Trump Reacts After Second Assassination Attempt

by Nelson Ugwuagbo September 16, 2024
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Former US President Donald Trump has confirmed that he is safe after a second assassination attempt on his life on Sunday.

The incident occurred less than two months after he was hit by a bullet in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July .

According to Trump’s campaign team, gunshots were heard near the former president’s vicinity at Palm Beach Golf Club, Florida.

Trump’s spokesperson, Steven Cheung, released a statement saying, “President Trump is safe following gunshots in his vicinity.

No additional details are available at this time”.

Trump also issued a statement saying he is well and safe, and vowed never to surrender, which appears to be a message directed at his detractors ahead of the US presidential election in November.

Trump is contesting the election against incumbent US Vice President Kamala Harris of the Democratic party.

In July, a 20-year-old, Matthew Crooks, from Pennsylvania, shot a bullet during a campaign event in Butler, Pennsylvania, which the former president narrowly escaped.

Trump’s ear was grazed by the bullet during the incident, which tragically led to the death of one rally attendee, Corey Comperatore, and injuries to two others.

Fortunately, Secret Service agents subdued the shooter after he opened fire at the former president.

The suspect of the shooting has been identified as Ryan Wesley Routh, who has been arrested by officials and the attack is under investigation.

Routh reportedly dropped his weapon and fled in an SUV and was later taken into custody in a neighbouring county, authorities told AP, His motive is unclear.

Edo 2024: Tinubu didn’t sign peace accord when he contested in 2023 – Peace Committee

by Folarin Kehinde September 16, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Bishop Matthew Hassan-Kukah of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto and co-convener of the National Peace Committee has revealed that President Bola Tinubu did not sign a peace accord during his presidential campaign.

Speaking at the Edo Election Security Townhall in Benin City, Kukah said the committee cannot force candidates to sign the peace pact.

He was reacting to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) refusal to sign the peace pact over some allegations levelled against the police.

Kukah said the committee headed by former Head of State, General Abdulsalami Abubakar, can’t force any candidate to sign the peace pact, which has become an electoral ritual in the last decade.

His words: “The National Peace Committee, what we do is not in the Electoral Act; it’s not law; it’s moral. You can’t compel people to fall in love or love their neighbour.

“If you go back to the 2015 election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar the presidential candidate for the PDP, was not there to sign the Peace Accord.

“And, of course, the opposition went to town, which is what it ought to be, and the next day, he (Atiku) turned up to sign.

“What is also very interesting is that the current president, when he was a presidential candidate, did not sign; it wasn’t our fault that the political opposition didn’t take advantage of it.

“It’s a pity, but we are not going to take anybody to court for not signing the Peace Accord. The only thing it does to you as a candidate is that it sends a wrong signal, which can be very easily exploited by the opposition.”

NNPCL Reveals How Much It Purchased Petrol From Dangote Refinery

by Folarin Kehinde September 16, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has revealed that it purchased petrol at N898 per litre from the Dangote Refinery, contradicting earlier claims of a lower price.

In a statement issued to Daily Trust on Sunday, the Chief Spokesperson of the NNPCL, Olufemi Soneye, clarified that the price of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), commonly known as petrol, was significantly higher than previously reported figures.

“We successfully loaded PMS at the Dangote Refinery today. The claim that we purchased it at ₦760 per litre is incorrect. For this initial loading, the price from the refinery was ₦898 per litre,” Soneye stated.

The NNPCL had mobilized approximately 300 trucks to the Dangote Refinery’s 650,000 barrels per day capacity in Lagos. Loading operations commenced on Sunday, with over 70 trucks having been loaded by the time of the report.

The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, had announced that NNPCL would be the sole off-taker of refined petrol from Dangote Refinery.

At the Technical Sub-Committee meeting on the sale of crude oil to local refineries in Naira, on Friday, the Finance Minister who was represented by Zacch Adedeji, Executive Chairman of Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), had said diesel from the Dangote Refinery would be sold in Naira to any interested off-taker, while PMS would only be sold to NNPCL, which will then sell to various marketers.

He announced the completion of all agreements and modalities for the implementation of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) approval on the sale of crude to local refineries in Naira and corresponding purchase of petroleum products in Naira.

Since then, the implementation committee chaired by the Hon. Minister of Finance and the technical committee have worked intensely with NNPCL and Dangote Refinery to fashion out the details of the modalities for the implementation of the FEC approval.

“I am glad to announce that all agreements have been completed and loading of the first batch of PMS from the Dangote Refinery will commence on Sunday 15th September. From 1st October, NNPC will commence the supply of about 385kbpd of crude oil to the Dangote Refinery to be paid for in Naira.

