Mystery of APC’s numerous presidential aspirants

by Leading Reporters May 8, 2022
written by Leading Reporters

By Tonnie Iredia

At this year’s anniversary of Press Freedom Day in Abuja where I served as guest speaker, I had asked Nigerian media professionals to endeavour to appreciate the efficacy of the theory of self-esteem. My argument was that no matter one’s situation in life, an eternal positive admonition is that one must strive continuously to position one’s self favourably so as to attract public respect.

The media cannot afford to despair and lament every year on the precarious position it occupies in world affairs in which its members are attacked if not killed for carrying out an approved societal mandate of public enlightenment. Many other institutions which attack the media do so partly because they see many young people in the media who appear to them as irritants while performing their duties. At the end of the lecture, there was the breaking news that more members of Nigeria’s ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) had joined dozens of others to pick up the party’s presidential nomination form at the cost of just N100million.

It looked like a mystery for the party which many have been blaming for the woes of the nation to present itself as the party to beat at next year’s presidential election by unveiling innumerable aspirants. A compelling posture for understanding the inexplicable strategy is to place it within the context of the theory of self-esteem which hypothesizes that those who aim high score high. Already, some Nigerians are now unconsciously preoccupied with looking out more at the possibility of the APC’s re-election instead of thinking of the deteriorating standard of living during its tenure. Indeed, some are beginning to buy the imagination that today’s woes would probably have been worse if another party was in charge.

Whoever designed the strategy must have also suggested to APC leaders to remain ebullient giving their members hope and asking more of them to declare to contest the 2023 presidential elections. So, while ordinary Nigerians appear hypnotized, APC members are enjoined to scorn lamentation as a basis for staying up there!!

Many more nominations may come because rumour-mongering is only a first step towards a declaration in the party. Goodluck Jonathan who had been nurtured by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party PDP to serve as Deputy Governor and Governor of Bayelsa State before becoming Vice President and later President of Nigeria may still pick-up the APC form notwithstanding that the party had declared him clueless some 8 years ago. After all, Central Bank Governor, Godwin Emefiele who had been rumoured along with Jonathan now has his own form. It is not even difficult to do because there are scores of Nigerians who are positioned to act as agents on the subject. And if care is not taken, some aspirants may surprisingly get more than one form each, depending on the number of support groups any aspirant enjoys. As disclosed on national television some three days ago, Godswill Akpabio the uncommon leader (wherever he serves) had to appeal to his admirers nationwide not to get an additional form for him. Therefore, there does not appear to be anything wrong with many more aspirants turning up because Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu, popularly regarded as APC’s national leader and former governor Amosun of Ogun state have already declared that the more the merrier. In other words, the motivation of some Yoruba leaders to bring their aspirants together in a meeting was not to reduce the figure, but to put across some ethical codes on language and general disposition of the aspirants during campaigns.

Such brotherhood has already been shown by two Yoruba aspirants, Senator Ibikunle Amosun and Governor Kayode Fayemi of Ekiti state who claim to have manifestoes which present them as ideological political twins. What one is proposing to do is same as the other’s aspiration. In other climes, such two aspirants would compare notes and agree on which of them should be put forward. Here in Nigeria, that is not the way to go. Instead, it is seen as better for both to contest and pray for anyone of them to be victorious. The additional gain of this approach is that it generates more revenue for the party just as it puts in the public domain, the strength of APC as a party with innumerable presidential aspirants.

What no one can take away from the APC is that each and every aspirant of the party is full of ideas. Unfortunately, not enough efforts have been made to get each ‘aspirant of ideas’ to put such ideas at the disposal of the party. The eloquence with which former governor Adams Oshiomhole explained how to deal with the unending strike by University teachers would no doubt have given a high score to the party if its officials and conciliator had the Oshiomhole therapy and power of persuasion. The teachers are still on strike and their students who have always been made to spend more years than makes sense to obtain a degree are now threatening that no matter the numerical strength of presidential aspirants, the 2023 elections may not hold if the strike is not resolved shortly. It seems logical to agree with our students, that it is more fulfilling to have good governance with education as a priority than to organize a smooth census of political aspirants.

