Presidency Dismisses Empty Booth Saga At TICAD19 Japan

by Nelson Ugwuagbo August 21, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Presidency has refuted reports suggesting that Nigeria had an empty stand at the ongoing 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Yokohama, Japan.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga clarified that President Bola Tinubu’s delegation is attending the summit for high-level engagements, not for trade exhibitions.

According to him, the Nigerian team is concentrating on securing strategic partnerships in key sectors, including power, industry, and agriculture.

The clarification followed viral photos on social media showing an empty space marked “Nigeria,” which drew criticism from the public. Onanuga, however, described the reports as misleading.

“Nigeria is not participating as a trade exhibitor,” he said, adding that while some of the concerns were driven by patriotism, they reflected a misunderstanding of the country’s actual objectives at TICAD9.

Kano Govt To Sponsor Wedding For Repentant Bandits

by Nelson Ugwuagbo August 21, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Kano State Hisbah Board has unveiled plans to sponsor the weddings of repentant bandits as part of the government’s ongoing reintegration efforts.

Commander-General of Hisbah, Sheikh Aminu Ibrahim Daurawa, disclosed this development after more than 1,000 youths surrendered their weapons and publicly renounced violence.

According to him, the initiative aligns with Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s programme aimed at helping youths who have abandoned crime to build stable and decent lives.

“This programme is part of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf’s initiative to support youths who have turned away from crime and want to live a decent life,” Sheikh Daurawa said, while urging the youths to ensure their repentance was genuine. He also appealed to others still engaged in violence to embrace the opportunity.

At the event held at the Police Headquarters in Bompai, Governor Yusuf—represented by the Commissioner for Information and Internal Affairs, Ibrahim Abdullahi Waiya—stated that the police screening exercise marked the first stage of rehabilitation.

“After this, the NDLEA will also screen the youths to confirm the sincerity of their repentance,” the governor noted.

7,000 Nigerians stranded in Libya – NiDCOM

by Folarin Kehinde August 21, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, has revealed that approximately 7,000 Nigerian migrants are currently stranded in Libya. Newspaper subscription bundles

Dabiri-Erewa stated this on Tuesday night during the official launch of the International Organisation for Migration Strategic Plan for Nigeria (2025–2027), held in Abuja.

She said: “As we speak, 7,000 Nigerians are stranded in Libya. In 2025, people still travel through the desert to die.”

MEANWHILE, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) Nigeria has ranked Nigeria among the highest in the rate of irregular migration, saying that 70,000 irregular migrants have been returned to the country since it started operation in Nigeria in 2001.

Deputy Director-General, Operations at IOM, Ugochi Florence Daniels, revealed this when she paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Bianca Odumegwu-Ojukwu, at her office in Abuja.

However, a statement, signed by Special Assistant on Communication and New Media, Office of the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Magnus Eze, quoted Daniels as saying that about 27,000 of them had been reintegrated into the society through its Assisted Voluntary Return and Reintegration Programme (AVRR) within the period.

She gave reassurance that the organisation would be dedicated to promoting humane and orderly migration for all migrants, as well as accelerating the transformative initiatives to reach the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including the Africa Union’s Agenda 2063.

Also speaking, Odumegwu-Ojukwu reiterated the Federal Government’s readiness to forge better collaboration with IOM in tackling the migration crisis, especially irregular migration.

She blamed the increasing spate of irregular migration, especially among the youths, on the myth of pursuing ‘greener pasture’ abroad, saying that the government sustained a campaign to dispel the myth.

The minister, therefore, acknowledged the longstanding cooperation between Nigeria and IOM in addressing concerns relating to vulnerable migrants and Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs), while applauding IOM’s strategic direction to save lives, and facilitate pathways for regular migration.

Also, in view of the financial challenges currently facing the Organisation, the minister stressed the need to initiate and execute programmes that address the existential needs of persons of concern to IOM in line with national priorities.

