major cities show petrol selling between N824 and N880 per litre, depending on location and logistics. This comes shortly after the Dangote Petroleum Refinery reduced its ex-depot price of petrol from N799 to N774 per litre in February 2026.

However, experts warn that the relief may be short-lived if crude oil prices approach the $90 per barrel mark due to the conflict.

The tension has disrupted tanker movements around the strategic Strait of Hormuz, a key route for global oil shipments. The corridor handles more than 20 per cent of the world’s oil supply, and any threat to it usually sends prices upward.

Speaking on the implications for Nigeria, Kelvin Emmanuel, Chief Executive Officer of Dairy Hills, said the country remains exposed because the Dangote refinery still relies heavily on imported crude.

He said, “Dangote currently processes an average of 18 million barrels of crude oil monthly. Out of this, about 12 million barrels are imported, while he gets about 5.7 million barrels, which is the equivalent of six cargoes, from the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited.”

He added that rising war risk insurance premiums for tankers would further increase landing costs of crude in Nigeria.

According to him, “If crude prices rise above $90 per barrel, the refiner will have to revise the price of PMS and diesel in Nigeria.”

Emmanuel also questioned the transparency of the naira-for-crude deal, stating, “The government claims that it supplies him nearly 190,000 barrels under the naira-based crude swap but is unable to account for the volume of cargoes given under said arrangement, or specify the equivalent petrol and diesel output.”

Olatide Jeremiah, Chief Executive Officer of Petroleumprice.ng, said Nigeria’s dependence on foreign crude makes local fuel prices vulnerable to international shocks.

He explained, “Nigeria is the largest crude oil producer in Africa and at the same time hosts the biggest refinery on the continent and the seventh largest globally. Ideally, a hike in global crude prices should not have a direct impact on local fuel prices.”

But he warned that the situation is different in practice.

He said, “Fuel prices will be at the mercy of oil prices. Petroleum traders in Nigeria have been tracking events between Iran and the US, and a surge in oil prices is expected. For Nigeria, revenue will increase, but Nigerians should brace for higher fuel prices on Monday, no doubt.”

Jeremiah urged the federal government to boost crude production and curb oil theft, describing the crisis as a wake-up call for domestic supply to refineries.

An energy law expert at the University of Lagos, Dayo Ayoade, said Nigeria can no longer shield citizens from global oil price swings following the removal of fuel subsidies.

He noted, “Without subsidies, any crude price increase will directly impact fuel prices at the pump. More revenue may come in, but we must remain cautious.”

Petroleum economist Wumi Iledare cautioned against panic, saying the global oil market is now more diversified than in past crises.

He said, “We must resist the temptation to interpret the US–Iran strike as the beginning of another historic oil shock.”

Meanwhile, the National Publicity Secretary of the Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria, Chinedu Ukadike, said marketers were watching developments closely.

He stated, “Anything that affects the international oil market will affect local supply and prices. We are watching the trend and the reactions of the refinery and the government.”

Oil Prices Drop as Hopes Rise for USA-Iran Nuclear Deal

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 15, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Oil prices fell sharply on Thursday amid growing optimism over a potential breakthrough in nuclear talks between the United States and Iran.

The decline followed comments by U.S. President Donald Trump, who said a deal with Tehran was “getting close.” U.S. media also reported that Iran may be willing to accept significant limitations on its nuclear programme in exchange for sanctions relief.

Trump made the remarks in Qatar during a tour of the Gulf region, expressing optimism about avoiding a military confrontation with Iran.

“We’re not going to be making any nuclear dust in Iran,” he said. “I think we’re getting close to maybe doing a deal without having to do this.”

The two countries recently concluded their fourth round of negotiations—the highest-level talks since Trump withdrew from the 2015 nuclear agreement in 2018.

Both major crude benchmarks fell by more than three percent following the developments. Prices had already been under pressure earlier in the day amid signs that Tehran could be open to U.S. demands.

Citing U.S. broadcaster NBC News, reports said an adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei indicated that Tehran might accept broad restrictions on its nuclear activities if it leads to the lifting of economic sanctions.

Israel Launches Air Strikes On Iran, Saudi Arabia Reacts

by Folarin Kehinde October 26, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

In a significant escalation of hostilities, Israel announced “precise strikes” on military targets in Iran on Saturday, following months of missile attacks from Tehran.