Notwithstanding the outcome of the census, citizens and politicians of Southeast extraction have; on the basis of the need to create a sense of belongingness for all Nigerians, continued to call on political parties to consider an Igbo candidate as the next Nigerian president. However, it is noted that the APC has not stopped her census enumerators of aspirants from operating in the Southeast. At least one governor – Dave Umahi, 3 federal ministers – Ogbonnaya Onu, Chris Ngige and Emeka Nwajiuba along with 3 Senators – Oji Kalu, Rochas Okorocha and Ken Nnamani from the zone are already enumerated. But as far as a former National Chairman of the All Progressives Grand Alliance, Senator Victor Umeh, is concerned, South-West politicians jostling to occupy the presidency in 2023 are not helping the cause of one Nigeria. Umeh’s position is that it is premature for the presidency to return to the Southwest from where it began in 1999 when it is yet to go round the 3 major tripods of the Nigerian nation. This criticism must however recognize that even the leadership of the socio-cultural organization of Yoruba people – Afenifere, has severally made the same point.

The APC will do well to effectively manage its huge figure of presidential aspirants without allowing the process to end in imposition which will no doubt create political tension. Already, there are fears in some quarters that a withdrawal form which is expected to operate as a sworn affidavit may have been designed to meet such end. It would probably be difficult to expect persons who are required to sign sworn affidavits well before the day of primaries to believe that there were no premeditated intentions. The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) can be of help here if it ensures that the conduct of primaries irrespective of the chosen mode is transparent. She can do this by ensuring that all the rules of the game are adhered to. It is expected for instance that she would insist as promised on retrieving authentic political party membership registers.

In the area of voter education, the caution to voters at all levels is for them to look out for the best candidates. The hope is that on account of all the difficulties the nation has passed through in recent years, voters would prioritize good record of previous performance in determining who to vote for. It would not make sense for example to vote for candidates who as governors could neither pay workers’ salaries nor help to improve the living standards of their people. It is not difficult to identify them. Apart from eyewitness accounts, there are credible reports by reputable organizations such as UNICEF which has just released a list of 22 states in Nigeria which are facing malnutrition and food insecurity. It is obviously a better guide than the numerical strength of aspirants.

Aviation Fuel Hike: 9 Airlines Begin Indefinite Strike Monday

by Folarin Kehinde May 8, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Air Peace, Ibom Air, Max Air, Arik Air, United Nigeria Airlines and four others are embarking on an indefinite strike on Monday, May 9, 2022, as the cost of the aviation fuel hits N700 per litre.

Other airlines affected are Aero Contractors, Azman Air, Overland Airways, and Dana Air.

This was disclosed by the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) via a statement issued on Friday.

The statement, which was seen by Nairametrics, was signed by the President of AON, Abdulmunaf Yunusa and copied the Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika and the Director General of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) Capt. Musa Nuhu.

It stated, “It is with a great sense of responsibility and patriotism that the Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) have carried on deploying and subsidising their services to our highly esteemed Nigerian flying public in the last four months despite the astronomical hike in the price of JetA1 and other operating costs.

Overtime, aviation fuel price (JetA1) has risen from N190 per litre to N700 currently. In the face of this, airlines have engaged the Federal Government, the National Assembly, NNPC and oil marketers with the view to bringing the cost of JetA1 down which has currently made the unit cost per seat for a one hour flight in Nigeria today to an average of N120,000.

The latter cannot be fully passed to passengers who are already experiencing a lot of difficulties.

EID EL FITRI: Oyeyemi Congratulates Muslim Ummah, Calls for Precaution and Compliance with Traffic Laws

by Folarin Kehinde May 4, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

As the Muslim Ummah end the Ramadan fast , the Corps Marshal of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Dr Boboye Oyeyemi has sent his congratulatory message on the successful completion of the spiritual exercise as he calls for precaution and compliance with traffic laws.

