Group hails Remi Tinubu’s National Library Project; appeals to FCT minister to make library/ICT centers mandatory for estate approvals

by Leading Reporters September 26, 2025
written by Leading Reporters

A pro-literacy, pro-vocational group, Books Across Borders Initiative, has hailed the First Lady’s effort at completing the national library project and her other pro-literacy activities.  Speaking during a media chat, the Chairman Board of Trustees of Books Across Borders Initiative, Light Shedrack, said that literacy and skills acquisition are the only antidote to poverty and insecurity, a belief that the First Lady has validated through her pro-literacy activities. Mr Shedrack also appealed to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory and other urban planners to ensure that every neighbourhood and estate is integrated with a functional library/ICT center to serve as a gathering place for the youths and adults alike.

”The First Lady has demonstrated and validated the widely accepted fact that literacy and skills acquisition are the only cures for poverty and insecurity. Poverty and illiteracy are interconnected. A nation that fails to promote a reading culture among its young population will likely be poor and restive. Poverty is a byproduct of illiteracy and a lack of skills. It breeds insecurity. Literacy, on the other hand, broadens and enlightens the mind. It promotes tolerance and human dignity.  A well-informed mind understands human unity and the sanctity of life. Skills acquisition makes us self-sufficient. A literate, innovative, and self-reliant society will effortlessly combat terrorism and other forms of insecurity.

“Let me use this opportunity also to appeal to the Minister of FCT Nyesom Wike, to integrate it into the FCT policy framework that each estate within the Federal Capital Territory should have a spot that serves as a functional library/ICT center as well as a gathering place for the youths. Even if it is a modular library.

“The First Lady has set the pace.  It would be ideal if the other States’ First Ladies toe the same line and ensure that literacy and ICT advancement are prioritised in their respective states, as their pet projects.

Speaking further on the activities of Books Across Borders Initiative, Mr, Shedrack made a case for skills acquisition, calling on organised private sectors, the governments, the religious bodies and other stakeholders in nation building to wade into the educational deficiency bedeviling the country.

“No efforts would ever produce any positive result if we do not prioritise education and skills acquisition.  Today, the world is migrating to AI and robotics.  How prepared are we as a people?  The time to make decisive efforts in advancing education, skills acquisition, especially in the areas of ICT, robotics and AI, has come.  Religious organisations such as Mosques and Churches, traditional organisations, NGOs, governments at all levels, as well as the organised private sectors should be at the fore of this indispensable message and support of mass education and skills acquisition.  This has been our central message and activity in the Books Across Borders Initiative and Academy for Creating Enterprise.

BREAKING: Dangote Refinery sacks Nigerian workers

by Folarin Kehinde September 26, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The management of Dangote Petroleum Refinery has announced the termination of appointment of all its Nigerian staff.

The mass sack is happening less than 24 hours after majority of the workers joined the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN).

In a memo signed by the Chief General Manager of Human Asset Management, Femi Adekunle, the company said the action was part of a “total re-organisation” following alleged sabotage across several units of the refinery. Affected workers were ordered to return all company property and proceed for clearance.

The development has heightened tensions in the oil and gas sector, with PENGASSAN and Dangote Refinery already in a long-running dispute over unionisation rights.

Abuja Bus Terminals Remain Shut 100 Days After Tinubu’s commissioning

by Nelson Ugwuagbo September 25, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The two bus terminals recently commissioned by President Bola Tinubu have remained locked for more than three months after their inauguration, leaving commuters in Abuja to grapple with transportation challenges.

The multi-million naira projects were commissioned in June as part of activities to mark Tinubu’s second term in office.

The facilities are located in Kugbo, along the Abuja-Nyanya-Mararaba road, and in Mabushi, along the Shehu Musa Yar’Adua way.

A third terminal in the Central Business Area is still under construction.

The projects were conceived by the Nyesom Wike-led FCT administration to address Abuja’s chaotic transport system.

In May 2024, Wike awarded the contracts, saying the initiative would enhance security, reduce “one chance” incidents, and provide jobs for residents.

