CBN audit report to be available soon- FG

by Andrew Mailafia September 25, 2023
written by Andrew Mailafia

The Federal Government has admitted that most of the problems confronting Nigeria were caused by bad governance from the nation’s leadership.

The government however scored the administration of President Bola Tinubu high for his sound decision on the Central Bank of Nigeria, saying the report of audit by a special investigator would be out soon

According to the Statement read, “In accordance with the fundamental objective set forth in Section 15(5) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended), this administration is, today, continuing the fight against corruption by appointing you as a Special Investigator, to investigate the CBN and Related Entities. This appointment shall be with immediate effect and you are to report directly to my office.”

But answering questions from journalists during a press conference in Abuja on the 63rd independence anniversary of Nigeria, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, said Nigerians would know what really went wrong and what brought the country to its present situation.

He said that many problems confronting us are because of bad governance. The present government has confronted and is confronting these challenges. When President Bola Tinubu came on board, he made a very sound decision at the CBN. That singular act led to the massive improvement in the capital market, as experts have told us, it is something that can never happen in the past 15 years.

“We have a new team at the CBN and a special investigator has been in the CBN for sometime now and his result will soon be released and Nigerians will know what really went wrong and what brought us to where we are today.”

According to him, no world leader had been invited for the 63rd independence anniversary of Nigeria scheduled for October 1, saying the decision was taken in line with its option for a low-key celebration.

He said, “Low key celebration has nothing to do with whether we’re not doing well. Economic times are hard, we are looking at it not just at the national level but also as a family. We have not invited world leaders. During the inauguration of the President, 53 world leaders were invited, so we have not invited any world leader.

“As you are aware, the President has given his approval for this 63rd anniversary to be low-key in line with the present economic realities. The theme of the anniversary is “Nigeria @ 63, Renewed Hope for Unity & Prosperity.”

Speaking on national interest, he said, “We have all agreed to live in a peaceful, united, prosperous country, despite our diversity. Without these, no nation can move forward. Government is making sure our national interest is not undermined.”

According to him, the celebration is particularly important at this time having witnessed an unbroken democratic record since 1999 as well as the seamless, successful and peaceful presidential transition programme from one government to another.

The SGF said, “Despite political tremors and a wave of coups in some parts of the ECOWAS sub-region, Nigerians have fully embraced democracy with its core values and practices as the best form of governance. Democracy affords the citizens the opportunity through elective structures and processes to effectively participate in the affairs of their country.

“The relationship between the people and government in representative democracy is symbiotic: while the citizens support the government, the government provides security, protects, and enhances their interests.

“The government is fully aware of the economic challenges that Nigerians are confronted with since the removal of the fuel subsidy as well as the impact of the global economic downturn. The government is working assiduously to provide the necessary palliatives so as to mitigate such challenges and also the provision of buses to ease hardship on transportation among others. At the same time, the government is engaging with labour in order to address areas of concern for the well-being of all Nigerian workers and Nigerians generally.

“It is for this reason that this government led by His Excellency, Sen. Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, is anchoring on the Renewed Hope Agenda which will improve food security; guarantee end to poverty; improve security; economic growth and job creation; access to capital; improve the playing field on which people and particularly companies operate; respect for the rule of law; and fight against corruption.

Among the programmes lines up for the event included anniversary symposium/public Lecture, on Thursday, September 28, 2023 at State house Conference Center @ 10 am; lecture on Friday September 29 2023 at the National Mosque Conference Center by 10 am and Juma’at Prayer at the National Mosque at 1pm.

Akume also announced presidential broadcast on Sunday, October 12023 at 7am; inter-denominational church service on Sunday, October 1, 2023 at the National Christian Center at 10:00 am and military parade on Monday October 2 2023 at the Presidential Villa, at 9am.

“I therefore call on you as media professionals and patriots to support this administration and build a workable partnership in order to transform our country into the land of our dream. Also, I count on you to publicise activities lined up to mark Nigeria’s 63rd Independence anniversary”, he said.

Impeachment: Ondo Speaker Cries Out After Finding ‘Juju’ At Residence

by Folarin Kehinde September 25, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Speaker of Ondo State House of Assembly, Mr Olamide Oladiji, has raised the alarm after discovering an African magic ‘juju’ in front of his official residence.

Oladiji told newsmen on Monday in Akure, that the lawmakers at the House had been having sleepless nights since they commenced the impeachment process against the state deputy governor, Mr Lucky Ayedatiwa.

“Early this morning, we discovered that a sacrifice was placed in the lodge. Aside from that, I have been receiving strange calls from strange people threatening my life and other members.

“l am using the medium to tell the world that my life is under threat. I call on the security operatives to checkmate these people who have been threatening my life and other members.

“This threat started since the day we began the impeachment process. I have already reported to NSCDC among other security agencies,” he stated.

Oladiji said that the House has also been unable to serve the impeachment notice on Ayedatiwa since last week.

He said, however, said that the House had secured a court affidavit to serve the deputy governor the letter through other means.

