Kano govt suspends doctors who left scissors in patient’s stomach

by Folarin Kehinde January 14, 2026
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Kano State Hospitals Management Board has admitted that the death of Aishatu Umar, a mother of five, was caused by medical negligence at the Abubakar Imam Urology Centre in Kano.

In a statement, its Public Relations Officer, Samira Suleiman, said preliminary investigation ordered by the Executive Secretary, Dr. Mansur Mudi Nagoda, confirmed that surgical scissors were left inside the patient’s body after a procedure.

The Board announced the immediate suspension of three personnel directly involved in the case from clinical duties.

It also referred the matter to the Kano State Medical Ethics Committee for further investigation and disciplinary measures in line with professional standards and the law.

“The Board extends its deepest condolences to the family of the late Aishatu Umar and sympathizes with them over this painful loss. We reassure the public that negligence will not be condoned in any form,” the statement read.

Daily Trust had earlier reported how Aishatu Umar died after doctors allegedly abandoned surgical scissors in her stomach following an operation at the government-owned Urology Centre in Kano.

Her husband, Abubakar Muhammad, narrated that his wife suffered severe complications after the surgery, which eventually led to her death despite repeated complaints to the hospital.

The incident sparked outrage among residents and raised concerns about poor oversight and accountability in public health facilities.

Many Nigerians also took to social media to demand justice for the deceased and reforms in the healthcare system.

FCT doctors begin 3-day strike

by Folarin Kehinde May 6, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Association of Resident Doctors in the Federal Capital Territory Administration (ARD-FCTA) has announced the commencement of a three-day warning strike, starting from Tuesday, May 6, 2025.

The doctors concluded to embark on the strike after their emergency congress meeting held on Monday in Abuja.

Briefing newsmen after the meeting, president of the association, Dr. George Ebong, said the strike became necessary as 127 health workers were sacked by the FCT Civil Service Commission last Friday without due diligence.

He described the sack as inhumane and illegal, demanding their immediate reinstatement and onward payment of their April salaries.

Also, he demanded the immediate resignation of the chairman of FCT-CSC, Mr. Emeka Ezeh.

Dr. Ebong, on behalf of the doctors, threatened that if their demands are not met by FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and the FCT Administration within three days, they would embark on an indefinite strike and shut down the nation’s capital hospitals.

We are embarking on a three-day warning strike because most of the members were disengaged from service on Friday without due diligence. They were labelled as ghost workers, ex-employees, and absconders when, in fact, these colleagues of ours are still in the system working even until now. We are livid that the FCTA service commission will carry out such an inhuman decision without talking to the health management board, permanent secretary of health, association of resident doctors, or Medical & Dental Consultant Association of Nigeria, MDCAN. It is not just doctors that are affected—nurses, pharmacists, and lab scientists, including non-clinical workers are affected too.

“The managing directors of these hospitals are not aware. In fact, three MDs are affected.

“127 health workers are affected. If these numbers are ghost workers, so how do these hospitals operate? The hospitals would have collapsed. What is the staff strength of FCT hospitals?

“The affected health workers salaries were stopped without any prior notice. The salaries for last month. This is a clear act of insensitivity and injustice to health workers.

“We demand immediate salary payment for all the affected health workers.

Brain Drain: Health Minister Begs Doctors To Stop Leaving Nigeria

by Folarin Kehinde August 24, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Minister of State for Health, Joseph Ekumankama has appealed to health professionals from leaving the country as he reiterated the Federal Governments assurance that measures are being deployed to address the brain drain in Nigeria.

Joseph spoke with reporters on Monday at the Federal Medical Centre, Ebute Meta, Lagos.

He inaugurated the Orthopedic and Trauma Centre, Molecular Building Complex, Oxygen gas plant, Clinical Training Centre, and Ultra-Modern Theatre.

Ekumankama admitted that the mass relocation of health personnel was a problem and was worrisome.

“The greatest challenge facing the sector presently is the doctors and nurses leaving the country”, NAN quoted him saying.”

The minister appealed to them to remain in Nigeria to see the efforts of the government.

“As a sacrifice, I encourage them to stay back and help us revitalize the health sector. We have witnessed that today with what is on ground in this hospital,” he said.

Ekumankama added that the government, in the last three years, released 100 percent of health budget.

The Guardian in 2021 reported that the major cause for the decline in the number of doctors in Nigeria is the migration of Nigerian doctors abroad. It is estimated that at least 2,000 medical doctors leave Nigeria yearly and no fewer than 5,407 Nigerian trained doctors are currently working with the British National Health Service in the United Kingdom,

The president of the Nigerian medical association, Dr. Francis Faduyile also noted that a high rate of insecurity, unemployment, low remuneration, bad roads, and poor healthcare system are some of the reasons why doctors are leaving the country in search of greener pastures. He noted that 75,000 Nigerian doctors were registered with the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA), but over 33,000 have left the country.
