written by Folarin Kehinde

An unconfirmed number of people have died in a tanker fire accident that occurred at midnight along the Abeokuta–Sagamu Expressway.

The spokesperson for the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), Babatunde Akinbiyi, said the incident happened at about 1 a.m. on Friday. He explained that a 33,000-litre petrol tanker overturned due to excessive speeding, spilling its contents on the highway.

Speaking to newsmen, Akinbiyi said, “The case of an inferno caused by a 30,000-litre fuel-laden tanker which fell on its side and spilled its contents around 0100hrs today, along the Abeokuta–Kobape–Siun–Sagamu Interchange stretch of the PMB Expressway, due to excessive speed and loss of control, has been reported.

“The effect of the unfortunate incident also extended to the burning of a truck and a tow vehicle along the roadside, as well as the destruction of a PHCN cable supplying electricity to Mowe and environs.

“Though the casualty figures cannot be ascertained presently, rescue and emergency services made up of TRACE, Ogun State and Nestlé PLC Fire Service, FRSC, and the Police are still on the ground to restore normalcy and orderliness after quenching the fire and carrying out the decantation process.”

He urged road users to be patient and follow traffic diversions and re-routing measures put in place by TRACE, the police, the Ogun State Fire Service, FRSC, Amotekun, and the NSCDC.

“However, any inconveniences as a result of this unfortunate incident are highly regretted,” he added.

A devastating fire swept through the only market in Trademore Estate, Lugbe, Abuja in the early hours of Monday, leaving traders and residents grappling with significant losses.

The blaze, which reportedly started around 3:30 a.m., broke out shortly after the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company restored power.

Eyewitnesses suggest the inferno may have been triggered by an electrical fault, though the exact cause has yet to be officially determined.

Joe, a resident of the estate, described the scene as “tense and chaotic,” noting that the fire had already spread widely by the time he was alerted at 4:00 a.m.

Efforts by residents to contact emergency services were initially met with delays.

Firefighters from Dunamis Church were the first to respond at around 5:00 a.m., followed by teams from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Sauka Station.

It took two hours for emergency responders to bring the blaze under control, successfully preventing it from spreading further.

At the time of reporting, the extent of the damage and the value of goods lost remain unclear.

Authorities have not yet released an official statement on the incident.

written by Folarin Kehinde

A fuel tanker explosion at the Jigawa-Kano border on Tuesday, November 12, sparked panic as fire erupted along Maiduri Road, according to the Federal Fire Service (FFS) Jigawa Command.

Aliyu M. A., the FFS’s Public Relations Officer, confirmed the incident on Wednesday, revealing swift action by emergency responders.

At approximately 10:43 hours on November 12, 2024, we received a distress call from Kuho Village Head, Zubairu Ahmad, reporting a tanker accident at Tsaida, Kwanar Kalle, near Gamoji village,” Aliyu stated.

He added, “The FFS responded promptly, arriving at the scene by 10:50 hours. The fire was contained and brought under control.”

The incident follows a deadly tanker explosion in October that claimed over 170 lives in Majia, Taura Local Government Area. In that instance, a petrol-laden truck travelling from Kano to Nguru in Yobe State exploded, causing widespread casualties.

Though no casualties were reported in the latest fire, the recurrence of such incidents has raised public concerns over fuel transportation safety in Jigawa.