In his Eid el fitri message, Oyeyemi preached love for one another, peaceful coexistence and care for the less privileged members of the society, saying these are the values of the Ramadan fast which people must imbibe beyond the Sallah celebrations.

The Corps Marshal called on the Muslim Ummah to sustain the positive lessons of the Ramadan fast, noting that acts of denial; selfless service and love which were practiced in the holy month are central to the success of the safer road campaign by the FRSC.

He emphasised that the wanton destruction of lives and property on the nation’s highways resulting from people’s impatience would been avoided, if people properly imbibe the lessons of the Ramadan fast.

In a press release signed by the Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, the FRSC Corps Marshal was quoted as expressing satisfaction with majority of motorist’s conduct throughout the period of the holy month particularly, with regards to compliance with road traffic regulations.

He therefore admonished the Muslims as well as members of the general public not to jettison the rules in the course of the celebration, but to continue to observe them in order to build on the gains made so far.

The FRSC Corps Marshal urged the Muslim Ummah to use the period of the Eid el fitri celebration to offer special prayers for Allah’s blessings, wisdom and guidance. He restated the commitment of the FRSC to sustaining its present collaboration with other security agencies towards effective enforcement of traffic rules and regulations.

Buttressing his point further, Kazeem quoted him as saying; “This year’s Eid el fitri is coming at a time when the Federal Government under President Muhammadu Buhari is working day and night to have the roads fixed. As such, every citizen must therefore, support the measures put in place by the Federal Government to ensure that the roads are motorable”.

Oyeyemi further reassured that Commanding Officers across the country have been given directives to be on the alert during the Sallah celebration to provide all necessary support to members of the public and to particularly attend to whatever emergencies that may arise.

He called on members of the public to join the FRSC in its ongoing campaigns for safer road environment by promptly reporting any road and other emergencies they notice to the FRSC Call Centre through the toll free line: 122 or directly to the studio of the National Traffic Radio through the telephone lines:08052998090 or 09067000015.

Concluding, the Corps Marshal stated that “I wish all the Muslim Ummah Allah’s abundant rewards for the Ramadan fast, and on this occasion of the Eid el fitri celebration, I pray for peaceful celebration to all,” .

Eid-el-Fitri: Sokoto Sheik, Sultan Differs on Moon Sighting

by Folarin Kehinde May 2, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Islamic cleric who led his followers to observe Eid-el-Fitri prayers on Sunday, Sheikh Musa Lukwa, has claimed that he got a report that the moon was sighted from impeccable sources.

The PUNCH had reported that the Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammadu Sa’ad Abubakar, declared Monday as Eid-ul-Fitr, saying that no moon was sighted on Saturday.

The sighting of the moon signifies the commencement of the Muslims’ Ramadan fast and the end of it.

However, Sheik Luka faulted the Sultan’s findings, saying that it contradicted the Islamic ethics of announcing a new month in Islam.

The Sokoto Sheikh explained the Sultan shouldn’t have based his decision on scientific findings after human beings reportedly sighted the moon.

He said, “A lecturer at the Usman Danfodiyo University, Dr. Maigari, confirmed the sighting of the new moon at the main campus of the university and there were reports on the new moon from about 10 communities in Jega, Kebbi State, which was confirmed by the Chief Imam of Jega, Malam Bashar.”

“And Sheikh Dahiru Bauchi also confirmed the sighting of the new moon in many places in the country.

“So, we observed our Eid in compliance with the instruction of the Holy Prophet who asked us to fast and to break the fast at the sighting of the new moon. It is agreed that obedience to our leaders, especially, the Sultan, is compulsory for every Muslim but on the condition that he did not disobey Allah and His Prophet (SAW).

“You can’t take decisions based on scientific evidence by astronauts because it is against our religion and even Imam Malik discouraged this.”

