Group Accuses Opposition Of Destroying APC Campaign Boards In Imo

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 31, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

A group, Onwa Progressives 2023, have accused the opposition in Imo State of destroying campaign billboards belonging to the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate and incumbent governor of Imo State Hope Uzodimma.

The group, which said it is disappointed and frustrated over the incident, described the vandalism as an attack on democracy and a blatant disregard for freedom of expression and political campaigning.

In a statement issued by the group’s chairman, Augustus Nduka, it called for a thorough investigation into the matter, with the hope of bringing those responsible to justice.

It stated that in the bustling heart of Owerri metropolis, the campaign materials of Governor Uzodimma were vandalised by alleged agents of opposition political parties.

They said the A-frame boards were strategically positioned throughout Owerri, serving as essential campaign tools to communicate the government’s achievements and programmes to the people of Imo State.

These visually appealing structures featured captivating designs and colourful messages that highlighted the accomplishments and future plans of the Uzodimma administration.

Nduka however said, “The governor has consistently stressed his commitment to peaceful elections and urged all political parties and their supporters to engage in healthy competition free from violence or vandalism. It is shocking to witness the reckless destruction of campaign materials belonging to the Governor. We awoke on a Saturday morning to discover that the A-frame boards of the Governor along Airport Road and some other areas in the metropolis had been destroyed by these agents of darkness, all in the name of politics.

“The preliminary investigation by our men revealed that the opposition parties are behind this destruction, and we strongly feel it is unhealthy for our politics. This act of vandalism is fundamentally undemocratic, and we implore the security agencies to intensify their efforts to ensure swift and effective responses to acts of destruction while upholding peace within the state. We also urged the Imolites not to express worry over the incident because the Governor is only focused on delivering democratic dividends and won’t be distracted by the antics of the agents of destruction,” he said in the statement.

70 corpses, skeletons uncovered near Abia cattle market – Gov

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 31, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Abia State Governor, Alex Otti, says 50 decomposing corpses, including 20 headless ones, as well as countless skeletons were discovered by security operatives during a raid of the forest around the Lokpanta Cattle Market in the Umunneochi axis of the Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway.

According to the governor, it was also discovered that the cattle market was being used by kidnappers as ransom-collection point.

Otti made the revelation on Sunday during the second edition of his monthly media chat in Umuahia, the state capital.

He vowed that no inch of the state land mass would be left to criminals in line with his administration’s commitment to protect the lives and property of residents and visitors to the state.

He insisted that the resolve of the state to make the cattle market a daily market was not targeted at any particular tribe in the country, rather it was aimed at revamping the security architecture of the market and its host community.

He said, “We have taken a stand to provide adequate security to Abia citizens and visitors because we know that no government can succeed in the face of insecurity. This government will not get involved in supporting criminals or allow them to occupy any part of the state.

“When we decided to occupy the Lokpanta Cattle Market in the Umunneochi Local Government Area of the state, we discovered 50 dead bodies, 20 headless dead bodies, men, women and children and uncountable skeletons. We also discovered that ransoms paid to kidnappers were usually dropped close to the market.

“But it was unfortunate that some people misinterpreted our action to mean that we asked the northerners trading in the market to leave the state. After our interactions with leaders of the northern community, we told them that anyone who was not in support of the moves we were making to secure the state must be a criminal. They saw reasons with us and quickly reversed the quit notice they issued to Igbo in the North.

“That’s why we have decided to make the market a daily market, people can go to the market and do their business and go home at the end of the day. The market will not be only a cattle market again, but it will have other sections for other goods like every other market.

“Those who live inside the market will now live among other people in the state outside the market.”

Meanwhile, the apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, appealed to the northern leadership in the cattle market to “cooperate with Governor Otti to fish out the criminal elements that dent the image of the genuine traders amongst them.”

Speaking with one of our correspondents, Ohanaeze National Publicity Secretary, Dr Alex Ogbonnia, dismissed the report that Otti had displaced northerners from the Umunneochi Cattle Market.

“Ohanaeze recognises the age-long trading relationship between the North and the Igbo and urges all and sundry to take advantage of Governor Otti’s security initiatives for the interest of all,” he said.

Businessman demands N1.5 million from wife in exchange for divorce

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 30, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Earlier, the complainant told the court that she was ready to return the N80,000 dowry she received from the defendant.

A businessman, Nura Ashiru, on Monday demanded N1.5 million from his divorce-seeking wife Zainab Bello, in a Shari’a court sitting in Magajin Gari, Kaduna.

Mr Ashiru made his demands after his wife asked the court to dissolve their union through Khul’i, a situation where a wife returns the dowry she received to redeem herself from the marriage.

”My wife caused me great loss. She destroyed my phone and took some of my belongings, a situation which led me into depression,” he said.

