Gunmen Abduct Worshippers During Night Vigil in Kogi

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 15, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Gunmen have reportedly abducted several worshippers during a night vigil at a remote mountain location in Kogi State.

The incident occurred on Friday at Egbola, along Agbaja Road in Lokoja Local Government Area.

According to reports, the assailants stormed the prayer site and began shooting sporadically to cause panic before abducting an unspecified number of worshippers.

A source said the Kogi State Vigilante Service, after receiving information on the attack, mobilised to the scene and engaged the gunmen in a shootout.

One of the abducted victims, identified as Mary Adams Gure, was reportedly rescued during the operation. It was gathered that she escaped amid the confusion and was later secured by the vigilantes.

“A search-and-rescue operation is ongoing to locate the remaining abducted persons,” the source said.

Efforts to reach the Kogi State Police Public Relations Officer, William Aya, for comments were unsuccessful, as calls and messages sent to him went unanswered.

2027: PDP govs reject Atiku-led opposition coalition

by Folarin Kehinde April 14, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Governors Forum, have distanced itself from a coalition of opposition politicians.

The Forum under the leadership of the Bauchi State governor, Bala Mohammed, said it won’t join any alliance ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

It disclosed this during a meeting in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital on Monday.

The Forum also heightened the crisis over the authentic national secretary of the party by backing the Deputy National Secretary, Setonji Koshoedo, as Acting National Secretary.

Recall that PDP’s former presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar had announced the birth of an opposition alliance.

The coalition is believed to include former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi and ex-Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, among other politicians.

Atiku had said the coalition is aimed at removing President Bola Tinubu in 2027.

The announcement of the coalition came after El-Rufai defected from the All Progressives Congress to the Social Democratic Party, SDP.

El-Rufai had accused the APC of lack of internal democracy since Tinubu assumed power.

However, former presidential candidate of the Social Democratic Party, Adewale Adebayo, had said Atiku and Obi were in talks to join the SDP.

He said if Atiku, Obi and other prominent politicians willing to join SDP can stick to the party’s culture, they would defeat and retire Tinubu and the APC.

Meanwhile, a chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party, NNPP, Buba Galadima said El-Rufai was Atiku’s placeholder in the SDP should the PDP deny him its presidential ticket.

Peter Obi Visits Plateau, Condemns Killings in Bokkos LGA

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 14, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has visited Plateau State to commiserate with victims and families affected by the recent wave of attacks in Bokkos Local Government Area.

In a statement shared via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle on Monday, Obi described the killings as “senseless” and “unacceptable,” noting that such violence should not occur in a country not officially at war.

“Yesterday, I travelled from Abuja to Jos, Plateau State, to condole with and show solidarity with Governor Caleb Mutfwang and the people of Plateau State over the recent senseless killings in the Bokkos area of the state,” the former Anambra State governor wrote.

During the visit, Obi met with displaced persons, survivors, and children affected by the attacks. He expressed sorrow over the scale of destruction and displacement, and called for urgent measures to protect lives and restore security in the region.

“What has happened in these communities is very saddening and utterly unacceptable. Nigerians should not be killed or forced to flee their homes when we are not at war. Every life is precious, and no Nigerian, regardless of where they live, should have to live in fear or uncertainty,” Obi said.

Offering condolences to the bereaved families, he added, “My deepest condolences go to the families and communities who have suffered tragic losses. No words can truly capture the pain and devastation that such senseless violence brings.”

Obi’s visit comes amid rising insecurity in parts of the country, with repeated calls for enhanced government intervention and protection of lives and property.

Power Generation Companies Threaten Shutdown Over ₦4 Trillion Debt

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 14, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Association of Power Generation Companies (APGC) has warned of a possible nationwide shutdown of power plants due to unpaid invoices exceeding ₦4 trillion.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Col. Sani Bello (Rtd), the association disclosed that the debt comprises ₦2 trillion accrued in 2024 and ₦1.9 trillion in legacy debts. The APGC said the non-payment for electricity supplied to the national grid has triggered a liquidity crisis, severely affecting the operations of power generation companies (GenCos).

