by Nelson Ugwuagbo November 20, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Osun State chapter of the Staff Union of Nigeria blocked the entrance to the Osun State High Court in Osogbo on Monday over what it termed as persecution of it members under the Chief Judge, Justice Oyebola Adepele Ojo.

They carried placards with various inscriptions such as ‘Judiciary staff deserves better,’ and ‘We are tired of oppression and stagnation,’ among others.

The protesting workers led by Gbenga Eludire said the Chief Justice has refused to pay their allowances and other emoluments in the last three years

He however said their protest was not born out of solidarity for anybody

It would be recalled that Justice Adepele-Ojo was last week Thursday, asked to step aside by the state House of Assembly pending investigation on allegations of corruption, gross-misconduct and abuse of office

BREAKING: A’Court affirms Benue Gov’s victory

by Nelson Ugwuagbo November 20, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Court of Appeal, sitting in Abuja, on Monday affirmed the election of Hyacinth Alia as governor of Benue State.

The candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party in the March 18 governorship election, Titus Uba had approached the appellate court to set aside the judgment of the tribunal which upheld Alia’s election.

At the tribunal, Uba among other things alleged that Alia’s deputy, Samuel Ode, presented a forged certificate to the Independent National Electoral Commission contrary to Section 182(1)(j) of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, 1999 (as amended).

He also claimed that Alia’s name was submitted less than 180 days before the election date, and Ode was also not submitted to INEC after the party conducted a further re-run primary election.

A three-member panel of the tribunal, headed by Justice Ibrahim Karaye, dismissed the petition on the ground that it was a pre-election matter and was statute-barred.

Ruling on the appeal on Monday, the appeal court’s three-member panel led by Justice Onyekachi Aja Otisi held that the Uba failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt the allegations of forgery against Ode.

Court sentences landlord to double life imprisonment for defiling tenant’s children

by Nelson Ugwuagbo November 20, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court on Monday gave a double life sentence to 65-year-old Igwe Ambrose for sticking his fingers into the private parts of his tenant’s seven- and eleven-year-old children.

Justice Abiola Soladoye ruled that the prosecution had proven Ambrose’s four counts of sexual assault by penetration and indecent treatment of a child beyond a reasonable doubt.

According to Soladoye, the defendant was a filthy old man who while ostensibly offering to assist the survivors with their schoolwork, caressed their breasts and touched them indecently.

She said the defendant had been identified and that the survivor’s evidence had shown him to be an unreliable, dishonest, and unworthy liar.

“The children decided to open up to their mother, who then informed her husband; he thereafter confronted the defendant and the matter was reported to a police station.

“The police visited the scene and the defendant was invited to the police station where he denied the allegations against him.

The judge, therefore, found the defendant guilty of all four counts against him, which were brought against him in violation of Sections 135 and 261 of the Lagos State 2015 Criminal Laws.

Mrs. Olufunke Adegoke, the State Counsel, called four witnesses: the mother of the survivors, the IPO, who submitted five exhibits, and two survivors.

According to the prosecution, the defendant committed the charges at Shagari Estate in Ipaja, Lagos, between January and June of 2021.

I was begging for accommodation when I moved to Lagos – Singer Shallipopi

by Nelson Ugwuagbo November 20, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Nigerian singer, Crown Uzama, aka Shallipopi, has recounted how several of his friends refused to accommodate him when he initially relocated from Benin City to Lagos to chase a career in music.

He said a group of boys finally agreed to accommodate him after he deceived them that he was going to stay for only four days.

The ‘Obapluto’ crooner said, fortunately, he got a gig at Port Harcourt which provided him with some money and he was able to support his benefactors in paying bills.

Speaking in the latest episode of the Zero Conditions podcast, Shallipopi said, “Before my song ‘Elon Musk’ blew. I came to Lagos and I was looking for who to stay with. Then I started contacting some of my acquaintances in Lagos who have been flaunting their flamboyant lifestyle on WhatsApp statuses because some of them had told me before that they like my song, ‘Elon Musk.’ I contacted four people but they all said I couldn’t stay with them.

“I eventually found someone that said I should come stay with them. I deceived them that I was going to stay for just four days. After I stayed there for four days, I got a show in Port Harcourt just with my song ‘Elon Musk’ which wasn’t gaining much traction then. But the fee was N50,000 and the organisers paid for my flight. The people I was staying with insisted on going with me. It was my first flight.”

He also disclosed during the interview that there is “a lot of money in music, even an up-and-coming artist with just one hit song can make so much.”

Shallipopi hit stardom after his song ‘Elon Musk’ went viral on social media earlier this year. He did a remix version with popular rapper, Zlatan Ibile which solidified the song as a street anthem.