She urged the Organisation to ensure harmonisation of activities with Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs) and other international organisations, advising the body to leverage its global status to engender novel financial partnership from non-traditional donors.

Edo State Ban Graduation Party for nursery, primary school pupils

by Folarin Kehinde August 20, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Edo State Government has introduced transformative reforms in the education sector, effective from the 2025/2026 academic session, aimed at enhancing stability, consistency, and quality learning across schools.

The state Ministry of Education announced a ban on graduation parties for nursery and primary school pupils, a mandatory entrepreneurship training program for junior secondary students, and a textbook reuse policy.

Under the new measures, graduation ceremonies will be limited to students completing Basic Education (Primary 1–JSS 3) and Senior Secondary 3 (SSS 3), with only modest celebrations permitted and prom parties explicitly prohibited.

The Ministry emphasized that pre-basic and primary school pupils will no longer be allowed to hold graduation ceremonies or parties, aiming to curb excessive celebrations and focus on academic priorities.

To promote sustainability, the textbook reuse policy allows younger siblings to use approved textbooks purchased by their older siblings, with each book remaining in use for at least four years before review.

This initiative is designed to reduce costs for families while maintaining educational standards.

In a significant move to equip students with practical skills, all JSS 3 students will undergo compulsory entrepreneurship training before graduation. Starting next academic session, every JSS 3 graduate will receive two certificates: the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE) and a Skills Acquisition Certificate in their chosen trade subject.

The Ministry stated that these reforms reflect the government’s commitment to producing academically proficient students who are also equipped with entrepreneurial skills to excel in a competitive global landscape.

“The measures are part of our ongoing efforts to ensure Edo students are not only academically sound but also practically skilled to thrive in today’s world,” the Ministry’s statement read.

The reforms have been hailed as a bold step toward fostering a more focused and skill-oriented education system in Edo State.

BREAKING: FG shuts down over 13 million social media accounts for offensive content

by Folarin Kehinde August 20, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The federal government has closed down about 13,597,057 social media accounts for offensive content and violations of the code of practice by users of social media platforms such as TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, and X, formerly known as Twitter.

The government action was contained in a Code of Practice 2024 Compliance Report submitted to the government by promoters of interactive computer service platforms such as Google, Microsoft and TikTok, among others.

The Code of Practice was issued jointly by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA), and the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC).

The 2024 report was titled “Code of Practice 2024 Compliance Report Highlights Social Media Platforms’ efforts on Online Harm Protection”

In a statement signed on Wednesday by the Director of Corporate Communications and Media Relations of NITDA, Hajiya Hadiza Umar, the government said a total of 58,909,112 offensive contents were taken down from various platforms.

Hajiya Umar, who commended Google, Microsoft, and TikTok for their continued compliance with the Code of Practice for Interactive Computer Service Platforms/Internet Intermediaries, also noted that 754,629 were “registered complaints.”

She added that 420,439 contents were removed and re-uploaded following appeals by users.

“The compliance reports provide valuable insights into the platforms’ efforts to address user safety concerns in line with the Code of Practice and the platforms’ community guidelines,” she said.

Hajiya Umar said, “The submission of these reports marks a significant step towards fostering a safer and responsible digital environment for Nigerian users.

“It also demonstrates the platforms’ commitment to ensuring a secure and trustworthy online environment for all.

“This achievement reflects the provisions of the Code of Practice, which mandates that large service platforms are registered in Nigeria and comply with relevant laws, including the fulfilment of their tax obligation, while reinforcing the commitment to online safety for Nigerians.

“While NITDA acknowledges these commendable efforts, we emphasise that building a safer digital space requires sustained collaboration and engagement among all stakeholders.

We remain committed to working with industry players, civil society, and regulatory partners to further strengthen user safety measures, enhance digital literacy, and promote trust and transparency in Nigeria’s digital ecosystem.

