Ministers Intensify Lobbying as President Tinubu Plans to Sack Appointees

by Folarin Kehinde September 26, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

A looming cabinet reshuffle has sparked intense lobbying among ministers and their political godfathers, as President Bola Tinubu prepares to sack underperforming appointees.

Sources reveal that ministers have been frantically calling their godfathers to influence the President, while others have sought the intervention of the President’s allies and associates, including Chief of Staff Femi Gbajabiamila.

Leading reporters learnt that the President has been under immense pressure from political godfathers and ministers who fear being dropped from the cabinet.

To alleviate this pressure, the Chief of Staff advised President Tinubu to take a brief break in the United Kingdom after the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation Summit in China.

“The President needed some time off to clear his head and make decisions without external influence,” a presidential aide disclosed.

Ministers and their godfathers have pulled out all the stops to save their jobs. Some have resorted to media campaigns, touting their achievements and highlighting their contributions to the administration.

Others have taken to social media, attempting to garner public support and demonstrate their commitment to the President’s agenda.

A source stated, “Since reports filtered out that the President would soon reshuffle his cabinet, he has been under immense pressure from political godfathers and ministers who are afraid that they may be dropped from the cabinet.

“Due to the intense pressure, the CoS had to advise the President to take some days off in the United Kingdom after concluding the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation Summit in China two weeks ago.

“Remember that for some days, Nigerians did not know about Tinubu’s whereabouts. After pictures of his meeting with King Charles surfaced online, people started speculating that he went to London for medical checks. The fact is that he was advised to spend a few days to allow the pressure and lobbying to subside.

“Anyway, it is not unusual for politicians to lobby on behalf of their wards but Nigerians are not satisfied with the performance of many of the ministers and the President would have no choice but to let them go. If you are not performing, you have to go, regardless of who your godfather is,” he added.

It is learnt that the cabinet shake-up will be based on empirical evidence from performance reports.

Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy Bayo Onanuga on Wednesday confirmed that President Tinubu had stated his intent to rejig his cabinet.

He added, “The President has given an order to all his ministers at the last Federal Executive Council meeting to go out there and speak about the activities of his administration.

“Some of them have been media shy, television shy, radio shy, and he wants them to overcome all that and go out there and speak about what they have been doing because the feeling out there is that government is not doing enough and the government has been doing a lot. And it is up to them to go out there and blow their own trumpet. They should go out there and talk about what their ministries have been doing.”

The Central Delivery Coordination Unit, headed by Hadiza Bala-Usman, has been tracking and assessing ministerial performance. The unit received performance reports from at least 20 of the 35 ministries.

“The assessment reports will be a product of a joint effort of the ministers, citizens, and industry experts,” Bala-Usman had explained early in the administration.

President Tinubu had directed ministers to present their performance reports to Nigerians. “If you are performing, nothing to fear. If you miss the objective, we’ll review it. If no performance, you leave us,” he stated during his first anniversary.

FG Increase NYSC Monthly Allowance to N77,000

by Nelson Ugwuagbo September 26, 2024
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Federal Government has approved a monthly allowance increase for National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members to N77,000, effective July 2024. This change aligns with the National Minimum Wage (Amendment) Act 2024.

According to the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission’s letter dated September 25, 2024, signed by Chairman Ekpo Nta, the new allowance aims to provide “much-needed relief” and boost Corps Members’ morale.

NYSC Director General Brigadier General YD Ahmed thanked the Federal Government for the increment, which follows his advocacy visit to the Commission.

This increase comes five years after the last adjustment in 2019, raising the monthly allowance from N33,000 to N77,000, with an additional N44,000 per month retroactive to July. Outstanding arrears from July are expected to be paid soon.

The enhanced allowance aims to help Corps Members cope with rising living costs and inflation, significantly improving their well-being as they contribute to national development.

BREAKING: APGA threatens to suspend Governor Soludo, gives reasons

by Folarin Kehinde September 25, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA)has threatened to suspend the governor of Anambra State, Chukwuma Soludo over allegations of anti-party activities.

The threat was issued by the National Working Committee of the party led by Edozie Njoku on Wednesday, September 25.

Speaking at a media conference in Abuja, APGA’s national chairman, Edozie Njoku accused the governor of obstructing efforts by the Supreme Court-recognised NWC to restore harmony within the party.

Edozie said the party’s NWC would on Thursday release the names of Soludo and all other members involved in anti-party activities.

He said, “The local government elections are going to take place in Anambra on the 28th but what we should understand about this is that Charles Soludo, the governor, I don’t know, he should know that it’s a political system he’s not an emperor.”

“He (Soludo) has gone forward to get the House of Assembly to adopt, to make a law whereby the party cannot field their candidates,” Njoku said.

He added that the governor and his cohorts went ahead to field their preferred candidate behind the party.

“They are pushing us far to the limit, and they are believing that the governor of Anambra State is bigger than the party.

