Tragedy As Terrorists Kill 2 Soldiers, Village Head and 6 others in Benue

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 2, 2024
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Armed attackers reportedly killed two soldiers, a village head, and six residents in the Egwuma community, Agatu Local Government Area of Benue State, on Tuesday evening.

The assault, which occurred around 5 p.m., left the village shaken. According to local sources, the attackers also seized weapons from the slain soldiers, seriously injuring another.

A former member of the Benue State House of Assembly representing Agatu constituency, Sule Audu, confirmed the incident in a phone interview with reporters.

He stated that nine people, including the two soldiers, the village head of Egwuma, and six others, were killed during the attack.

Audu said, “The incident happened between 4pm and 5pm on Tuesday. The bandits attacked Egwuma through Akile axis, boycotting the road where soldiers were stationed.

They opened fire on people in their houses. They killed the clan head of the village and six others as well as two soldiers and carted away soldiers’ arms.

One of the soldiers was seriously wounded. They went back to the part of Agatu land that they are occupying; villages like Ogwumogbo, Ejuma, Akile, Okpogbolo, Okpiye, Echije.

It was on Sunday that the people returned home after soldiers assured them of safety, then they were killed on Tuesday. The affected village had long been deserted following the bandits invasion. They would attack and run back to the villages they are occupying.”

Audu added that the attackers likely came from Nasarawa and Kogi states, where they have maintained a presence in the area, terrorizing local communities.

He noted that while the soldiers had been instrumental in curbing past attacks, the situation remains dire.

When contacted, Benue State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) SP Catherine Anene said she had not yet received a detailed report of the attack.

War: UN Sec Gen, Guterres banned from entering Israel

by Folarin Kehinde October 2, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The United Nations, UN, Secretary General, Antonio Guterres has been declared a persona non-grata and banned from entering Israel following the latest attacks from Iran.

Israel’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Israel Katz made the declaration over Guterres’ silence on Iran’s latest attack on Israel.

On Tuesday, Iran launched over 180 ballistic missiles into Israel.

The Israeli military said it received no reports of injuries from the Iranian missile attack.

However, posting on X, Katz wrote: “Today, I have declared UN Secretary-General @antonioguterres persona non grata in Israel and banned him from entering the country.

“Anyone who cannot unequivocally condemn Iran’s heinous attack on Israel, as almost every country in the world has done, does not deserve to step foot on Israeli soil.

“This is a Secretary-General who has yet to denounce the massacre and sexual atrocities committed by Hamas murderers on October 7, nor has he led any efforts to declare them a terrorist organization.

“A Secretary-General who gives backing to terrorists, rapists, and murderers from Hamas, Hezbollah, the Houthis, and now Iran—the mothership of global terror—will be remembered as a stain on the history of the UN.

“Israel will continue to defend its citizens and uphold its national dignity, with or without António Guterres.”

JUST IN: Reps demand GCON honour for speaker, reject CFR

by Folarin Kehinde October 2, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Members of the House of Representatives, drawn from various political parties, on Wednesday called for the conferment of the national honour of the Grand Commander of the Order of the Niger on the Speaker, Tajudeen Abbas.

The House described as demeaning the conferment of the Commander of the Federal Republic on the Speaker and the GCON on the Chief Justice of Nigeria, Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, by President Bola Tinubu.

Recall that President Tinubu announced the conferment of different categories of honours on the nation’s leaders during his Independence Day speech on Tuesday.

Moving a motion of urgent public importance during Wednesday’s plenary session, the Deputy Spokesman of the House, Philip Agbese, described as unacceptable the treatment of the House of Representatives as if it were inferior to the Senate, in apparent reference to the conferment of the GCON on the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

He noted that in the order of protocol, the Speaker is ranked 4th, questioning why the CJN, who is ranked 5th, was accorded a higher honour.

The lawmakers, who took turns to make their contributions, said they were not speaking for Abbas as an individual, but for the Office of the Speaker.

Details later……

BREAKING: President Tinubu proceed on two week leave to UK

by Folarin Kehinde October 2, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu will depart Abuja today for the United Kingdom to begin a two-week vacation, as part of his annual leave.

A statement by the Special Adviser to the President (Information & Strategy), Bayo Onanuga on Wednesday, said he will use the two weeks as a working vacation, and a retreat to reflect on his administration’s economic reforms.

He will return to the country after the leave expires.

The president had celebrated Nigeria’s 64th Independence Day anniversary with a speech, where he said the Federal Government would introduce a 30-day confab aimed at including the youths in his administration.

The President said the modalities of the confab and selection of delegates would be designed as soon as possible.

“As we work to overcome the challenges of the day, we remain mindful of the next generation as we seek to galvanise their creative energy towards a better future,” he said during his second Independence Day Anniversary Broadcast since he assumed office on May 29, 2023.

“We lead today with the future we wish to bequeath to our children in focus, recognising that we cannot design a future that belongs to them without making them its architects.

