Nigerian Goalie Uzoho Stun Fans Against Manchester United

by Folarin Kehinde October 14, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Fans have heaped praise on Omonia Nicosia goalkeeper Francis Uzoho after his stunning display in his side’s 1-0 defeat against Manchester United on Thursday at Old Trafford.

The Cypriot outfit were on the back foot for the majority of the Europa League clash, but United could not find a way through until an added time Scott McTominay strike, as Uzoho pulled off a string of fine saves to keep the hosts at bay.

It was a frustrating evening for the Red Devils as Uzoho somehow denied Cristiano Ronaldo and co, and BT Sport pundit Hargreaves hailed the Nigerian shot-stopper, who happens to be a United fan, after the game.

Uzoho made his first save of the match inside the opening two minutes when he tipped Marcus Rashford’s curling effort over the bar.

Rashford continued to test Uzoho for the rest of the half, while the goalkeeper was also forced into action by Ronaldo, Antony and Casemiro, but there was no way past him.

At the start of the second half he made two eye-catching double saves in a matter of minutes, keeping out Antony, Rashford, Fred and Ronaldo.

By the end of the match, United had attempted over 30 shots on goals, but Uzoho denied them time and again. Co-commentator Robbie Savage was in awe of Uzoho’s display.

Unfortunately for Omonia and Francis, McTominay scored from close range in the 93rd minute to seal a 1-0 win for United.

History Made As Cristiano Ronaldo Scores 700 Club Goals

by Folarin Kehinde October 10, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Cristiano Ronaldo has made history after scoring yesterday against Everton.

He has become the first player in football history to score a 700 goals combined goals for club.

Ronaldo until yesterday hadn’t scored for Manchester United in the Premier League this season.

However, after coming in for an injured Anthony Martial in the 29th minute, he received a defence-splitting pass from Carlos Casemiro in the 44th minute and was able to find the back of the net to silence the Everton fans.

Having started his career in 2002, 700 club goals mean that Ronaldo has averaged 35 goals a season.

Ronaldo has played for four clubs during his career – Sporting Lisbon, Manchester United (twice), Real Madrid and Juventus.

He scored five goals in 31 appearances for Sporting, 450 in 438 matches for Real and 101 in 134 games for Juventus. In his first spell for United he netted 118 times in 298 fixtures for the club and in his current second stint has 26 in 48 matches.

It’s the latest stunning achievement in the forward’s career – either individually or as part of a team.

Ronaldo is also the highest goal scorer in international competitions as his record 117 goals for the Portuguese national team added to 700 club goals make him the official top goal scorer in football history with a record tally of 817 career goals.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s 700th club goal comes 20 years and two days after his first goal for Sporting Lisbon.

Tragedy As Hundreds Die In Indonesia Football Crisis.

by Folarin Kehinde October 3, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Over 125 people have died and more than 300 injured in a tragic football incident at an Indonesia stadium.

Supporters of Arema FC and rival Persebaya Surabaya, two of Indonesia’s biggest soccer teams, clashed in the stands after home team Arema FC was defeated 3-2 at a match in the city of Malang in East Java, police said.

Supporters from the losing team then “invaded” the pitch and police fired tear gas, triggering a fan crush that led to cases of suffocation, East Java police chief Nico Afinta said during a press conference following the event.

“It had gotten anarchic. They started attacking officers, they damaged cars,” Nico said, adding that the crush occurred when fans fled for an exit gate.

Video footage from local news channels showed fans streaming onto the pitch after Arema FC lost 3-2 to Persebaya Surabaya around 10 p.m. (1500 GMT). Scuffles can be seen, with what appeared to be tear gas in the air.

Images showed people who appeared to have lost consciousness being carried away by other fans.

The head of one of the hospitals in the area treating patients told Metro TV that some of the victims had sustained brain injuries and that the fatalities included a five-year-old child.

Two police officers were also among the dead because the crush occurred when fans fled for an exit gate.

More than 300 people were injured, according to Indonesian authorities, with fears that the death toll could rise.

Earlier on Sunday, the governor of the East Java province, where the incident occurred, said the death toll was at 131. National Police Chief Listyo Sigit Prabowo clarified the discrepancy of the previous higher numbers saying it was due to some casualties being recorded twice.

Indonesian President Joko Widodo, also known as Jokowi, on Sunday ordered all league matches to be halted until investigations were completed.

“I have specially requested the police chief to investigate and get to the bottom of this case,” Jokowi said in a televised speech. “Sportsmanship, humanity and brotherhood should be upheld in Indonesia.”

“I regret this tragedy and hope that it will be the last to occur in Indonesian football. We cannot have anymore (of this) in the future.”

John Mikel Obi has retired from Football After 20 Years Of Professional Career

Former Chelsea and Super Eagles Midfielder, John Mikel Obi has announced his retirement from football via his Instagram account on Tuesday, 27 September, 2022.

Mikel John Obi, born on 22 April 1987, is a Nigerian professional footballer who formally played as a defensive midfielder.

Mikel began his career with local club Plateau United, before joining Norwegian club Lyn at the age of 17 in 2004.

In 2006, he made a controversial transfer to English club Chelsea after Manchester United claimed they had already signed him.

He stayed with Chelsea for 11 years, before moving to China with Tianjin TEDA in 2017. After two years in China, he returned to England on a short-term deal with Middlesbrough, before joining Trabzonspor on a free transfer in July 2019.

Mikel moved back to England in August 2020 joining Stoke City. In a 14-year international career between 2005 and 2019, he played 91 times for Nigeria, scoring six goals.

In his Instagram post, he said “There is a saying that “all good things must come to an end”, and for my professional football career, that day is today.

