Kano APC denies offering bribe to tribunal, replies NNPP, Kano State Government

by Andrew Mailafia August 17, 2023
written by Andrew Mailafia

The All Progressives Congress in Kano state has cautioned the leader of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Kano State against dragging the chairman of the National and State Assembly Election Petition Tribunal, Hon. Justice Flora Ngozi Azinge, to disrepute due to its dismal defence performance at the tribunal.

Noting that the Kano State government is on a deliberate move to malign the tribunal chairman for fear of what could be possibly the final judgement, created a fictitious story and quoted the tribunal charman out of context.

The APC however, condemned the attitude and said that it amounted to disrespect for the judge and the judiciary in general.

A statement signed on Thursday, August 11 by the immediate past Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs and Spokesperson for Gawuna/Gari Campaign Council, Mallam Muhammad Garba, mentioned that “when Hon. Justice Azinge made the revelation on the alleged attempt to bribe a member of the tribunal by a senior lawyer, she never named any particular party.”

According to him, in order to denigrate the APC, the NNPP government referred to the APC as the bribe giver. The action of the Kano State government is nothing but gimmickry and an attempt to also disparage the All Progressive Congress.”

Stressing that Kano State Government was also preempting the possible unravelling of the actual bribe giver by the tribunal and therefore wanted to malign the judge, Garba said that the allegation by the Kano State Commissioner for Information, Baba Halilu Dantiye revealed that the government was trying to vilify the tribunal before the judgement so that it draws sympathy from the unsuspecting public in the event it is defeated.

“To also further confirm how perplexed they are, they filed an appeal while the tribunal is still holding its proceedings, saying however that their action will not stop the election petition tribunal from going on with its sittings until it delivers final judgement.

“Even with an apparent sign of victory on its side, the APC has not and will never offer any bribe to anyone involved in the case considering that it has presented facts and figures to prosecute the matter before the tribunal”, Garba said.

Pointing that NNPP government had failed to present any tangible witness to depend on its case, Garba however, emphasised that the APC had presented all its witnesses during the proceedings of the tribunal who have been successfully cross-examined.

UNICAL suspends Law faculty dean over sexual harassment allegations

by Andrew Mailafia August 17, 2023
written by Andrew Mailafia

The embattled faculty of law Dean of the University of Calabar has been suspended by the management of the institution over allegations bordering sexual harassment.

Ndifon’s suspension was effected on August 17, following a probe by the management of the school into the allegations of sexual harassment levelled against him by female students of the faculty on Monday.

An earlier viral video on social media had shown the students of the faculty protesting in the office of the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Florence Obi, bearing placards with inscriptions such as, “Ndifon must go for our sanity”, “We are tired of buying law journals”, “We are tired of lecturers not attending classes”, and “Law girls are not your bonanza; Prof. Ndifon should stop grabbing us and others.”

Meanwhile the university professor had denied the allegation levelled against him in an interview with CrossRiverWatch, stressing that the protest was orchestrated by individuals within the faculty who held a grudge against him.

Also a letter signed by the school registrar, Gabriel Egbe, made available to the press through the university’s spokesperson, Eyo Bassey said the management was unsatisfied with the response to the query served on Ndifon.

The letter partly read, “Please refer to our letter Ref UC/REG/DISC.45A dated August 14, 2023 on your alleged violation of the provisions of the extant laws and policies of the University and your response to the said letter, which was dated August 16, 2023.

“The Vice Chancellor has gone through your written representations and is not satisfied with your explanations.

“She has therefore directed that you be relieved of your position as Dean, Faculty of Law and placed on suspension while the matter is referred to a panel that will be set up to investigate these allegations.

“The relief of position as Dean, Faculty of Law, and suspension from official duties takes effect from August 17, 2023 You are to hand over all University property in your possession, including all official responsibilities presently handled by you to the Sub-Dean of the Faculty before vacating office.

“You are to stay away from the university premises except while responding to an invitation from the panel investigating these allegations.”

