Implications of attacking prospective Alaba voters

by Leading Reporters June 12, 2022
written by Leading Reporters

Tonnie Iredia

Last Thursday, some hoodlums reportedly attacked traders who had shut down their shops at the Alaba International Market, Ojo, Lagos to register to collect their permanent voters’ cards (PVC). According to reports, officials of the market had instructed that all shops be shut to allow their members ample time to get their PVCs at the INEC office in the Igbede area of Ojo.

Following this directive, there was massive turnout of traders, mostly of Igbo extraction at the registration point. But while the exercise was ongoing, thugs armed with machetes, sticks and clubs allegedly stormed the venue to disrupt the process and also made moves to cart away INEC machines. Luckily, the traders were able to stop the thugs from having their way.

The incident immediately sent disturbing signals nationwide particularly because the traders were said to have earlier given notice to the electoral body on their plans. While many condemned the attacks, some blamed the traders for mobilizing mammoth crowds capable of overwhelming the available INEC logistics on ground. There are a few reasons why the condemnation is feeble. First, until the period of registration expires, INEC ought to be fully ready for any person or group that comes up for registration, no matter how small or large. Second, after making several appeals to Nigerians to be patriotic enough to perform their civic duty of determining the country’s new political office holders at all levels, it would be unfair to blame certain large groups for presenting themselves for registration. The argument that the traders would have been better treated if they didn’t constitute a large crowd, may have a point but it cannot criminalize large crowds seeking to register as voters especially if all those in the group were qualified to be registered

Those who deserve blame are thugs who attack persons seeking to be registered. As usual, the recent discussion has been about the large crowd and how members of the group recognized as mostly Igbo traders ought not to have waited till now before wanting to register. But who were the thugs that attacked the prospective voters? Have they been apprehended? If so, how has the case been handled? In addition, what was the motivation for the attacks and for whose sake did the thugs engage in such illegal behaviour?  Except steps have since been taken to penalize such thugs and their sponsors, no one should pretend to be surprise if they repeat the same behaviour during the forthcoming general elections. After all, although pictures of previous attacks on certain voting centres which had many Igbo voters during the 2019 general elections were in the public domain, the perpetrators were not apprehended. Indeed, there was public belief at the time that the thugs had official backing because armed security officials present at the affected centres merely looked the other way.

The idea of preventing some Nigerians from collecting their PVCs so as to make it impossible for them to vote or other efforts at rendering the votes of others invalid through thuggery must be discouraged. If not, some shrewd politicians would be emboldened to impose on the voting process, an electoral malpractice known as gerrymandering. This is a term used to describe the carving out of fake electoral wards as well as ‘dilution’ which means to subtract from the voting capacity of a targeted population. Lagos politicians are known to have always done this over the years by disrupting locations where their opponents are popular. It is therefore not irrational to imagine that last Thursday’s thugs were strategically organized to disenfranchise persons they assumed may not vote for their preferred parties/candidates. The practice of seeking to put some parties at an advantage well before voting day should be discouraged if we are really interested in strengthening Nigeria’s democracy

A major reason why this caution must be well sounded now is to avoid violence which may arise from reprisal attacks by those shortchanged by official or ‘unknown’ thugs in the 2023 election. In the case of the attack on the Alaba market traders which is the main concern of this piece, their plan to present themselves before INEC last Thursday had been made public since the beginning of the week. There was thus enough time for the police to mobilize to ensure peace at the event in view of the numerical strength of the traders. The inability of the police to do anything until a clash occurred was poor forecasting. If it had been youths or students who similarly got together to protest certain societal ills, the police would have stopped the meeting ‘with immediate alacrity’ as if democracy abhors protests. Perhaps there is need to inform our law enforcement agencies that election security is not just a voting day affair but an all-time surveillance strategy all through the process.

Not surprisingly, the police issued a statement that hardly diffused public apprehension. They said nothing about whether or not the thugs were apprehended and held to account. Instead, they observed that the crowd was too large adding that registration in phases would have been better. The typical police statement read as follows: “One of the people who came for registration made trouble and was challenged by those around. Going by simple probability, the attacker or the attacked is very likely to be Igbo. They were simply large in number. However, giving this incident ethnic coloration would not help matters. The entire episode lasted a few minutes. Sadly, recordings from those few minutes are still traveling far and wide. Normalcy has since returned and the Divisional Police Officer there is fully in charge of the security situation.”