Oladiji said that all the 26 lawmakers in the House had appended their signature on the petition for the impeachment of the deputy governor.

The speaker debunked insinuation that the lawmakers collected N5 million each to initiate the impeachment process.

He said that the 10th assembly under his watch would not compromise. (NAN)

Akwa-Ibom: ‘I’m Being Threatened To Share Money Or Risk Second Term’ Gov. Eno cries out

by Folarin Kehinde September 25, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

Governor Umo Eno of Akwa Ibom State says he has found himself in a challenging position, contending with formidable pressure and threats within the State’s political sphere.

Leading reporters gathered that the threats center around the request to distribute funds among the political class or face the potential loss of his opportunity for a second term in office.

While speaking with newsmen in Uyo, Eno expressed his determination to stay focused on a crucial mission—to address the pressing issues that ordinary citizens face, especially those residing in rural areas.

He underlined this commitment by referencing the ‘Arise Agenda’, a blueprint that outlines his administration’s strategies for rural development programs and initiatives aimed at improving the lives of the people.

His words: “I have received a lot of threats from the political class that I won’t do a second term.

“I am putting money in rural development because a good first term is better than a useless second term.

“I don’t want to put more money in one person’s hands to the detriment of the 7.9 million population.”

Eno however called on politicians to give him time till December to put the structure of governance on the right track in the State.

Nigeria @ 63: No world leader invited, says FG

“Cement may cost N9,000 per bag” – Manufacturers warn Tinubu’s govt on concrete roads

by Folarin Kehinde September 25, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Cement Producers Association of Nigeria has cautioned that the ongoing plan of the federal government to introduce concrete roads will raise the price of cement to N9,000 per bag from the current price of N5,000.

The association also urged the Tinubu administration to permanently address the perennial cement price hike problem by facilitating larger participation in the cement industry, noting that Nigerians have no business buying cement for more than N5, 600 per bag.

In a statement jointly signed by the national chairman, Prince David Iweta and secretary Chief Reagan Ufomba, on Sunday, the association commended the works minister’s position on cement-made roads but warned of dire consequences, if the supply end is not addressed properly.

The cement producers urged the government to lay more emphasis on road design that allows both cement technology and asphalt pavement to run concurrently and provide ample time for a smooth transition that allows contractors to invest in commensurate and requisite equipment and retooling.

“Our findings from various parts of the country show that cement sells for as high as N6000 per bag in the rainy season. Our prediction is that it will sell for over N9,000 per bag in the dry season, especially with the pronouncement of the Honourable Minister of Works on cement technology and the marching order on housing by Mr President if the government does not take proactive steps,” the statement said.

“While we commend the Honourable Minister’s position on cement-made roads, we warn of the dire consequences if the supply end is not properly addressed. In fact, it would amount to dereliction of duty not to intervene. And the time is now.

“To do otherwise is to continue in a worsening pipe dream that prices would suddenly drop on this essential input that will continue to drain the purse of Nigerians, render them homeless, encourage chaos between demand and supply, and worsen the infrastructure deficit it sets out to cure, and lead to an unprecedented price hike.

“We also call on the Honourable Minister of Works to lay more emphasis on the design criteria of roads that allow both cement technology and Asphalt pavement to run concurrently, in turn, will provide ample time for a smooth transition that allows contractors to invest in commensurate and requisite equipment and retooling.

“We must also as a nation regulate static and dynamic load traffic by introducing weighbridges at access points on our highways. Working in sync with contractors, and allied Ministries of Trade and Investment, Transport, Environment and Finance on realistic policy on cement is most desirable at this critical time.”

The cement manufacturers further requested the government to conclude the backward integration policy of the late Yar’adua administration that was already bringing availability and affordability of cement in the country.

“There has been so much comment on cement and cement pricing of late. What our nation needs is cement that is available and affordable. And this cannot be achieved by mere wishes, faulty policies and programmes, without breaking the chain of monopoly and favouritisms. Nigerians are tired of waiting for a downturn in the price of cement and for decent and affordable housing.

“We call on the Tinubu government to permanently solve this perennial cement price hike problem by expanding participation in the sector with companies who have verifiable evidence of local investment, including greenfield licenses and quarrying. As a matter of fact, we call on the government to more specifically conclude the backward integration policy of the late Yar’adua administration which was already bearing availability and affordability fruits.

“As patriots, it is our view that the government reintroduces backward integration policy and the conclusion of old ones. Consequently, the government cannot be seen to approbate and reprobate by deregulating issues of petroleum products and foreign exchange on one hand and regulating on pricing of cement, essential goods and services on another. There is a need for policy harmonisation and convergence between fiscal and monetary policies.

“Finally, we call on the government to urgently intervene in the foreign exchange market, intervene in restructuring bad loans of manufacturers, and review palliative modules. The cry for elusive FDI will be drastically reduced if all manufacturing concerns are revived. The government must be decisive in the kind of economic policies it intends to foist on the people,” the statement concluded.
