IGP Deploys Police Special Force Nationwide Ahead of NLC Planned Protest

by Nelson Ugwuagbo December 17, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Ahead of today’s planned nationwide protests organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the inspector general of police, Kayode Egbetokun ohas deployed special forces and tactical teams across the country to ensure a peaceful demonstration.

State police commands, in separate interviews on Tuesday, confirmed their preparedness to prevent violence and curb the activities of miscreants and alleged political hirelings who may attempt to disrupt the rallies.

The NLC had earlier insisted that it would proceed with the nationwide protests, which were called to draw attention to worsening insecurity and other unresolved labour-related issues.

Speaking on the level of mobilisation, the NLC spokesperson, Benson Upah, confirmed that affiliate unions have been mobilised nationwide. “We are going on with the protest across the country,” he said.

Upah further warned that any attempt to obstruct the National Day of Protest and Mourning could trigger a nationwide indefinite strike.

FRSC to Prosecute TikTok Influencer Peller Over Reckless Driving Incident

by Nelson Ugwuagbo December 15, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced plans to prosecute popular TikTok influencer Habeeb Hamzat, widely known as Peller, over a road traffic crash linked to reckless driving.

The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, raised concerns over what he described as a growing trend of dangerous road behaviour among celebrities, social media influencers and content creators, warning that such actions pose serious risks to public safety and undermine national road safety efforts.

The development follows the circulation of a video on social media showing Peller live-streaming while driving, an act the FRSC said reportedly resulted in a traffic accident.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by the FRSC spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide, Mohammed condemned the conduct as unlawful and hazardous, noting that it could have led to severe injuries or loss of life.

According to the Corps Marshal, the incident “serves as a grim reminder that fame does not confer immunity from the law, nor does it excuse dangerous behaviour on public roads.”

He stressed that live streaming, content creation, recording, or any activity that distracts a driver while driving constitutes a direct violation of established traffic regulations and endangers not only the driver but other road users.

Mohammed further stated that such actions undermine ongoing national efforts to reduce road traffic crashes and fatalities.

Consequently, he directed the Lagos State Sector Commander of the FRSC to commence prosecution proceedings against the individual involved for reckless driving, use of a mobile phone while driving, and distracted driving, in line with existing traffic laws.

Opposition Coalition Accuses Tinubu Government of Politicising EFCC Ahead of 2027

by Nelson Ugwuagbo December 15, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

A coalition of opposition leaders has accused the Federal Government led by President Bola Tinubu of using the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as a political instrument to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general election.

The opposition leaders said the alleged selective application of anti-corruption laws by the EFCC and other security agencies undermines the credibility of the anti-graft campaign and erodes public confidence in state institutions.

The allegation was contained in a joint statement endorsed by the Interim National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), David Mark; former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; Lawal Batagarawa; Bode George; Peter Obi; and former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), John Odigie-Oyegun.

Titled “The Weaponisation of the EFCC,” the statement accused the anti-graft agency of persistently targeting opposition figures for political advantage in favour of the ruling APC.

According to the opposition leaders, the trend reflects a past remark by former APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, who once suggested that defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would have their past “sins” forgiven upon joining the APC.

They said the comment, whether made casually or deliberately, has reinforced a troubling perception that allegations against members of the ruling party are often ignored, while opposition figures are aggressively investigated and subjected to intense media scrutiny without proven evidence.

The coalition called for the immediate removal of political interference from the EFCC’s operations, stressing that the agency must function independently and professionally.

“The EFCC must be insulated from partisan control and must not function at the behest of any president, political party, or faction,” the statement said.

The opposition leaders further urged the Federal Government to restore the EFCC to its original legal mandate, insisting that its responsibilities do not include selective prosecution or the harassment of political opponents.

written by Folarin Kehinde

There was panic in Yenagoa on Thursday after the Bayelsa Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, suddenly slumped in his office and was taken to the Federal Medical Centre, FMC, Yenagoa, for urgent medical attention.

The incident happened in the early afternoon while he was attending to official matters.

Staff members around him were said to have raised immediate alarm as he went down, forcing a rapid medical response from security aides and government officials who were present within the complex.

Hospital sources confirmed that he was quickly moved into the emergency section on arrival.

Medical personnel were seen working swiftly to stabilize him before transferring him to the Intensive Care Unit for closer monitoring.

His condition was described as stable, though doctors are keeping a close watch.

At the moment, there is still no official clarification on what triggered the sudden collapse.

However, some insiders hinted that the episode may be linked to a possible cardiac-related issue.

A senior government source familiar with his schedule remarked that, “He’s a workaholic; he should find time to rest,” stressing that the deputy governor rarely slows down from state duties.

Security around the Federal Medical Centre tightened immediately after his arrival. Officers restricted movement in and out of the facility as top Bayelsa government figures trooped in to check on him.

Attempts to reach his media aide, Mr. Doubara Atasi, for comments were not successful as of press time.

At least eight students of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) were killed in the early hours of Thursday, December 11, 2025, when a trailer lost control and collided with a bus conveying them along Zaria Road in the Jos metropolis, Plateau State.

Eyewitnesses said the students died instantly alongside the bus driver. Two other students who survived the crash were rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.

The victims were returning from a night outing around 2 a.m. in two hired buses when tragedy occurred. Near the Zaria Road Stadium area, a speeding trailer, suspected to have suffered brake failure, veered off course and rammed into one of the buses.

The force of the impact caused the driver to lose control, sending the bus crashing into an electric pole just before the Farin Gada bridge.

Authorities were yet to issue an official statement at the time of filing this report, while rescue operations and investigations into the incident continued.

