Gov Otti Returns Light to 33 Abia Communities After 9 Year Blackout

by Nelson Ugwuagbo December 23, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, has restored electricity to 33 communities in Ukwa West Local Government Area, ending nearly nine years of power outage in the oil-producing area.

The power restoration project was carried out by the Abia State Government through the Abia State Oil Producing Area Development Commission, under the supervision of the Ministry of Power and Public Utilities. The project fulfills a commitment made by the governor to the affected communities in March 2025.

Speaking at the power switch-on ceremony held on Monday at Central Primary School, Obehie, Governor Otti recalled his earlier pledge to return electricity to the area. He also confirmed that Mr Promise Onwukwe, whose case he had promised to look into, had been reinstated.

The governor arrived at the event aboard the newly launched Abia Green Shuttle electric vehicle bus, accompanied by members of his cabinet.

Otti urged residents of Ukwa West to safeguard the electricity infrastructure and prevent vandalism, stressing that the protection of public assets was a collective responsibility.

“I believe that we have a responsibility to protect what is in our community. Nobody can do it better than you,” he said, adding that acts of vandalism are often carried out by individuals within the communities themselves.

USA Intensifies Aerial Surveillance in Nigeria Over Christian Persecution

by Nelson Ugwuagbo December 23, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The United States has intensified intelligence-gathering operations over Nigeria, conducting surveillance flights across large swathes of the country since late November, according to flight tracking data and US officials cited by Reuters.

In an exclusive report published on Monday, Reuters said the exact objective of the missions could not be independently verified. However, the development points to heightened security cooperation between Washington and Abuja.

The surveillance flights come in the wake of remarks by former US President Donald Trump in November, in which he threatened possible military intervention over what he described as Nigeria’s failure to curb violence against Christian communities.

Reuters also noted that the operations follow the kidnapping of a US pilot working for a missionary organization in neighboring Niger earlier this year, an incident that raised security concerns in the region.

Flight tracking data from December showed that the contractor-operated aircraft typically departed from Ghana, flew over Nigerian airspace, and returned to Accra.

The aircraft was identified as being operated by Tenax Aerospace, a Mississippi-based firm that provides specialized mission aircraft and works closely with the US military, according to information on the company’s website.

Kenya Receives Israeli SPYDER Air Defense in $26M Deal

by Nelson Ugwuagbo December 23, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Kenya has taken delivery of an Israeli-made SPYDER surface-to-air missile system, significantly strengthening its air-defence capability amid growing regional security concerns.

The acquisition, reported by Kenyan media on December 15, 2025, was financed through a government-backed Israeli loan estimated at about $26 million (approximately KSh3.4 billion), according to Treasury disclosures. The funding structure indicates a formal state-to-state defence procurement rather than a goodwill or ceremonial transfer.

The missile system is expected to enhance Kenya’s ability to protect strategic assets, including military air bases, ports, and other critical infrastructure, against threats from aircraft and unmanned aerial vehicles.

Treasury records further show that the same Israeli financing facility accounts for nearly 70 per cent of the Ministry of Defence’s development budget for the 2025/26 fiscal year, while also outlining Kenya’s repayment commitments under the external loan arrangement. Although some local reports have described the system as a political “gift” following high-level diplomatic engagements, official financial documents point to a structured and repayable defence deal.

The SPYDER system, manufactured by Israeli defence firm Rafael, is equipped with two types of interceptors: the PYTHON-5 missile, which uses imaging infrared and CCD seekers for passive targeting, and the I-DERBY missile, which employs active radar homing for all-weather, fire-and-forget engagements.

Designed as a highly mobile air-defence platform, SPYDER can engage multiple targets simultaneously and provides 360-degree coverage. Depending on configuration, the system is advertised to have engagement ranges of up to 80 kilometres, along with strong resistance to electronic countermeasures.

In its all-in-one configuration, the system can be mounted on a single 8×8 vehicle carrying up to eight missile canisters, with rapid deployment capability and the ability to transition from movement to combat readiness within minutes.

FG Designates Kidnappers, Armed Groups as Terrorists

by Nelson Ugwuagbo December 22, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Federal Government has formally classified kidnappers and violent armed groups as terrorists.