“Considering this, I am pleased to announce the gathering of a National Youth Conference. This conference will be a platform to address the diverse challenges and opportunities confronting our young people, who constitute more than 60 per cent of our population.

“It will provoke meaningful dialogue and empower our young people to participate actively in nation-building. By ensuring that their voices are heard in shaping the policies that impact their lives, we are creating a pathway for a brighter tomorrow.

BREAKING: FG suspends sale of subsidised rice, workers kick

by Folarin Kehinde October 2, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

A cross section of civil servants in Abuja have expressed concerns over the suspension of the sale of Federal Government’s subsidised rice at N40, 000 per bag of 50 kilograms.

They made their feelings known after discovering the sudden disappearance of officials at different registration units for the purchase of the rice.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) recalls that the Federal Government promised to sell 30, 000 metric tonnes of 50 kilograms bags of milled rice to Nigerians at subsidised rate of N40, 000.

While inaugurating the scheme, Mr Abubakar Kyari, the Minister of Agriculture and Food Security explained that the move by the government was part of its intervention and efforts to crash the prices of food items in Nigerian markets.

NAN also reports that the sale commenced and lasted for over a week, before it was put on hold without notice, an action, workers that were yet to benefit from, decried.

Speaking with NAN, Mrs Mary Nwachukwu, said she was surprised and disturbed when she got to the point of payment at the federal secretariat and found out the officials were not on duty.

`I was encouraged to come to the registration unit at the secretariat, only for me to be told that the whole thing has been suspended.

“Nobody knows what may happen next and if the scheme will still continue,’’ she asked.

Mrs Kudirat Muktah, another civil servant who said she experienced delay in accessing the rice at the initial stage, frowned at the suspension order.

“I was here for two days to get my name registered, but because of the huge crowd, I decided to wait until it eases off, only to be told now that the exercise has been suspended.

“What I heard from the grapevine was that the suspension was as a result of the rowdiness and chaos at the registration and payment point.

“If they can adopt a better method of access to the rice, it will be better for us,’’ she said.

Mr Sylvester Edwards, equally expressed disappointment at the news of the suspension of the sale of the rice, even after he had struggled for two days to get his name written down.

“My brother, I spent two days here before I could register my name, waiting to be called for the rice, but now I am hearing another story.

“Although, we heard that the rice will be accessed through another method, but we cannot trust this government.

“The palliative rice will, to some extent ease the burden of hunger, so, it is important for the government to bring it back,’’ he said.

Meanwhile, finding by NAN confirmed that there was a new arrangement on ground for the purchase of the rice, to end the cumbersome process.

An authoritative source in the Office of the Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, who pleaded anonymity, said it was not the office that coordinated the scheme as speculated.

by Folarin Kehinde October 2, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

A destructive arson attack has struck the National Open University (NOUN) centre in Ezeoke Nsu, Ehime Mbano Local Government Area of Imo State, just two days after rumours circulated that the facility might be converted into an Internally Displaced Persons (IDP) centre.

The unknown assailants responsible for the fire also targeted the home of former Okigwe North Senator, Frank Ibezim.

The attack, which occurred around 9 p.m. on Monday, has sent shockwaves through the community, causing residents to flee for safety.

Reacting to the incident on Tuesday, Commissioner of Police, Aboki Danjuma, strongly condemned the attack which he described as senseless.

“The senseless and unwarranted attack, which occurred on September 30, 2024, at about 2100hrs, also targeted the residence of Senator Frank Ibezim, a former senator representing Okigwe North.

“This unfortunate incident reflects a disturbing trend of violence that undermines the safety and security of our communities,” CP Danjuma stated.

He added: “The Command stands firmly against such acts and will take all necessary measures in synergy with other security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators are brought to justice.”

Danjuma described the incident as a “senseless and unwarranted arson” and assured that the police will leave no stone unturned in investigating the attack.

“We will uphold the rule of law and ensure justice is served,” he emphasized. “No individual involved in this attack will escape the full legal consequences.”

According to him, the Command’s Tactical Unit has been deployed to identify and apprehend those responsible, adding that a thorough investigation is underway, led by the Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the State Criminal Investigation.

Emirates return to Nigeria two years after

by Folarin Kehinde October 2, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

After two years of pulling out of Nigeria, the Emirates Airlines flight has returned to the country.

The airline’s aircraft landed at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos on Tuesday.

Emirate stopped coming to Nigeria after its revenues totalled $85m in August 2022 was blocked by the Nigerian government over lack of forex.

At the time of filing this report, the funds have successfully been repatriated.

Following several diplomatic meetings between the Nigerian and the United Arab Emirates governments, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, also led a high-level Nigerian delegation to UAE on Friday to finalise negotiations ahead of the resumption of the airline’s operations in Nigeria.

The meeting also settled a new Bilateral Air Service Agreement between both nations to ensure stronger and mutually beneficial aviation ties.

PUNCH Online correspondent who visited the airport on Tuesday, saw arriving passengers being processed at the old terminal of MMIA.