He begged the court not to give his wife custody of the baby.

Earlier, the complainant told the court that she was ready to return the N80,000 dowry she received from the defendant and prayed for the custody of their three-year-old child.

Bayelsa Poll: PDP Calls For Maciver’s Arrest Over Inciting Comments

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 30, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Bayelsa APC Deputy Governorship Candidate, Joshua Maciver

The Bayelsa State Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Governorship Campaign Council has called on the Inspector-General of Police and Director-General of the Department of State Services to immediately invite a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Joshua Maciver, for questioning.

Chairman of the campaign council’s Publicity Directorate, Hon. Ayibaina Duba, in a statement issued in Yenagoa, the Bayelsa State capital on Monday, said MacIver made inciting comments capable of truncating the peace of the state in a video now in circulation

Maciver, who is running mate to his party’s governorship candidate, Timipre Sylva, whose candidature was nullified by the court made the incendiary comments during a rally in Twon-Brass on Saturday.

The Court of Appeal last week upheld the decision of the Federal High Court in Abuja nullifying Sylva’s candidacy.

However, in the video that has gone viral on social media, the former militant leader, facing allegation that he broke jail after being sentenced for terrorism by a Federal High Court in Kaduna, urged the people to “throw into the sea anyone that misbehaves on November 11 and ensure the person(s) dies.”

The PDP campaign council strongly condemned what it called Maciver’s thoughtless comment, saying it had “the potential of throwing the state into anarchy before and during the November 11 governorship election.”

The PDP noted that “the APC leader was notorious for instigating political violence” and that his comments only confirmed what Bayelsans generally know about the party’s plot to “cause violence during the election.”

JUST IN: I have confidence in my Chief of Staff — Tinubu⁣

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 30, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

President Bola Tinubu on Monday said he has “absolute confidence” in the integrity of his Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila. ⁣
⁣
Tinubu said this just before the commencement of this week’s Federal Executive Council meeting at the Council Chamber of the Presidential Villa, Abuja. ⁣
⁣
His comments come just 48 hours after a report emerged that the CoS may be battling an integrity crisis following allegations that he has been “trading off appointments in the government of President Tinubu to the highest bidder.” ⁣
⁣
The report alleged a growing outcry among Tinubu’s loyalists who are insisting that “Gbajabiamila is eased out of the Presidential Villa.”⁣
⁣
Citing the appointment of 10 Resident Electoral Commissioners of the Independent National Electoral Commission, the report quoted sources who claimed that the name of Ekiti REC was replaced with the name of a former commissioner under the immediate past Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi.⁣
⁣
“Another source noted that President’s Private Principal Secretary Akeem Okunola, was already doing some of his (Gbajabiamila’s) work…the President was already putting up a team that will help the CoS,” the report said.⁣
⁣
But responding to the allegations, President Tinubu affirmed that “I have absolute confidence in my Chief of Staff, Femi Gbajabiamila. ⁣
⁣
“So, all campaign of calumny, the buck stops here! If I make mistakes, I’ll own up to them.⁣
⁣
“Like everyone in the country, I make mistakes. And when I make mistakes, I iron them out and correct them. Perfection is of God Almighty.”

Why Naira re-denomination will fail in Nigeria — Experts

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 28, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Against the backdrop of sustained rumors about the introduction of the Naira re-denomination by the current government, economy analysts and corporate chieftains have painted a discomforting picture of what the policy may entrench on the economy if carried out.

In the past month, there have been many insinuations from several quarters that the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, is planning to onboard the measure as part of its overall monetary policy package from the new team at the apex bank.

Re-denomination is often used to describe a process in which a country adjusts its currency by changing the nominal value which changes the actual purchasing power of the currency.

Though the CBN had denied the rumor many sources hinted that the apex bank has already consulted officially for the policy roll out and may have slated January next year for commencement.

Some experts who spoke to Saturday Vanguard also believe that it is either the apex bank is flying a kite to sample public opinion or they are actually about to announce the policy because ‘‘there is not smoke without fire’’.

Giving insight into the policy measure some of them, however, told Vanguard that it can improve price stability by making transactions more manageable and reducing the likelihood of hyperinflation.

But they also said it’s essential to caution that Naira re-denomination alone won’t directly impact inflation rates positively.

Some also noted that the talks about redenomination may be part of the struggle by the current administration to gain the acceptance of the people, but also explained that the success or otherwise of re-denomination as an economy booster depends on its implementation and the complementary measures taken to address underlying economic issues, particularly in the areas of price stability, foreign investment, and engagement with key stakeholders.

