After 30-day medical trip to the UK, Ganduje returns to Nigeria

by Folarin Kehinde August 21, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The immediate past National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje, on Wednesday, returned to Nigeria from London.

The former Kano State governor had travelled to the United Kingdom for medical treatment shortly after his controversial resignation as APC national chairman.

Confirming the development to The PUNCH, his former Chief of Staff, Mohammed Garba, said Ganduje arrived in the country in the early hours of Wednesday after spending about a month abroad.

“Yes, he is back in Nigeria today. He is full of life and has returned to his residence,” Garba stated.

He added that Ganduje departed Nigeria for London five days after stepping down from the party’s leadership to undergo medical care.

Ganduje, who became APC National Chairman in August 2023, had reportedly resigned on June 27, 2025, ostensibly over ill health.

He was subsequently inaugurated as the Chairman of the Board of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria on July 9, while former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Netanwe Yilwatda, has since replaced him as the APC National Chairman.

BREAKING: APC National Chairman Umar Ganduje resigns

by Folarin Kehinde June 27, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), has resigned from his position.

Ganduje’s resignation was confirmed in a post by a former media aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad on Friday.

Ahmad wrote: “The National Chairman of our great party, the All Progressives Congress(APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has resigned from his position, effective immediately, as confirmed by multiple sources.”

Though APC has yet to issue an official statement on his resignation, sources familiar with the matter hinted that Ganduje cited health reasons, suggesting that political tension within the party may have also played a role in his decision to step down.

2027: We will vote Atiku if Shettima is dropped – APC members threaten as Crisis rocks Party

by Folarin Kehinde June 16, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Tension gripped Sunday’s All Progressives Congress North‑East stakeholders’ meeting in Gombe after delegates threatened to back former Vice President Atiku Abubakar if current Vice President Kashim Shettima is removed from President Bola Tinubu’s 2027 ticket.

The gathering at the International Conference Centre was intended to reaffirm support for Mr. Tinubu’s second‑term bid, but erupted in chaos when Zonal Vice Chairman Mustapha Salihu concluded his speech without mentioning Shettima. Video footage showed an enraged party member hurling a chair at Salihu as he fled the stage, while another delegate lobbed a plastic bucket in protest.

Salihu had told the audience, “We have no business not supporting this party with all the juicy appointments and responsibilities given to us by this government. I would want all members of the zonal executive committee to stand up so that we will do the proper endorsement, because it is the zonal executive committee that holds the ticket. We want to reaffirm and also adopt the endorsement earlier done by the national working committee, that Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu is endorsed to be a sole candidate for the 2027 election.”

The omission prompted a chorus of “Shettima! Shettima! Shettima!” and swift intervention by security operatives. “It’s an insult to the entire region that our own son, the Vice President, was not even mentioned,” fumed a Borno delegate. “This is a calculated attempt to sideline Shettima, and we will resist it with everything we have.”

Before the fracas, the governors of Yobe, Borno and Gombe—Mai Mala Buni, Babagana Zulum and Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya—had each voiced their backing for the Tinubu‑Shettima ticket. Governor Yahaya declared, “The North‑East is fully behind the President and the Vice President. Their leadership has brought renewed hope to this region.”

LEADING REPORTERS learned that Despite that show of unity, APC National Chairman Abdullahi Ganduje’s closing remarks failed to quell anger. Though he acknowledged Shettima—“we are proud of his deputy, his Vice President, it is one ticket according to the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria”—many delegates remained unconvinced and chanted, “No Shettima, no APC in the North‑East.”

Several threatened mass defection to the Peoples Democratic Party. “If Shettima is dropped, I will personally lead my people to vote for Atiku,” warned an Adamawa chieftain. “We won’t be taken for granted.”

The meeting ended abruptly as dignitaries exited amid shouts and chairs being thrown. Outside, police deployed teargas to disperse hundreds of agitated party faithful. An eyewitness, James Abass, warned, “This is more than just a misunderstanding. It’s a sign of serious internal divisions within the ruling party that could trigger mass defections or the rise of a counter‑movement if not urgently addressed.”

A source familiar with the zonal working committee disclosed that all North‑East NWC members—except Mustapha Salihu—had formally supported Tinubu and Shettima. The lone dissenting voice, the source said, was Salihu himself, against four colleagues who backed the joint ticket.

Ganduje welcomes Ned Nwoko to APC, says ruling party will takeover Delta state in 2027

by Folarin Kehinde February 6, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Abdullahi Ganduje, has declared that the ruling party will dislodge the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Delta State during the 2027 general elections.

Ganduje made the comment on Wednesday at the APC national secretariat in Abuja while officially receiving Senator Ned Nwoko, who defected from the PDP to the APC.

A formal letter announcing Senator Nwoko’s defection was read on the floor of the Senate by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Welcoming the Delta North Senator, Ganduje stated that all three senators from Delta State are now in the APC, positioning the party for a strong challenge in the next election.

“You are most welcome, distinguished Senator Nwoko. Our great party is the most nationalistic party, committed to national integration, unity, and prosperity,” Ganduje said.

He credited President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s leadership for driving the party’s appeal, citing economic and security improvements.

“So the country is working. This is our party. We believe in internal democracy, and we know our chapter in Delta will implement this principle,” he added.

Ganduje expressed confidence in the APC’s chances of taking over Delta, stressing the need for grassroots mobilization and a well-structured party organization

We’ll use Edo template in Ondo, Anambra – Ganduje brags

by Folarin Kehinde September 23, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

…..says 2027 will be a walkover

National chairman of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, has said the party would use its template in Edo State governorship election to win the November 16 election in Ondo State.

Ganduje, a former governor of Kano State, also said the party would use the same template to win Anambra currently under the control of the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and other states in the South East in future elections.

He spoke on Monday in Abuja, while celebrating the victory of Senator Monday Okpebholo with members of the Edo state election situation room.

Ganduje said a big party like the APC ought to have been fully in charge of the South East geo-political zone, and urged party leaders at all levels to work hard towards actualising the party’s objectives.

“We have started working to develop strategies to win these states. Next year, Anambra state will follow. Let me remind you that we have a project which we named political demarginalisation of South East geo-political zone.

“That project is also a task that must be done. We will face South East zone with 5 states. We already have 2, but 2 is too small for a big party like ours. We will face that state and see how we can recover many states in our favour,” Ganduje said.

2027 will be walkover for APC – N/Central elders

Meanwhile, some elders of the APC from the North Central led by a former Senate President, Ameh Ebute, have expressed optimism that the 2027 general election would be a walkover for the party.
They spoke while on a visit to the party’s national secretariat in Abuja on Monday to congratulate Ganduje, on his victory at the High Court in a suit which sought his removal as chairman.

You must not fall asleep –President Tinubu tells now APC chairman Ganduje

by Folarin Kehinde August 3, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reacted to the emergence of ex-Kano State governor Abdullahi Ganduje and Senator Bashir as chairman and secretary of the All Progressives Party (APC).

In a statement on Thursday by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Ajuri Ngelale, after APC’s national executive meeting, Tinubu urged the elected leaders to promote unity, peace, and love among all members of the party.

According to him, Ganduje and Ajibola should work hard for the party and ensure governance and quality service delivery.

“You are the makers and drivers of the party. When we have all passengers inside the bus, the driver must not fall asleep. The brake must also work well. Party loyalty must exist,” he stated.
