‘It is now compulsory, All Students Must Graduate with 2 skills” FG

by Folarin Kehinde October 11, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The federal government said with the new curriculum set to roll out for Basic and Senior Secondary Education in Nigeria, every student must graduate with at least two skills.

The Minister of Education, Prof Tahir Mamman who stated this said the new curriculum is designed to incorporate knowledge, skills and values at Basic and Senior Secondary Education levels.

He stated this at the 68th National Council on Education (NEC) meeting in Abuja on Thursday, with the theme, “Innovation, Digital Technology Entrepreneurship: Tools for Educational and National Development in the 21st Century. “

He said the new curriculum is designed to incorporate knowledge, skills and values, especially with a special focus on skills, so that students, when they graduate, will have skills that they can connect with the economy and have a productive life.

He explained that today, they share a common challenge that the country’s educational curriculum is all in danger of becoming obsolete as technology is disrupting every industry, including education.

“A well-designed and effective curriculum determines a sustainable development, quality, and the relevance of education. This is the main reason why this administration places priority on the institutionalisation of curriculum development in the overall context of education,” he said.

The ministry, according to him, is implementing the Education Transformation Agenda of Mr. President designed to comprehensively overhaul the education sector to ensure quality learning, skill development, access and equity.

Prof Mamman reaffirmed that government has the primary responsibility of protecting and ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education at all levels for all learners.

“The government therefore, is committed to observing all relevant international protocols, conventions and treaties for the protection of our learners, teachers, learning institutions and facilities from attack and any other instrument on education, which the country has domesticated. “

Earlier, in his welcome address, the Minister of State for Education, Dr Tanko Sununu said any nation that is desirous of growth must in essence embrace the new culture of creative ideas, entrepreneurship and the use of digital technology.

He said: “To meet the challenges posed by new technological development, we must ensure that the educational system is structured and made more relevant to the needs and aspirations of the society.”

Sununu noted that new and relevant ideas must be injected into the system to enhance national development, adding that education at all levels needs renewal in order to meet up with the present globalisation.

Also, the Chairman Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund, Muntari Mohammed said digital literacy must be a fundamental component of the curriculum, adding that their leadership remains focused to ensure stability in the education sector.

The governor also approved the payment of N3 billion as death benefits to families of deceased civil servants.

The governor said the gesture was to provide relief to the families of deceased workers, adding that his administration had adopted proactive measures towards improving the welfare of workers.

While presenting the cheque to the representatives of the Nigerian Union of Pensioners (NU), Zulum said his administration is committed to settling the backlog of gratuities and an upward review of pensions for retirees.

Court rejects Governor Fubara’s 2024 Budget

by Folarin Kehinde October 11, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Court of Appeal has dismissed an appeal brought before it by Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara seeking to remove 27 members of the State House of Assembly on account of their defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The Abuja Division of the court said Governor Fubara has no basis to bring out the appeal having withdrawn his opposition to the case of the pro-Wike lawmakers at the Federal High Court.

Justice Olubunmi Oyewole, who delivered the lead judgment held that the governor, having withdrawn from the case cannot claim to be aggrieved with the judgment of the federal high court.

Consequently, the Court of Appeal barred Fubara from intervening with affairs of the House of Assembly.

The appellate court also barred him from withholding the House of Assembly fund and removing the Clerk and Deputy Clerk from the House.

Similarly, the Court of Appeal ordered him to re-present the budget of the State to the House under the recognised Speaker as contained in the judgment of Justice James Omotosho of the federal high court.

Justice Oyewole said that the blunder of Fubara in withdrawing from the suit in the federal high court cannot be redeemed by any known advocacy.

Justice Oyewole also held that the appeal of the governor has no utilitarian value as it cannot confer any advantage on him having lost his legal rights by admitting all issues raised against him with his voluntary withdrawal from the suit.

By coming to the court, Justice Oyewole said that Fubara was approbating and reprobating and blowing hot and cold at the same time, adding that such conduct had no basis in law as parties must be consistent in their approach to court matters.

He therefore voided and set aside the passage of the 2024 budget by 4 out of 32 members on the ground of illegality that must not be allowed in a democratic setting.

The court also held that Fubara engaged in executive recklessness that are unknown to law by presenting budget to only 4 members and signing same to law under 24 hours.

BREAKING: Bishops David Abioye, Thomas Aremu to retire from Living Faith Church

by Folarin Kehinde October 11, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Living Faith Church, also known as Winners Chapel, is preparing to bid farewell to two of its most prominent leaders, Bishop David Olatunji Abioye and Bishop Thomas Aremu.

Bishop Thomas Aremu’s valedictory service is set to take place at Living Faith Church Basorun in Ibadan, Oyo State, on Tuesday, October 15, 2024.

Just days later, on Friday, October 18, Bishop David Abioye will be celebrated in Lokogoma, Abuja.