But at the Tafawa Balewa Square in the Lagos Island area of the state, INEC recorded hundreds of youths who besieged the centre to register for their PVCs on the same Thursday. During the exercise, it was observed that security agents including the army, police and private security personnel had to arrange the youths in batches to control the crowd.  What this suggests is that the Alaba traders were differently handled perhaps because it was suspected that they may massively vote against the ruling party. In a democracy everyone should be allowed to decide whether to vote for the old or new order. Fortunately, reliable sources at INEC have revealed that more registration machines would be available this new week to seamlessly register the traders and other qualified Nigerians.

However, it is important to call on the leaders of the traders to appropriately organize their members to for once, take one or two days off from trading to understand the electoral process which they are now seeking to participate in. First, they need to know that no one is allowed to register more than once. So, those of them who registered before should not get into a fresh registration process because it is a punishable crime. Any person who for instance has lost his or her PVC should merely seek a replacement for that. But more importantly, it is unwise for the traders to register around their shops which they may not be able to access on voting day because of the usual restrictions to movement.

In the last couple of years, the Nigerian nation has gone through a low era – one of insurgency, weak economy and high prices that have combined to make life in the country unbearable. In the recent past also, events have shown that there is hardly any difference between the major political parties who have virtually shortchanged the people. This is therefore not a time for voting for candidates on political party basis. All Nigerians are thus enjoined to convince themselves that their preferred candidates are quite capable of altering the nation’s precarious circumstances. For this to happen, all citizens who are qualified to vote should endeavour to use their ballots wisely. Accordingly, no one should stand in the way of those seeking to get their PVCs for purposeful and informed decisions.

Justice at Last: Killers of Fasonranti’s Daughter Sentenced to Death by Hanging

by Folarin Kehinde June 11, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

An Ondo State High Court has sentenced three out of four suspected killers of the 58-year-old daughter of the national leader of the Pan Yoruba Socio-Political group, Mrs Funke Olakunrin, to death by hanging.

The Ondo Attorney General arraigned Mohammed Usman, Osagie Lawal and Adamu Adamu in 2019 for the murder of Olakunrin.

They were charged with four counts including felony to wit murder, murder, kidnapping.

Delivering judgment, Justice William Olamide, discharged and acquitted the fourth defendant, Abubakar, who was charged with aiding and abetting the crime.

Justice Olamide held that the prosecution proved its case beyond a reasonable doubt.

The judge delivered the judgment after listening to submissions by the prosecution and defence counsel and adopted the final written addresses.

Mr Charles Titiloye appeared for the prosecution while Mr Obafemi Bawa appeared for the defence.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that they were first arraigned in an Akure Magistrates’ Court, which ordered their remand in Owo Correctional Centre.

NAN reports that the convict then had no representation in court but pleaded not guilty to all the charge.

The Ondo State Attorney-General, Kola Olawoye, who represented the state, declared that the state government was ready to take over the case.

He urged the court to rely on the statement deposed by an official of FSARs, Akeem Ogunjobi, who prayed that the suspects should be remanded at the Correctional Centre in Owo because Akure Correctional facility was over stretched.

He also pleaded with the court to allow the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) to conduct COVID-19 test on the defendants before moving them to the Correctional Centre.

According to him, the test was necessary because of the coronavirus pandemic ravaging the globe.

He said the health status of the four accused persons must be ascertained in order not to infect other inmates at the facility.

Magistrate Victoria Bob-Manuel, in her ruling, granted the prayers of the prosecuting counsel and remanded the accused at Owo Correctional facility. She also ordered that their samples must be tested before being remanded at the centre.

Bob-Manuel, however, disclosed that the court lacks the jurisdiction to try the defendants but adjourned the case to June 3, for the advice of the Director of Public Prosecution. (NAN)

From Frying Pan to Fire: APC Picks Another Unfit Tinubu After Buhari – Disporans for PDP

by Folarin Kehinde June 9, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

As the 2023 presidential election shifts into high gear, the All Progressives Congress (APC) has pulled a big surprise on Nigerians home and abroad by selecting a retired, physically unfit man, Former Lagos State Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu, as candidate for president of Nigeria.

In response, a US-based organization of Nigerians in diaspora, Diasporans for PDP, has called on APC to stop joking with the future of Nigeria.

