NFF blasts Dessers, faults Ekong after Eagles’ draw with South Africa

by Folarin Kehinde September 10, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Nigeria Football Federation has openly criticised Super Eagles striker Cyriel Dessers and faulted captain William Troost-Ekong after Tuesday’s 1-1 draw with South Africa in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Bloemfontein.

The Eagles, who needed a victory to revive their fading hopes of qualifying for next year’s tournament in North America, suffered an early setback when Ola Aina limped off in the eighth minute.

Matters got worse when Troost-Ekong turned the ball into his own net in the 25th minute to hand Bafana Bafana the lead.

Though Calvin Bassey headed home an equaliser just before half-time, Nigeria failed to convert possession into goals after the break, with substitutes Tolu Arokodare, Samuel Chukwueze and Chrisantus Uche all unable to break down the South African defence.

In its post-match statement made available to journalists on Tuesday by the NFF Director of Communications, Dr Ademola Olajire, the NFF singled out Dessers, who was withdrawn at half-time, for particular criticism.

“Cyriel Dessers, who had an unimpressive game in Uyo where he turned out to be a substitute that was substituted, did not have a better game as he was too slow to latch onto passes, could not win aerial balls and did little in bringing alive the Nigerian attack,” the statement read.

The statement also faulted skipper Troost-Ekong for handing the Bafana Bafana the opener.

“The Super Eagles’ fighting spirit was diminished for a period after team captain William Ekong inadvertently swept the ball into his own net in the 25th minute, wrong-footing Stanley Nwabali to give the Bafana the lead and great impetus,” the statement noted.

The federation, however, praised Calvin Bassey for his resilience after the Fulham defender grabbed Nigeria’s equaliser just before the break.

“Defender Calvin Bassey showed immense fighting spirit and resilience to get Nigeria back into the game with a minute left of the first period, when he ran with the ball upfront. The ball found Fisayo Dele-Bashiru, whose pull-out Bassey met firmly to nod past Ronwen Williams for the leveller,” the federation added.

But it reserved more criticism for the team’s second-half display.

Despite dominating possession in the second half, the NFF lamented that the Eagles “delivered little,” noting that substitutes Tolu Arokodare and Dele-Bashiru failed to convert late opportunities.

The draw leaves Nigeria with 11 points from eight matches in Group C, while South Africa remain top with 17.

The Super Eagles must now beat Lesotho and Benin Republic in their remaining fixtures and also hope rivals drop points to stand any chance of reaching next year’s World Cup in North America.

Bayer Leverkusen Sacks Erik ten Hag After Two Matches

by Nelson Ugwuagbo September 1, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Bayer Leverkusen sacked Dutch manager Erik ten Hag on Monday after just two Bundesliga matches, where the team earned only one point from a loss to RB Leipzig and a draw with Werder Bremen.

The decision followed a major squad overhaul, with key players like Florian Wirtz and Jonathan Tah leaving, leading to reported dressing-room tensions and tactical failures.

This marks one of the fastest managerial dismissals in Bundesliga history, amid growing frustration over the club’s inability to maintain momentum from their previous title-winning season.

I was accused of using ‘juju’ over unshaved armpits — Burna Boy

by Folarin Kehinde August 23, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Grammy-winning Nigerian singer Burna Boy has revealed that he was once accused of using voodoo, locally known as juju, because of his unshaved armpits.

Speaking in a recent interview with Apple Music, the Afrobeats star dismissed the claims as baseless and amusing.

Asked about a common misconception surrounding him, Burna Boy replied: “One is that I don’t like to shave my armpits. People think that it is like Samson in the Bible that [has] his power in his hair.”

He explained that some Nigerians have gone as far as suggesting his armpits are the secret to his success.

“There are some people that claim that my armpit is where my power is because I don’t shave. In Nigeria, you hear crazy things. There are some people that think that is some voodoo sht, like my power is in my armpits.”

Burna Boy added that the rumour was so bizarre that he once tried to investigate if such a belief could even be possible.

“I don’t even know how to explain it. It’s just some dumb sht that’s going on. I even tried to find out if it’s even possible,” he said.

K1 apologises over incident at airport

by Folarin Kehinde August 8, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Fuji music maestro, Wasiu Ayinde Marshal aka K1, has tendered an unreserved apology over the ugly incident at the airport on Tuesday, August 5, 2025.

In a statement signed by the singer, he tendered apologies to all concerned but firmly insists that he didn’t have alcohol in his flask but water.

He also tendered an apology to the Presidency, Aviation ministry, FAAN as well as Valuejet.

The statement in full below,

“The incident that occurred at the local wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport on August 5, 2025, involving my humble self and ValueJet Airline, was to say the least, unfortunate.

“Unknown to many, I suffer from chronic dehydration, and my doctor strongly advised that I remain constantly hydrated. This is why I always carry a water flask with me. And contrary to the negative narrative being circulated in some quarters, the flask I carried on that particular day contained only water — not alcohol, as wrongly alleged.

“For the record, I passed through two security screenings with the flask empty. The flask was only filled with water at the lounge area, just before heading to the tarmac. This fact can be verified by the CCTV footage at the airport lounge. More so, I hadn’t even boarded the plane, let alone being deboarded.

“However, I acknowledge and deeply regret the concerns that arose from the incident. It was never my intention to cause any disruption or violate aviation protocols in any way.

“My unwavering patriotism and unshaken loyalty to the Federal Republic of Nigeria have never been in doubt. Over the years, I have consistently used my God-given talent and platform to promote the Nigerian brand across the globe. I would never do anything to tarnish the image I’ve built over the past five decades, nor would I knowingly act in a way that could diminish the reputation of the country I love so dearly.

“That said, the incident is sincerely regretted. I remain committed to upholding the values and responsibilities that come with being a global ambassador of Nigerian music and culture.

“To the Presidency, Ministry of Aviation, FAAN, NCAA, ValueJet, fellow Nigerians, and my teeming fans across the world who have shown great concern since the incident happened, I tender my unreserved and heartfelt apology.”

17-year-old Yobe student emerge world best in English language

by Folarin Kehinde August 5, 2025
written by Folarin Kehinde

Nafisa Abdullah Aminu, a 17-year-old student from Yobe State, has been named the World Best in English Language Skills at the 2025 TeenEagle Global Finals held in London, United Kingdom.

Representing Nigeria through the Nigerian Tulip International College, Nafisa outshone over 20,000 participants from 69 countries, marking a historic achievement that has brought global academic recognition to both her state and country.

The TeenEagle competition is an internationally recognised contest that assesses English proficiency, critical thinking, and communication skills among students from both English-speaking and non-English-speaking nations

Nafisa’s win was confirmed in a statement by the head of her family, Hassan Salifu, who attributed her success to dedication, discipline, and the enabling support of the state government.

“Our daughter’s global success would not have been possible without the visionary support for education by His Excellency, Governor Mai Mala Buni, whose efforts have brought international honour to our state and nation,” Salifu said, as quoted by Leadership.

He also noted that Nafisa outperformed students from native English-speaking countries, a feat that, according to him, highlights her intelligence and preparation.

Her victory has sparked celebrations in Yobe and beyond, with her family extending appreciation to Governor Buni and the staff at NTIC for nurturing her academic potential.

“Nafisa’s success is a testament to the power of educational investment. Governor Buni’s commitment has not only transformed schools in the state but also positioned Yobe and Nigeria on the global stage,” the family added.