The terminals, designed to process more than 10,000 passengers daily and host 120 buses and taxis, also include cinemas, food courts, and shopping spaces.

Despite the fanfare, Daily Trust reports that the completed terminals remain shut.

Some Nigerians stated that the closure shows nothing has changed since the commissioning.

“What was all the noise about then? Nothing has changed since the so-called commissioning. No buses, nothing. The two facilities have remained closed since then,” Joseph Iwalekun, a resident, said.

Ifeoma Job, a civil servant, described the situation as disappointing.

“How can you commission something and still keep it under lock for more than three months? It is unfortunate because commuters’ suffering continues,” she queried.

Chinedu Elechi, mandate secretary for the FCT transport secretariat, said operations would begin once procurement processes under a public-private partnership are concluded.

“The difference between government and private is bureaucracy. So once the procurement process is done on hiring the operator, we’re good to go,” he said.

Heavy Rainfall Submerges Lagos, Leaves Homes, Roads Flooded

by Folarin Kehinde September 24, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Heavy rainfall on Wednesday left parts of Lagos submerged, causing severe flooding on major roads and in residential areas, especially across the Island axis.

The downpour, which lasted for hours, disrupted traffic, damaged properties, and forced many commuters to abandon vehicles and trek long distances.

Worst-hit areas include Mile 2, Lekki Phase 1, Lekki Expressway, 3rd Mainland Bridge, Ago Palace Way, Ayobo-Ipaja, Fola Osibo, and Sangotedo. Residents and eyewitnesses blamed blocked drainages and clogged water channels for worsening the situation.

An eyewitness stranded on the 3rd Mainland Bridge described the experience as terrifying, saying their bus nearly lost balance in the floodwaters.

In Lekki, residents lamented poor government response, noting that drainage channels remained clogged, with foul odours lingering after the rain.

“There’s traffic everywhere. I can’t even get a ride to deliver an item. The road construction before Abraham Adesanya is making things worse.

“Government should speed it up or pause it until the rainy season ends,” a resident complained.

In Orchid, another resident decried how stagnant water from clogged drains had become breeding grounds for mosquitoes and insects.

The flooding also triggered gridlock across major roads, with commercial drivers struggling to navigate submerged routes.

Traffic officials were deployed to ease movement, while authorities warned residents against dumping refuse into drainage channels, stressing that environmental laws would be strictly enforced to avert future flooding.

FG Revokes 1,263 Mining Licences Over Dormancy, Speculation

by Nelson Ugwuagbo September 23, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Federal Government has revoked 1,263 mining licences across the country in a move aimed at curbing dormant and speculative practices in the sector.

The affected permits include exploration licences, mining leases, quarry licences, and small-scale mining leases.

Authorities said the action is part of broader efforts to revitalise the industry by ensuring only active and credible operators remain in business. Defaulters will be required to settle outstanding fees, while the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) is expected to provide oversight to guarantee compliance and transparency.

The government added that the measures are designed to stimulate fresh investment, strengthen local participation, and enforce value-addition through domestic mineral processing.

National Assembly unseals Natasha’s Office

by Folarin Kehinde September 23, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The National Assembly has unsealed the office of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, located in Suite 2.05 of the Senate Wing.

A video posted on X by the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) captured Deputy Director of the Sergeant-at-Arms, Alabi Adedeji, unlocking the office on behalf of the Senate on Tuesday.

The office had been under seal for six months.

“To unseal Senator Natasha Akpoti’s office, I, Alabi Adedeji, Deputy Director, Sergeant-at-Arms, hereby unseal the office,” he declared before opening the door.

The lawmaker was suspended by the Senate in March for six months over her protest against the reassignment of her seat by Senate President Godswill Akpabio on February 20.

The suspension also barred her from participating in all activities of the 10th Senate.

Although the suspension lapsed in September 2025, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan was unable to resume her duties due to legal disputes and resistance from Senate leadership.

