BREAKING: Tinubu approves posting of Ambassadors to U.S., UK, others

written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Tinubu has approved the posting of four ambassador-designates, out of the 68 confirmed by the Senate last December.

Tinubu confirmed the postings of Ambassador Ayodele Oke as the ambassador-designate to France, and Colonel Lateef Are as the ambassador-designate to the United States of America.

Also confirmed by the President is the posting of Ambassador Amin Dalhatu, former ambassador to South Korea, as the high commissioner-designate to the United Kingdom.

Usman Isa Dakingari Suleiman, former governor of Kebbi, is the ambassador-designate to Turkey, where the President is scheduled to begin a state visit next week.

In a memo to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, President Tinubu urged the ministry to notify the governments of the four countries about the ambassador-designates, in accordance with diplomatic procedures.

Ambassadorial List: “I can’t just appoint anybody” – Tinubu

by Folarin Kehinde September 3, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Tinubu has revealed the difficulty and delay in appointing Nigerian ambassadors.

Tinubu said he can’t appoint just anybody, hence the difficulty in releasing the list.

Stressing that he still has some ambassadorial slots, Tinubu appreciated Nigerians for their patience.

In a video, the president said he needs to cure the state economy and bring hope to Nigerians before unveiling his ambassadors.

“I couldn’t appoint everybody that I could have appointed, thank you for your patience till now. I still have some slots for ambassadorial positions that too many people are craving for, but it’s not easy stitching together those names.

“First of all, cure the economy, bring hope to the people as that is what we stop for and that hope is here, thank you for believing in me,” he said.

The last set of Nigerian ambassadors were appointed during the past administration of the late former President Muhammadu Buhari.

Since Tinubu assumed office on May 29, 2023, he is yet to appoint ambassadors despite mounting pressure from Nigerians.

Pope Francis appoints new ambassador to Nigeria

by Folarin Kehinde July 17, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Head of the Catholic Church, Pope Francis, has appointed the Most Reverend Michael F. Crotty, as the new Apostolic Nuncio (ambassador) to Nigeria.

An apostolic nuncio, also known as a papal nuncio, is an ecclesiastical diplomat, serving as an envoy or a permanent diplomatic representative of the Holy See to a state or to an international organization.

This was contained in a communiqué issued on Tuesday, July 16, by the Apostolic Nunciature (Embassy of the Holy See) to Nigeria and endorsed by Lucius Iwejuru Ugorji, Archbishop of Owerri and President of the Catholic Bishops Conference of Nigeria (CBCN).

Speaking on the appointment, Archbishop Ugorji appreciated Pope Francis for appointing Archbishop Crotty as the Apostolic Nuncio to Nigeria to build on the good works of his predecessor, Archbishop Antonio Filipazzi.

“We also celebrate the historic connection between our nations, as Archbishop Crotty becomes our first Apostolic Nuncio from Ireland, just as Archbishop Jude Thaddeus Okolo, who served as the first Apostolic Nuncio from Nigeria in Ireland.

“We appreciate Archbishop Crotty’s acceptance of serving in Nigeria and assure him of our full support and cooperation,” Ugorji said.

Archbishop Crotty, a native of Mitchelstown, Cork, Ireland, was born on March 26, 1970 and on July 3, 1994 ordained a priest for the Diocese of Cloyne (Ireland).

French Ambassador Spices Up Farewell, Says Au Revoir to Nigerian Pepper Soup

by Nelson Ugwuagbo January 13, 2024
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

As the tenure of Ms. Emmanuelle Blatmann, the outgoing Ambassador of France to Nigeria, comes to an end, she bids a fond and light-hearted farewell to one peculiar aspect of Nigerian cuisine – the renowned pepper soup.

During a cheerful conversation with journalists before her departure, Ambassador Blatmann openly shared her sentiments about the Nigerian delicacy. While expressing her genuine affection for Nigeria’s weather, people, music, and diverse culinary offerings, she humorously mentioned that pepper soup wouldn’t be missed.

“I must be honest and straightforward – I won’t miss the pepper soup because it’s just too peppery. You all have tried to test my limits several times,” she playfully remarked.

With a smile, Ambassador Blatmann continued, “I would find myself eating various dishes with tears in my eyes, feeling like smoke is coming out of my ears. Of course, I’m exaggerating, but seriously, why is there so much pepper?”

Despite her playful banter about the spiciness of pepper soup, Ambassador Blatmann expressed her deep appreciation for the rich cultural heritage and culinary diversity of Nigeria. She emphasized that her time in Nigeria has been a remarkable experience, filled with warmth, hospitality, and unforgettable memories.

As she prepares to take on her new role as the director for Africa in Paris, Ambassador Blatmann looks forward to exploring a wide range of culinary delights from different African countries, while bidding adieu to the fiery flavors of Nigerian pepper soup.

Her departure marks the end of a successful tenure as the French Ambassador to Nigeria, during which she actively fostered bilateral relations and strengthened cultural ties between the two nations.

Nigeria, known for its vibrant cuisine and diverse flavors, will undoubtedly continue to captivate the taste buds of visitors and residents alike, with or without the presence of pepper soup on Ambassador Blatmann’s plate.
