NNPP supporters lit bonfires in Kano State on Wednesday, November 22, 2023 to protest Governor Abba Yusuf’s sacking by the appellate court.

This was as police dispersed protesters along the Dan Agundi area of the state on Wednesday.

The fresh protests followed the Certified True Copy of the judgement which appeared in public domain and seemed contrary to the verdict of the appellate court.

Some of the protesters said they were ready to die as they demanded justice.

Police authorities in Kano had vowed to clamp down on any group protesting in the state following the sacking of the governor.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) had in March 2023 declared Yusuf of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) as the winner of the poll but the state governorship election petitions tribunal sacked him in September.

Months after the development, the Court of Appeal affirmed the decision. It held that Yusuf was not in the NNPP’s register, making him unqualified to contest the election. The court declared the All Progressives Congress (APC)’s Nasiru Gawuna as the winner of the poll in a move that has caused tensions in the North-West state.

In the last week, the appellate court sacked three governors that INEC declared as winners in the March 2023 poll. All the three governors sacked by the appellate court are in opposition parties.

In Zamfara, the appellate court sacked Governor Dauda Lawal of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) when it declared the poll inconclusive about eight months later. The court ordered INEC to conduct a fresh election in three local government areas of the state. PDP’s Lawal and APC’s Bello Matawalle are the major contenders in the race.

On Sunday, the appellate court sacked PDP’s Caleb Mutfwang in Plateau State and ordered INEC to issue a Certificate of Return to APC’s Nentawe Goshwe. The court held that the party violated the court order that a valid congress be conducted in the 17 local government areas of that state.

President Bola Tinubu’s government has assured Nigerians of stable electricity supply by the first quarter of the year 2024.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Maitama Tuggar, gave this assurance in an interview on ChannelsTV.

“In the coming year, by the first half of next year (2024), there will be a remarkable improvement in the electricity supply in Nigeria,” Tuggar said.

So, it’s all interconnected, and one does not stop the other from happening,” he added.

Leading reporter had earlier reported that the country has, in recent times, recorded numerous cases of nationwide blackouts due to collapse of the national grid, vandalism and others.

The Appeal Court sitting in Lagos on Wednesday affirmed the election of Bassey Otu as the governor of Cross River State.

The appellate court affirmed the decision of the Election Petition Tribunal of September 26 which upheld the election of Otu, of the All Progressives Congress, APC, and his deputy, Peter Odey.

Otu was declared winner of the governorship poll by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, having polled a total of 258,619 votes winning in 15 of the 18 local governments of the state, to defeat his closest rival, Senator Sandy Onor of the PDP, who polled 179,636 votes.

Expressing happiness at the confirmation of his victory, Otu expressed a hand of fellowship to his main challenger, Onor.

The governor said he was confident of the outcome of the appeal, knowing that the electorate had massively voted for him during the March 18 governorship election.

Otu promised to serve the state and move forward with his People First Agenda.

He urged the opposition to accept the verdict in good faith and join hands with his administration in moving the state forward.

“The ruling of the Court of Appeal today is a welcome development and affirms that we were overwhelmingly voted in by the people on March 18, 2023.

“This ruling should bring an end to litigation on the outcome of the governorship election.

“For those in the opposition, especially my brother, Prof. Sandy Onor, I once again offer you a hand of friendship. Come and join my administration so that together we can move our state forward and bring about the dividends of democracy.”

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has appointed the newly sworn-in Kogi lawmaker, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, as the chairman of Senate Committee on Local Content, as well as vice chairman of the Senate Committee on Steel.

The Senate president also named 14 other Senators as chairmen and vice chairmen of various Standing Committees of the Senate.

The Solid Minerals Development Committee is under the chairmanship of Sampson Ekong just as Osita Ngwu is the Vice Chairman of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC).

Senator Sunday Katung is the Vice Chairman of the Establishment and Public Service Committee while Victor Umeh is the Vice Chairman of the Committee on Housing.

The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) has said that the price of the Household Kerosene (HHK) rose by 25.18% in one year.

This was contained in a document tagged: “Household Kerosene (HHK) Price Watch October 2023” which was released on Tuesday, November 21.

The NBS noted that the price of kerosene soared from N1,041 in October 2022 to N1,303.16 in October 2023.

The national data hub also noted that on a month-on-month basis, the price from by 0.32% from the N1,299.03 recorded on September 2023.

“The average retail price per litre of Household Kerosene (HHK) paid by consumers in October 2023 was N1,303.16, indicating an increase of 0.32% compared to N1,299.03 recorded in September 2023,” the NBS said.

“On a year-on-year basis, the average retail price per litre of the product rose by 25.18% from N1,041.05 in October 2022.”

The document noted that on state profile analysis, the highest average price per litre in October 2023 was recorded in Adamawa with N1,676.19, followed by Abia with N1,555.21 and Abuja with N1,541.67. On the other hand, the lowest price was recorded in Kwara with N1,034.29, followed by Kebbi with N1,133.33 and Enugu with N1,134.52.

It added that analysis by zone showed that the South-East recorded the highest average retail price per litre of Household Kerosene with N1,404.49, followed by the North-East with N1,371.03, while the North-West recorded the lowest with N1,221.22.

NBS said the average retail price per gallon of Household Kerosene paid by consumers in October 2023 was N4,581.89, showing an increase of 4.63% from N4,379.31 in September 2023.

The document said on a year-on-year basis, this increased by 30.28% from N3,516.87 in October 2022. On state profile analysis, Taraba recorded the highest average retail price per gallon of Household Kerosene with N5,500.00, followed by Lagos with N5,484.38 and Adamawa with N5,214.29.

On the other hand, according to NBS, Delta recorded the lowest price with N3,108.33, followed by Rivers and Ogun with N3,860.00 and N3,900.00 respectively.

It also noted that analysis by zone showed that the North-East recorded the highest average retail price per gallon of Household Kerosene with N5,096.83, followed by the North West with N4,773.87, while the South-South recorded the lowest with N4,017.76.

The minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike on Tuesday, November 21, disclosed that he has saved N110 billion for the Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) since he assumed office.

Wike revealed this while holding a meeting with estate developers in Abuja.

The minister expressed displeasure over the rate at which fake Certificate of Occupancy (C of O) is being given through the land process.

He added that bad eggs in the administration also said to get a C of O, N5 million would be paid.

The minister also disclosed that he would seek the permission of President Bola Tinubu to add a National Identification Number (NIN) to any C of O that would be given by his administration.

The Federal Government through the Ministry of Solid Minerals Development has revoked 1,633 minerals titles previously given to non-complying mining companies.

The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, announced this during a press briefing on Tuesday in Abuja.

He said the licenses of these mineral title holders were revoked due to failure to pay mandatory annual service fees of N1,500 per cadastral unit.

He said, “The Mining Cadastre Office has recommended the revocation of 1,633 mineral titles as follows: Exploration Licence, 536; Quarry Licence, 279; Small Scale Mining Licence, 787 and Mining Lease, 31.

In line with the powers conferred on me by the NMMA 2007, Section 5 (a), I have approved the revocation of the 1,633 titles.”