An AFP journalist in Tehran reported hearing multiple explosions as the Israeli Defence Forces (IDF) declared that the strikes were in response to continuous aggression from the Iranian regime.

“In response to months of continuous attacks from the regime in Iran against the State of Israel, the IDF is conducting precise strikes on military targets in Iran,” the military stated.

This operation follows a missile strike from Iran on October 1, with Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant vowing a “deadly, precise and surprising” response.

The backdrop to this conflict includes the deadliest attack in Israel’s history on October 7, 2023, which resulted in the deaths of 1,206 individuals, predominantly civilians.

Israel’s military efforts have since expanded to include operations against Iranian-backed Hezbollah in Lebanon to secure its northern border.

Military spokesman Daniel Hagari urged citizens to remain “alert and vigilant” amid escalating tensions.

Iran’s October 1 strike, the second direct assault on Israel, followed an Israeli air raid that killed Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and Revolutionary Guards general Abbas Nilforoushan on September 27.

In response to Israel’s military actions, Saudi Arabia condemned the strikes, emphasising its “firm position rejecting escalation” in the region, which threatens the security and stability of Middle Eastern nations.

The Saudi foreign ministry reiterated the need for restraint to prevent further conflict.

We’re fully ready for war– Iran to Israel

by Folarin Kehinde October 2, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Iran has said that it was fully ready for whatever Israel may come up with.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, gave the order to launch missiles against Israel.

Daily post reported that Iran launched over 180 ballistic missiles into Israel early Tuesday.

The Israeli military said it has received no reports of injuries from the Iranian missile attack.

The Israeli military spokesperson, Rear Adm Daniel Hagari, said the country’s air defenses intercepted many of the incoming missiles, though some landed in central and southern Israel.

However, a senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran “is fully ready for any retaliation”.

Meanwhile, the Iranian mission to the United Nations has defended the country’s missile launches against Israel, calling it a response to “terrorist acts” by Israel.

WHO Move Against E-Cigarettes, Vows to take action

by Leading Reporters July 28, 2021
written by Leading Reporters

The World Health Organisation, on Tuesday, urged governments to regulate the use of electronic cigarettes as they pose great dangers to human health.

The WHO Director-General, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said nicotine was highly addictive and must be regulated to curb the tobacco industry’s “criminal” tactics to get young people hooked on the substance.

Ghebreyesus made the appeal in a WHO report titled ‘Global Tobacco Epidemic 2021”.

He warned that electronic nicotine delivery systems (ENDS) are harmful and should be regulated for maximum public health protection.

The report also showed that tobacco leads to eight million deaths annually, adding that over one million die from second-hand smoking.

“Where they are not banned, governments should adopt appropriate policies to protect their populations from the harms of ENDS, and to prevent their uptake by children, adolescents and other vulnerable groups,” it said.

According to the report, the manufacturers of these products often target youths with thousands of tantalising flavours and reassuring statements.

‘It’s The Most Criminal Act…We Can’t Let That Happen’

Leader of WHO Tobacco Free Initiative, Vinayak Prasad, also noted that targeting children with toxic and poisonous products is a criminal action.

“It’s the most criminal act. And it’s a human rights violation. They run the risk of being addicted for the rest of their lives,” he said.

He further noted that following the huge drop in the sales of cigarette, tobacco companies have developed new products like e-cigarettes and heated-tobacco products while lobbying governments to limit their regulation.

“Their goal is simple: to hook another generation on nicotine. We can’t let that happen.

“Distinguishing the nicotine-containing products from the non-nicotine, or even from some tobacco-containing products, can be almost impossible. This is just one way the industry subverts and undermines tobacco control measures,” he said.

According to the report, the sales of ENDS have been banned in 32 countries including Argentina, Brazil, Egypt, Ethiopia, India, Iran, Iraq, Mexico, North Korea and Singapore.

It also stated that 79 countries have adopted measures to either prohibit the use of such products in public places, prohibit their advertising, promotion and sponsorship or require the display of health warnings on packaging.

“This still leaves 84 countries where they are not regulated or restricted in any way,” the WHO said.

The report noted that there were still over billion active smokers around the world.