Rotimi Amaechi’s Presidential Ambition is Dead on Arrival – Wike

by Nelson Ugwuagbo August 20, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has dismissed the 2027 presidential ambition of former Minister of Transportation, Rotimi Amaechi, describing it as “dead on arrival.”

Wike, who spoke on Channels Television’s Politics Today, was reacting to Amaechi’s recent claims that he knows President Bola Tinubu’s weaknesses and could defeat him in a presidential contest.

According to Wike, Amaechi is fully aware that he stands no chance of clinching the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), where he is currently a member.

“He knows he won’t get the ticket,” Wike said. “I read that he said he knows the weaknesses of the president, so he knows how to defeat him. But he also knew those weaknesses in 2022, when the president defeated him mercilessly in the primary.”

Although there have been speculations about Amaechi’s interest in running for president under the ADC platform in 2027, Wike insisted the former Rivers State governor has no viable pathway to the presidency.

NAHCON officials arrested over diversion of 2025 Hajj Funds

by Folarin Kehinde August 20, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Commissioner of Policy, Personnel and Finance (PPMF) at the National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON), Aliu Abdulrazak, has been arrested and detained by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged fraud, Daily Trust can confirm.

Specifically, Abdulrazak, who was detained alongside the agency’s Director of Finance and Accounts (DFA), Aminu Y. Muhammed, was still in the custody of the anti-graft agency as of when filing this report last night.

It was learnt that both officials of NAHCON honoured an invitation extended to them by the commission, and they were later arrested after their failure to refund some funds allegedly diverted.

According to reports their arrest came amid a series of allegations bordering on the mismanagement of some funds during the conduct of the 2025 Hajj exercise.

The Forum of Chief Executives of State Muslim Pilgrims Welfare Boards/Agencies/Commissions recently described as “a total failure”, the Hajj operation under NAHCON chairman, Prof Abdullahi Saleh Usman (popularly known as Professor Pakistan).

The anti-graft agency had earlier this month quizzed other senior NAHCON officials, including Abdulmalik Diggi, Deputy Director (Accounts) and special adviser (General Services) to the Chairman/CEO.

Others were: Sirajo Usman Salisu, Deputy Director in the Chairman’s Office, and Barrister Nura Danladi, the commission’s Legal Adviser.

Credible sources revealed last night that Abdulrazak and Muhammed are also under investigation for their alleged involvement in another case of fund diversion dating back to the tenure of former chairman, Ahmad Jalal Arabi.

Alleged fraud: Court freezes ex-NNPCL boss Mele Kyari’s N661m in four bank accounts

by Folarin Kehinde August 19, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered a temporary freezing of four Jaiz Bank accounts linked to the former Group Managing Director (GMD) of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Mele Kolo Kyari, over allegations bordering on fraud.

Justice Emeka Nwite issued the order on Tuesday while ruling on an ex parte motion marked: FHC/ABJ/CS/1641 brought by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), which was argued by its lawyer, Ogechi Ujam.

Although the EFCC had urged the court to freeze the account for 60 days to enable it to conclude the ongoing investigation, Justice Nwite limited the tenure of the order to 30, which he said could be renewed if necessary.

Ujam had told the court that the temporary freezing order was necessary because the accounts were currently being investigated in a case involving the offences of conspiracy, abuse of office and money laundering pending the conclusion of the investigation.

She identified the accounts as Jaiz Bank account number: 0017922724 with account name: Mele Kyari; Jaiz Bank account number: 0017922724 with account name: Mele Kyari; Jaiz Bank account number: 0018575055 with account name: Guwori Community Dev. and Jaiz Bank account number: 0018575141 with account name: Guwori Community Development Foundation Flood Relief.

Ruling, Justice Nwite said, “I have listened to counsel to the applicant and gone through the affidavit evidence with the exhibits and written address attached.

“I find that this application is meritorious and it is hereby granted as prayed,” he said.

