Afe Babalola Empowers Outstanding Ekiti Farmers with N11.2m

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 9, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Founder of the Afe Babalola University, Ado-Ekiti (ABUAD), Aare Afe Babalola has presented the  sum of N11,200,000 as empowerment for some farmers found to be most outstanding   across the 16 Local Government Areas of the state.

The legal icon and foremost eduprenueur presented the cheques in the Institution during the weekend at the 9th edition of the grand finale of Aare Afe Babalola Agric Expo (ABAEX), now Afe Annual Farmers Exhibition (AAFEX).

Speaking with journalists, Afe Babalola said the goal of the Initiative, since its inception in 2014, is to revive the interest of the masses, educated folks, the rich, the academics, and others to invest in agriculture.

The legal icon noted that technology has come to stay in the contemporary world, hence the need for farmers to familiarise themselves with modern technologies for mass production of farm produce for the sustainability of food security.

To achieve this, he called on the administration of Governor Biodun Oyebanji of Ekiti state to assist and advise the 16 local government areas in the state to purchase Agricultural implements for farmers to hire.

He also tasked federal government to advise Bank of Industry and Bank of Agriculture to assist farmer cooperative societies.

In his words: “How many of us can buy this modern equipment? The modern equipment enable rich and highly educated people to engage in large scale modern agriculture, where as in Nigeria, we continue to use cutlasses and hoes, thereby making farmers in Nigeria to continue to use cutlasses and hoes, thereby engaging in small scale farming.

“State governments should assist and advise local government to purchase Agricultural implements for farmers to hire.

“We must put pressure on government to advise Bank of Industry, and Bank of Agriculture to assist farmer cooperative societies.

“The federal government should please encourage banks to give soft loans to Agric cooperative societies.

“Farmers must form cooperative societies and use their lands as security to obtain soft loans from Bank of Agriculture. The said cooperative societies can then buy modern agricultural implements which farmers can hire to enable them engage in modern agriculture.”

Giving the breakdown of the cash prizes, each LGA in Ekiti state received total sum of N575,000, which was shared among five winners, and amounted to N9.2 million across the 16 LGs.

Meanwhile, another N2 million was presented to the overall best farmer of the year 2023, Agbemuko Abiodun Olasebikan from Ijero LG, for his outstanding performance and contribution to the agricultural sector.

Other highlights include the empowerment of 32 youths on entrepreneurial skills, presentation of awards to notable individuals, where  Afe Babalola was recognised  as an “Outstanding Farmer” for his contribution to agrarian and agroforestry farming.

In his goodwill message, the representative of Nigerian National Commission for UNESCO, Abuja, Dr Olagunju Idowu hailed Afe Babalola’s giant strides towards the realisation of Social Development Goals (SDG) 2030.

He commended the legal icon for being in the forefront of eradicating hunger in Ekiti State, adding that the state has been outstanding in the whole Africa for its quest towards the eradication of hunger.

He thereby, urged the Nigerian youths to invest in agriculture as white collar jobs are no longer rampant in the country.

President Tinubu’s Son, Seyi and Friends Travel In Presidential Jet To Watch Polo Tournament In Kano, Welcomed By State Government Officials

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 9, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Some Nigerians have condemned the use of a jet in the presidential fleet by President Bola Tinubu’s son, Seyi, to go on a private trip to Kano State to watch a polo tournament.

Polo is a ball game played on horseback, a traditional field sport and one of the world’s oldest known team sports, but is the exclusive reserve of the rich and members of the ruling class in Nigeria.

Leading Reporters learnt that Seyi embarked on the trip along with his friends on Sunday to watch a polo tournament in Kano and they were welcomed on arrival to the ancient city by the state government official

Leading Reporters learnt that Seyi Tinubu was likely attending the finals of the 2023 NPA Kano International Polo Tournament scheduled for Sunday at the Usman Dantata Polo Ground in Kano.

The Dangote Cup final between Golden Ranch and Agad/Rumbu was started by 3.30 pm on Sunday while the Muhammadu Sanusi Cup final between the ‘winners’ and the ‘rest of the team’ was scheduled for 4.30 pm.

Seyi Tinubu’s reckless private trip using taxpayers’ money amid hardship in Nigeria mirrors what happened in January 2020 when then-President Muhammadu Buhari’s daughter, Hanan, took a private photography trip to Bauchi State on a presidential jet.

Jaafar Jaafar, a Nigerian journalist from Kano State and the founder of Daily Nigerian, wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) handle, “Here’s Tinubu’s golden child, Seyi, traveling in a presidential jet to watch polo in Kano. But this trend did not start today.

“Buhari set the bad example when he allowed his daughter Hanan to travel in a presidential jet for a photo tour in Bauchi. Even if our laws are vague on this, one thing is clear. This is an offence to the moral code of leadership.”

Another user, @belloinuwa, who also spoke on the misuse of special forces units in the country said, “What about the misuse of a special forces unit as his bodyguards? See them in the pictures.

“The other day he went skateboarding in Abuja with them running by his side. This is just a continuation of the culture of impunity from the previous government, perhaps on an even grander scale this time.”

Another X user, @HGBashar wrote, “Buhari merely sought the title of ‘President’ without understanding or respecting the sanctity of the office.

“The audacity to let his daughter, Hanan, use a presidential jet for a mere photo tour in Bauchi was the beginning of this mockery. Now we see Tinubu’s protege, Seyi, hopping on the same jet for a polo match in Kano.

“It’s not just about the laws, it’s about ethics, morals, and respect for the position. Our leaders must do more than just occupy an office; they must uphold its dignity.”