On July 4, the Federal High Court in Abuja ruled that the suspension was excessive and unconstitutional.

Following this, the senator wrote to the upper chamber to notify it of her intention to resume duties, but the National Assembly turned down her request.

It remains unclear whether she will rejoin her colleagues when plenary resumes on Tuesday, October 7, 2025.

BREAKING: No Visa for Corrupt Nigerian Officials – US Declares

by Folarin Kehinde September 22, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The United States has declared that corrupt Nigerian government officials will face visa restrictions, reiterating that there is no limit on accountability.

The U.S. Mission in Nigeria gave the warning in a statement released on Monday via its official X handle.

“Fighting corruption knows no borders or limits on accountability. Even when high-profile individuals engage in corruption, they can be barred from receiving U.S. visas,” the Mission stated.

The warning comes just hours after Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, was petitioned before U.S. authorities over alleged unlawful acquisition of multimillion-dollar properties in Florida.

Activist Omoyele Sowore, in a petition dated September 22, 2025, asked the Florida attorney general, James Uthmeier, to prosecute Wike for alleged money laundering and to initiate forfeiture proceedings against the assets. The petition, signed by his lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, also urged U.S. authorities to impose sanctions and visa bans on the minister.

Citing Peoples Gazette’s September 1 report and backed with three claim deeds as exhibits, the petition alleged that Wike, with the assistance of his wife, Justice Eberechi Nyesom-Wike of Nigeria’s Court of Appeal, secretly purchased three luxury lakeside homes in Winter Springs, Seminole County, between 2021 and 2023. The properties, now valued at over $6 million, were said to have been transferred to their children — Jordan, 25, Joaquin, 23, and Jazmyne, 20.

The homes listed in the petition include 113 Springcreek Lane, purchased for $535,000 and transferred to Jordan; 209 Hertherwood Court, purchased for $459,157 and transferred to Joaquin; and 208 Hertherwood Court, purchased for $465,000 and transferred to Jazmyne.

All transactions were reportedly carried out in cash through quitclaim deeds, a method often used for family transfers but, according to the petition, deliberately employed to conceal ownership and evade oversight.

“These transactions, executed in cash and hidden under the names of his children, form a deliberate scheme to launder the proceeds of corruption into U.S. real estate,” the petition stated.

It further alleged that Wike failed to declare the properties to Nigeria’s Code of Conduct Bureau, in violation of the Fifth Schedule of the 1999 Constitution. Several U.S. and Florida statutes were also cited as having been breached, including the Florida Money Laundering Act (§896.101, Fla. Stat.), the Contraband Forfeiture Act (§932.701–707, Fla. Stat.), and federal laws on money laundering (18 U.S.C. §1956 and §1957).

“This brazen conduct, combined with his unexplained foreign acquisitions, suggests that Florida is being used as a safe haven for laundering the proceeds of corruption,” the petition added.

Wike is one of President Bola Tinubu’s most cherished ministers.

Passenger dies mid-flight in Ibom Air plane

by Folarin Kehinde September 22, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

A tragic death of a male passenger occurred on Sunday aboard an Ibom Air flight from Lagos to Abuja.

The incident has brought to fore concerns about in-flight medical emergencies in Nigeria.

According to a report by CKN News, the passenger took ill barely 20 minutes after take-off.

Crew members attempted to administer first aid before the pilot radioed the control tower at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, to declare a medical emergency.

Due to heavy air traffic at the airport, the flight was eventually cleared to land at the Presidential Wing, where ambulances and medical personnel were on standby.

However, despite the immediate response, attempts to revive the passenger on arrival were unsuccessful.

The death, which has since stirred reactions on social media, has raised fresh concerns about the preparedness of Ibom Air and other airlines to manage medical crises in the air.

Passengers on commercial flights are often vulnerable when sudden health complications occur at altitude, making crew readiness and on-board medical supplies crucial.

As of Sunday night, neither Ibom Air nor the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) had issued an official statement confirming the death or providing further details.

The identity of the deceased passenger and the exact cause of death remained unclear as of press time.
