by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 21, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

President Bola Tinubu has nominated Dr. Bernard Mohammed Doro for appointment as a new minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The nomination follows the recent appointment of the former Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Reduction, Prof. Nentawe Goshwe Yilwatda, as the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Prof. Yilwatda, who hails from Plateau State, vacated his ministerial position after assuming his new role within the ruling party.

In a statement issued on Tuesday, Presidential spokesman Bayo Onanuga announced Dr. Doro’s nomination, noting that the appointment is subject to confirmation by the Senate.

‘They’re Protesting to the Deaf; Nigerian Government Doesn’t Listen’ — Farotimi

by Folarin Kehinde October 21, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Civil rights lawyer and advocate, Dele Farotimi, has slammed the Nigerian government over its handling of peaceful protests, saying its actions prove that Nigeria is merely pretending to practice democracy.Nigerian politics book

In an interview on Tuesday, Farotimi said the continued clampdown on protesters and court restrictions on citizens’ rights to assemble freely show that the country has strayed far from democratic principles.

“In a democracy, there should never be a need for police permission before a protest,” he said. “The police are only to be notified so they can provide security. When a court assumes the power to restrict peaceful demonstrations, it’s proof we’re not in a democracy, we’re only mimicking one.”

His comments followed Monday’s protest in Abuja, led by activist Omoyele Sowore and other #FreeNnamdiKanu campaigners demanding the release of the detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu. The protesters defied court orders and police warnings, marching with placards before being dispersed with tear gas by security operatives.

Farotimi described the idea of citizens needing police approval to protest as “completely unheard of in a true democracy,” insisting that the police are public servants, not gatekeepers of citizens’ rights.

“It’s absurd that citizens would need permission from their paid employees before gathering peacefully,” he added.

The activist also accused the judiciary of losing its independence and acting as an extension of the executive arm of government.

“Our judiciary is unfit for purpose. It does exactly what the executive wants and no longer serves the cause of justice,” he said, noting that “an order is only as valid as its lawfulness.”

Farotimi argued that only violent protesters should be arrested, not those demonstrating peacefully. Recalling his own experience of being prosecuted under what he described as a “non-existent law,” he said it reflected the dysfunction in Nigeria’s legal system.Nigerian politics book

Expressing frustration with the government’s attitude toward public grievances, he said:

“I don’t join protests anymore because I know they’re merely speaking to the deaf. The Nigerian state doesn’t listen.”

Reflecting on the 2020 #EndSARS movement, Farotimi said the government’s response, changing the unit’s name from SARS to SWAT, proved that no real reform occurred.

“They changed the name, but not the character. The Nigerian state changes nothing for anyone; it’s not interested in pleasing those who call themselves citizens,” he said.Nigerian politics book

by Folarin Kehinde October 21, 2025

The Ohanaeze Ndigbo has expressed its optimism that President Bola Tinubu will emerge victorious in the next presidential election scheduled to take place in 2027.

The faction of the Igbo socio-political group led by Sunday Udeh, its President General said the chances that Tinubu will secure a second term in office are quite high.

He called on both ethnic groups to stay committed to living in peace, harmony and mutual respect for one another.

Udeh warned residents of the state, irrespective of their tribe and ethnicity, to stay away from sentiments or actions that could create divisions.

He further called on the Lagos State government to ensure it adopts a sustainable approach towards maintain a healthy engagement with the Igbo community and other ethnic groups in the state.

ICA President urge Tinubu to Release Nnamdi Kanu, Warn of Rising Public Unrest

by Folarin Kehinde October 21, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The President General of the Igbo Community Association in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Engr. Ikenna Ellis-Ezenekwe, has called on President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to heed the growing calls from Nigerians for the release of detained Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) leader, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.

In a statement issued in Abuja, Ellis-Ezenekwe cautioned that the prolonged detention of Kanu, who has been held for over four years without conviction, is fueling mounting discontent among citizens across the country not just among the Igbo people.

“The cries for the release of the freedom fighter, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, have begun to reach a feverish pitch and may begin to pose a distraction to your administration if you fail to act timely.

“Nnamdi Kanu may become your Achilles heel if this unfolding ‘Free Nnamdi Kanu’ protest is not addressed properly in a democratic manner.”

