JUST IN: Kenyan police arrest Binance executive who escaped from Nigeria

by Folarin Kehinde April 22, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Kenya Police Service has arrested fleeing Binance executive, Nadeem Anjarwalla, as the International Criminal Police Organisation moves to extradite him to Nigeria within the week.

Government sources familiar with the case who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorised to speak on the matter confirmed the development to our correspondent on Sunday night.

One of the sources said, “Binance executive, Nadeem Anjarwalla, has been arrested by the Kenya Police Service, and he would be extradited to Nigeria this week by INTERPOL.”

Another source noted, “As we had said before that Anjarwalla would be extradited, he has been arrested in Kenya, and he’ll be extradited to Nigeria this week.”

The PUNCH had exclusively reported that the Federal Government had traced Anjarwalla to Kenya, following his escape from lawful custody in Nigeria.

Following the development, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, the International Criminal Police, the Nigeria Police Force, and the Kenyan Police Service have deepened talks to quicken Anjarwalla’s extradition.

In the earlier report, Saturday PUNCH reported that Anjarwalla, whose cover has now been blown, went into hiding immediately after he landed in Kenya.

“We have found him. We know where he is; he is in Kenya, and we’re working with the authorities to bring him back to Nigeria.

“All hands are on the deck, the government and all the security agencies are working hard in conjunction with the Kenyan authorities and INTERPOL, to ensure his return to Nigeria to face the charges brought against him,” the report had quoted a source as saying.

Abia State Governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, is under scrutiny for reportedly disbursing a staggering sum of N107.2 billion to contractors for projects that either do not exist or remain incomplete. This revelation has sparked widespread concern and calls for accountability within the state government.

A forensic audit conducted by an audit firm has revealed how the immediate past government of Abia State approved funds to contractors for the construction of non-existent state-owned Airport and other infrastructure.

The Abia State Governor, Dr Alex Otti made the revelation during a presentation at the Johns Hopkins University School of Advanced International Studies, Washington DC, United States.

He spoke on the theme, ‘Dynamics of State Governance, Economic Transition and the Challenges of Seeking to Establish a New Order Amidst Multiple Constraints and Pushbacks.’

Otti said it is difficult to admit how some Nigerian leaders contest elections for reasons shrouded in corruption.

The governor who took over from Okezie Ikpeazu in 2023 explained that some politicians have abused the privilege of governance thereby impoverishing their states.

Otti explained how he engaged one of the top audit firms to examine the state accounts, adding that the auditor uncovered several deals that are shrouded in corruption.

He said, “Talking about corruption, I set up a forensic audit as soon as I took over last year in Abia so that there won’t be any argument, I called in one of the top three audit firms in the world, and not too long ago, they sent in their report and some of the things in the report are frightening.

“Tinubu is a game-changer, naira will continue to appreciate against dollar”, Shettima boasts

by Folarin Kehinde April 20, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Vice President Kashim Shettima has expressed optimism that the Naira would continue to appreciate against the dollar at the forex market.

Mr Stanley Nkwocha, spokesperson of the vice president in a statement on Saturday, said Shettima stated this at a meeting with officials of the Lagos Chamber of Commerce and Industry (LCCI), at the President Villa, Abuja.

He said President Bola Tinubu ended the fuel subsidy and ensured the unification of the multiple exchange rate because the former arrangement was producing billionaires overnight.

“Naira went haywire and some people were celebrating but inwardly we were laughing at them because we knew that we have the leadership to reverse the trend.

“Asiwaju knows the game, and truly the Naira is gaining and the difference will drop further.”

He recalled that the quality of leadership provided by President Tinubu as governor of Lagos laid the foundation for the massive development witnessed in the state.

Shettima assured that the Tinubu administration is doing its best to address challenges in the power sector.

According to him, Tinubu’s administration is aware that power is absolutely essential for development.

“We are determined to ensure that we generate jobs for our youths. Honestly, the President’s obsession is to live in a place of glory, to transform this country to a higher pedestal.

“He wants to leave a legacy, one of qualitative leadership because the hope of the black man, the hope of Africa rests with Nigeria.

‘ I want to assure you that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is one of you. He understands your ecosystem. In this government, you have an ally and a friend.”

Violence broke out at Ward 1 at Stella Maris College, Okitipupa, between rival supporters of two aspirants of the All Progressives Congress who are contesting to be the party’s candidate for the November 16, Ondo State Governorship election.

Accredited party members, who had gathered in large numbers to participate in the candidate selection process, fled the scene when violence erupted among the rival factions.

The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the accreditation and election process had not begun when the violence erupted as voters scampered for safety.

JUST IN: Yahaya Bello reportedly plotting to escape to Morocco to reunite with wife, investments

by Folarin Kehinde April 20, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Fleeing governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello, has perfected a plan to flee the country to a North African country, multiple sources confirmed to SaharaReporters on Saturday.

According to SaharaReporters, Bello, 48 years old who is wanted by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) for over N80billion fraud, plans to flee to the North African country where one of his wives presently resides and manages their “investments.”

A family member further revealed that Bello actually possessed two passports which are of the North African country and one Arab nation where he also allegedly has multi-million dollars investments.