Also, @EIderstateman said, “Gone are those days when public employees could confront political leaders without fear or favour and be reprimanded if they disregarded established processes, norms, and regulations. My Dad once sent a bill to Sir Ahmadu Bello for using an official plane for an unofficial trip.”

Seyi Tinubu in November 2022 in the build-up to the 2023 general elections attracted public outrage when he flew to Kano in a private jet to lead a rally in support of his father in the presidential election.

A former House of Representatives member who represented Idah Federal Constituency in Kogi State, Hon. Ismail Inah Hussein, popularly known as Soul Lover, has dumped the Peoples Democratic Party for the All Progressives Congress, along with hundreds of supporters.

Inah, who was a dedicated member of the ruling PDP in Kogi state attributed his decision to join the APC to his desire to contribute to the development of Kogi State and the country as a whole.

BREAKING: Atiku finally approaches Supreme Court, files fresh evidence against Tinubu’s victory

by Folarin Kehinde October 7, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Atiku Abubakar, has finally filed fresh evidence at the Supreme Court of Nigeria against the qualifications of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the February 25, 2023 presidential election.

Atiku, a former Vice President, said in the fresh evidence that he is categorically and authoritatively asserting that the Diploma Certificate of the Chicago State University (CSU) used by Tinubu to secure qualifications for participation in the election is fake, having been allegedly forged.

In a motion on notice filed by his legal team headed by Chris Uche SAN, Atiku asked the Supreme Court to invoke its Order 2 Rule 12 of 1985 to admit the fresh evidence of certificate forgery and perjury in support of his pending appeal before the Court to do substantial justice to his case.

Atiku, in the motion, marked SC/CV/935/2023, prayed the Apex Court to grant him leave to produce the additional evidence and for the Court to receive the fresh evidence from him.

Respondents in the motion are the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC; Bola Ahmed Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress, APC, as 1st to 3rd respectively.

The motion is predicated on several grounds but mainly on the release of academic records of Tinubu, evidence of the Registrar of the Chicago State University before a United States of America Court and the deposition of the same witness in respect of the Diploma Certificate President Tinubu presented to INEC for the purpose of eligibility for the election.

Other grounds in the motion are that “The 2nd Respondent (Tinubu) was not qualified at the time of the election to contest the election as required by Section 137 (1) (j) of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).

“Based on facts available to the Appellants/Applicants (Atiku) at the time of filing their Petition, the 1st Appellar Applicant (Atiku Abubakar,) through his United States of American lawyers, Alexander de Cmmont and Argela M. Liu of the law firm of Dechert LLP o11900 K Street, NW, Washington DC 20006-1110, unsuccessfully applied to Chicago State University for the release of copies of the academic records of the 2nd Respondent.

“Given the strict privacy laws in the jurisdiction of Chicago State University, the request for the release of the academic records and certificate issued to the 2nd Respondent could not be granted without an order of court and for the purpose of use in pending court proceedings.

“The 1st Applicant through his said US-based Attomeys thereupon brought an action in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois -In rc: Application of Atiku Abubakar for an Order Directing Discovery from Chicago State University Case No. 23-CV-05099 for an order for the production of documents and testimony for use in a proceeding in a foreign court, seeking documents and testimony from Chicago State University concerning the authenticity and origin of documents purporting to be the educational records of the 2nd Respondent, Bola A. Tinubu.

“The 2nd Respondent (Tinubu) applied and was joined in the matter as an Intervenor, vehemently opposed the application.

BREAKING: ‘We are ready for dialogue with Nigerian Government’ IPOB declares

by Folarin Kehinde October 7, 2023
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) has called for peaceful negotiations with the Nigerian government

LEADING REPORTERS gathered that the separatist group in Nigeria, on Saturday, requested a peaceful exit of Biafra from Nigeria through a United Nations-supervised referendum.

IPOB spokesperson Emma Powerful said in a press statement that the group has lost over 5,000 members and properties worth over $1 billion as a result of the extreme use of force by the Nigerian security forces.

“IPOB stands for peace. We stand for dialogue, and we stand for discussions. The cardinal rule under which IPOB was formed is to lead the way to a peaceful separation of Biafra from Nigeria,” Powerful said.

The statement read, “We the global family and movement of IPOB wish to reiterate once again that IPOB remains peaceful and open for negotiations and dialogue on the peaceful exit of Biafra from Nigeria through a UN-supervised Referendum.

“IPOB’s peaceful agitation for Biafra Independence started in 2012. Never has IPOB been associated with violence or criminality in all our years of rallies and protests. Nevertheless, the Federal Government, through its security forces, has levied war against IPOB. Our members have been brutally attacked while on a peaceful protest by the Nigerian security forces at many locations in Biafra Land.

“As a result of these unwarranted attacks, many IPOB members have been murdered in cold blood, some have been permanently handicapped, some forcefully taken away by the security forces whereas some are still illegally detained in various detention facilities across Nigeria.

“Many IPOB members and sympathisers have had their houses and businesses burnt by the Nigeria security forces. IPOB has lost over 5,000 members with properties worth over $1bn as a result of the extreme use of force by the Nigeria Security Forces. Irrespective of all the provocations, IPOB has never retaliated nor have we taken up arms against the Nigerian State.

“IPOB stands for peace. We stand for dialogue, and we stand for discussions. The cardinal rule under which IPOB was formed is to lead the way to a peaceful separation of Biafra from Nigeria. Biafra and Nigeria are two different nations.

“The events from 1948 to 2023 have shown that it is practically impossible for Biafra and Nigeria to coexist as one nation. IPOB has been calling on the Nigeria State for discussions on a peaceful referendum date, but the Nigeria State always returns the peaceful call with violent suppression.

“We have always maintained that self-determination is our inalienable right according to the UN laws.”