In a statement to press by the organization’s National Publicity Secretary, Chidi Igwe, Diasporans for PDP expressed total dismay that APC’s choice of a retired, physically unfit man for president of the Federal Republic of Nigeria is retrogressive and will leave Nigeria in a worst shape than the country has been under President Muhammadu Buhari, who himself, was retired and physically unfit when he took office eight years ago.

“The job of a president requires a sound mind, and by what we see today, Former Governor Tinubu is not physically fit, and will not be any different from President Buhari. I think the new name of that party should be All Retrogressive Congress,” says the Diasporans for PDP founder and national chair Honourable Victoria Pamugo.

“Every Nigerian has seen how unproductive and backward our country has been in the past eight years just because we have a retired, physically unfit person as president in Aso Rock.

Instead of giving Nigerians hope by choosing a young, physically fit, working-class Nigerian as we see in other countries like Canada and France, APC has once again shown that they do not represent the interests of the Nigerian people. Rather, they are just working to satisfy the political aspirations of a few retired men among their ranks,” Honourable Pamugo noted.

“Is Nigeria really ready to jump from frying pan to fire? APC’s choice of candidate is bad news for our country,” she lamented.

At the same time, Diasporans for PDP called all members of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to unite ahead of the campaign to defeat APC. The US-based organization, which, last week, released a congratulatory message to the PDP flag-bearer, Former Vice President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, His Excellency Atiku Abubakar, deems it necessary to remind the party about what is really at stake in this election.

“Nigerians have really suffered a lot in the hands of their incompetent, wicked, and nonchalant government under President Buhari and his APC cronies,” says Honourable Pamugo.

“These incompetent APC leaders have taken the country more than one hundred years backward,” Honourable Pamugo lamented.

“Nigerians have no access to good jobs, good healthcare system, good education… We have no electricity, no food, and no good roads. We have no security. Nothing is working in our country. Citizens are frustrated. People are killed on the streets of Nigeria everyday and everywhere with reckless abandon.

There is no potable water. Inflation is at rates never seen before. We have an abysmal rate of youth unemployment. We have no reliable broadband internet connectivity. All bridges, schools and infrastructure built by our founding fathers are all crumbling as we watch, and no new ones are being built. We have an uncontrollable brain-drain caused by massive exodus as working-class Nigerians migrate to other countries day by day.”

“What country can survive with all these vices?” Honourable Pamugo questioned rhetorically.

“Those are the things at stake in this election. Should Nigeria continue like this? I think the answer is NO in all caps. The key question Nigerians should be asking themselves is why on earth should we give APC another chance to run this country, especially when they have scorned the youth and have continued to choose these retired, physically unfit men for president?”

“All that President Buhari and APC have given us in the past eight years is institutionalizing corruption, even as they apply selective justice by using state security agencies to go after their supposed or perceived enemies and political opponents, while at the same time protecting the fat cats that continue to milk the nation through corrupt means.”

“Restoring hope, life and dignity of every Nigerian is what is at stake in this election, and PDP has a chance to show Nigerians what we can do differently as a party to change the direction in which the country is currently going.”

“We know that some party members may have been wronged in more than one way, and everyone is right to express their dissatisfaction with one party decision or another. But in the end, we are a family. We must not let our eyes off the ball. The things at stake are strong enough to cause us to unite for the benefit of all Nigerians.”

“That is why, on behalf of Diasporans for PDP, I am calling on all PDP members and party lovers to bury the hatchet for the sake of unity. Now that our flag-bearer has emerged, our party must unite, rally around our candidate, and focus on the big fight to defeat APC in 2023. And I believe that PDP is the only party that has the chance, the system, and existing structure to be able to defeat APC,” she added.

“We do not want another four or even eight years of an incompetent, retired and wicked government in Nigeria. PDP must unite for the benefit and future of our country, as it is only through unity that we will achieve victory in this election,” she said.

“As Nigerians in the diaspora, we know that we are not eligible to vote in this election. We also know that we represent a powerful economic and influential bloc. Diasporans for PDP is ready and will help to galvanize the diaspora population to bring about real and lasting change in Nigeria,” Honourable Pamugo affirmed.

“We will mobilize our brothers, sisters, mothers, fathers, uncles and families in Nigeria to vote wisely and together we will redeem our country from the harm caused by President Buhari and his APC friends over the past eight years,” she emphasized.

“We will support our party and our flag-bearer by mobilizing our volunteers on ground in every state of the federation for grassroots campaign operations, including door-knocking, speaking directly to voters and encouraging Nigerians to save their own country through the power of their vote.”

