INEC Caps Campaign Spending for Presidential, Governorship Candidates at N571bn

by Nelson Ugwuagbo August 20, 2026
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, has capped campaign spending for presidential and governorship candidates at a combined N571 billion ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The figure comprises a N10 billion spending limit for each presidential candidate and N3 billion for each governorship candidate, in line with Section 92 of the new Electoral Act.

With 19 presidential candidates in the race, the total spending ceiling for the presidential election stands at N190 billion.

Similarly, the 127 governorship candidates contesting across 28 states have a combined spending limit of N381 billion.

The combined N571 billion represents the maximum amount candidates are legally permitted to spend on their campaigns and does not indicate funds guaranteed to or actually received by the candidates.

The development follows INEC’s publication of the personal particulars and credentials of the 19 presidential candidates and their running mates ahead of the 2027 election.

The publication has also paved the way for the commencement of the presidential campaign, which began on Wednesday, August 19, 2026.
