Tinubu rejects bill to establish university of education in Adamawa

by Folarin Kehinde February 4, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has declined assent to a bill for the establishment of Federal University of Education, Numan, Adamawa State.

He conveyed the decision in a letter addressed to the Speaker, House of Representatives, Abbas Tajuddeen, read by his Deputy, Benjamin Kalu, who presided over the plenary on Tuesday.

President Tinubu, while explaining his reasons for declining assent to the bill, stated, among others, that, Section 22 of the bill accords the authority on the disposal of land to the governor and not the President as it ought to be by law in respect of land belonging to a Federal Government entity in the case of universities.

Kalu added that President Tinubu also said in the letter that, the proposal on the Award of Degree by the proposed institution was omitted in Section 25(b).

The House had passed a Bill for the Establishment of Federal University of Education Numan in Adamawa State last year and forwarded it to the President for Assent.

Blaze Destroys 6 Shops in Adamawa, Prompting Local Response

by Nelson Ugwuagbo January 11, 2024
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

A fire gutted IFY, a popular shopping mall in Numan Local Government Area of Adamawa State, along with five other shops in an early morning blaze on Thursday.

The five other shops included a provision store, a bookshop, and a wine depot that supplies the Southern zone of the state, comprising nine local government areas: Mayo-Belwa, Jada, Ganye, Toungo, Shelleng, Guyuk, Demsa, Lamurder, and Numan.

Innocent Ayah, one of the victims, expressed the devastating loss, stating that he lost everything to the fire.

“I was awakened by the security personnel manning the shop around 2 a.m. that the shop was on fire,” Ayah lamented.

Chinezi Osuji, the owner of the bookshop, estimated her losses at over N70 million, including books and teaching materials, with nothing recovered from the fire.

The victims are now seeking government assistance to recover and rebuild their businesses.

During a sympathy visit to the victims, the state Deputy Governor, Professor Kaletapwa, described the incident as a significant loss to Numan and the entire zone. She urged the victims to find solace in God, as the cause of the fire is yet to be determined.

Mr. Christopher Sofore, Chairman of Numan LGA, stated that the magnitude of the inferno is still under investigation.

BREAKING: INEC Postpones Collation Of Adamawa Governorship Election

by Folarin Kehinde April 18, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has postponed the collation of the Adamawa state governorship election till further notice.

The commission announced this after an emergency meeting with its National Commissioners on Tuesday

This followed the controversial declaration of Aishatu Dahiru (Binani) as Adamawa State governor-elect while the collation of results was still ongoing by the state’s Resident Electoral Commissioner, Hudu Yunusa Ari.

Subsequently, the commission suspended the collation and summoned the REC to Abuja for questioning.

The REC was eventually suspended from office and warned to steer clear of the Adamawa State INEC office.

The commission in its emergency meeting on Tuesday also resolved to write the Inspector General of Police for the immediate investigation and prosecution of the controversial REC.

It also resolved to request the Secretary General of the Federation to take further action on Ari.

“At its meeting today, 18th April 2023, the Commission discussed matters arising from the Adamawa Governorship election and decided to:

“Write to the Inspector-General of Police for the immediate investigation and possible prosecution of the Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC) for Adamawa State, Barr. Hudu Yunusa Ari.

“Request the Secretary to the Government of the Federation to draw the attention of the appointing authority to the unwholesome behaviour of the REC for further action.

“The collation process shall resume at a time to be determined by the Returning Officer,” the statement read.

Adamawa APC,PDP Members Decamp To Labour Party

by Folarin Kehinde August 2, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The northern structure of Labour Party’s presidential candidate Peter Obi has started to take shape as members of the All Progressives Congress and Peoples Democratic Party in Adamawa State both dump their respective parties to join the Labour party.

The individuals who were in their hundreds across both gender and age burnt their APC and PDP membership cards as they announced their defection.

In their acceptance speech into the Labour party, they spoke in Hausa where they complained about the sufferings and hardship that both the administration of the APC and PDP had brought upon Nigerians. They decried the security situation in the north, prevalent illiteracy, acute poverty among other issues plaguing the country.

They therefore said that 2023 was a crucial time to keep aside ethnic sentiments and vote for a candidate who has a proven track record of good governance. That candidate being Peter Obi.

The decamperes urged northern citizens to vote for Peter Obi as he is a credible, trusted and verified candidate.