According to the association, the crisis has hindered GenCos’ ability to meet critical financial obligations, posing a significant threat to the stability of the entire electricity value chain.

The APGC has called for the immediate implementation of a payment plan to clear all outstanding invoices. It further demanded a reprioritization of the current payment waterfall arrangement, advocating for the full and timely settlement of GenCos’ invoices.

“A clear financing plan is required to support exposures in the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission’s (NERC) Supplementary Order to the MYTO and Distribution Revenue Order (DRO) 2024,” the statement read. The association said such a plan would offer financial stability and predictability, allowing GenCos to plan effectively and invest in system improvements.

Additionally, the APGC is seeking payment security guarantees backed by institutions such as the World Bank and the African Development Bank (AfDB) to ensure uninterrupted payments to GenCos. This, it said, would support the sector’s growth and expansion efforts.

The association also called for greater transparency in billing, collections, and remittance processes to restore trust in the power sector and ensure that GenCos receive accurate and timely payments.

The APGC warned that failure to address these challenges urgently could lead to national security risks and further undermine the country’s electricity supply.

2027 Elections: PDP Governors Dismiss Coalition Talks

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 14, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, yesterday unanimously resolved not to join any coalition or merger as the 2027 elections approach.

The PDP Governors’ Forum meeting, held in Ibadan, Oyo State, was attended by key governors, including Bala Mohammed of Bauchi, Peter Mbah of Enugu, Agbu Kefas of Taraba, Dauda Lawal of Zamfara, Seyi Makinde of Oyo, Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau, Umaru Fintiri of Adamawa, Ademola Adeleke of Osun, and Douye Diri of Bayelsa.

Governors Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta and Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom were represented by their deputies.

In a communiqué read by the Governor of Bauchi State and the forum’s Chairman, Bala Mohammed, the forum noted the “nationwide speculations about possible mergers of parties, groups, and/or associations” and resolved that “the Forum will not join any coalition or merger.”

Equally, the forum emphasised that “the PDP, as a major opposition party, welcomes any parties, persons, or groups that are willing to join the party with a view to wrestling power and enthroning good leadership in 2027.”

The governors reiterated their positions regarding the party’s national secretary, stating, “The Forum reiterates its position taken in Asaba regarding the National Secretary of the party.”

They recommended that the deputy secretary temporarily act as national secretary “pending the nomination and ratification of a substantive secretary from the Southeast zone at its next meeting.”

The communiqué also expressed solidarity with the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara, stating, “We restate our commitment to stand with him until the end amid the challenges posed by the declaration of a state of emergency in his state.”

Addressing the worsening security situation in the country, particularly in Borno, Katsina, and Edo States, the forum expressed alarm, stating, “The Forum finds alarming the worsening security situation in the country.”

The PDP governors called for a “review and reorientation of priorities and strategies,” emphasising the need for a bottom-up approach to tackle security breaches effectively.

Rivers Women Protest In Support Of Emergency Rule

by Nelson Ugwuagbo April 14, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

A coalition of women groups on Monday staged a protest in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, in support of the emergency rule declared by President Bola Tinubu in the state.

Dressed in white, the women marched from the Garrison Flyover to Isaac Boro Park, carrying placards with inscriptions such as “State of Emergency is Constitutional” and “We Don’t Want Fubara.”

The demonstration was led by Ifeyinwa Aguma, a former Commissioner for Social Welfare in Rivers State and an ally of the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike. The protesters expressed support for Ibok-Ette Ibas, who was appointed by President Tinubu as the administrator of the state following the declaration of emergency rule. They urged him to continue his work in the state.

Monday’s protest follows a similar demonstration last week by women who declared their support for the suspended Governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara.

President Tinubu had last month declared a state of emergency in Rivers State due to the ongoing political crisis. He suspended Governor Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all members of the State House of Assembly for an initial period of six months.

