Anambra Lawmaker Suspended For Revealing Salary, Allowance on Social Media

by Nelson Ugwuagbo August 26, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Anambra State House of Assembly has suspended the member representing Ayamelum Constituency, Bernard Udemezue, for three months over a social media post disclosing his entitlements as a lawmaker.

The suspension was announced during plenary on Tuesday following the adoption of a report by the House Committee on Rules, Business, Ethics and Privileges, chaired by Majority Leader Ikenna Ofodeme.

Udemezue had shared a message in a WhatsApp group largely made up of his constituents, revealing his allowances and stating that each lawmaker receives ₦10 million quarterly from the state government for constituency projects.

The disclosures angered his colleagues, who described his conduct as unparliamentary. The committee recommended his suspension without salary and barred him from appearing within the Assembly premises during the period.

Reacting to the decision, Udemezue insisted he did nothing wrong, arguing that his intention was to keep his constituents informed about his activities in the Assembly.

He further alleged that his suspension was an act of victimisation, claiming some lawmakers were upset because the revelation exposed that many pocket funds meant for constituency projects.

Terror Financing: Court Orders Banks to Release Sowore’s Transactions To IGP

by Nelson Ugwuagbo August 26, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered six banks to provide the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) with details of all accounts and transactions linked to Omoyele Sowore, publisher of Sahara Reporters.

Justice Emeka Nwite gave the order on Tuesday after granting an ex-parte motion filed by the IGP’s counsel, Wisdom Madaki.

In the motion, the police told the court that Sowore is under investigation for alleged terrorism financing, money laundering, and fraudulent activities.

Ruling on the application, Justice Nwite held that the request was justified.

“I have listened to the submission of the counsel to the applicant and I have also gone through the affidavit evidence. I am of the view and so hold that the application is meritorious. The prayer is hereby granted as prayed,” the judge said.

INEC Raises Concern Over 360,000 Uncollected PVCs in Osun

by Nelson Ugwuagbo August 26, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has expressed concern over the large number of unclaimed Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) in Osun State.

According to the state Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Dr. Mutiu Agboke, no fewer than 360,794 PVCs are yet to be collected across the state. The disclosure was made in a statement issued on Tuesday in Osogbo by the Commission’s Public Relations Officer, Musa Olurode.

Describing the figure as “troubling,” Agboke appealed to eligible voters to seize the opportunity of the ongoing Continuous Voter Registration (CVR) exercise to pick up their cards.

INEC reminded residents that while fresh registration is ongoing, multiple registration is prohibited, warning that offenders risk having their data invalidated.

The Commission stressed that the unclaimed PVCs represent thousands of voices excluded from the democratic process and called on political parties, civil society groups, religious leaders, and traditional rulers to help mobilise citizens for prompt collection.

Agboke further emphasised that collecting PVCs is as crucial as registration itself, noting that citizens cannot participate in elections without their voter cards.

No more corruption in Nigeria – Tinubu tells Brazilian president

by Folarin Kehinde August 26, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has assured Brazilian investors that Nigeria’s ongoing economic reforms are producing measurable results, declaring that corruption has been curbed since he assumed office.

Tinubu gave the assurance on Monday during a meeting with ministers from both countries and members of the Brazil Business Group, where he reiterated Nigeria’s readiness to deepen cooperation in technology transfer, food security, manufacturing, and renewable energy.

He described Nigeria as a “vast, untapped market full of opportunities for Brazilian companies,” stressing that his administration is committed to creating a business-friendly environment.

Acknowledging the challenges that accompanied the initial phase of reforms, the president said: “It was initially painful, but today the result is blossoming.”

His words, “The reform that I have embarked upon since I took over in Nigeria has been very impactful. I can beat my chest for that,” Tinubu said.

“It was initially painful, but today the result is blossoming. It is getting clearer to the people.”

“We have more money in the economy, no more corruption. We have the governor of the Central Bank here.

“You don’t have to know him before you get the foreign exchange that you need. The speculators are out in our currency market. The door is open for businesses — easy in, easy out,” he added.

BREAKING: Japan denies special visa category for Nigerians in Kisarazu ‘Hometown’ tag

by Folarin Kehinde August 26, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Japan has dismissed claims that it plans to introduce a special visa category for Nigerians seeking to relocate to Kisarazu, the city it recently designated as Nigeria’s official “hometown.”Japan trip

At the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD9) in Yokohama last week, the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) unveiled the ‘JICA Africa Hometown’ initiative aimed at strengthening ties between African nations and Japanese local government.

Under the scheme, four Japanese cities were paired with four African countries: Kisarazu with Nigeria, Nagai with Tanzania, Sanjo with Ghana, and Imabari with Mozambique.

The Foreign Ministry said Monday that Tokyo has “no plans to take measures to promote the acceptance of immigrants or issue special visas for residents of African countries.”

“There have been reports and statements both domestically and internationally that contain information contrary to the facts,” the ministry said in a statement, stressing that the government-linked aid agency, known as JICA, only plans to promote exchanges through various activities.