“In return, the Dangote Refinery will supply PMS and diesel of equivalent value to the domestic market to be paid for in Naira. Diesel will be sold in Naira by the Dangote Refinery to any interested offtaker. PMS will only be sold to NNPC, NNPC will then sell to various marketers for now,” he said.

He added that all associated regulatory costs (NPA, NIMASA, etc.) will also be paid for in Naira.

“APC has not said anything” – Families of young men killed by Okpebholo’s convoy lament

by Folarin Kehinde September 15, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The families of the young men killed by the convoy of the candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Monday Okpebholo have lamented that they are yet to hear from the party.

Okpebhoolo’s convoy crushed one Emmanuel Edionwe and four of his friends to death on Warrake Road around Uzebba axis in Owan West Local Government Area in Edo State during one of APC’s campaign rallies.

The tragic accident which occurred on Thursday, was said to have left the families of the deceased traumatised and devastated with many of them shattered by the fact that the victims were returning from a burial ceremony when they met their untimely death.

The bodies of four of the deceased victims were said to have been deposited at the Edo State University, Uzaurie Mortuary in Etsako West Local Government Area.

It was gathered that Okpebholo’s convoy rammed into the victims’ silver Camry sedan car when they were attempting to negotiate a sharp bend on the road, with many eyewitnesses stating that the accident occurred as a result of rough driving.

A relative of Emmanuel Edionwe, one of the deceased, who spoke to ThisDay on the condition of anonymity, said: “We are devastated beyond words. Emmanuel was a good, easygoing boy who should not be dead today.

“He and his friends were driving in the Silver Camry car. After the accident, we just learnt that five of them have died after the collision with Okpebholo’s convoy.

“Emmanuel and four of his friends are dead. There is just one of them who is in critical condition and is now being nursed to life at the hospital.”

Noting that Edionwe died at the Irrua Specialist Hospital (ISH), where he was later transferred to for specialist care, he said: “It was officials of the Federal Road Safety Corp (FRSC) that evacuated the bodies from the scene of the accident.

“Four of them died yesterday. One died this morning. There is only one surviving person in critical condition.”

The source noted that Okpebholo sneaked to check on the victims in the hospital they had been rushed to in Auchi after the accident but that it was disheartening that the APC campaign council had refused to acknowledge the incident or even commiserate with the affected families.

“We feel really bad that the APC has not said anything about the accident. It is insensitive. No one who suffers such a loss should be left without closure,” he said.

A journalist who was part of the APC convoy confirmed the story. According to him, the victims are not part of the campaign train but persons travelling on their own.

Edo election: “We’ll defend our votes with our blood” – PDP national chairman declares

by Folarin Kehinde September 15, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Ahead of the Edo governorship election, acting National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Ilia Damagun has vowed that party members would defend their votes “with blood.”

Damagun said the All Progressives Congress (APC) could only win Edo State through violence and intimidation, but the PDP would resist such attempts.

Damagun declared that the opposition would need to kill or arrest all PDP members to win the election.

The PDP chairman also warned the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) against announcing election results at night, threatening that the party members would defend their votes with their blood.

He emphasised that the election would serve as a test for Nigeria’s democracy, urging people to pay close attention to the state.

Damagun stated, “You have to kill or arrest all of us if you want to take this state. You may have gangs, but we have God.

“To INEC, we don’t want midnight result announcements. It is not a threat, but we will defend our votes with our blood.

“We urge Nigerians to focus on the state, and we promise that the PDP will continue to provide good governance in Edo State.”

Damagun later presented what he referred to as “the flag of victory” to Asue Ighodalo, the PDP’s governorship candidate.

21 Dead In Kaduna-Abuja Road Crash

by Nelson Ugwuagbo September 13, 2024
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

A tragic motor accident occurred on Thursday along the Kaduna-Abuja highway, resulting in the loss of at least 21 lives. The accident happened at the border of Kaduna and Niger States, involving a truck and a passenger commercial bus.

The bus was traveling from Abuja to Kano, while the other vehicle was heading to Katsina State. According to a source from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Kaduna State, the accident occurred near a traffic diversion in Niger State.

The diversion was caused by the ongoing reconstruction of the Kaduna-Abuja highway, which has been delayed. As a result, all vehicles were forced to drive on a single lane, leading to the accident.

The driver of the truck fled the scene immediately after the accident, causing heavy traffic to build up on the busy highway for several hours. The FRSC official confirmed that three surviving passengers were rushed to the Umaru Musa Memorial Hospital in Sabon-Wuse town for medical attention.

The remains of the victims were deposited at the hospital’s mortuary. The accident is a tragic reminder of the dangers of road travel in Nigeria, particularly on highways undergoing reconstruction.