Arriving passengers are currently using the old terminal while departing passengers will be processed at the new terminal.

This medium gathered that although scanty passengers flew the airline, passengers commended the airline services.

Leading reporters earlier reported that the airline had announced its resumption to Nigeria from October 1, 2024.

The relaunch flight with the number EK 783 was welcomed by a water cannon salute.

Commenting on the development, President of the Association of Foreign Airlines and Representatives in Nigeria, Kingsley Nwokoma, expressed joy with the return of the airline saying the development will be a win-win for both Nigerian and the UAE.

“We are happy with their return and we believe that with the return of their operations now, Air Peace too will be able to fly to the UAE because I understand they stopped because of the UAE visa ban on Nigerians.

“The more, the merrier and with this, they have also given more options to the flying public, Emirate is welcome back,” Nwokoma stated.

We’re fully ready for war– Iran to Israel

by Folarin Kehinde October 2, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Iran has said that it was fully ready for whatever Israel may come up with.

Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, Iran’s supreme leader, gave the order to launch missiles against Israel.

Daily post reported that Iran launched over 180 ballistic missiles into Israel early Tuesday.

The Israeli military said it has received no reports of injuries from the Iranian missile attack.

The Israeli military spokesperson, Rear Adm Daniel Hagari, said the country’s air defenses intercepted many of the incoming missiles, though some landed in central and southern Israel.

However, a senior Iranian official told Reuters that Tehran “is fully ready for any retaliation”.

Meanwhile, the Iranian mission to the United Nations has defended the country’s missile launches against Israel, calling it a response to “terrorist acts” by Israel.

“I’m still in politics, I’d be back 2027 – El-Rufai

by Folarin Kehinde October 2, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Former Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has vehemently denied allegations of corruption during his tenure, saying he is willing to swear by the Holy Quran to prove his innocence.

He also described politics as a lifelong venture, saying he would return to politics in 2027.

“I intend to return to politics in 2027 after completing my studies. There is no retirement in politics. By the will of Allah, we will return and continue serving the people,” El-Rufai declared in an interview on Freedom Radio Kaduna on Tuesday.

Insisting that he was not corrupt, El-Rufai said he was willing to swear by the Quaran and challenged his predecessors and current leaders to do the same.

“I didn’t join politics to steal money or enrich myself. I was satisfied with what I had before becoming governor,” El-Rufai said.

The former governor emphasised that his administration had been accused without concrete evidence, and his allies were being targeted by the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.

“I have left everything to Allah’s judgment. I have prayed and will remain silent on the issue,” El-Rufai stated, adding that he had instructed his lawyers to take legal action against those tarnishing his name.

El-Rufai’s denial comes amidst allegations by the Kaduna State House of Assembly that N423bn was stolen or misappropriated under El-Rufai’s watch as the governor of the state.

The former governor expressed his commitment to serving the people, even outside of government.

“You don’t need to hold a position in government to serve. We are still working with like-minded individuals who genuinely want to serve the people, not those seeking to enrich themselves.”

The Punch reports that the court adjourned to July 17 for hearing in a suit instituted by the former governor against the State House of Assembly and the Attorney General of the State.

El-Rufai had in June 2024 urged the court to quash the report of the state House of Assembly indicting him of N423bn theft.

The ad hoc committee set up by the Kaduna State House of Assembly to investigate all finances, loans and contracts awarded under El-Rufai had on June 5, 2024, indicting the ex-governor and some of his appointees of siphoning N423bn state funds.

The Assembly, while adopting the report of the 13-man panel, asked the incumbent Governor, Uba Sani, to refer El-Rufai, his Commissioner of Finance and other aides to relevant security agencies for investigation.

Hisbah bans sports betting in Kano

by Folarin Kehinde October 2, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Kano State Hisbah Board has banned all forms of sports betting in the state.

The Deputy Commander-General of the board, Dr Mujaheed Aminuddeen, made this known when he briefed journalists on the Hisbah’s renewed effort to fight immorality.

He said the Hisbah has re-launched ‘operation flush out immorality’ and its operatives would soon clampdown on individuals and groups bent on violating social order in the state.

He said in its efforts to restore sanity and discipline in the state, the Hisbah would arrest any landlord who rented out an apartment to unknown person(s) in view of the increasing cases of residential houses being used as lodges and motels in the city.

He stated that the board had further issued new rules regarding courtship, as henceforth, no prospective couples would be allowed to sit in tinted vehicles during courtship particularly in the night.

He pointed out that while street begging is prohibited by the law, female beggars who stayed outdoors late into the night would also be arrested.

Dr Mujaheed also announced that the Hisbah is disturbed by the increasing rate of prostitution among young girls and therefore warned that any woman seen in a tricycle after 10pm would also be apprehended.

He warned the public against violating any of the rules, which he said would attract stiff penalty.

He called on parents to be vigilant on their children, especially the females, and stop them from any misconduct capable of breaking any of the rules as stipulated across the state.