I look back at the past 20 years of my career, and I must say that I am very satisfied with all that I was able to achieve and more importantly the human it has helped shape.

All of this would not have been possible without the unwavering support of my family, managers, clubs, coaches, teammates and most importantly my ever-loyal fans. You supported me through my highs and lows, even on days that I did not live up to your expectations. I say a big thank you.

I will also like to encourage everyone who I may have inspired one way or the other in the course of my career to never give up on their dreams, for every time you think about quitting, remind yourself why you started.

This is not goodbye, it’s the start of another journey, another chapter of my life. I look forward to what the future holds and I hope you will walk with me. Thank you.”

Roger Federer to Retire from Tennis

by Folarin Kehinde September 15, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Tennis legend Roger Federer has announced he will retire from the sport at the age of 41.

Federer has confirmed the last tournament of his illustrious career will be the Laver Cup in London, scheduled to be held at the 02 next weekend.

The Swiss maestro – who won a total of 20 Grand Slams, the third highest men’s tally of all time – retires as one of the greatest to ever play the game.

Federer’s last appearance came at last year’s Wimbledon, where he reached the quarter-finals. His final Grand Slam triumph was at the 2018 Australian Open.

He claimed 103 singles titles on the ATP tour and was world number one for 237 weeks between February 2004 and August 2008, which remains a record.

Federer’s decision follows a turbulent period for the Swiss star, who has undergone three knee surgeries in a desperate attempt to return to his former glories.

His injuries have limited his appearances on tour and he has played in just three of the 11 Grand Slams staged since the start of 2020.

Federer is set to feature in exhibition matches but the Laver Cup, where he will represent Team Europe, will be his last competition on the ATP tour.

‘To my tennis family and beyond, of all the gifts that tennis has given me over the years, the greatest, without a doubt, has been the people I’ve met along the way: my friends, my competitors, and most of all the fans who give the sport its life,’ Federer said.

‘Today, I want to share some news with all of you. As many of you know, the past three years have presented me with challenges in the form of injuries and surgeries.

I’ve worked hard to return to full competitive form. But I also know my body’s capacity and limits, and its message to me lately has been clear.

Breaking: Chelsea Sacks Thomas Tuchel As Coach

by Folarin Kehinde September 7, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Chelsea has sacked manager Thomas Tuchel after their 1-0 defeat to Dinamo Zagreb.

The Blues have endured a slow start to the Premier League season and saw their Champions League campaign get off to a nightmare start in Croatia on Tuesday night. New owner Todd Boehly has now acted fast to remove Tuchel from his position after a hectic summer of spending at Stamford Bridge.

A club statement read: “Chelsea Football Club has today parted company with Head Coach Thomas Tuchel.

“On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, the Club would like to place on record its gratitude to Thomas and his staff for all their efforts during their time with the Club.

Thomas will rightly have a place in Chelsea’s history after winning the Champions League, the Super Cup and Club World Cup in his time here.

“As the new ownership group reaches 100 days since taking over the Club, and as it continues its hard work to take the club forward, the new owners believe it is the right time to make this transition.

“Chelsea’s coaching staff will take charge of the team for training and the preparation of our upcoming matches as the Club moves swiftly to appoint a new head coach. There will be no further comment until a new head coach appointment is made.”

by Folarin Kehinde September 6, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Tyson Fury the present Heavy weight champion has called out Anthony Joshua for a title fight for the World Boxing Council (WBC) belt.

He took to social media on Monday to offer Antony Joshua a WBC heavyweight championship fight amid delays to his plans to face Oleksandr Usyk in a unification bout.

“Tyson Fury here, aka the Gypsy King, the WBC heavyweight champion of the world, as you can tell,” Fury said in a video posted to Instagram, wearing his belts.

“I think you’ve all heard that I’m going to be fighting soon, within the next few months, and I think that before I announce an opponent, I need to do this, just in case.

“Anthony Joshua, I know you’ve just lost a fight to Usyk and you’re beltless at the moment, and I’d like to give you an opportunity to fight me for the WBC heavyweight championship of the world in the next few months.

“You’re coming off a 12-round fight, so you’re match-fit, you’re ready.

“I’m giving you a few months’ notice, if you’re interested, I’ll send you the date over and we can have a rumble, a battle of Britain for the WBC championship.

“Let me know if you’re interested. If not, I will select another opponent. Thank you, very much, and good night.”

Joshua has now responded to Fury, telling him to contact his management and that he would be ready in December.

“Yea, calm,” Joshua posted. “I don’t do the online discussions just for clout, so if you’re really about it, shout @258mgt. I’ll be ready in December.”

A fight between Fury and Joshua has been rumoured for several years. Should it be arranged, it would represent a huge chance at redemption for Joshua, who had lost three of his last five fights after winning each of his first 22.

written by Folarin Kehinde

Nigeria’s champion sprinter, Tobi Amusan on Friday night won silver medal at the ongoing Diamond League Meet after breaking through at this year’s World Athletics Championship in Oregon, United States.

Still smarting from the record Commonwealth Games gold she won in Birmingham earlier in August, Amusan hoped to continue her superlative performance but met a resistant hurdle as she lost the gold medal to 2020 Tokyo Olympics winner, Jasmine Camacho-Quinn of Puerto Rico.

Camacho-Quinn got one over Tobi Amusan winning the women’s 100m Hurdles at the Diamond League in a new Meeting Record of 12.34s (-0.9).

Amusan finished second in 12.45s and qualified for Zurich, while US’ Tia Jones ran a new Personal Best of 12.47s to finish third.

The Diamond League is an annual series of elite track and field athletics competitions comprising 14 of the best invitational athletics meetings.

The series sits in the top tier of the World Athletics one-day meeting competitions.