Ellis-Ezenekwe reminded the President that Kanu’s detention followed his controversial abduction from Kenya and extradition to Nigeria, a move that has drawn condemnation from human rights groups and legal experts.

He urged Tinubu to exercise “executive wisdom” by resolving the matter politically and democratically.

“You are a clever and wise politician. No doubt about that. But you must also be a clever and wise President. Continued detention of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu is not wise or clever,” he said.

The statement emphasized that many Nigerians believe Kanu’s continued detention is unjust, particularly since no court has found him guilty of any crime.

Ellis-Ezenekwe argued that it is not illegal for citizens to agitate for their rights in a democratic society, and that Kanu’s case has become a rallying point for broader calls for justice and fairness.

“A true democratic leader listens to his people. The people want Nnamdi Kanu to be freed. He deserves justice.

“Nigeria belongs to all of us.”Ellis-Ezenekwe added.

NLC Gives FG Four Weeks Ultimatum To Meet ASUU’s Demand

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 20, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has issued a four-week ultimatum to the Federal Government to conclude ongoing negotiations with unions in the nation’s tertiary institutions.

NLC President, Joe Ajaero, made this known on Monday during an interactive session with labour correspondents in Abuja. The session followed a meeting between the NLC leadership and representatives of tertiary institution-based unions held at the Congress headquarters.

Ajaero criticized the government’s no-work-no-pay policy, describing it as an unfair sanction against members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) for embarking on a nationwide strike.

“We have decided to give the Federal Government four weeks to conclude all negotiations in this sector. They have started talks with ASUU, but the problem goes beyond ASUU,” Ajaero said.

He warned that failure to meet the deadline would prompt the NLC’s National Executive Council (NEC) to convene and decide on nationwide industrial action involving all affiliated unions.

“The era of signing agreements, holding negotiations, and then threatening the unions involved has come to an end,” he stated. “The so-called policy of no work, no pay, will henceforth be no pay, no work. You can’t benefit from an action you instigated.”

Ajaero further accused the government of being responsible for most industrial actions in the country, noting that “90 percent of strikes in Nigeria are caused by the government’s failure to honour agreements.”

Two AFP journalists covering #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest arrested

by Folarin Kehinde October 20, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Two AFP journalists covering the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital city have been arrested by operatives of the Nigeria Police.

The journalists – an American identified as Nicholas Roll and John, a Nigerian – were arrested during the protest demanding the immediate release of Nnamdi Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

According to Sahara Reporters, the journalists were arrested and their phones, cameras and other gadgets confiscated by the police officials.

Several other protesters who witnessed the duo’s arrest said the police had first fired tear gas at the reporters before arresting them.

It was also gathered that the police at some point returned their phones but refused to hand over their security gear and cameras.

The witnesses also stated that the operatives had argued that the journalists had failed to inform the police of their intention to cover the #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest.

“Their argument is that John should have informed the police that he was going to be there,” one of the witnesses said.

While the police have released Nicholas, John is still in Police custody.

The #FreeNnamdiKanuNow protest started in the early hours of Monday, October 20, with several supporters and members of the IPOB protesting the prolonged detention of Kanu by the Federal Government.

The protesters led by publisher and human rights activist, Omoyele Sowore took to the streets of Abuja despite warnings by the Police and the Federal Government barring them from converging in some key locations across the Federal Capital Territory.

Also, in a swift move, the Nigeria Police have blocked major exits and entrances into the FCT leading to a massive gridlock in the city.

JUST IN: Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyer Aloy Ejimakor, Others Arrested During Abuja Protest

by Folarin Kehinde October 20, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Security operatives have arrested Aloy Ejimakor, counsel to Nnamdi Kanu, the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB).

Ejimakor revealed this in a post on his X handle on Monday, stating that he and several others participating in a protest were apprehended by the police.

He wrote: “We’ve just been arrested — myself, Prince Emanuel, and others. We are at FCT Command CID, No. 1 Zaria Street, Garki 2, Abuja.”

Earlier, Ejimakor had accused security operatives of firing teargas to disperse peaceful protesters demanding Kanu’s release, adding that the fumes caused irritation to his eyes and throat.

The protesters had gathered in Abuja on Monday to press for the release of Nnamdi Kanu, who has been in the custody of the Department of State Services (DSS) since June 2021.

