President Bola Tinubu has extended hands of fellowship to Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi, presidential candidates of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, and Labour Party, LP, following their defeat at the Supreme Court.

Leading reporters gathered that the Supreme Court on Thursday dismissed appeals filed by Atiku and Obi against Tinubu’s election.

Reacting, Tinubu said his victory at the Supreme Court has further energised and strengthened his commitment to serve Nigerians of all political persuasions, tribes and faiths with honour and total respect.

The President reacted to the judgement in a statement titled: ‘It is time for us to build our great nation together’.

In a surprising turn of events, Governor Duoye Diri of Bayelsa state, a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has extended his congratulations to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu following the Supreme Court’s verdict affirming the President’s electoral victory.

This unexpected move occurred at the Presidential Villa, where Governor Diri joined high-ranking All Progressives Congress (APC) members to acknowledge President Tinubu’s win.

Governor Diri was spotted congratulating the president in a video shared on social media by Arise TV.

The television station noted that the presidential villa is abuzz with activities as political associates, appointees, and well-wishers of President Tinubu converge at the seat of power to extend their congratulations.

Governor Diri’s gesture comes as a surprise as he was one of the frontline PDP members who supported Atiku during the presidential election.

Interestingly, the governor is preparing for an election next month, while his APC opponent, Timipre Sylva, has been disqualified by the electoral commission following a court verdict.

Operatives of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) have impounded over 100 private and commercial vehicles operating illegal parking/garages on across the state.

The state government had last week given a 7-day vacation order to drivers operating on bridges across the state.

The Special Adviser to the Governor on Transportation, Sola Giwa, who led the enforcement operations, said the exercise was carried out following the expiration of the vacation order.

According to Giwa, the enforcement operation was aimed at removing every infraction impeding the free flow of traffic on bridges in the state.

He said the vehicles were impounded at Ejalonibu, Obalende, Apongbon Ebute-Ero, and Idumota (Cater) bridges on Lagos Island.

Giwa described the activities of the drivers as nauseating, adding that they constitute a public nuisance by operating illegal parking/garages on bridges, thereby causing avoidable traffic gridlock and inconveniencing other road users.

“The enforcement operations would be a continuous exercise until zero tolerance on activities of these commercial bus drivers operating illegal parking/garages on top bridges is achieved in line with the ‘Theme+’ agenda of the present administration,” a statement by the Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of LASTMA, Adebayo Taofiq, on Thursday, quoted him as saying.

“We would continue to ensure free flow of traffic movement by scaling up our enforcement and clampdown operations on these stubborn private/commercial bus drivers.”

The special adviser maintained that the activities of the bus drivers are contrary to provisions of the Lagos State Transport Sector Reform Law, 2018.

He, however, informed that the drivers of impounded vehicles would be prosecuted.

TASUED student protest serial rape and insecurity in hostels.

Students of Tai Solarin University Of Education, Ijagun, Ijebu-Ode, have taken to the streets to protest the rising case of insecurity ravaging the student communities in the early hours of Thursday.

Leading Reporters reports that some suspected burglars went to a hostel, carted away valuables, transferred money from the occupants’ bank accounts, and allegedly raped four students on Tuesday. This caused pandemonium in the students’ community, and the government promised to apprehend the culprits.

The Students’ Union led the ‘walk against insecurity and rape’ to lend their voices to the security situation, create awareness about the dangers of rape, and show solidarity with the victims of the unfortunate event.

During the peaceful walk, students bore placards with inscriptions such as ‘Ijagun needs security,’ ‘Students’ lives matter,’ ‘Don’t molest girls,’ ‘Say No To Rape,’ ‘Please save us from rapists,’ ‘Stop gender violence,’ among others.

Leading Reporters gathered that the security situation had subjected the students to fear as they now have to sleep and walk in groups to forestall any attack.

The Students’ Union President, Akinjetan Emmanuel, said the stand of the leadership of the Union is to have a secured students’ community and that “We want security personnel deployed to the University community, and we also plead for the resuscitation of the deserted police station at Abapawa for the purpose of safety.”

He stated, “Hopefully, the deputy governor helps us achieve everything tabled to her on Tuesday at the meeting.”

A student, Tofunmi Oranaiye, appealed to the Ogun State Government to provide adequate security for the school community.

“The robbery and rape operation is not happening to students for the first time, and the similar incident that happened before this at Imaweje community died down; we haven’t heard any progress on the case.

“We are no longer safe; even in my hostel, we are always vigilant. The nearest police station is at Igbeba, which is far from the school. There can’t be an emergency; you expect the cops to arrest the situation in a few minutes.

“The Government really needs to look into this. I am paying house rent, and I can’t even read in peace” ” she said.

Another student, Olarenwaju Daniel, said the higher authorities should enhance security measures to strengthen security protocols on and off campus.

“They should work closely with local security men and this may include increased patrol presence, improved surveillance systems, and stricter access control measures.”

A student who spoke on condition of anonymity said, “Cultism leads to various menaces in our environment. The state government should deploy men of the Nigeria Police Force and other necessary security agencies to our institutions in Ogun State.”

The Supreme Court has dismissed the application by Atiku Abubakar, the presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, to admit fresh evidence in his appeal against President Bola Tinubu for lack of jurisdiction.

The apex court said Atiku’s petition was a friendly joke. It insisted that the petition could not be granted.

DAILY POST reported that Atiku had sought the leave of the apex court to present fresh evidence of forgery against Tinubu.

He pleaded with the court to look into the matter because of its constitutional and democratic implications.

The fresh evidence Atiku sought to tender was the academic records of Tinubu, which were handed over to him by the Chicago State University (CSU) on October 2.

The former Vice President had informed the court that the fresh evidence was crucial to his appeal, adding that it has inherent jurisdiction to entertain and decide on the application.

However, the Supreme Court said it has no jurisdiction to entertain the fresh evidence as the time limit allowed by the constitution has elapsed.

At the time of filing this report, the judgment was still ongoing.

As more Nigerians leave the country for better opportunities abroad, Sweden is introducing a new model to reduce the work permit application time for highly skilled workers outside the European Union, including Nigeria.

According to a statement by the Swedish Migration Agency, once the new model is implemented, a complete application for a work permit for highly qualified workers will receive a decision within 30 days.

“Helping these employers to make a complete application will reduce the processing time. It will be easier for the employer to contact us and get support in the process.

“The new model means a greater focus on the employer’s ability to bring highly qualified workers to Sweden. New international recruitment units will exclusively handle and provide service to the employers who recruit this group,” Mikael Ribbenvik, director general of the agency, said.

According to analysts at KMPG Sweden, the new model, which may be introduced at the end of the year, aims to bring flexibility and efficiency to businesses in planning to meet their labour needs.

“When implemented, the old certification scheme was only intended for about 20 big companies that had a recurring need to employ large numbers of individuals outside of the EU.

“Today, there are, according to the migration agency, far too many companies (640 mentioned during the press conference) that have been included in the certification process, and the authority has been unable to meet the target processing times of 10/20 days for the past 18 months.

“The certification scheme has lost its original purpose and will now be replaced with a new system, based on four categories,” they said.

Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri on Wednesday, said he is not disposed to celebrating his upcoming birthday on 27th October while his people are still facing challenges.

The Governor said this in a press statement through Humwashi Wonosikou, his Chief Press Secretary, noting that he is sensitive to the hardships faced by the people as they grapple with the economic effects of the policy direction of the federal government.

He rather requested that prayers be said on Friday in Mosques and in Churches on Sunday for peace and harmony in the land amid the challenges of fuel subsidy removal.