Bishop Abioye has been a stalwart in the Living Faith Church since 1979, when he first met the church’s founder, Bishop David Oyedepo. He has served as a close confidant and right-hand man to Oyedepo throughout the years.

In 1987, he was dispatched to lead one of the church’s five original branches, and he was consecrated as a bishop in 1993, becoming the youngest bishop of a fully-fledged church in recorded history at just 32 years old.

Bishop Aremu, on the other hand, transitioned into full-time ministry after a successful career as an accountant. He is notable for being the only remaining bishop among the seven consecrated in November 1999 at Garden of Faith in Kaduna.

The retirement of the influential leaders aligns with the recent revisions to the church’s operational manual, known as the Mandate.

The updated guidelines now stipulate a retirement age of 58 for church leaders, a departure from the previous age of 60.

Only the founder, Bishop Oyedepo, is granted a lifetime service privilege, while future leaders will serve for a maximum of two terms of seven years each, subject to Board of Trustees approval.

BREAKING: PDP Suspends Spokesman, Legal Adviser

by Folarin Kehinde October 11, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has suspended its National Publicity Secretary, Debo Ologunagba, and National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade, SAN.

The suspension was announced by the PDP National Director of Publicity, Chinwe Nnorom, in a statement issued early Friday.

Leading reporters reports that Ologunagba and Ajibade recently emerged as key voices, urging the National Chairman, Umar Damagum, to adhere to the party’s constitution, especially in the crisis rocking the Rivers State chapter of the party.

The NWC directed Ologunagba and Ajibade to step aside, citing the need to investigate concerns raised against them.

“The National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) arising from its 593rd Meeting today, Thursday, October 10, 2024, has directed the National Publicity Secretary (NPS), Hon Debo Ologunagba and National Legal Adviser (NLA), Kamaldeen Adeyemi Ajibade, SAN, to step aside,” the statement read in part.

A committee led by Deputy National Chairman (South) Taofeek Arapaja has been constituted to investigate the issues raised against the suspended officers. The committee will operate in accordance with the party’s constitution, the statement added.

Meanwhile, Ibrahim Abdullahi Manga will serve as Acting National Publicity Secretary, while Okechukwu Osuoha will act as Acting National Legal Adviser, effective from today, October 11, 2024.

In a surprising turn of events, a faction of the NWC has also suspended the National Chairman, Umar Damagum, and National Secretary, Samuel Anyanwu, citing anti-party activities. The faction alleged that Damagum and Anyanwu’s actions violated the party’s constitution and their oath of office.

BREAKING: Tinubu’s Wife Denies Husband’s Role in Economic Hardship, Says He’s Already Rich

by Folarin Kehinde October 10, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has defended her husband, President Bola Tinubu, against allegations of having a hand in the country’s economic hardship.

POLITICS NIGERIA reports that Oluremi Tinubu made the remarks while speaking at the Palace of Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi on Thursday.

Mrs. Tinubu said that President Tinubu should not be blamed for the current economic challenges.

Mrs. Tinubu emphasized that the Tinubu administration is still in its early stages and should not be held responsible for the current economic situation.

She said, “We are just two years into our administration, we are not the cause of the current situation, we are trying to fix it and secure the future.

“We know that subsidy has been removed but with God on our side in the next two years Nigeria will be greater than this. Those who attempted removing subsidy before could not see it through. But with your prayers in the next two years, we will build a nation for the future.”

She also praised her husband’s character, saying he is not greedy and is already rich. He thanked God for making him Nigeria’s president.

“We give glory to God for our status, myself and my husband, we are not greedy but we thank God for what God has done for us. It is not common for rich people to get to this seat but I am grateful to God, we can not disappoint Nigeria and with the help of God, we are getting to the promised land in no distant time,” she said.

Nigerians have been struggling with economic hardship since the removal of fuel subsidy by the Tinubu administration.

This has led to an increase in petrol prices from N198 to about N1,300. The floating of the foreign exchange market and removal of petrol subsidy have resulted in inflation, poverty, and increased unemployment.

Critics argue that President Tinubu’s reforms were implemented without considering their impact on vulnerable citizens.

Meanwhile, during her visit, Mrs. Tinubu donated N1 billion to Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) for its development and advancement. She also inaugurated a hostel and 2.7-kilometer road donated to the university by the Ooni of Ife and named after her.

On his part, the Ooni of Ife commended Mrs. Tinubu for serving as a role model to young Nigerians since her days as First Lady of Lagos State. He recalled her New Era Initiative, which provided opportunities for young secondary school students to become governors in Lagos State.

Tinubu’s govt secures fresh $6.45bn loan from W’Bank as Nigeria’s debt profile swells

by Folarin Kehinde October 10, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Government of Nigeria, under President Bola Tinubu, has secured loans totalling $6.45 billion from the World Bank within just 16 months.

This total has surged following the recent approval of three new loans worth $1.57 billion for various development projects nationwide.