The demonstration was part of renewed calls on the Federal Government to obey court orders directing Kanu’s release.

BREAKING: Police disperse pro-Nnamdi Kanu Protesters with live bullets

by Folarin Kehinde October 20, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Protesters agitating for the release of the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, have fled the protested ground after combined security forces released live bullets.

The protesters, led by the convener of the #RevolutionNow movement and former Presidential candidate of African Action Congress, Omoyele Sowore, gathered as early as 6:50am around the headquarters of Women Affairs ministry.

Daily Trust reports that the security forces drawn from the Nigerian police, Guards Brigade, Department of State Services (DSS) and NSCDC, had beefed up security around Presidential Villa, since Sunday.

They mounted road blocks at strategic places leading to the Presidential Villa, National Assembly, Court of Appeal Headquarters, Force Headquarters and the popular Eagle Square.

Before the beef up, the protesters had vowed to march to the Presidential Villa to press home their demands regarding the continued detention of the IPOB leader.

According to report protesters marched around the Court of Appeal, the operatives fired different shots.

The protesters had earlier thought the police officers, who were preventing them from advancing further wanted to fire teargas cannisters at them but they fled when live bullets were being released from different directions.

Earlier, Sowore and some of the protesters had shouted at the police, saying, “Don’t teargas us! Don’t teargas us! Respect rule of law! We have rights to protest, we’re Nigerians.”

As at when filing this report, the military Armoured Personal Carriers from the Guards, Nigerian police and the DSS were still stationed at those strategic locations.

Barrister Cautions Sowore Over Planned Protest for Nnamdi Kanu’s Release

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 20, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

A legal practitioner has cautioned activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, against his planned protest to demand the release of detained IPOB leader, Nnamdi Kanu, warning that such action could jeopardize ongoing efforts by stakeholders to secure Kanu’s freedom through political and diplomatic channels.

Speaking on Complete Politics with Chukwuma Okeke, the Barrister said while Sowore has the right to lead demonstrations, the approach and timing of the planned march to Aso Rock are “misguided” and could be counterproductive.

He argued that several Igbo leaders, including the late Chief Emmanuel Iwuanyanwu, governors, lawmakers, and Ohanaeze Ndigbo chieftains, have already made extensive appeals to both the previous and current administrations for Kanu’s release.

The Barrister maintained that Sowore’s call for sitting governors to join the protest was unrealistic and disrespectful, noting that it would be inappropriate for governors to publicly demonstrate against the same government they serve under.

“You don’t expect a sitting governor to join a street protest. There are more decent and strategic ways to pursue Kanu’s release,” he said.

He further suggested that the government has no legal basis to continue detaining Kanu, insisting that several court rulings, including judgments from the ECOWAS Court, had favored his release.
However, he warned that any confrontational approach could harden the government’s stance.

“Nobody can force a government to act through intimidation. We should not jeopardize the progress made so far. The international community is already watching, and at some point, the government will have no choice but to release him,” he added.

The Barrister also questioned the timing of the proposed protest, which coincides with the fifth anniversary of the #EndSARS demonstrations, describing it as “a wrong signal” that could fuel tension and misunderstanding.

“Why choose October 20, the same day as EndSARS remembrance? It could be seen as an attempt to exploit past tragedies or promote personal ambitions,” he said.

He cautioned that protests at this stage could be misinterpreted and potentially hijacked, emphasizing that diplomatic engagements were still ongoing behind the scenes to resolve the matter.

Reacting to suggestions that Sowore might be using the protest to position himself politically or draw attention to his movement, the Barrister advised him to “carry on with his plans” without dragging Southeast leaders or politicians like Peter Obi into the campaign.

“He has the right to protest, but he should not call out Southeast governors or political leaders as if they are his subordinates. That’s an insult,” he stated.

The discussion also touched on allegations that some Southeast elites may have sent conflicting messages to the presidency—pleading for Kanu’s release publicly while privately warning that his freedom could trigger unrest in the region. The Barrister dismissed such claims, saying disagreements among leaders are natural and do not diminish the broader call for justice.

He expressed confidence that Kanu would eventually regain his freedom, citing past cases where prolonged detentions ended without trial.

“Mandela was in detention for 27 years. When it was time, he was released. Nnamdi Kanu will also be released when the time comes,” he concluded.