PAGED Initiative Provides Psychological Support for Journalists

by Folarin Kehinde June 9, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Kenny Folarin, Abuja

In a bid to ensure a sound mental health for the pen professionals, PAGED Initiative in collaboration with Jela’s Development Initiatives (JDI) organized a 2 day mental health session for Journalists in Abuja.

The Programme Director, Ummi Bukar while speaking at the session stated that the mental health and wellbeing of journalists is important considering their roles as reporters who get firsthand information and the first “gate-keepers” in news reporting.

According to Bukar, psychological support is key to journalists as it will not just make them happy doing their duties but make them perform better.

Participants at the Session

“So we see first hand some of the work that journalist do and the impact on themselves and we just thought that it will be good to also give support to journalists so that they are able to do their jobs and manage it better”.

“If we have a more balanced happy journalists, it means that the quality of work is going to be better, the society and the media organizations itself, so I think we should find way to ensure that journalists have psychological support”.

She explained that the mental health session is a learning curve for them as it helps them understand what journalists are going through and what their psychosocial needs are and provide solutions to it.

Participants at the Session

“This is an important component that should not be ignored, we have carried out many advocacy with the help of the media on gender, conflict and a host of others I think it is the turn of the journalists and for us to ensure that they are better treated to have better support”.

Bukar assured that they will ensure that media organizations take mental health of journalists more seriously and provide needed support in their workspace for effective delivery.

“The next step is to ensure that media organizations take mental health of Journalists more seriously, give them needed support, we need to create sort of awareness that even for the media houses”.

Nigerian students now exempted from taking English test at this Canadian university

by Leading Reporters June 7, 2022
written by Leading Reporters

A Nigerian academic has reportedly succeeded in getting the University of Alberta to remove Nigeria from countries that have to present proof of their English language proficiency before admission.

On Twitter, Olumuyiwa Igbalajobi, a Nigerian academic based in Canada, said he had written to the University of Alberta’s graduate school asking that applicants from Nigeria be exempt from submitting the test.

After following up, he claimed that Nigeria was added to the list of countries where English is the official language of instruction.

The University of Alberta had previously recognised some Nigerian schools whose students do not need an English test, but Igbalajobi’s request saw the school granting a full waiver.

About 2 weeks ago, I initiated a request via email, Linkedin, and Twitter to the graduate school of the University of Alberta asking that applicants from Nigeria should be exempted from submitting English proficiency tests.

— Olumuyiwa Igbalajobi, Ph.D (@olumuyiwaayo) June 4, 2022

University of Alberta’s English language proficiency test waiver for Nigerians welcomed

Many Twitter users lauded Igbalajobi’s effort in getting the University of Alberta to recognise English as the official language of instruction in Nigeria.

In response to his tweet, Twitter user Akhila Jayaram said, “Well done @olumuyiwaayo. @UAlberta should consider extending to all Commonwealth countries where medium of instruction is English for a large number of students.”

Another user, TITITUNDE, said: “Writing IELTS or other proof of English doesn’t make people speak good English, it’s just a way of exploiting Africa. Kudos for your kind gesture, I pray another university follows suit.”

Adedoyin Alimi said: “I believe most of these grad schools are just waiting for one or more enquiries bout this. I recalled when applying to Wayne State university last year and they were requesting for English Tets (sic).

“Fortunately they organised an open house event for prospective grad students and we ..raised it. Guess what, within 48 hours after, Nigeria was added to list of countries with English as language of instruction. It was even the email I got from grad school that English Language has not been waived that made me know. So most times, no harm in making enquiries (sic).”

English language proficiency tests controversial for some

Many universities require international students to take English proficiency tests for admission if English is not their first language.

The test has proved controversial for some students, particularly those from Nigeria, where English is the official language. Much of the furore surrounding mandatory English proficiency exams is due to the fees charged for a single test.

Ebenezar Wikina, a Nigerian student who is an advocate for the change of English proficiency policies, previously told Study International: “I personally believe that it’s a crime for the English proficiency tests in English-speaking countries especially knowing that they cost up to US$250 (three times the minimum wage in Nigeria). The results expire every two years as well.”

To complicate matters, two popular English language proficiency tests — the IELTS and TOEFL — have a two-year validity date. Once it expires, the test scores cannot be used for future applications, and students have to retake the exam even if they did well the first time.