Citing security reports and recent pipeline explosions in the state, the President described the emergency declaration as “inevitably compelling.”

Bandits returns after NSA’s visit to Plateau, Killed 40 in fresh attack

by Folarin Kehinde April 14, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Days after the visit of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu to Plateau State, Forty persons have been killed in another attack by assailants on Zike community, Kimakpa in the Kwall district of Bassa Local Government Area of Plateau State.

According to a Kwall community leader, Wakili Tongwe, the attackers invaded the village in the early hours of Monday and shot sporadically at residents who were scampering for safety after hearing gunshots.

The community leader told Channels Television on the phone that a team of vigilantes, including himself and some security personnel, were on patrol in another community when the attackers invaded the village and started shooting.

Though the security personnel engaged the invaders and succeeded in repelling the attackers, the damage had been done, with about thirty-six persons shot dead and four others dying later.

Some other residents sustained gunshot wounds and are receiving medical attention at the hospital.

Security agencies in the state are yet to comment on the attack, which is coming less than two weeks after fifty-two persons were killed in some communities of the Bokkos Local Government Area of the North-Central state.

Plateau State has, for several decades, been a hotbed of killings, with gunmen sacking entire communities. Experts blame the fight for resources between farmers and herders as a major cause of the attacks.

2027: Edo Governor, Okpebholo begins Tinubu re-election campaign

by Folarin Kehinde April 10, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Edo State Governor Monday Okpebholo said this yesterday while kick-starting President Tinubu’s 2027 re-election campaign in the state.

Another member of the main opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 24-member House of Assembly, Kaycee Osamwonyi, the representative of Uhunmwonde Constituency, who is a member of House Committee on Budget and Appropriation, yesterday defected to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

With Osamwonyi’s defection, APC now has 14 members, while PDP is left with 10 members in the House of Assembly.

Okpebholo spoke at the Government House, Benin, when he received the defecting lawmaker (Osamwonyi), who was earlier received into the APC by the state Chairman of the party, Jarrett Tenebe, who later presented him to the governor.

Okpebholo hailed Osamwonyi and his colleagues, who decided to join APC. He assured them that his administration would create a conducive atmosphere for all of them to operate and collaborate to develop Edo.

The governor said his administration had embarked on developmental strides to transform all sectors of Edo economy, thereby making life better for residents.

He said: “We congratulate you (Osamwonyi) on your returning home. Your coming is a plus for the party (APC), as we have five of you who have joined. You have made our party stronger.

“A lot of people from other parties are ready to join our party, and soon there will be a carnival. I seek your help to drive development, and together, we will develop Edo State, and make life better for our people.

“Uhunmwonde Local Government is very special to me, and together we can develop the area and open it for growth and development.

Edo chairman of APC, presenting Osamwonyi to Okpebholo, said: ‘’APC is now in full control of the House of Assembly, in view of having the majority of the lawmakers.’’

Tenebe said: “Osamwonyi joined the party (APC), following the developmental strides your (Okpebholo’s) administration has achieved in the few months you have led Edo State.”

Osamwonyi said his decision to join APC was as a result of the disunity in the PDP from the national to unit level, as well as the achievements of Okpebholo in a very short time in office.

He said: “The division in my party, the PDP, made me to join the APC. For me, it is a homecoming, as I was once in the APC. Your (Okpebholo’s) developmental strides attracted me back home, as I want the best for my people.

“The many projects captured in the budget for Uhunmwonde people are impressive. I have no choice but to join the party (APC), for the development of my people.”

Edo Chairman of PDP, Dr. Tony Aziegbemi, however, declared that Okpebholo was overwhelmed by insecurity across the state’s 18 local governments.

He hoped the party’s governorship candidate during the September 21, 2024 election, Dr. Asue Ighodalo, would emerge victorious at the Court of Appeal, having lost at the Election Petitions Tribunal in Abuja, to ensure good governance.

