Our truck drivers earn more than graduates – Dangote boasts

by Folarin Kehinde September 17, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Aliko Dangote, founder and president/chief executive of the Dangote Group has revealed that his company’s drivers earn significantly more than graduates.

Mr Dangote, in a video shared on the TVC X handle on Tuesday, made this known in reaction to the allegations made by the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG).

NUPENG had recently accused Mr Dangote and Sayyu Aliu Dantata of engaging in alleged anti-union practices. The union claims the businessmen are trying to monopolise Nigeria’s downstream oil and gas distribution while suppressing workers’ rights.

At the time, NUPENG said its members would commence a nationwide strike from Monday, 8 September in protest against what it described as anti-union labour practices, linked to the deployment of newly imported Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) trucks by the Dangote Refinery, for direct distribution of petroleum products.

NUPENG, whose membership includes petrol tanker drivers, in a statement jointly signed by its President, Williams Akhoreha, and General Secretary, Afolabi Olawale, alleged that the drivers recruited for the CNG trucks are being forced to sign undertakings not to belong to any existing union in the oil and gas industry.

At the time, the Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO) expressed support for NUPENG in its ongoing struggle against the Dangote Group.

NARTO National President, Othman Yusuf, in a statement, said it rejected Dangote’s plan for free distribution of petroleum products, citing its unsustainability and potential to eliminate independent transporters who operate over 30,000 trucks across the country.

Similarly, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) backed NUPENG as its president, Joe Ajaero, accused the Dangote Group of “exploiting Nigerian workers while disregarding their constitutional rights.”

Speaking in the video, Mr Dangote said the launch of the trucks didn’t stop anyone from their work, noting that joining NUPENG should be voluntary.

According to him, his drivers earn almost three to four times the national minimum wage, with some earning more than many graduates.

He emphasised that the trucks his company launched will create 24,000 jobs, with each truck supporting about six people, noting that after five years of accident-free driving, drivers can apply for housing loans.

“So these trucks they are fighting over will create 24,000 jobs. What we are saying is that our salary is almost three or four times their own. After five years of free accidents, a driver can apply and get a house loan.

“Our drivers earn more than graduates. If you look at what they earn in a month, it’s almost four times the national minimum wage,” Mr Dangote said.

BREAKING: FG Adds Chinese Language to Nigerian Secondary School Curriculum

by Folarin Kehinde September 17, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Mandarin has officially been included as one of the foreign languages to be taught in senior secondary schools across Nigeria, following a recent review of the national curriculum.

The announcement was made on Tuesday by Dr Danlami Hayyo, Secretary of Education for the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), during the commissioning of the 14th Chinese Corner at Government Secondary School, Tudun Wada, Abuja.

Dr Hayyo stated, “May I inform you that in the recent review of our curriculum, the Chinese language has been selected as one of the international languages to offer in senior secondary schools.”

He added that the FCT had demonstrated foresight by introducing Mandarin early through the Chinese Corners initiative.

The Chinese Corner, an educational and cultural centre sponsored by China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation, forms part of the company’s corporate social responsibility efforts.

According to Hayyo, the newly inaugurated centre is the 14th of its kind in the FCT, with similar facilities now present in several secondary schools across the territory.

Speaking on behalf of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, Hayyo expressed gratitude to the Chinese government and its embassy in Nigeria for their continued support. He concluded his remarks with a Chinese proverb: “Hai nei cun zhiji, tianya ruo bi lin,” meaning, “A bosom friend brings distant lands near.”

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) has announced the rescue of eight children suspected to have been stolen from northern states and trafficked to the south.

The rescue followed a raid on a popular orphanage in Asaba, the Delta State capital.

NAPTIP spokesperson, Vincent Adekoye, confirmed the development in a statement on Tuesday titled “NAPTIP rescues eight suspected stolen children from a popular orphanage in Asaba.”

According to the agency, the operation was carried out in collaboration with the Department of State Services (DSS), the Nigeria Police, and local civil society groups. Officials said the raid was prompted by years of complaints from parents in Kano and neighbouring states over missing children.

FG Suspends Controversial 4% FOB Levy on Imports

by Nelson Ugwuagbo September 16, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Federal Government has ordered the immediate suspension of the recently introduced Free On Board (FOB) levy on imported goods.