The Sultan had announced that the Muslim’s Eid-el-Fitr, which marks the end of the holy fasting month of Ramadan, holds on Monday in Nigeria.

Also, Saudi Arabia announced that Eid-el-Fitr would begin on Monday in the country.

Nigeria, including some Gulf states like the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Qatar and Bahrain did not sight the moon, The PUNCH learnt.

The timing of Eid is determined by the sighting of the crescent moon, in accordance with the Muslim’s Hijrah calendar.

Nomination Forms Hike: Who will contribute for the Nigerian Youth?

by Folarin Kehinde April 29, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Anyebe Victor, Abuja

Despite the democratic rule in Nigeria that the country “boast” to practice through constitutional amendments and laws to support it, the activities the of country could be best described as a Banana Republic where everything is possible.

Her Youthful population is now described as a curse owing to high rate of crime due to unemployment that has now become the new norm.

The Political landscape tends to beam a light for a prospective future for the youth especially when the NotTooYoungToRun bill was passed into law.

Meanwhile, Democracy as widely accepted is a system of government where laws, policies, leadership and major undertakings of a state or other polity are directly or indirectly decided by the people.

In simple words, it is of the people, by the people and for the people.

With this definition, one would wonder why and how the democracy would have its course in Nigeria when so much money is spent on getting just the nomination form alone and then spend huge amount of money to campaign afterwards then still spend another to rig election.

Nigeria is gradually failing with unpatriotic and uncivilized politicians who unfortunately got into the corridors of power through illegal means.

It is unheard of for a political party to peg its presidential form for N100m. Who exactly are they trying to prevent? That is a story for another day.

When I see young people celebrating today and making jest that most people seeking political leadership under the APC can’t afford to pick nomination forms, I fear for the next elections because events leading to such time will be lethal as those people who will win this circle.

The #NoTooYoungToRun campaign was to allow participation of young capable people into public service. The APC led government signed this into law then turned around to hike the prices of Nomination forms for offices beyond the reach of young people to the advantage of the cabals and forces that has always been.

The high cost of nomination forms by the ruling APC is clearly a message to the young people that it is better to acquire money at all cost, including; stealing, rituals, kidnapping etc as long as you are rich enough to be eligible for political participation.

The main opposition party PDP is by extension not left out because if they can makes theirs to be:

  1. N41m – Presidential
  2. N21m – Governorship
  3. N3.5m – Senate
  4. N2.5m – House of Reps
  5. N600k – House of Assembly.

Then it is highly unreasonable if they as a party should criticise the ruling party APC. The question is; will they not hike the nomination forms as well if they were to be in power?

The man President Buhari in 2014 that most Nigerian Youths all contributed monies for to obtain the presidential form at N21m, the same man who signed the “No too young to run bill” into law with a promise to handover power to youths in 2018.

He’s today the chairman of NEC of his political party alongside his APC leaders hike the presidential nomination form fee to a whopping sum of N100m.

Where will the “lazy Nigerian Youths” according to him get such money?

It is unfortunate that a country where hunger, strife, unemployment, insecurity, disunity, economic hardship, decaying educational system and a dwindling standard of living has become normal, the APC has slammed a N100m price tag on Nigerians wishing to vie for the presidential position on its platform and it is ridiculously appalling that the youths that averagely earns N30,000 only as the so called minimum wage is expected to get into politics in Nigeria with the way things stands?

In Nigeria, it is now the case of “The more you look, the less you see”.

Nigerian Youth will at the end will be used as the usual tool for campaigns, electioneering and ‘rigging’.

What is even more worrisome is that Nigerian Youth are always ready and willing to be used as tools for these vices because of paltry sum at the detriment of mortgaging their “future” if one ever exist.

While the already wealthy politicians are still being contributed for to purchase the nomination forms, the Nigerian Youth looks headlong with no one to buy for them.

Considering the above, there is no gainsaying that the Nigerian Youth are still TooYoungToRun.