2027: Road Transport Union Workers, others plan initiative for Tinubu’s re-election

by Folarin Kehinde April 10, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The National Union of Road Transport Workers, Musiliu Akinsanya, popularly known as MC Oluomo, and other influential youth leaders are set to launch a new socio-political group called Team Nigeria Project to support President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in the 2027 general election.

The group aims to increase citizens’ involvement in governance across the country.

The Director General of the group, Olamilekan Pedro, disclosed this to newsmen in Lagos on Wednesday.

Pedro, the organisation will focus on mobilizing support for Tinubu’s continued leadership.

Pedro said, “Under President Bola Tinubu’s leadership, since 2023, Nigeria has seen an economic turnaround.

“Tough but necessary decisions, like removing the fuel subsidy, have brought about positive changes. Today, our IGR is growing, and states are receiving more funds from the federal government for development.

“The Naira is stabilizing, local refineries are operating, and small businesses are thriving thanks to better infrastructure like roads and power. Investments in agriculture have boosted food security, and we no longer rely on food imports. Nigeria’s highways are in great shape, and insecurity has significantly reduced, allowing citizens to live in peace.”

Pedro emphasised that the Team Nigeria Project believes a government that has achieved so much deserves to be rewarded with another term.

He also mentioned that several directorates have been set up to mobilize Nigerians, especially women and youth, to support President Tinubu’s 2027 re-election.

The formal launch of TNP will take place next month in Abuja, with top officials from the ruling All Progressives Congress expected to attend.

FG bans Eedris Abdulkareem’s protest song for singing against Tinubu’s Government

by Folarin Kehinde April 10, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The National Broadcasting Commission has barred Nigerian radio and television stations from airing the trending song “Tell Your Papa” by veteran rapper, Eedris Abdulkareem, citing its “objectionable nature.”

In a memo dated April 9, 2025 and issued by the Coordinating Director of Broadcast Monitoring, Susan Obi, the commission declared the track Not To Be Broadcast (NTBB) under Section 3.1.8 of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.

This section prohibits content deemed inappropriate, offensive, or in breach of public decency from being aired on Nigerian broadcast platforms.

According to the NBC, while the song has gained momentum across social media platforms, its lyrical content fails to meet the standards of responsible broadcasting.

The statement titled, “Restriction on boradcasting ‘Tell Your Papa’ by Eedris Abdulkareem,’ read, “The National Broadcasting Commission has identified the song ‘Tell Your Papa’ by Eedris Abdulkareem, currently trending on social media, as content deemed inappropriate for broadcast due to its objectionable nature.

NBC Bans Eedris Abdulkareem’s “Tell Your Papa” From Airwaves
” It is therefore classified as Not To Be Broadcast (NTBB), as it violates Section 3.1.8 of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code.

“The commission requests that your station exercises discretion and refrains from airing this song to maintain responsible broadcasting standards.

“Your cooperation and commitment to upholding greatly appreciated. Thank you, Susan Obi -Coordinating Director, Broadcast Monitoring.”

The controversial song, released earlier this week, targets Seyi Tinubu, son of President Bola Tinubu, calling on him to confront his father over the worsening socio-economic conditions in Nigeria.

In the track titled “Tell Your Papa,” which was shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Abdulkareem delivered a blunt message, painting a grim picture of the hardships facing everyday Nigerians.

In the track titled “Tell Your Papa,” which was shared on X (formerly Twitter) on Sunday, Abdulkareem delivered a blunt message, painting a grim picture of the hardships facing everyday Nigerians.

The song comes in response to Seyi Tinubu’s recent comments in Adamawa State, where he described his father as “the greatest president in Nigeria’s history.”

In the hard-hitting lyrics, Abdulkareem raps, “Seyi, tell your papa country hard. Tell your papa people dey die. Tell your papa this one don pass jagajaga.”

“Seyi, how far? I swear your papa no try. Too much empty promises. On behalf of Nigerians, take our message to him; kidnappers dey kill Nigerians.

“Seyi, try travel by road without your security make you feel the pains of fellow Nigerians. You dey fly private jets, insecurity no be your problem,” he sings.