There could be elements of truth with persistence of the rumor – Adonri

In his own comments, David Adonri, Financial Analyst and Executive Vice Chairman, at Highcap Securities Limited, said: “The re-denomination of the Naira was first muted by Charles Soludo’s Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, leadership but CBN did not implement the plan. It has resurfaced again after Godwin Emefiele shelved it. When rumours persist for long, there could be elements of truth in them.

“However, since CBN has dispelled the rumor, we shall take their word for it but remain alert.

Patrons of local leather products as industry heroes

“On the surface, such a policy will match the foreign exchange rate with new value of the re-denominated Naira.

“However, the reality may not be the case. It is not likely to enhance price stability because Nigeria’s inflation is scarcity derived amidst severe shortage of hard currencies. The huge supply gap will make the program unsustainable.

“Under present economic conditions, re-denomination will be an exercise in futility. It could further weaken the Naira and reduce the purchasing power of consumers as producers will lash on the opportunity to increase prices.”

It would amount to further macroeconomic instability — Olayinka

Reacting to the alleged plan by the CBN to redenominate the Naira, Tajudeen Olayinka, CEO, Wyoming Capital and Partners said: “Since CBN has continually denied the plan to embark on such a program, I also don’t find the rumor credible.

“However, should they eventually decide to embark on that journey now, I will advise they delay such a decision till a more auspicious time.

“And the reasons are simple: You cannot embark on currency redenomination when you are still grappling with the difficulty of stabilizing the macroeconomic environment. Doing so means that you will have to repeat the program multiple times in a short period, as the effort would amount to further macroeconomic instability in the short term.

“The essence of currency redenomination is to strengthen the new lower denominations as the medium of exchange, store of value and unit of account, by improving on pricing mechanism in the economy, where rounding up of asset prices could be possibly avoided to stabilize the general price level.

“Doing it at the wrong time, when the economy is in a prolonged state of disequilibrium could be counter-productive, as instability may soon return.

“With the current poor state of Nigeria’s foreign reserves and multiple emergency foreign borrowings coming up to create dollar liquidity, it could send a wrong signal to foreign investors that Nigeria is in an emergency situation, and that proper forecast of future exchange rate might be difficult.
“As mentioned earlier, currency redenomination is good for an economy that is currently enjoying a semblance of macroeconomic stability, so that its timely adoption could promote further stability. Doing it at a wrong time will not be helpful to effective exchange rate post-redenomination.

“The government should continue to run its ongoing adjustment program, with the appropriate policy framework, to a point of restoring external equilibrium, before embarking on currency redenomination, in order to have a stable effective exchange rate, post-redenomination.

“Good and careful planning of currency redenomination program, with timely implementation, could herald a new beginning for macroeconomic stability, especially, a new era of a very low or near absence of inflation, due to improved pricing mechanism in the economy.”

Re-denomination can aid price stability, but … — Adebija

For Gbenga Adebija, Chief Executive Officer, Business in Nigeria/ Former Director-General of the Nigeria-German Chamber of Commerce, the talks about redenomination may be part of the struggle by the current administration to gain the acceptance of the people.

He also explained that the success or otherwise of re-denomination as an economy booster depends on its implementation and the complementary measures taken to address underlying economic issues, particularly in the areas of price stability, foreign investment, and engagement with key stakeholders.

He stated: “The Tinubu administration is evidently working to establish trust and credibility with the public. Therefore, it is crucial to grant them the benefit of the doubt on this matter until proven otherwise’’.

However, he gave further insight on what should happen in the event of embarking on such policy.

He stated: “Re-denomination, in isolation, does not impact the exchange rate because it doesn’t alter the actual value of the currency relative to other currencies.

“Consequently, the exchange rate of the (Naira) re-denominated currency with others should remain relatively stable.

‘‘Re-denomination can, however, contribute to price stability by simplifying price calculations and accounting which are usually impacted by high inflation rates.

“Re-denomination, by itself, does not influence the true value of the currency or the economic fundamentals of the country. It primarily alters the way prices are expressed and how people interact with the currency.

“Often, it serves as a prelude to broader economic and monetary reforms, such as addressing inflation or introducing a new, more stable currency.

‘‘Therefore, the success of Naira re-denomination as an economy booster depends on its implementation and the complementary measures taken by the Government and Central Bank to address underlying economic issues, particularly in the areas of price stability, foreign investment, and engagement with key stakeholders.”

Enabling environment should come before re-denomination — Azeez

Also speaking to Saturday Vanguard on the Naira re-denomination kite, Olowu Babs Azeez, National Treasurer of the Association of Mobile Money and Banks Agents of Nigeria (AMMBAN), noted that since CBN has not said it would embark on the policy it is not necessary to appraise the policy.

However, Azeez who is also the Chief Executive Officer of Obat Global Investment Limited, stated: “If such should happen, the government should first do the needful by providing enabling environment for business to thrive which would encourage foreign investors, promote small scale businesses and sizeable numbers of entrepreneur.

