The man Wike: The many misconceptions and how he saved Southeast region from ravaging terrorist infiltration

by Folarin Kehinde December 29, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Barrister Nyesom Ezemuo Wike means many things to different people. Among Ndigbo, Wike is mostly seen as a villain or someone who denied their son Peter Gregory Obi the opportunity to be elected Nigerian President in 2022. Most Igbos hold the view that Wike is anti-Igbo. But is Wike anti-Igbo? Did he save the southeast region from what could have been a devastating infiltration by a ruthless invading terrorist group, disguised as herdsmen? The answer is capital and loudest YES. Hard to believe, you’d say!

It is hardly known in most quarters that Wike saved Southeast Nigeria from a devastating planned infiltration of that axis by a terrorist group, disguised as herdsmen. The personality of Wike reminds me that villains have their virtues too. He is no saint, but he is definitely not the demon many brand him.

Those who know Wike know he wears the face of a Lion; roars, and acts like one. He is a man who has defeated the pangs of fear. Some would even say Wike has many things in common with Donald Trump – Blunt, assertive, impetuous, stubborn and untamed when he sets out on a mission. He loves those he loves and would do everything to protect them. Wike’s assertiveness has earned him fewer friends and more enemies, perhaps. Within the political space, Wike could be said and rightly too to be the most misconstrued political figure in Nigeria today. Amid threats and opposition, the man Wike talks tough; hardly apologetic. He remains defiant.

As an Igbo man, I can say that Barr. Nyesom Wike deserves his flowers from the Igbos if only they knew the role he played during the infamous tenure of former President Muhammadu Buhari. Former President Muhammadu Buhari hated Wike for a reason. That reason was the fact that Wike was a huge hindrance to a mission that had been planned and sealed for execution. During President Muhammadu Buhari’s era, the invading killer-herdsmen have mapped out their infiltration strategy. The plan was to do whatever that could be done to hasten an unholy occupation of the Southeast and South-South Regions. South West was relatively safer, partly because the stakeholders of the region knew the plan and made adequate conventional and nonconventional arrangements to secure that region.

Furthermore, the emergence of President Muhammadu Buhari was made possible through the efforts of key political figures from South West, particularly President Ahmed Bola Tinubu. That largely guaranteed the Southwest safety.
Benue State was targeted as a feasible route for this infiltration. What did Wike do? Wike hurriedly formed a strong alliance with former Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom and the then Enugu State Governor Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi. This alliance was majorly to counter the planned infiltration cum occupation of the target regions (South East and South-South). A move that Samuel Ortom is still bearing the brunt to date.
Unlike Benue and Enugu States, Rivers State enjoyed better revenue inflow. Wike made available all the necessary resources that were needed in that subtle war of infiltration. Wike was the lone oak tree that defied the raging storm at that moment. Wike may be a villain, but his vision, political flexibility and behind-the-scenes activities are great political virtues that cannot be overlooked by any political pundit.

Ndigbo, need I say again, Wike deserves his flowers from us. Villains have their virtues too!

How SMEDAN awards multi-million naira contract to company linked to fraudulent L.G. Caretaker Chairman – Hon Tervershima Abraham Agber

written by Leading Reporters

The Small and Medium Enterprises Development Agency of Nigeria has awarded a multi-million Naira contract to Daho Global Resources Limited, a company co-owned by Hon. Tervershima Abraham Agber.

According to information uncovered by LeadingReporters, SMEDAN paid Daho Global Resources Limited N23,860,465.12 on March 30, 2024, via payment code 0222027001, to offer skill acquisition training in the Southeast Geopolitical zone, a project our investigation revealed was not carried out.

Recall that the erstwhile Caretaker Chairman of Gboko Local Government Area Council, Hon. Tervershima Abraham Agber was one of the three local government chairmen sacked by Benue State Governor, Governor Hyacinth Alia for non performance, misconduct, and mismanagement of council funds.

Other agencies and ministries that have continued to patronize Daho Global Resources Limited include, the Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security,  Federal Ministry of Environment and National Rural Electrification Agency.

A source in the know further revealed that most contracts awarded by SMEDAN violate Public Procurement Act and beneficiaries are usually friends, referrals from top government offices.

“Most monies moved from that agency take the form of sensitization programme”.  These monies end up in the personal pockets of some top management staff and friends of politicians. The source threatened to expose all the prevailing anomalies in the agency through an international press conference to be organized in conjunction with civil society organisations in no distant time.