Finance Minister Wale Edun, in a directive issued late Monday, announced that the levy, introduced last month by the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), would be put on hold following widespread concerns from businesses and trade stakeholders.

“Following extensive consultations with industry stakeholders, trade experts, and relevant government officials, it has become clear that the implementation of the 4% FOB charge poses significant challenges to Nigerian trade facilitation, the business environment, and economic stability,” Edun said in a statement.

The suspension comes after importers and business groups warned that the levy would raise the cost of goods, fuel inflation, and undermine Nigeria’s trade competitiveness.

They also argued that the additional charge would increase the cost of doing business and threaten the country’s fragile economic recovery efforts.

Rivers Government Begins Events to Mark End of Emergency Rule

by Nelson Ugwuagbo September 16, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Rivers State government has begun activities to mark the expiration of the six-month emergency rule imposed in the state.

President Bola Tinubu had on March 18 declared a state of emergency in Rivers following a prolonged political crisis. The declaration led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and members of the State House of Assembly.

With the initial six-month period set to elapse on Friday, September 18, there are strong indications that Governor Fubara and the lawmakers may soon be reinstated.

As part of the transition process, the state government will today, Tuesday, host a public lecture at the Government House in Port Harcourt. The lecture, themed “Democracy and Good Governance”, is expected to highlight lessons from the period of emergency rule.

According to a notice signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Ibibia Lucky Worika, the Administrator of Rivers State, Vice Admiral (Rtd.) Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas, CFR, will attend as Special Guest.

The charges, filed on September 16, 2025, also list X Corp. and Meta, owners of X (formerly Twitter) and Facebook as co-defendants. According to the court documents, Sowore described President Tinubu as a “criminal” in several social media posts, while criticizing his claims of eliminating corruption.

No court date has been fixed for the matter.

Despite the charges and reported threats from the DSS, Sowore has refused to retract or delete the posts. He has maintained a defiant stance, insisting on his right to free expression.

Anti-Corruption Fight: The moral dimension of the job, and the towering guts of Mr. Ola Olukoyede

by Leading Reporters September 15, 2025
written by Leading Reporters

The task of combating corruption in a country like Nigeria requires exceptional morality and rare bravery. It demands a willpower that surpasses the challenges of everyday work. Fighting corruption is a risk endeavour because you are not only dealing with corrupt individuals but also their destructive ideologies, inflated self-entitlements, ruthless manoeuvres, and moral decay. You are confronting a menace that has become ingrained in our collective consciousness.

Since President Ahmed Bola Tinubu appointed Mr Ola Olukoyede, precisely two years ago, as the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crime Commission, he has brought with him an untamed courage, not only to dare the corrupt elements but to unclutter the bureaucratic bottlenecks that embolden corruption and everything that pushes the ideology of corruption. Corruption in Nigeria transcends stealing of public funds; it is a social aberration and a retrogressive menace that has permeated every aspect of our lives – social, economic, political, and even religious.

Perennially, the big question has been whether Nigeria can upturn this devastating trend and build a true nation where the principles of accountability, stewardship and morality in service delivery become an integral part of our existence. So many will answer “NO”, while most, especially those who have taken time to understand the journey of true nationhood, believe it is achievable. To achieve this tall order, Nigerians need to understand that a true change is mostly self-induced. A change comes when we reflect on our collective consciousness.

Without this self-introspection and self-awareness, no angel can effect the needed change we desperately desire. Nigerians have realised the dangers of corruption. We have understood the many great things and opportunities we have lost as a result of untamed corruption in Nigeria. Now is the time to re-engage our minds and choose the greater good. True change comes when we are ready and willing to do the right thing. Change comes with self-reformation. The moment we stir our collective consciousness to act on the greater right, change will come.

Talking about self-reformation, a story about America’s early days towards greater nation-building comes to mind. It was said that an agency of the American government once put out an advert that read ‘Reformers Wanted”. Within days, countless applications flooded the agency. Many applicants copiously quoted their qualifications and why they believed they were the best fit for the job as nation-reformers. Days and months went by, and there was no response from the agency that placed the advert.