The judge then adjourned till September 23 for the EFCC to report on further developments.

The EFCC predicated its motion on three grounds, to the effect that the bank accounts are subject matters of ongoing investigation by the commission in relation to misappropriation of funds.

It stated that the preliminary investigation conducted thus far revealed that the bank accounts are linked to the suspect, who took advantage of the complainant to be a contract facilitator and launder proceeds of unlawful activities.

The EFCC added that there is a need to preserve the funds in the identified bank accounts pending the conclusion of the investigation and possible prosecution,” it added.

It stated, in a supporting affidavit, that officials of its Special Investigations (SIS) unit received a petition dated April 24 and filed by a group, the Guardian of Democracy and Rule of Law, against Kyari.

It said investigation so far revealed, among others, “that N661,464,601.50, which are suspected to be proceeds of unlawful activities, warehoused in four different accounts.

“These funds were traced to the suspect Mele Kolo Kyari, who is the former Group Managing Director (GMD) of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC).

“The suspect opened various accounts in Jaiz Bank, which have been used to receive suspicious inflows from NNPC and various oil companies that have dealings with NNPC.

“Bank records revealed that these accounts are controlled and managed by Mr Kyari through his family members who are acting as fronts.

“Further investigation revealed that the said transactions in the various accounts were disguised as payments for a purported book launch and activities of a non-governmental organisation (NGO).

“The commission (EFCC) has written to Jaiz Bank, where the four accounts referred to are domiciled, for the hard copies of the comprehensive account details.

“While responses of the banks are being awaited, the commission has written to post a no debit instruction on the accounts, which will only last for 72 hours.

“An order of this honourable court is necessary to freeze the said accounts clearly described in schedule 1 to the Motion paper for while investigation is ongoing.

“It is in the interest of justice to grant this application,” it said.

NCAA Bans Phone Use During Flights

by Folarin Kehinde August 19, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Following recent unpalatable airport incidents, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) has mandated that all passengers must switch off their phones during civil flights.

At a press conference in Abuja on Tuesday, NCAA Director General, Chris Najomo, said all phones must be switched off during the critical aspects of flight takeoff and landing in all airports in Nigeria.

The directive by the civil aviation regulator followed a recent controversial brawl that involved a passenger, Comfort Emmanson, and an Ibom Air flight attendant.

The NCAA boss said this would further put a stop to different rules by airlines, which have caused some sort of confusion among passengers of late.

“As a takeaway and to avoid ambiguity and confusion, all mobile phones and other portable electric devices should be switched off during the critical stage of flight on all Nigerian airlines. Switch off. Nothing like flight mode any longer.

“Nigerian air operators are therefore required to amend their operators’ manuals to reflect this requirement and submit to the NCAA for approval,” he declared.

We remain alert to future reviews of this requirement as aircraft technological enhancement improves.

“It remains the responsibility of the crew to communicate this requirement to the passengers and the responsibility of the passenger to comply with crew instructions,” he added.

NNPP Cannot Align With APC – Galadima

by Nelson Ugwuagbo August 19, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

A chieftain of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP), Buba Galadima, has dismissed the possibility of any political alliance between the party’s leader, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, and President Bola Tinubu’s All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking in an interview with Channels Television on Monday, Galadima pointed to the ongoing Kano Emirate crisis as evidence of deep divisions between the two sides.

“How can Kwankwaso be a friend of the APC with what they are doing to us in Kano? Appointing two emirs in one town? There is a Federal Government emir and a state emir. Who has the responsibility to appoint emirs and pay them their salaries?” he asked.

Galadima further accused security agencies of being deployed to protect one faction of the Kano emirate while neglecting the worsening insecurity faced by residents across the state.

“They have their emirs. They have not less than 40 pickup vehicles filled with mobile police guarding the Emir (Ado Bayero). In some localities in Kano, people are being killed and their handsets taken, while the police are tied down. Are they not ashamed?” he queried.