Bonta Boys: A Growing Terror Group In Benue State

by Leading Reporters April 14, 2021
written by Leading Reporters

On April 9, news of the death of 11 soldiers, including their captain, broke on the internet. The attack was carried out by a group known as Bonta Boys. Over time, several attacks have been carried out by Bonta Boys.

What is now evolving into a terror group, started as a community youth-led response to regular land clashes in Benue State, North-central Nigeria.

The group originally hails from Bonta community in Konshisha Local Government Area of the state and sources confirmed to us that they are now in contact with other armed groups, hence the recent scaled-up attacks.

Bonta community shares a boundary with Ukpute community in Oju L.G.A. Although they are both homes to different ethnic groups, for years, both communities lived peacefully side-by-side but this is not the case anymore.

For over a year now, the two communities have been fighting over land. Ukpute indigenes have repeatedly accused Bonta residents of land encroachment.

The Bonta people have also been accused of attacking Ukpute people on their farmlands, beating their women, carting away their farm produce and kidnapping children on some occasions.

Things came to a head eight months ago when Ukpute community carried out a reprisal attack. Residents told HumAngle that the community was tired of constantly being attacked by Bonta Boys. Since then, it has been a series of attacks.

Is it more than a community crisis now?

We gathered that the Bonta youths had put a group together originally to quell the communal clashes but the group has grown to become more.

In the quest for victory, reports indicate that the group contracted bandit groups to obtain better weapons in fighting the Ukpute community.

Local sources told HumAngle that a combination of youths from the Bonta community and the bandits is what is now referred to as Bonta Boys. They noted that the group has now been hijacked by armed groups fighting for different motives and have taken to attacking security operatives.

Multiple reports also allege that they are involved in killing-for-cash.

With the recent increase in banditry in the country, residents fear that a likely future attack is imminent, especially with the bold attack on the Nigerian military that led to the death of about 11 soldiers.

The backstory of the recent military attack by Bonta Boys

There have been incessant cases of communal clashes between the people of Konshisha and Oju L.G.A. over boundary demarcation. As part of efforts to resolve the crisis, the Benue state government held a series of meetings with stakeholders from both local governments with a view to arriving at an amicable solution to the problem.

Considerable progress had been made and a final date fixed for all stakeholders to meet in the disputed areas to fully demarcate the boundary so that peace could reign.

Trouble however started on the eve of the final meeting during the Easter holiday when Bonta Boys reportedly invaded Ukpute community while they were worshipping in church. The armed group killed women and children, destroyed houses, yam barns, markets; and burnt down shops. The survivors of the attack ran for their lives, leaving the community desolate.

In a statement detailing the attack on the military officers, Brigadier-General Onyema Nwachukwu, Acting Director Defence Information said, “72 Special Forces Battalion deployed troops deployed on the Oju side of the boundary and troops of the Battalion were on their way to replenish their colleagues on April 5 when they were attacked by armed bandits at Bonta in Konshisha L.G.A.”

The troops, under command of a Captain, were seized at a checkpoint mounted by Bonta Boys and taken into Konshisha forest where they were all brutally murdered. Not satisfied with killing the soldiers, the bandits proceeded to burn all the eleven soldiers and their captain beyond recognition while their weapons and ammunition were carted away.

Military reinforcements were dispatched to Bonta the following morning. Unfortunately, the reinforcement also came under attack from close to 500 armed people who had occupied Bonta.

Nwachukwu added that the sheer number of youths involved in the attacks suggest that the armed groups cannot be from Bonta alone, but were joined by armed groups from other parts of Konshisha L.G.A.

Benue Governor Ortom tests positive For Covid-19

by Folarin Kehinde January 27, 2021
written by Folarin Kehinde

According to his Chief Press Secretary, Terver Akase, this followed the test results of most of the Governor’s close aides who also returned positive in the last few weeks.

Though, the Governor has not shown any symptoms of the disease, he has already commenced treatment as prescribed by medical personnel.

He advised those who have come in contact with him in the last couple of days to go for test.

The Governor said it is equally important that those who came in contact with other persons who have tested positive for the virus, should go for test, to ascertain their COVID-19 status.

Ortom urged Benue people to continue to observe the protocol for the prevention of the virus, such as wearing of face masks, use of sanitizers, regular hand washing and physical distancing.

He encouraged the people not to be afraid of going for COVID-19 test, as only doing so would help in containing the spread of the disease.