The applicants, tired of waiting for a response, besieged the agency’s office to enquire why there was no response from it, many months after it posted an advert for an appointment. The agency pacified them with the assurance that the official response would be released in a matter of days.  A few days afterwards, as promised, the agency released another advert. This time, the tone of the message changed from “Reformers Wanted” to “Reformers of Selves Wanted.” To its surprise, the agency did not receive one single application.

The import of this story is that we all want a society that is reformed. We want politicians who are reformed. We want leaders who will be as flawless as angels, but we are not ready to introspect on our own weaknesses as individual citizens. We hype frivolity over virtue. There is no conscious effort towards creative statecraft. We act like tuna fish, flowing with the waves of the social media frenzies. We criticise others even when we have the tendency to act worse than they do if allowed to occupy the positions that those we criticise occupy.

I always ask myself, would I have done better than those I accuse today? Would I have had the courage to stand out and do better for the sake of greater nation-building, or am I just screaming corruption because I have not had the opportunity to be in a position that is morally demanding?

Not digressing, every keen observer who has been following the activities of Mr. Ola Olukoyede-led EFCC will understand the enormous load on the shoulders of one man against countless Nigerians. From those in elective and appointive positions to the yahoo-boys; from the civil servants to ordinary Nigerian business owners, corruption has nearly become our new normal. Unlike what we were used to in the past, Mr. Ola Olukoyede seems more concerned with ridding Nigeria of corruption and rebranding the battered image of the country within the polity of nations. His approach to the fight against corruption seems more subtle, incisive, and result oriented.

He does not seem to be a fan of media frenzies. In Nigeria, the loudest is assumed to be the toughest. Media toughness has not reduced corruption. The corrupt elements, too, are louder in the media. This seems to have prompted Mr. Olukoyede’s subtle approach to getting the job. This is by far a better approach, and it is expected that with more Nigerians understanding their roles in the anti-corruption fight, Nigeria can and will become the country of our collective dream.

Niger Preachers must Submit Sermons for approval – Gov Bago

by Folarin Kehinde September 15, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Governor Umar Bago of Niger State has said it is mandatory for preachers to submit their sermons for approval.

Speaking on TVC’s Politics on Sunday, the governor clarified some aspects of the law seeking to regulate preaching in the state.

“I didn’t ban evangelism… For everyone going to sermon on Friday, he should bring his scriptures for review, and it’s normal. Even in Saudi Arabia, this is done. We cannot say because you have been given the opportunity to be a cleric, you will go out and preach the gospel that is anti-people, anti-government and you think it’s normal.”

Asked if it was out of fear of indoctrination, the governor said, “It’s in that direction. We want to be able to see what they are preaching, hear what they are saying. We are working together with security agencies; the Department of State Services (DSS), the Police, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) and the military.”

The development, which first became public earlier in the month, has generated controversy.

The Director General of the Niger State Religious Affairs, Umar Farooq, had said anyone interested in preaching in Niger must obtain a licence, emphasising that preachers had two months to obtain their licences.

“It is true, the State Government has banned preaching. Any preacher who wants to preach must secure a licence between now and the next two months.”

“All they need to do is to visit our office, get, and fill out the form. After which, they will have to face a panel that will screen them before they can start preaching,” Farooq had said.

ADC Guber Candidate Hails INEC for Recognising David Mark Led Party Leadership

by Nelson Ugwuagbo September 12, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The governorship candidate of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Anambra State, Mr. John Chuma Nwosu, has lauded the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for regularising the David Mark-led National Working Committee (NWC) of the party.

Nwosu described INEC’s prompt recognition of the party’s leadership as a significant democratic gesture for Anambra voters, noting that it came at a time when the electorate is seeking a credible alternative.

He recalled that voters in the state were facing a political situation similar to 2003, when the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) “grew wanton with impunity as the only platform.”

Dismissing claims that INEC was working to set up the ADC for judicial failure, Nwosu said conspiracy theories had no place in the exercise of democratic rights and responsibilities.

“There is no hidden agenda. ADC has come to stay; all necessary documentation has been completed, and the Commission has done what is required,” he said.

According to him, Anambra voters now have a credible option beyond “old, spoilt platforms that have taken the masses for a ride.”

Nwosu expressed optimism that the November 8 governorship election would give the people an opportunity to elect “a servant leader and not arrogant mischief makers and opportunists.”

He added that INEC’s decision would compel political parties in the state to focus their campaigns on issues that matter to the people.
