Life Sentence: South East Leaders Vow To Explore Political Solution For Nnamdi Kanu

by Nelson Ugwuagbo November 21, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Thursday sentenced the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, to life imprisonment after finding him guilty on all seven counts of terrorism preferred against him by the Federal Government.

In a swift reaction, South-East leaders vowed to pursue a political solution to secure his release and urged residents of the region to remain calm.

Speaking on behalf of Igbo leaders, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, said:

“All hope is not lost. A political solution is underway to secure Kanu release.”

In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Levinus Nwabughiogu, Kalu expressed optimism that Kanu could be freed through a political arrangement.

He voiced confidence that President Bola Tinubu would consider the appeals of prominent Igbo stakeholders on the issue, noting that the President would not be opposed to such an intervention.

Kalu further stressed that with the court process now concluded, the door had been opened for intensified political engagement.

“It is now time to explore political solutions that had been hindered because the matter was before the court. But now that the court has finished, it is time to intensify the request for the President’s intervention and we are sure that the President is not averse to it. We are going to get it. All hope is not lost. Our people should remain calm,” he said.

Terrorism Case: Nnamdi Kanu Faces Final Verdict Today

by Nelson Ugwuagbo November 20, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, is expected to know his fate today as the Federal High Court in Abuja delivers a crucial ruling in his long-running legal battle with the Federal Government.

Justice James Omotosho of the Federal High Court, Abuja, is expected to rule on a raft of applications filed by both Kanu and the Federal Government. Among them is a motion by the IPOB leader challenging the competence of the terrorism charges against him and seeking his release on the grounds of alleged unlawful detention and violation of his fundamental rights.

Kanu has been in the custody of the Department of State Services since June 2021, following his controversial interception and return to Nigeria from Kenya, which his lawyers describe as an “extraordinary rendition”.

He is standing trial on seven terrorism-related counts, including alleged incitement, running an unlawful organisation and actions said to threaten national security—allegations he has consistently denied.

Finland Court Jails Simon Ekpa for Six Years Over Terrorism Charges

written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

A District Court in Finland has sentenced Simon Ekpa, the self-proclaimed leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Government in Exile, to six years imprisonment for terrorism-related offenses.

Ekpa was arrested on November 21, 2024, by Finnish authorities following a probe by the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) into allegations that he used social media to incite terrorism and promote violence. His online activities were believed to have fueled unrest in Nigeria’s South-East region.

The Päijät-Häme District Court, after reviewing the charges, ruled that Ekpa’s actions amounted to “public incitement to commit a crime with terrorist intent.” The offenses were said to have occurred between August 2021 and November 2024.

During the investigation, Finnish authorities also froze Ekpa’s assets, along with those of his associates and affiliated companies.

Nnamdi Kanu Ordered Death on Tinubu, Wike – Prosecution Tells Court

by Nelson Ugwuagbo May 7, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

A prosecution witness in the ongoing trial of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), told the Federal High Court in Abuja on Wednesday that the separatist leader admitted to making broadcasts in which he called for violent attacks on key Nigerian leaders, including President Bola Tinubu and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Led in evidence by the prosecuting counsel, Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN), the second prosecution witness testified that Kanu, while giving his statement on July 17, 2021, confirmed making the broadcasts. The witness said Kanu offered a N100 million bounty for Wike’s head and called for the burning of Tinubu’s assets.

The court admitted into evidence seven recordings of Kanu’s broadcasts, which were stored on a flash drive and played openly in the courtroom.

In a broadcast dated December 12, 2020, Kanu described the Eastern Security Network (ESN) as a vigilante group, similar to the Amotekun Corps and Miyetti Allah. Toward the end of the recording, he urged followers to kill Wike, accusing the former Rivers State governor of placing a N50 million bounty on a Biafran.

“He does not deserve to live,” Kanu was heard saying, adding that any governor who presides over the killing of his people would face similar consequences.

Another broadcast played in court, dated October 20, 2020, during the End SARS protests, featured Kanu inciting violence in Lagos. He directed his followers to attack Tinubu, whom he described as a “traitor,” and to target police and other uniformed personnel.

“Tinubu’s hotel must be burnt down. Tinubu should not be allowed to escape,” he said in the recording.

In a separate recording, Kanu was heard placing a N100 million bounty on Wike, stating: “Dead or alive, Wike is N100 million. I will pay cash. Get me his head.”

by Leading Reporters November 21, 2024
written by Leading Reporters

Simon Ekpa, has been arrested in Finland along with four others on terror-related charges, The Finnish-Nigerian separatist and self-proclaimed leader of the Biafra Republic Government in Exile

It was gathered that the Finnish Central Criminal Police confirmed the arrests, citing allegations of incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent and financing terrorism.

The arrests, carried out earlier this week, led to the suspects being remanded by the district court of Päijät-Häme. Authorities allege that Ekpa, a Finnish citizen of Nigerian descent, used social media to incite violence in southeastern Nigeria, exacerbating tensions in the region.

Crime Commissioner Otto Hiltunen, leading the investigation, emphasized the cross-border nature of the case, highlighting international cooperation in uncovering the alleged activities.

Ekpa, known for his radical activism, has a history of controversy. In 2023, Finnish police briefly detained him for suspected fundraising fraud. Globally, he has gained notoriety for advocating election boycotts and publicly endorsing violence. In one of his widely shared statements, Ekpa said, “I support violence against Nigerian government forces. This is self-defense against war crimes committed against us.”

The arrests signal a critical development in addressing allegations of international terrorism and separatist militancy, with implications for security both in the South East particularly, in Nigeria and abroad.