The declaration was made on Monday by the Minister of Information, Mohammed Idris, during the Federal Government’s end-of-year press briefing in Abuja.

With the new designation, acts such as mass kidnappings and coordinated assaults in farming communities will no longer be treated as conventional criminal offences but addressed within the framework of counterterrorism operations.

Idris said any individual or group involved in abducting citizens, attacking farmers, or instilling fear in communities would now fall under the terrorist classification and face the full weight of the law.

According to the minister, the decision puts an end to what he described as vague labels previously used to describe violent actors, stressing that anyone who terrorises Nigerians will be treated as a terrorist without exception.

He added that the policy shift would improve intelligence gathering, enhance collaboration among security agencies, and enable quicker, more coordinated responses to security threats across the country.

FG Denies Tax Discrepancies Claim, Says Version Circulating is Fake

by Nelson Ugwuagbo December 22, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Presidency has denied claims that the newly enacted tax reform laws were altered, insisting that reports of inconsistencies are based on fake or unofficial documents.

The controversy began after a lawmaker, Abdulsamad Dasuki, alleged that the gazette tax laws released to the public did not reflect the versions approved by the National Assembly, a development he said undermined his constitutional role.

The allegations sparked calls from prominent figures, including former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential flagbearer Peter Obi, and several civil society groups, urging the Federal Government to suspend enforcement of the laws pending clarification.

Addressing the issue on Channels Television’s Morning Brief on Monday, Chairman of the Presidential Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms Committee, Taiwo Oyedele, rejected the claims, stating that the materials circulating online were not the official copies.

According to Oyedele, comparisons being made between the purported gazetted laws and the bills passed by lawmakers are premature, as the final harmonised versions certified by the Clerk of the National Assembly have not been released to the public.

He stressed that the authority to confirm the exact content of the bills forwarded to the President rests solely with the National Assembly.

IGP Deploys Police Special Force Nationwide Ahead of NLC Planned Protest

by Nelson Ugwuagbo December 17, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Ahead of today’s planned nationwide protests organized by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), the inspector general of police, Kayode Egbetokun ohas deployed special forces and tactical teams across the country to ensure a peaceful demonstration.

State police commands, in separate interviews on Tuesday, confirmed their preparedness to prevent violence and curb the activities of miscreants and alleged political hirelings who may attempt to disrupt the rallies.

The NLC had earlier insisted that it would proceed with the nationwide protests, which were called to draw attention to worsening insecurity and other unresolved labour-related issues.

Speaking on the level of mobilisation, the NLC spokesperson, Benson Upah, confirmed that affiliate unions have been mobilised nationwide. “We are going on with the protest across the country,” he said.

Upah further warned that any attempt to obstruct the National Day of Protest and Mourning could trigger a nationwide indefinite strike.

FRSC to Prosecute TikTok Influencer Peller Over Reckless Driving Incident

by Nelson Ugwuagbo December 15, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced plans to prosecute popular TikTok influencer Habeeb Hamzat, widely known as Peller, over a road traffic crash linked to reckless driving.

The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, raised concerns over what he described as a growing trend of dangerous road behaviour among celebrities, social media influencers and content creators, warning that such actions pose serious risks to public safety and undermine national road safety efforts.

The development follows the circulation of a video on social media showing Peller live-streaming while driving, an act the FRSC said reportedly resulted in a traffic accident.

In a statement issued on Monday and signed by the FRSC spokesperson, Olusegun Ogungbemide, Mohammed condemned the conduct as unlawful and hazardous, noting that it could have led to severe injuries or loss of life.

According to the Corps Marshal, the incident “serves as a grim reminder that fame does not confer immunity from the law, nor does it excuse dangerous behaviour on public roads.”

He stressed that live streaming, content creation, recording, or any activity that distracts a driver while driving constitutes a direct violation of established traffic regulations and endangers not only the driver but other road users.

Mohammed further stated that such actions undermine ongoing national efforts to reduce road traffic crashes and fatalities.

Consequently, he directed the Lagos State Sector Commander of the FRSC to commence prosecution proceedings against the individual involved for reckless driving, use of a mobile phone while driving, and distracted driving, in line with existing traffic laws.