Noting that individual is bigger than the party, Njoku said the NWC, must take action so that we don’t look like toothless Bulldogs.

“This is a political party, and APGA is here to stay,” he added.

BREAKING: EFCC Confirms Yahaya Bello’s Visit to HQ, Shares Fresh Details on Ex-Governor’s Case

by Folarin Kehinde September 25, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has confirmed that former Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello visited their headquarters on September 18, 2024.

The Commission also warned that Bello’s day in court is inevitable, as he faces 18-count charges of money laundering preferred against him, totalling N80.2 billion.

According to the EFCC, Bello’s visit was an attempt to surrender, but it was rejected due to his previous antics. The Commission said it views these actions as scaremongering intended to scandalize them.

The appropriate place of surrender would be before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja, before whom his legal team had undertaken to produce him to answer to the 18-count charges,” the EFCC stated.

It can be recalled that on September 18, 2024, Bello visited the EFCC headquarters, although with a retinue of security details with his successor, Governor Usman Ododo who is immune to arrest, according to Nigerian law.

The governor was not attended to by the commission and has also failed to show up in court on Wednesday.

The EFCC said it remains committed to ensuring the law takes its course, despite Bello’s attempts to discredit them.

“Yahaya Bello should be more interested in clearing his name than playing the victim and crying persecution, where none exists,” the EFCC stated.

The EFCC had filed 18-count charges of money laundering against Bello, alleging that he laundered N80.2 billion during his tenure as Kogi State Governor.

Bello’s legal team had undertaken to produce him before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja. However, his failure to appear in court has raised questions about his willingness to face trial.

The EFCC said it has arraigned several high-profile individuals, including three former ministers and two ex-governors, demonstrating their commitment to tackling economic and financial crimes.

“Every former governor, minister, head of ministries, departments and agencies being investigated by the Commission would soon be charged to court,” the EFCC assured.

The commission reiterated its no sacred cow policy, emphasizing that no individual is above the law.

The commission reiterated its no sacred cow policy, emphasizing that no individual is above the law.

“Corruption issues should not be turned into a theatre of the absurd. Those who harbour criminal suspects will face punishment, as it is also a criminal offence,” the Commission warned.

The statement reads in full:

Yahaya Bello Must Have his Day in Court

It is public knowledge that a former governor of Kogi State, Mr. Yahaya Bello had made several unsuccessful attempts to throw spanners in his ongoing trial through some irresponsible and utterly rascally efforts. The appropriate place of surrender would be before Justice Emeka Nwite of the Federal High Court, Abuja, before whom his legal team had undertaken to produce him to answer to the 18-count charges of money laundering preferred against him by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC.

Yahaya Bello should be more interested in clearing his name than playing the victim and crying persecution, where none exists. To even insinuate that he was the target of a phantom assassination attempt because the EFCC made efforts to effect his arrest at the Kogi State Governor’s Lodge where he had been hiding, is preposterous. It is the first time in the Commission’s more than two decades existence that such a jejune claim would be made. This is no more than scaremongering, intended to scandalise the Commission.

But EFCC is not deterred by this, and other shenanigans by the ex-governor. The Commission remains committed to ensuring that the law takes its course in the money laundering charges already filed against Yahaya Bello in Court.

EFCC is eager to engage the former governor in the courtroom where the avalanche of evidence so painstakingly assembled can be presented and arguments marshalled for justice to be served to all parties involved in this saga. The true test of Yahaya Bello’s willingness to abide by the law in the criminal proceedings instituted against him at the Federal High Court Abuja by the EFCC is to present himself to the court in obedience to the order of Justice Nwite. His presence in court is the only step that will convince Nigerians that his touted submission to the EFCC which was widely reported in the media on September 18, was not a stunt.

BREAKING: Presidency Speaks on Moves to Reduce Fuel Prices Amid NNPC, Local Refinery Dispute

by Folarin Kehinde September 25, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Government has distanced itself from the ongoing controversy between the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) and Dangote Refinery over petrol pricing.

Leading reporters understands that there are expectations from some quarters that involvement by the government would lead to a reduced price of the commodity.

President Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, made the fresh declaration while briefing State House correspondents in Abuja.

Onanuga clarified that since the petroleum market has been deregulated, both Dangote and NNPCL, as oil refiners and marketers, are free to set their market prices.

“The PMS price regime has been deregulated. Dangote is a private company. NNPCL, you should not forget, is a limited liability company,” Onanuga stated. “Whatever controversy both of them are having is their own problem.”

The controversy began when NNPCL announced that Dangote Refinery sold petrol to them at N898 per litre. However, Dangote countered that the price was misleading and that his refinery sold petrol to NNPCL at a lower rate than the cost of imported fuel.

Aliko Dangote, CEO of Dangote Refinery eventually added recently that the removal of subsidy is totally dependent on the government, not on his company.

The lowest pump price of petrol currently stands at N895 per litre.