Godwin Emefiele breaks down in tears as court postpones arraignment for fraud

by Folarin Kehinde August 17, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The suspended CBN Governor, Godwin Emefiele was in tears on Thursday as the High court of the Federal Capital Territory adjourned his arraignment to 23rd August, 2023.

The arraignment which was initially scheduled for Thursday was stalled due to the absence of some of the defendants joined in the charge.

Emefiele who was present in court, was charged alongside Sa’adatu Yaro, a female CBN employee, and her company, April1616 Investment Limited, on 20 charges bordering on procurement fraud, conspiracy and conferring corrupt advantages.

On July 25, he was arraigned on a two-count charge bordering on “illegal possession” of firearms at a federal high court in Ikoyi and was granted bail in the sum of N20 million.

Nicholas Oweibo, the judge, had ordered that Emefiele be kept in the custody of the Nigeria Correctional Service (NCoS) pending the fulfilment of his bail conditions.

But the DSS insisted that Emefiele must return to its custody — a development that led to the face-off between the secret police and prison officials.

After the face-off, DSS rearrested Emefiele on the court premises.

The secret service proceeded to file an application before a high court of the federal capital territory seeking to further detain the suspended CBN governor.

The application was struck out after it was withdrawn by the service over jurisdictional concerns.

On August 3, the federal government also filed an application before the federal high court in Lagos, seeking leave to appeal against the order granting bail to Emefiele.

Again, FCT indigenes hope dashed as Wike becomes first Southerner to be appointed FCT Minister in 47 years

by Folarin Kehinde August 17, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

With the appointment of former Governor of Rivers, Nyesom Wike Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday, it marks the first time a southerner is appointed into such position in 47 years.

The first time a southerner to be appointed as FCT minister was in 1976 when former military head of state, Gen. Olusegun Obasanjo appointed Mobolaji Ajose-Adeogun.

Ajose-Adeogun was appointed by a southerner into that position, so also is Wike, who was appointed by a southern president, Tinubu as FCT minister.

According to a former presidential spokesman, Reno Omokri, “it has taken forty-seven years for a non-Northerner to occupy that position again and coincidentally, just like in 1976, the person was appointed by a fellow Southerner.

“Sadly, the original indigenes of the area now known as the Federal Capital Territory have never been appointed minister.

“Hopes had been high that the President would appoint the first FCT indigene ever nominated as a minister, Zephaniah Jisalo, to that position. But we have seen the way the cookie crumbled.”

Tinubu to swear in new ministers Monday

by Folarin Kehinde August 17, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Tinubu will on Monday swear in the new ministers who have just been assigned portfolios.

According to a statement by the office of the secretary to the government of the federation (SGF), the ceremony will take place in the conference room of the State House at 10 am.

William Bassey, the director of information in the office of the SGF, who signed the statement, said the ministers are to come with two guests each.

Earlier, the presidency released the list containing the names of the new ministers and their portfolios.

In the list, Nyesom Wike is appointed as the minister of the federal capital territory (FCT).

Wike is the second southerner to head the FCT after Ajose Adeogun, the only person from the region, who was appointed in 1976.

The president appointed Gboyega Oyetola, former governor of Osun, as the minister of transportation.

The list shows that the north-west has 10 ministers, while north-east has six. The north-central and south-west have eight and nine ministers respectively, while south-east and south-south have five each.

According to the portfolios assigned by the president, Tinubu made Bosun Tijani the minister of communications, innovations and digital economy and Wale Edun the person heading the ministry of finance and coordinating minister of economy.

On July 27, Tinubu forwarded a list of 28 nominees to the senate for screening and confirmation.

Again, on August second, the president sent the list of the second batch of ministerial nominees to the senate for screening.

While the senate confirmed the nomination of 45 persons on the list, three nominees, including Nasir el-Rufai, former governor of Kaduna — Stella Okotete (Delta) and Danladi Abubakar (Taraba), were not confirmed due to issues relating to security clearance.
