by Folarin Kehinde February 11, 2026
written by Folarin Kehinde

It was panic galore on Wednesday morning among passengers of an Arik Air flight from Lagos to Port Harcourt when the aircraft was diverted after developing an engine issue mid-flight.

The airline confirmed that its Boeing 737-700 aircraft, registered 5N-MJF, operating Flight W3 740, was descending into Port Harcourt International Airport, Omagwa, when the flight crew heard a loud bang from the left engine.

Arik Air in an update confirmed that all 80 passengers and crew members on board disembarked safely, with no injuries reported.

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) confirmed that an Arik Air Boeing 737-7GL aircraft, registration 5N-MJF, operating a scheduled domestic flight from Lagos (LOS) to Port Harcourt (PHC) earlier today, experienced an in-flight engine anomaly and diverted safely to Benin Airport (BNI).

The Director, Public Affairs and Family Assistance,Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau, Bimbo Olawumi Oladeji, in a press statement on Wednesday said during the cruise phase of flight, the crew detected abnormal indications on one of the engines.

She explained that in accordance with established safety procedures, the flight crew conducted a precautionary engine shutdown and diverted to the nearest suitable airport, Benin.

She said the aircraft landed without incident, and all passengers and crew disembarked normally. No injuries have been reported.

She also assured that preliminary observations at the diversion airport indicate significant damage to the affected engine based on initial visual assessment.

“In line with its statutory mandate and in accordance with international standards under ICAO Annex 13 and applicable Nigerian civil aviation regulations, the NSIB has commenced an investigation into the occurrence.

“A preliminary assessment team is en route to Benin to secure the aircraft, document evidence, interview relevant personnel and witnesses, and recover flight data and cockpit voice recorder information.

“The NSIB is working closely with the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Arik Air, and other relevant stakeholders to determine the sequence of events and any contributing factors.

“A Preliminary Report will be issued within 30 days in accordance with ICAO Annex 13 provisions.

“A Final Report will be published at the conclusion of the investigation.The safety of passengers, crew, and the public remains our highest priority.

“The NSIB encourages any member of the public with relevant information regarding this occurrence to contact the Bureau through its official channels,” she said.

BREAKING: CNG-Powered Vehicles Explodes in Benin

by Folarin Kehinde October 17, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

A Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) powered vehicle exploded in Benin City, Edo State at the NIPCO filling station located at Ikpoba Hill, along the Benin-Auchi expressway, on Wednesday, injuring many people.

A viral video circulating on social media shows the vehicle scattered.

According to reports, three persons sustained various degrees of injuries and were rushed to a private hospital for medical attention.

This incident has raised serious concerns about the safety of converting petrol-powered vehicles to CNG, a move advocated by the Nigerian government.

The Presidential CNG Initiative (PCNGI), an arm of the government saddled with advocating for the conversion of petrol-run vehicles to CNG has responded to the incident.

The initiate expressed condolences to the victims, revealing that the vehicle involved in the explosion was illegally modified,

The statement reads, “The PCNGI commiserate with those injured in this avoidable incident, and thankful that no lives were lost.

“The PCNGI also note that safe handling of all hydrocarbon is critical to their safe use. A close examination of the cylinder in question in Benin City shows it was welded and modified and not an approved for use for CNG.

“The police, regulatory authorities and management of NIPCO are undertaking a painstaking investigation of the incident and we are coordinating with them.

“This incident reiterates the impetus of the PCNGI and our partners on the soon to be launched Nigeria Gas Vehicle Monitoring System at SON, NMDPRA, NADDC and FRSC to tackle any bad actors in the ecosystem that seeks to make this safer, cheaper, cleaner and more reliable source of fueling risky for all.

“We also call on all stakeholders to cooperate with the new system of regulation and ensure full compliance.

“Only accredited conversion centers must be patronized and safe handling of CNG just like petrol ensures safety of all.”

Royal Family Suspends Oba Of Benin’s Uncle, Akenzua For Challenging Traditional Institution

by Folarin Kehinde May 28, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Akenzua is one of the suspended enigie (duke) who took the Oba of Benin to court challenging their suspension as enigie in the Benin kingdom.

The Oba of Benin Royal Family has announced the suspension of embattled Professor Gregory Akenzua, for alleged disrespect to the royal stool.

Members of the Royal Family including descendants of Oba Ovonramwen, Oba Eweka, Oba Akenzua II, Oba Erediauwa and others, during a press conference on Monday, said Akenzua against all entreaties challenged the Benin traditional institution through his acts that are utterly at variance with the customs and tradition of the Benin people, and the core values of the Benin Royal Family.

Akenzua is one of the suspended enigie (duke) who took the Oba of Benin to court challenging their suspension as enigie in the Benin kingdom.

Akenzua, Edomwonyi Ogiegbaen and other dukes had approached the court to quash their suspension by the Oba Ewuare II, saying that only the state government has the power to suspend them.

Akenzua, a professor of Gynecology, a former Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin and former chairman Governing Council of the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, is a younger brother to Oba Erediauwa, the father of Oba Ewuare II.

The press statement read on behalf of the royal family by Prince George Eweka said, “Professor Gregory Idurobo Akenzua, has betrayed the core values of respect for the Benin customs and tradition; devotion and submission to the customary hierarchy of the Benin Kingdom; and respect for customary arbitration process. Instead, he has chosen the path of rebellion.

“For the avoidance of doubt, the Royal Family wishes to emphasize that His Royal Majesty, the Oba of Benin occupies a unique position as the father of every member of the Benin Royal Family irrespective of age. Hence the Royal family does not have an Okaegbe (the oldest man in the family).

“The Royal Family also notes that in utter violation of the hierarchy of succession to the Odion-Egbe position of the Benin Royal Family, Professor Gregory Idurobo Akenzua has been parading himself as the Odion-Egbe of the Royal Family, and has held meetings to assert himself as such when he knows that he is not rightfully entitled to the position being far lower in the hierarchy of seniority in the Benin Royal Family;

He continued, “The Benin Royal Family has given ample opportunities to Prof.Gregory Idurobo Akenzua to retrace his steps and return to the path of honour and dignity.

“Prof. Gregory Idurobo Akenzua has snubbed and rejected the opportunities provided by the Royal Family for him to retrace his wrongful steps.

“After a careful review of the facts, the Benin Royal Family has decided as follows:

“Professor Gregory Idurobo Akenzua is hereby suspended from the Benin Royal Family for his acts of rebellion against the Benin Traditional Institution;

“Professor Gregory Idurobo Akenzua is no longer to participate in any activity connected with the Benin Royal Family;

“All members of the Benin Royal Family are strongly directed not to relate, associate, or engage with Professor Gregory Idurobo Akenzua for as long as he remains suspended from the Benin Royal Family.”