ECOWAS Appoints Aliko Dangote as Inaugural Chairman of Regional Business Council

by Nelson Ugwuagbo December 11, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has appointed Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Chairman of the Dangote Group, as the pioneer Chairman of the ECOWAS Business Council (EBC).

ECOWAS President, Dr. Omar Touray, announced the appointment on Wednesday during the 95th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers in Abuja.

The EBC, an independent platform established by ECOWAS, is designed to strengthen the role of the private sector, stimulate sub-regional trade, attract investment, and enhance economic integration across West Africa. It is expected to serve as a bridge between the private sector and policymakers within the sub-region.

Touray explained that Dangote’s selection was informed by his extensive business expertise and the significant economic footprint of his enterprises, not only within the ECOWAS region but across the African continent.

He noted that momentum for intra-regional investment was increasing, citing recent economic forums such as the Forum Senegal Invest, the West African Economic Summit in Nigeria, and the “Invest in District Savanes” forum in Côte d’Ivoire.

“This growing appetite for intra-regional investment highlights the need to mobilise capital within our region to build our community, rather than relying on unstable foreign investments,” Touray said.

He added that with the scale of investments by business leaders such as Dangote, the region’s private sector could drive West Africa’s development if provided with the right incentives and opportunities.

Through the EBC, ECOWAS aims to convene private sector stakeholders to deliberate on economic integration and regional development, while facilitating stronger partnerships among private enterprises, government agencies, and ECOWAS institutions.

JUST IN: EFCC Arrests Former Minister Chris Ngige in Abuja

by Folarin Kehinde December 11, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Operatives of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) have taken former Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, into custody in Abuja.

The development emerged late Wednesday, creating fresh discussions around the former Anambra governor’s recent activities and public engagements.

According to information confirmed by close associates, EFCC officials arrived at Ngige’s Abuja residence on Wednesday evening and escorted him away for questioning.

Details surrounding the arrest remain sketchy, but sources familiar with the situation disclosed that the commission is probing issues linked to his time in public office.

Officials have yet to issue a formal statement on the reason for his detention.

The incident comes barely weeks after a disturbing attack on Ngige’s convoy in Anambra State.

That attack left two people injured, including a police orderly, while a passer-by lost his life. Ngige, however, was not in the convoy when the ambush occurred, raising questions about the motive behind the assault.

Security agencies in the state later said investigations were ongoing to track those responsible.

Earlier today, confusion spread across social media with claims that Ngige had been abducted from his home.

Those rumours prompted anxiety among supporters and residents familiar with his political history.

But the speculation was later addressed by Fred Chukwuelobe, Ngige’s former media aide during his tenure as governor.

In his words, “Ngige is with the EFCC. Former Governor of Anambra State and immediate past Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr Chris Ngige, is with the EFCC.”

His short clarification helped dispel the abduction rumours and confirmed that the arrest was an operational move by the commission.

As of the time of this report, the EFCC has not provided additional information regarding the nature of the investigation or how long the former minister will remain in custody.

More details are expected as the EFCC concludes its preliminary interrogations.

BREAKING: Tinubu Orders Withdrawal Of Police Escorts From Ministers

by Folarin Kehinde December 10, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Tinubu has directed the withdrawal of police officers attached to ministers and other top government officials, saying the security personnel were needed for core policing duties across the country.

The President gave the directive on Wednesday during the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting held at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Tinubu said he would rather have police officers deployed for essential security work than assigned as personal escorts to government officials.

“I would rather offer police officers from the VIP Protection or Very Very Important Persons Unit to perform real policing duties,” the President stated. “I honestly believe in what I have said and I call on the Inspector-General of Police, and I hope the Minister for Police Affairs is here, to take note.”

He explained that the decision was driven by the need to strengthen national security and ensure that available law enforcement personnel were properly utilized.

“If you have any problem related to the nature of your assignment, please contact the IGP and get my clearance,” Tinubu said. “The Minister for Interior, along with the IGP and the Civil Defence structure, should replace those police officers who are on special security duties so that we don’t leave people exposed.”

The President also directed the National Security Adviser (NSA) and the Department of State Services (DSS) to provide additional intelligence and form a committee to review the current security structure.

“The first challenge is here and there, kidnapping and terrorism. We need all the forces that we can deploy,” he said. “I know some of our people are exposed, and we must make exceptional provisions for them. The Civil Defence officers are equally armed, and I want the NSA to take it very seriously, even to the point of arming our forest guards.”

Tinubu also charged the National Economic Committee (NEC) and the Vice President to accelerate the implementation of the livestock reform initiative as part of efforts to address recurring conflicts between farmers and herders.

“Especially on livestock reform, I think the Vice President should get NEC to identify which villages or grazing reserves can be salvaged or rehabilitated into ranches,” he said. “We must eliminate the possibility of conflict and turn livestock reform into an economically viable development.”

He emphasised that the initiative should be handled within the constitutional framework that recognizes land ownership by states.

“Whichever land they can salvage, convert it to livestock villages or other viable ventures,” Tinubu added. “Let us stop these conflict areas and turn them into economic opportunities and prosperity.”

The Federal Government on Wednesday arraigned former Minister of Aviation, Senator Stella Oduah, before the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory, Maitama, Abuja, over alleged involvement in a ₦5 billion corruption scheme.

Oduah was brought before the court by the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), on a five-count charge bordering on conspiracy and obtaining money by false pretences.

According to court filings, the former minister was accused of fraudulently obtaining ₦2.4 billion from the Federal Ministry of Aviation through Broad Waters Resources, claiming the funds were meant for “technical supervision.” The alleged offence was said to have occurred in January 2014.

She was further accused in another count of dishonestly receiving an additional ₦2.4 billion through the same company under the same pretext.

The case is expected to continue as the court takes up submissions from both parties.