The latest loans are part of a broader trend, as the World Bank has approved no fewer than 36 loan requests to Nigeria, amounting to an eye-watering $24.088 billion over the last five years.

These funds address pressing issues such as infrastructure decay, unemployment, and social welfare, yet they raise concerns about Nigeria’s escalating debt profile and the sustainability of such financial commitments.

“While many Nigerians understand the need for borrowing due to limited resources, there is palpable frustration regarding past loans, which have yet to yield visible improvements,” said a concerned citizen.

With infrastructure decay persisting, the new loans for initiatives such as power generation ($750 million), women’s empowerment ($500 million), and girls’ education ($700 million) appear insufficient for addressing the nation’s urgent needs.

The World Bank’s recent approvals include $2.25 billion for economic stabilization and resource mobilization projects, with notable allocations for the Primary Healthcare Provision Strengthening Programme and climate resilience initiatives.

“These projects will significantly enhance human capital and build resilience against climate change, including floods and droughts,” a World Bank representative stated.

An analysis of the World Bank’s lending history reveals that Nigeria received loans worth $6.36 billion in 2020 alone, with subsequent years seeing varying loan amounts.

In 2021, the government secured $3.2 billion for six projects, while $1.26 billion was approved in 2022. The loan requests surged in 2023 to $2.7 billion and reached $3.82 billion in 2024, with more anticipated before year-end.

The ongoing debt crisis is becoming increasingly alarming. Data from the Debt Management Office indicates that Nigeria’s total debt owed to the World Bank stands at $15.59 billion as of March 31, 2024.

Furthermore, the country’s debt servicing costs skyrocketed to N6.04 trillion in the first half of 2024, marking a staggering increase of 68.8% from N3.58 trillion during the same period last year.

This surge is largely attributed to the depreciation of the naira, which has heightened the burden of foreign debt repayments.

Critics argue that the government’s focus on borrowing may not solve Nigeria’s chronic financial issues.

“We need to see real changes and benefits from these loans; otherwise, we are simply digging ourselves deeper into debt,” remarked an economist.

With debt repayment consuming a significant portion of national resources, the Tinubu administration faces a precarious balancing act between financing development and ensuring economic stability.

As the World Bank continues to approve substantial loans for Nigeria, the implications for the country’s economic future remain to be seen.

The need for transparency and accountability in the utilization of these funds is more crucial than ever, as citizens and analysts alike await the tangible benefits that these investments promise to deliver.

South Korean investors to build four refineries in Nigeria — FG

by Folarin Kehinde October 10, 2024
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Federal Government announced on Tuesday that a consortium of South Korean investors is set to build four refineries in Nigeria, each with a capacity of 100,000 barrels.

This development was revealed by the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri, during the inaugural summit organized by the Crude Oil Refineries Owners Association of Nigeria in Lagos.

Lokpobiri emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering a conducive environment for investment in the refining sector. He disclosed that approval has been granted to welcome the consortium, although he did not disclose its name.

“We are promoting the establishment of limited refineries by ensuring an open investment climate. Recently, we approved the invitation of a South Korean consortium intending to build four model refineries, each with a capacity of 100,000 barrels, across different locations in Nigeria,” he stated.

The minister explained that the government is adopting a public-private partnership model to attract investments in both the midstream and downstream oil and gas sectors. This strategy aims to facilitate the creation of additional modular and mega refineries.

Lokpobiri expressed confidence that these initiatives would bolster energy security in Nigeria, as the government is receptive to equity investments in both modular and new refinery projects.

He highlighted the efforts of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission in developing domestic crude supply obligation guidelines, which aim to ensure transparency within the oil industry and guarantee access to feedstock for local refineries.

In addition, he noted, “We are collaborating with stakeholders to effectively implement the Modular Refinery Committee’s recommendations, which will provide special concessions to local refinery owners and secure feedstock for their operations.”

Lokpobiri further stated, “We are committed to fully deregulating the downstream sector and will establish a framework to mitigate its impact on the economically vulnerable.”

The ministry is also facilitating easier access to tax exemptions and other incentives related to the importation of refinery equipment, which forms part of its strategy to make Nigeria self-sufficient in petroleum production and establish it as Africa’s refining hub.

He mentioned that the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA) has led to the creation of the petroleum ministry and the National Gas Infrastructure Fund, with plans to allocate part of the fund to support refinery infrastructure development, similar to initiatives in the gas value chain.

“To achieve this, we will initiate a review of the PIA. Additionally, CORAN should spearhead this campaign. We are prioritizing partnerships with international institutions through the Petroleum Technology Development Fund and the Nigerian Content Development and Monitoring Board to enhance knowledge transfer for refinery operations and invest in research and development for technological advancements in the sector,” he added.

Finally, Lokpobiri revealed that to combat crude oil theft and illegal refining activities, the ministry has established an international emergency committee focused on developing home-grown solutions for refining in Nigeria.
