FG Reverses Self, Lift Ban on International Basketball Competition

by Folarin Kehinde June 24, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The federal government has announced the reinstatement of Nigeria into international basketball following a letter of appeal dated June 17, 2022 from the Nigerian Basketball Federation.

The permanent secretary of the ministry of youth and sports development confirmed this information in a conference in Abuja on Thursday.

He said that intervention from concerned stakeholders, former Nigerian international basketball players and well meaning Nigerians helped trigger the decision.

He also disclosed that the Nigerian Basketball Federation (NBBF), had in the appeal agreed to resolve the issues which precipitated the withdrawal in the first place.

The NBBF crisis began in 2017 after two parallel elective Congress held in Kano and Abuja produced two boards, headed by Tijani Umar and Musa Kida.

This dispute meant domestic basketball in Nigeria was stalled while ligation that proceeded the Congress elections raged on.

The issue caused the world governing body for basketball to replace Nigeria’s female basketball team D’tigeress, with Mali for the FIBA women’s basketball world cup 2022 scheduled to hold in Sydney, Australia.