“He is planning to go to Morocco. He also has investments in Dubai. Under Bello’s administration, apart from Okene local government and probably two or three local government within his Senatorial district, that enjoy projects like hospital of 50 beds respectively, no other local government does”, the source revealed.

“We challenge his media team to point out if in the remaining 16 local governments, there was a single borehole for water, road project or any housing scheme construction work done by Yahaya Bello administration in the last 8 years apart from housing estates constructed by his predecessor and landmark properties.

“Kogi State was enslaved under Yahaya Bello due to occultic powers and unreported killings due to fear,” another source added.

“Former governor, Yahaya’s administration was a disaster, characterised by mismanagement, stealing, misplacement of priorities, misappropriation, corruption, nepotism, killings and oppression.”

“The other option is that Bello is set to travel out of Nigeria as he has prepared for his bail in court with millions of dollars,” another source added.

Leading reporters earlier reported that the Nigerian police detained the female police officer who served as the aide-de-camp to Bello as well as other security details for aiding his escape from the EFCC operatives in Abuja.

The ADC was arrested, along with other police officers assigned to 48-year-old Bello, and they are being held at the State Criminal Investigation Department, Federal Capital Territory, Abuja.

Their arrests and incarceration came after the Inspector General of Police, Olukayode Egbetokun, issued an order on Thursday night requiring their immediate departure from the former governor.

“The ADC and the other police details attached to Yahaya Bello have been arrested and detained.

“They were arrested on the order of the IG, on the suspicion that they aided and abetted the former governor’s escape from the EFCC on Wednesday,” one of the sources had said.

Another source said, “Yahaya Bello’s female ADC and other police officers attached to him were brought to the command this morning, and they’ve been detained for aiding and abetting (the governor’s escape).”

“Vacate Government House Lokoja and surrender to EFCC” – Kogi youth group tells Yahaya Bello

by Folarin Kehinde April 20, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

A youth group in Kogi State has issued a strong demand for former Governor Yahaya Bello to vacate the Government House in Lokoja and surrender himself to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

The group accused Bello of evading arrest amid allegations of misappropriating over ₦85 billion.

In a press release signed by Comrade Abdulquadri Shuaibu on behalf of the Network of Professional Kogi State Youths, the group condemned Bello’s actions, labelling them regrettable, disgraceful, and embarrassing. They emphasized the importance of upholding the rule of law and ensuring justice prevails.

The coalition gave Bello a 24-hour ultimatum to surrender to the EFCC or the nearest police station.

Furthermore, the group called for the immediate resignation of the current Governor, Alhaji Usman Adodo, who is accused of aiding Bello’s evasion of arrest.

The youth group said: “As a former Governor, we expected some degree of decorum and respect for the rule of law from him.

“The recent confrontation between the EFCC and Governor Yahaya Bello at his Abuja residence is a regrettable episode that is an embarrassment to Kogi people and Nigerians at large. We unequivocally condemn the former Governor’s conduct and insist that justice must take its course.

“As a united Coalition representing the citizens of Kogi State, we issue a 24-hour ultimatum to Governor Yahaya Bello to vacate the Government House and surrender to the EFCC or the nearest Police Station.

“Failure to comply, we will occupy the Government House in a mega protest to ensure Governor Bello’s accountability and safeguard the integrity of our judicial system.”

The youth group also hailed the efforts of individuals, law enforcement agencies, and state institutions to ensure that justice is done and that the looted funds belonging to the good people of Kogi State are returned to facilitate the development of the state.

“We commend the EFCC for declaring Governor Yahaya Bello wanted and express solidarity with the Attorney General of the Federation’s unwavering commitment to combatting corruption. Indeed, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s steadfast dedication to this cause is commendable, and we implore him to persevere in his efforts.

“Furthermore, we applaud the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for withdrawing police protection from Governor Bello. While this is commendable, we urge the IGP to do everything within his powers to ensure that Yahaya Bello is arrested and handed over to the appropriate authorities for investigation and prosecution,” the statement concluded.

A tragic accident involving a bus from the Lord’s Chosen Charismatic Renewal Movement and a tipper truck in Imo State has claimed the lives of some individuals.

Twenty (20) persons are suspected to have died in the ghastly road accident in Owerri, the Imo state capital.

Eyewitnesses revealed that the bus and the tipper truck, both travelling in the same direction, collided and crashed into a Coca-Cola shop in Orogwe, Owerri West Local Government Area.

Five people died instantly and were taken to a nearby hospital by ambulance, while others remained trapped beneath the bus. Among the deceased were three workers from the Coca-Cola depot.

Additional casualties included the tipper driver and his conductor. Although some Lord’s Chosen members sustained injuries, none were reported dead.

An eyewitness explained: “The accident was between a long coaster bus carrying members of the Lord’s Chosen, and a tipper. The two vehicles were coming from Onitsha to Owerri but the coaster bus, in an effort to overtake the tipper, now collided with it and immediately lost control. The driver tried to control the steering, but it rammed into a Coca-Cola Depot, where over ten of its staff were knocked down by the vehicle.

“When people gathered and started pulling victims out from the car, we discovered that three of the Coca-Cola staff died on the spot, and others were badly injured.

“The tipper driver and his conductor also died. The conductor was forcefully pulled out of the back of the tipper and the moving tipper climbed on his head and smashed the brain. The driver also hit his chest on the steering and bled to death. It was a horrible accident.”
