We’re Not Building One-Party State — Tinubu Assures at APC Convention

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Friday dismissed concerns that Nigeria is drifting toward a one-party state, insisting that a vibrant opposition remains essential to democratic governance.

Speaking at the All Progressives Congress (APC) 4th Elective National Convention held at Eagle Square, Abuja, the President said the ruling party has no intention of stifling political plurality, even as it continues to consolidate its influence across the country.

Tinubu stated that while the APC is focused on strengthening its internal unity and expanding its political base, it recognises the critical role of opposition parties in shaping national discourse and improving governance outcomes.

“We do not seek a one-party state,” the President declared, noting that democracy thrives on competition of ideas and accountability.

His remarks come amid growing concerns in some quarters over the increasing dominance of the APC and the wave of defections from opposition parties into its fold.

The President, however, maintained that the party’s growing strength is a reflection of public confidence in its policies and leadership, not a deliberate attempt to weaken opposition voices.

Earlier in his address, Tinubu called for unity and discipline within the APC, warning that political parties often falter when personal ambition overrides collective interest.

He described the convention as a defining moment for both the party and Nigeria’s democracy, urging members to recommit to the founding ideals of the APC.

“Our greatest strength has never been in our numbers, but in our unity,” he said, stressing the need for cohesion as the party prepares for future political contests.

Tinubu also defended recent electoral reforms, stating that amendments to the Electoral Act followed due constitutional process, including legislative scrutiny and public engagement.

On governance, the President reiterated his administration’s commitment to the Renewed Hope Agenda, acknowledging that ongoing reforms may be difficult but are necessary to reposition the economy for sustainable growth.

He cited improvements in infrastructure, fiscal policy adjustments, and signs of increased investor confidence, adding that inflationary pressures are gradually easing.

Addressing challenges in the power sector, Tinubu revealed plans to establish a Grid Asset Management Company to tackle longstanding issues such as debt and ageing infrastructure, with the aim of improving electricity supply nationwide.

The President further urged greater inclusion of youths and women in politics, calling on the party to open more pathways for leadership and participation.

He appealed to delegates and party faithful to conduct themselves peacefully and with integrity throughout the convention, warning against actions that could undermine party cohesion.

“At the end of this convention, our party must emerge stronger and more united. We are one family, marching forward with discipline and purpose,” Tinubu said.

He also commended party leaders, governors, and members of the planning committee for the successful organisation of the convention, urging newly elected officials to serve with humility, vision, and a sense of responsibility.

The APC convention continues in Abuja with key party positions expected to shape the ruling party’s direction ahead of future elections.