“This has to do with good roads, adequate electricity supply, business-friendly government policy, tax reduction, avoid unnecessary levels on business establishment, reduce export duty and import duty on raw materials but increase import duty on products that can be manufactured or produced in Nigeria in other to promote local production.

“I believe with this, the economy has lot to benefit and it will strengthen our currency.”

Focus should be on comprehensive economic reforms – Oyelaja

Abiodun Oyelaja, Chief Executive Officer Motion Yield Nigeria Ltd, said Naira re-denomination does not affect the exchange rate.
He explained thus, “The term “redenomination” is often used to describe a process in which a country adjusts its currency by changing the nominal value of its currency without changing its real value or the actual purchasing power of the currency.

“This is different from devaluation or revaluation, which involves changing the real exchange rate of a currency.

“Redenomination alone doesn’t directly affect the exchange rate. It’s mostly a psychological change, as the real value of the currency remains the same.

“Exchange rates are determined by various economic factors, including supply and demand, interest rates, and the overall health of the economy. It can however improve price stability by making transactions more manageable and reducing the likelihood of hyperinflation.

“However, it’s essential to caution that redenomination

Family demands justice for murdered UNIPORT student

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 27, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The family of the murdered female student of the University of Port Harcourt, Justina Otuene has called for justice.

Otuene was allegedly killed by her boyfriend at his residence in Ozuoba in the Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of the state.

Similarly, the management of the institution said it would not rest until justice is done on the matter.

Recall that the police had on Thursday paraded one Damian Chinemere, a 400-level student of Petrochemical Engineering of the same university who was arrested in connection with the heinous crime.

But fielding questions from newsmen in Port Harcourt, the Elder brother of the deceased, Osas Otuene said the family is highly devastated by the news of her death.

Osas, who is also a 500-level undergraduate of Chemical Engineering at the institution said his late sister recently turned 21.

While commending the police for their efforts in arresting the suspect, he said all the family wants is justice for his late sister.

He stated, “On Wednesday we got a call from someone that a dead body was reported at the Ozuoba Police Station that we should go there.

“So I reported to the Investigating Police Officer at Mini-okoro Police Station and together with some of my relatives we went with the Ozuoba Police Station and met the police officer there who confirmed the corpse.

“All we need is justice. Let the law take its course on the guy who did this to my sister and everyone else who is involved in this heinous crime because he was not working alone.

“She was the only daughter of the family, my dad is late. My mum is alive but she is distraught right now. So it is a hard one on us.”

Meanwhile, the Dean of Student Affairs, University of Port Harcourt, Chima Wokocha said the Vice Chancellor, Georgewill Owunari, has called on the police to do everything in its power to ensure that justice is done on the matter, saying the institution is embarrassed by the incident.

Wokocha stated, “I want to assure you that the university will not try to stop the process of law. And the university is also worried about its image with this kind of incident.

“The Vice-Chancellor has insisted that justice will be done because there is no student here who has the right to kill or get physical with anybody. It is wrong.

“The punishment for fighting or getting physical in the university is outright expulsion and in the University through then Vice Chancellor has told the police to do everything possible to unravel the mystery surrounding the death of this very promising young lady.”

The UNIPORT Dean of Student Affairs also called on parents to always advise their wards and children against the urge for quick wealth.

“They (parents) should warn their wards about this quick wealth thing and this thing about relationships. It didn’t used to be like that in those days.

“People used to be serious about what they were doing. These days you see a girl of 19, 20, she has strings of lovers. I mean what benefit, what gain?

“And so I implore parents and guardians to try and caution their wards, control and monitor them. And if they see their wards doing things that they ought not to, they should report immediately to the university authority if they are in UNIPORT or to the Police so that this kind of thing can be curbed,” Wokocha added.

by Nelson Ugwuagbo October 27, 2023

Award-winning musician, David ‘Davido’ Adeleke, has responded to his colleague, Oyindamola Emmanuel, known as Dammy Krane, after accusing him of unpaid debts.

On October 24, Dammy Krane claimed that Davido owes him royalties for their collaboration on the song “Pere” and urged the singer to settle the debt, citing the need to settle his daughter’s school fees.

But reacting on his X page on Friday, Davido referred to Dammy Krane as “ungrateful” while revealing that he never received compensation for three verses he rendered on Dammy Krane’s songs nine years ago.

The DMW record label owner identified the songs as “In Case Of Incasity,” “Gbetiti,” and “Izzue.”

He wrote, “I never got paid for that also my 3 verses I’ve gifted you all your dead career… oh yea plus my royalties, we charge now so that’s about $150k x3 a verse… also, house rent and food when u stayed in my house in Atlanta when you were homeless.”
