University union to begin strike thursday over unpaid salary arrears

by Folarin Kehinde July 2, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) and Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) have threatened to ground activities on campuses nationwide from Thursday except the federal government pays the withheld salary arrears of their members.

SSANU said this in a communique at the end of its 48 regular National Executive Council meeting at the University of Benin and signed by its President, Comrade Mohammed Ibrahim.

On June 20, 2024, the university workers, through a letter addressed to the Minister of Education, Professor Tahir Mamman, gave the government a two-week ultimatum to pay the salary arrears.

In the letter jointly signed by NASU General Secretary, Prince Peters Adeyemi and Ibrahim, the unions accused the government of neglect and insincerity.

SSANU, in its communique on Tuesday in Abuja, said despite all promises by the Ministers of Education and Labour, including the House of Representatives to pay the arrears, the federal government has continued to “dribble SSANU, even after the mutual agreement to suspend the one-week warning strike in March this year.”

Minister of State for Education, Dr Tanko Sununu promised to respond to the report when he was contacted.

“NEC in session once again expresses utmost dismay at the unprecedented level of Government’s insensitivity and deliberate resolve to cause chaos in the university system by adopting the divide and rule policy to set unions on a collision course through preferential treatment of one union over others.

Recall that SSANU and other unions were compelled by the government to embark on strike in 2022 over the government’s refusal to honour a collective Bargaining Agreement willingly signed by all parties. At the end of the strike, the then Buhari Government further signed an elaborate agreement among which was the non victimisation clause.

“However, the government made a selective payment of the withheld salaries. While we do not begrudge the payment made to our colleagues, we expected the same gesture to be extended to SSANU and NASU which legally complied with all procedures before embarking on the Industrial action. Despite all promises and media hypes by the Ministers of Education and Labour, including the House of Representatives to pay these arrears, the government has continued to dribble SSANU, even after the mutual agreement to suspend the one-week warning strike in March this year.

BREAKING: ASUU joins organized labour’s nationwide strike

by Folarin Kehinde June 3, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has joined the ongoing strike embarked up from Monday, by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, and Trade Union Congress, TUC.

Organized labour have begun the industrial action, after the federal government’s failure to meet the unions’ minimum wage demand.

In a statement addressed to the branch chairpersons and zonal coordinators of ASUU President, Emmanuel Osodeke, has directed lecturers in universities across the country to join the strike as an affiliate of the congress.

“The NLC has declared an indefinite strike action beginning from Monday, June 3, 2024, as a result of the failure of the government to conclude the renegotiation of minimum wage for Nigerian workers and reversal of hike in electricity tariff.

“Our branches are hereby enjoined to join in the strike action as an affiliate member of Congress.

“Consequently, branch chairpersons are to mobilise all members to participate in the strike action. Yours in the struggle,” it read.

BREAKING: ASUU threatens nationwide strike

by Folarin Kehinde May 14, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Academic Staff Union of Universities has threatened a nationwide strike.

The union decried the failure of the Federal Government to appoint Governing Councils for Federal Universities.

The union also faulted what it described as the nonchalant attitude of the President Bola Tinubu-led Federal Government to matters pertaining to academics in Nigerian Federal Universities.

The body of academics, during an ongoing press briefing at the University of Abuja, also faulted the 35 per cent salary increment for professors and the 25 per cent salary increment for other academics in the university system.

The body said it saw the increment as a wage award that could be withdrawn by the government anytime it deems fit.

Speaking during the ongoing briefing, the President of the union, Prof. Emmanuel Osodeke noted that it has given the Tinubu-led government enough time to set things in motion.

Osodeke noted that the union was also concerned over the failure of the Federal Government to appoint members of Governing Councils for Federal owned universities.

Osodeke also noted that the dissolution of the governing councils was illegal as it was against the principles guiding the existing universities.

The PUNCH reports the National Universities Commission had, on June 22, 2023, announced the dissolution of governing councils of all federal universities and boards of other agencies and parastatals in the country.

The NUC directive was based on a similar one three days earlier by President Bola Tinubu ordering the dissolution of the boards of all government parastatals, agencies and companies.

ASUU Strike: NLC Embarks on Nationwide Protest

by Folarin Kehinde July 26, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has made true of its promise to carry out a nationwide protest the ongoing ASUU strike on the 26th and 27th of July.

Major roads in Lagos, Ibadan, Jos and other Cities across the country has been blocked as both members of NLC, ASUU and NANS engage in their planned protest.

The union had announced last week Sunday that it would on the 26th and 27th of July, carry out a nationwide strike to compel the federal government to resolve the five-month-old Asuu strike that has kept public university students at home.

The government, through Minister of Information Lai Mohammed had deemed the protest illegal, stating that there was no need for the planned protest since the government does not have any dispute with members of the NLC.

However, Nation President of NLC Ayuba Wabba in a statement said there was no going back on the planned protest

Wabba, who was reacting to an earlier warning against the strike by Information and Culture Minister Lai Mohammed said it was in consonance with democratic norms and rule of law.

Mohammed had on Wednesday said the NLC had no reason to embark on the protest as the Federal Government had no dispute with its members. He declared the protest as illegal.

The NLC, in a statement, said:” It’s elementary knowledge that the right to peaceful assembly and protest is a fundamental global right guaranteed by the UN Charter on Human and Peoples right and the constitution of the federal republic of Nigeria. All peaceful assemblies are lawful and do not require any permission under our laws. In a democratic society, such a statement is not consistent with the rule of law.

Details coming in from the Lagos chapter of the NLC says that it has given the federal government a two-week ultimatum to resolve the ongoing strike.

Speaking at the protest in Ikeja, Lagos NLC chairperson, Mrs Agnes Sessy urged the federal government to act within the two weeks ultimatum or risk another #ENDSARS type of protest.

Members of the National Union of Electricity Employees have also threatened nationwide blackout as they plan to join the NLC in solidarity protest with ongoing strike by ASUU.

ASUU: Union Threatens To Revoke NITDA Leader Certificate Over UTAS Failure

by Leading Reporters April 1, 2022
written by Leading Reporters

The Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has threatened to begin the process of revoking the degree certificate of the Director-General of the National Information Technology Development Agency, Kashifu Inuwa.

In a tweet by the union, it revealed that the revoking was a result of the failure of the University Transparency and Accountability Solution in the tests carried out on the proposed payment platform by the NITDA leader.

Inuwa had on March 9, 2022, claimed that UTAS failed the “integrity test, vulnerability test (security integrity), User Acceptance Test (UAT) and stress load test, as well as the hardware requirements” as directed by the Minister of Communication, Isa Pantami after the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting.

ASUU has in fact called the claim of the NITDA boss an “unguarded statement”.

UTAS is the payment platform proposed by ASUU to replace the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS).