'I didn’t like that my mom was a popular actress', singer Mayorkun reveals

Nigerian singer Adewale Mayowa, a.k.a Mayorkun, has revealed that he hid his mother’s identity for years because he didn’t like the fact that she was a popular actress.

The ‘Che Che’ crooner stated that he never wanted anyone to give me preferential treatment because he was Toyin Adewale’s son.

He made this known while speaking during the latest episode of the Tea With Tay podcast, hosted by actor Taymesan.

His words: “Growing up, my brother and I didn’t like the fact that our mom was a popular actress because we wanted freedom, but with her fame came fake attention and all.

“I hated being treated differently, not because you like me but because I am Toyin Adewale’s son.

“Even at my university, people didn’t know she was my mother for four years. I was intentional about this.

“My mom brought food to me at school once, and a girl saw her. I quickly ran to her to get what she came with, just so no one else saw her.

“Only my close friends who visited my house frequently knew who my mother was. So, I didn’t grow up as that boy who is an actress’s son,” he added.

It’s disrespectful to ask woman about body count – BBNaija’s Tolani Baj

by Nelson Ugwuagbo November 18, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

Big Brother Naija reality show star and disc jockey Tolani Baj has said it is disrespectful for intending partners to ask women about their sexual histories.

She said although she has a low body count, she doesn’t think asking a woman about her body count is right.

The reality star spoke in the latest Bahd And Boujee Podcast episode hosted by her and actress Moet Abebe.

She, however, said it was okay to ask partners about their relationship histories.

Tolani Baj said, “If a partner asks me about my exes, relationship history, I’m okay. But something I won’t answer is body count. I feel like, ‘What’s really your business?’

“My body count is not high but I still feel like it’s disrespectful to ask a woman about her body count. It’s not because I’m ashamed to say the amount, it’s just like, ‘Who do you think you’re to be asking me that kind of question?’”

BREAKING: Appeal Court Sacks Kano Gov

by Nelson Ugwuagbo November 17, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

The Court of Appeal, sitting in Abuja on Friday, sacked Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of Kano State.

The panel of Justices of the apex court upheld the verdict of the State Election Petitons Tribunal led by Justice Oluyemi Akintan Osadebay, which earlier sacked Yusuf of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) on September 20, 2023 and declared Yusuf Gawuna of the All Progressives Congress (APC) as the rightful winner of the March 18 governorship election in the State.

The Tribunal had declared 165,663 votes of Yusuf, who contested under the New Nigerian Peoples Party (NNPP), invalid on the grounds that they were not signed or stamped by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The governor’s votes were then reduced to 853,939 while those of Nasir Ganuwa, his All Progressives Congress (APC) rival, remained at 890,705.

Yusuf had rejected the tribunal verdict, which he described as “unfair” and “a miscarriage of justice”, and headed to the appeal court.

At the court, Wole Olanipekun, SAN, lead for Yusuf, asked that the judgement of the tribunal be set aside.

Kicking against the ruling on ballot papers, the senior lawyer said that was the first time in the history that a tribunal would annul an election over non-signing of the back of ballot papers.

He had said the tribunal erred, arguing further that, that was the first time that a political party would file a matter without joining its candidate as a party in the petition and the candidate would declared winner of the polls.

But, Akin Olujimi SAN, counsel for APC, countered him saying the Appeal Court stated emphatically that the non-signing of ballots amounted to electoral malpractice.

Court Sends Emefiele To Kuje Prison

by Nelson Ugwuagbo November 17, 2023
written by Nelson Ugwuagbo

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of Godwin Emefiele, former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to Kuje Correctional.

A Federal High Court in Abuja has ordered the remand of Godwin Emefiele, former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), to Kuje Correctional facility pending ruling on his bail application.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had arraigned the former bank chief on a six-count amended charge.

Emefiele was arraigned before Justice Hamza Muazu.

Mathew Burkaa, SAN, his counsel, had moved the application for his bail but Rotimi Oyedepo, the EFCC counsel, opposed on behalf of the Federal Government.

After listening arguments, Justice Muazu said he needed a little time to study the exhibits supplied by Emefiele to support his request for bail.

He thereafter adjourned the case till November 22, 2023.

Emefiele’s travail began after President Bola Tinubu suspended him on June 9, 2023, and ordered a probe of the apex bank under his watch.

Tinubu later appointed a Special Investigator to probe CBN.

Amid this probe, the apex bank released its audited financial statement, which showed that it was owing JP Morgan and Goldman Sachs a combined sum of $7.5 billion as of the financial year ended December 2022.

After months in custody of the secret police, he was transferred to the EFCC, which arraigned him in court and he was granted bail.