Onanuga reiterated that the government will not interfere in the dispute, allowing both parties to operate according to market forces. “You can see that the private marketers have said that they find the NNPC or Dangote price too much for them, and they may resort to importing fuel.”

“If NNPC fuel is too much, the public market can go to the market and bring in their own fuel and sell at the price that they think is very reasonable and profitable for them,” Onanuga noted.

Comedian Ali Baba Welcomes Triplets at 59

by Nelson Ugwuagbo September 24, 2024
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Veteran stand-up comedian Atunyota Akpobome, popularly known as Ali Baba, has shared how his plan to have one more son with his wife, Mary at 59 unexpectedly led to the birth of triplets.

Ali Baba explained that his wife had a strong desire for another son, especially after their children had travelled abroad, leaving the house feeling empty.

The funnyman stated this on Monday in an interview during a podcast session, Leadership Podcast with Stephen Akintayo.

He said initially, she considered adopting more children but later decided she would prefer to have her own.

This, he said led them to pursue In Vitro Fertilisation, intending to fertilise two eggs, hoping for at least one successful pregnancy.

He added that things took an unexpected turn when one of the fertilised eggs split into two, resulting in triplets instead of their original plan.

Madam had always wanted to have a son. She had two daughters and we talked about it. So, I told her I didn’t want to be having school runs, joining Wizkid and attending PTA meetings. One truth is the net becomes empty when all the children have to go abroad to study and the discussion comes up again.

“By the way, she had said wanted to adopt two or three children to take care of them. One day, she then said instead of adopting, let’s just have our own. I was like ok but the way the economy is and she replied you said the economy is bad, I said yes and she said, have you stopped paying house rent for people I said no. She asked again, “Have you stopped paying school fees and I said no.

“We Will Review and Upgrade Abuja Master Plan” – WIKE

by Nelson Ugwuagbo September 24, 2024
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has reiterated the FCT Administration’s dedication to revising and enhancing the Abuja Master Plan.

This commitment was reaffirmed during a visit from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) representatives in Abuja.

Wike emphasized the administration’s focus on upgrading the master plan to align with modern needs and ensure Abuja’s continued growth and development.

This collaboration with JICA marks a significant step towards achieving this goal, leveraging international expertise to create a more sustainable and efficient capital city.

He said the project, under the Review and Upgrading of Integrated Urban Development Master Plan for Abuja, would be implemented in partnership with JICA.

“For us, be assured that it is a project that we are committed to, and we will do all we can to see that the project comes to fruition,” he said.

The minister promised the JICA team that all the expectations from the FCTA for the implementation of the project would be made in due course.

The former Rivers State Governor equally assured JICA of stronger collaboration for the development of the FCT, including satellite towns and environs.

Also speaking, the Executive Secretary, Federal Capital Development Authority, FCDA, Mr Shehu Ahmad, said the review of the 45-year-old Abuja Master Plan was crucial to addressing current challenges in the capital city.

“We are talking about supporting facilities in terms of infrastructure, water supply, power supply, and stormwater and wastewater drainage systems.

We are also looking at the need for a smart city for Abuja so that the city will be one of the top cities in the world.

Urban mobility has remained a challenge, and we are feeling that they should look into those areas to enhance it,” he said

Nigerian Army Discharge Female Soldier Who Accused Superior of Rape

by Nelson Ugwuagbo September 24, 2024
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Authorities of the Nigerian Army, on Tuesday announced that it has discharged a female soldier, Private Ruth Ogunleye, who accused a senior officer, Colonel I.B Abdulkareem, of sexual harassment.

Army specifically said the female soldier was eased out of the service on medical ground after the conclusion of its probe, adding that by discharging her, she’s entitled to pension and all other benefits for life.

Recall that Ogunleye had in January this year on her TikTok page via @Ogunleyeruthsavage1 accused Col. IB Abdulkareem, Col. G.S Ogor, and Brig. Gen. I.B Solebo, of making her life unbearable.

She particularly said Abdulkareem made repeated attempts to assault her, administered injections against her will, forcibly removed her from her residence, and confined her in a psychiatric hospital for several months for turning down his sexual advances.

Following the allegations, the ministry of Women Affairs waded into the matter and the Chief of Army Staff, Lt.-Gen. Tarooed Lagbaja, subsequently ordered a thorough investigation.

Giving an update about the matter at Army headquarters, the spokesman of the land forces, Onyema Nwachukwu, explained that the senior officer did not commit the offence levelled against him by Ogunleye.

Nwachukwu, a Major-General, stressed that the conclusion was arrived at after an exhaustive review of the facts, testimonies and evidence presented during the investigations carried out.

“Upon receipt of her initial complaint, which included allegations of sexual harassment, the Nigerian Army took immediate action. The matter was referred to the Nigerian Army Corps of Military Police, tasked with conducting a thorough investigation into the veracity of her claims.