Opposition Coalition Accuses Tinubu Government of Politicising EFCC Ahead of 2027

by Nelson Ugwuagbo December 15, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

A coalition of opposition leaders has accused the Federal Government led by President Bola Tinubu of using the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) as a political instrument to weaken opposition parties ahead of the 2027 general election.

The opposition leaders said the alleged selective application of anti-corruption laws by the EFCC and other security agencies undermines the credibility of the anti-graft campaign and erodes public confidence in state institutions.

The allegation was contained in a joint statement endorsed by the Interim National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), David Mark; former Vice President Atiku Abubakar; Lawal Batagarawa; Bode George; Peter Obi; and former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), John Odigie-Oyegun.

Titled “The Weaponisation of the EFCC,” the statement accused the anti-graft agency of persistently targeting opposition figures for political advantage in favour of the ruling APC.

According to the opposition leaders, the trend reflects a past remark by former APC National Chairman, Adams Oshiomhole, who once suggested that defectors from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) would have their past “sins” forgiven upon joining the APC.

They said the comment, whether made casually or deliberately, has reinforced a troubling perception that allegations against members of the ruling party are often ignored, while opposition figures are aggressively investigated and subjected to intense media scrutiny without proven evidence.

The coalition called for the immediate removal of political interference from the EFCC’s operations, stressing that the agency must function independently and professionally.

“The EFCC must be insulated from partisan control and must not function at the behest of any president, political party, or faction,” the statement said.

The opposition leaders further urged the Federal Government to restore the EFCC to its original legal mandate, insisting that its responsibilities do not include selective prosecution or the harassment of political opponents.

Tragedy As 8 UNIJOS Students Die in Ghastly Accident

by Nelson Ugwuagbo December 11, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

At least eight students of the University of Jos (UNIJOS) were killed in the early hours of Thursday, December 11, 2025, when a trailer lost control and collided with a bus conveying them along Zaria Road in the Jos metropolis, Plateau State.

Eyewitnesses said the students died instantly alongside the bus driver. Two other students who survived the crash were rushed to a nearby hospital for urgent medical attention.

The victims were returning from a night outing around 2 a.m. in two hired buses when tragedy occurred. Near the Zaria Road Stadium area, a speeding trailer, suspected to have suffered brake failure, veered off course and rammed into one of the buses.

The force of the impact caused the driver to lose control, sending the bus crashing into an electric pole just before the Farin Gada bridge.

Authorities were yet to issue an official statement at the time of filing this report, while rescue operations and investigations into the incident continued.

ECOWAS Appoints Aliko Dangote as Inaugural Chairman of Regional Business Council

by Nelson Ugwuagbo December 11, 2025
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has appointed Alhaji Aliko Dangote, Chairman of the Dangote Group, as the pioneer Chairman of the ECOWAS Business Council (EBC).

ECOWAS President, Dr. Omar Touray, announced the appointment on Wednesday during the 95th Ordinary Session of the ECOWAS Council of Ministers in Abuja.

The EBC, an independent platform established by ECOWAS, is designed to strengthen the role of the private sector, stimulate sub-regional trade, attract investment, and enhance economic integration across West Africa. It is expected to serve as a bridge between the private sector and policymakers within the sub-region.

Touray explained that Dangote’s selection was informed by his extensive business expertise and the significant economic footprint of his enterprises, not only within the ECOWAS region but across the African continent.

He noted that momentum for intra-regional investment was increasing, citing recent economic forums such as the Forum Senegal Invest, the West African Economic Summit in Nigeria, and the “Invest in District Savanes” forum in Côte d’Ivoire.

“This growing appetite for intra-regional investment highlights the need to mobilise capital within our region to build our community, rather than relying on unstable foreign investments,” Touray said.

He added that with the scale of investments by business leaders such as Dangote, the region’s private sector could drive West Africa’s development if provided with the right incentives and opportunities.

Through the EBC, ECOWAS aims to convene private sector stakeholders to deliberate on economic integration and regional development, while facilitating stronger partnerships among private enterprises, government agencies, and ECOWAS institutions.