Speaking to Legit.ng, Igbalajob said: “From my own lens of equality, diversity, and inclusion, this is just unfair. Nigeria is an English-speaking country and the mode of instruction from the elementary to the tertiary institutions is in English.”

He said subjecting applicants to another round of English tests is “annoying”, adding that the financial constraints “have also prevented a lot of applicants from a shot to most of these universities”.

Breaking: Ken Nnamani Withdraws from Presidential Race

by Folarin Kehinde June 6, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Ken Nnamani, former senate president, has pulled out of the race to secure the presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The former lawmaker announced his withdrawal during a meeting with journalists in Abuja on Monday.

He said: “In the present circumstances, it does not make any sense for me to continue in the race as I have not had the opportunity to market my profile and ideas to the delegates of our party in a manner that allow for deliberation and introspection.

“Therefore, I discontinue my aspiration and wish the party successful primary and unity of purpose so that we can win the 2023 general elections.

He noted that he will continue to engage with the party and its leadership to make sure that the ideas and values that I cherish and propagate find strong footing in the party administration and in public leadership after election.

He assured that no matter the outcome of the primary, he prays that the party does justice to the southeast that ought to present the next presidential candidate of the party.

He expressed optimism that he would be glad if any of his colleagues from the southeast vying for the office wins the primary as any of them can provide strong leadership to the country.

BREAKING: Northern Govs Reject Lawan As Consensus Candidate, Insist Power Must Shift To South

by Folarin Kehinde June 6, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The All Progressives Congress (APC) governors from the North have rejected the choice of Senate President Ahmed Lawan as the consensus presidential candidate of the party.

The National Chairman of the party, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, was said to have announced Lawan as the consensus candidate, a decision members of the National Working Committee reportedly disagreed with.

In a meeting on Monday with President Muhammadu Buhari, the Northern governors insisted that power should rotate to Southern part of the country in 2023.

The Chairman of the Northern States Governors’ Forum, Governor Simon Lalong of Plateau State, briefed State House reporters after the meeting with the president at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

He said the 13 of them apologised to the president for receiving the information about their position after it was leaked.

The governor, however, said that they took the decision in the interest of justice and peace in the country.

Lalong, who stated that they would hold another meeting by 5pm today among themselves, said the president agreed with their position and maintained that the presidential candidate must emerge through a transparent process.

He said President Buhari told them he did not have an anointed candidate for now and directed them to meet the party’s National Working Committee (NWC) to agree on the succession plan.

On the absence of the Governor of Kogi State at the meeting where the power shift decision was taken, he said his colleague was not part of the agreement as his signature was not on the statement.

In his contribution, Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State said it was the democratic right of Kogi governor to excuse himself.

Details later…

Owo Attack: Akeredolu Directs Nigerian Flag to fly half-mast for 7 Days

by Folarin Kehinde June 6, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Following the terrorist attack on Saint Francis Catholic Church, Owa-luwa Street, Owo, the headquarters of the Owo Local Government Area of Ondo State, on Sunday, the state Governor, Arakunrin Rotimi Akeredolu, has directed all public buildings and official residences in the state to fly the Nigerian flag half-mast for seven days to honour the victims of the attack.

This is contained in a press statement posted to the Facebook page of the governor on Monday and signed by his Chief Press Secretary, Richard Olatunde.

According to the statement, Akeredolu said the attack was “a deliberate and calculated assault on the people of the state,” adding that his government would not “be deterred in responding appropriately to this dastardly act.”

The statement, titled, ‘Akeredolu directs flying of flags at half mast in honour of victims of Owo terror attack,’ partly read, “Ondo State Governor, Arakunrin Oluwarotimi Akeredolu, SAN, has directed all public buildings, facilities and official residences to fly the Nigerian flag at half -mast for seven days in honour of the victims of the Owo terror attack on Sunday.

“Governor Akeredolu said the attack on innocent worshipers at St Francis Catholic Church, Owa-luwa Street, Owo was a deliberate and calculated assault on the people of the state.”

The statement further quoted the governor as saying, “Those who unleashed this unprovoked terror attack on our people have tested our collective resolves. We will not be deterred in responding appropriately to this dastardly act.

“In honour of the victims of this unfortunate attack, I hereby direct that all flags be flown at half-mast for seven days, starting from today, Monday, June 6, to Sunday, June 12, 2022. It is a collective loss to the people of our dear state.”
