Nigerian Institute of Architects Distances Self From Cases of Building Collapse

by Folarin Kehinde March 10, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

By: Kenny Folarin, Anyebe Victor

The President, Nigerian Institute of Architects (NIA), Arch.Enyi Ben-Eboh has exonerated the institute from recent cases of building collapses witnessed across the country.

Eboh while speaking in Abuja at the NIA 2022 Strategic Retreat noted that the institute is not involved in cases of the building collapses, but clients engage any architect to draw the plan.

“A lot of these buildings that are collapsing if you check, you will find out that our members are really not involved. What happens is that a lot of clients once they get an architect to design a building and to get approval, they just go ahead and build according to their own dictates.

“Most of the times they do not have architects on these jobs. So we want to appeal to the government that it should be mandatory that the architect should not just end these jobs with the drawings.

“He should also be able to supervise the implementation of what he has designed. Because often times he could design a building on two floors and during construction a client says he wants to add two more floors”.

Eboh explained that report has not indicted the institute on any case of building collapse but a lot of building owners engage in what they call direct labor and use people who are not registered.

“That you went to school to read architecture doesn’t make you architect until you have fulfilled the conditions for Licension and certified by the Architects Registration Council of Nigeria then can you be called an Architect and then can you hold responsibilities for whatever you design”.

Meanwhile, Eboh said the retreat would address the issue has of building collapse and ensure synergy with government to nip the menace in the bud.

“It is a source of concern to us and part of what we’ll be discussing at this retreat will be how best to confront the issues. Because it’s not that there are no laws to govern this but the implementation of these laws has been the problem.

“So as an Institute we will think how to restrategise in the retreat to find out what best we can do to assist the government that discharge the responsibility of giving approval for these buildings to make sure that the space under which buildings are erected is such that nobody who does not have any business erecting a building should be in that business in the first place”.

IWD: Feedifuture, Partners Applauds Women’s Participation in Agribusiness, Microenterprises in the Northeast

by Folarin Kehinde March 8, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Kenny Folarin, Abuja

As Nigeria Joins the World to mark the 2022 International Women’s Day, the Feedifuture Nigeria Rural Resilience Activity, Mercy Corps and other partners has applauded the role of women in agribusiness despite daunting challenges experienced in the Northeast Nigeria.

According to them, women in Northeast Nigeria continue to make up the majority of subsistence farmers, owing to lack of access to land, extension services, training, business development services, and financial inclusion opportunities that could significantly enable them to operate at higher levels of agricultural value chains.

They noted that the situation is being excerbated by prolonged insecurity and ongoing conflict in Northeast Nigeria, which continues to weaken local economies and cause thier displacements compounded by the already concerned sexual and gender-based violence that women face, as well as the religious and cultural beliefs that are barriers to women’s participation in market systems.

These challenges has resulted to high poverty levels, food shortages, unemployment, discrimination, and gender inequality; and in spite of them, the resilience Activity is proud of the role that women continue to play in Agribusiness and Microenterprises sub-sectors as the Northeast recovers from the effects of more than 12 years of devastating events.

Meanwhile, the Chief of Party of the Feed the Future Nigeria Rural Resilience Activity, Mrs. Margarita Aswani while speaking on the theme: Gender equality today for a sustainable tomorrow”, noted that the Rural Resilience Activity has commenced the implementation of its Women Economic Empowerment (WEE) intervention aimed at fostering an inclusive Northeast Nigeria.

“We are incredibly proud to be working with such change agents, and with the men in their communities who are no longer gatekeepers, but gate openers, who support us and propel us to move our work forward in women’s economic empowerment”.

Aswani explained that through WEE, the Activity will continue to facilitate access to income generation opportunities and life chances such as skills development and opportunity for women to own assets.

“Through WEE, the Activity will institutionalize demand-driven female-led platforms, such as the North East Women Economic Empowerment Network (NEW-EEN), and bring private sector, research institutions, government agencies, and civil society organizations together to enable market systems actors to continue sharing and disseminating learning, develop partnerships, promote investments and influence policies, practices, or regulations that address common barriers to inclusive growth and investments”.

She added that the Resilience Activity is also hosting a Media for Women Economic Empowerment Roundtable to co-create gender transformative messaging towards an inclusive society.

Aswani however call for stakeholders cooperation in building and promoting gender inclusiveness and growth in agribusiness.

“As we commemorate this year’s International Women’s Day, we call on policy makers, the media, private sector, civil society organizations and donors to join hands in building institutions for promoting accountability, gender responsiveness, and inclusive growth for women in the Agribusiness and Microenterprises sub-sectors”.

IWD: Church, Society Cannot Fully Function Without Women’s Participation – Pastor (Mrs) Ndubuisi

by Folarin Kehinde March 7, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

As Nigerians Joins the World to Commemorate the 2022 International Women’s, the Zonal Mummy, Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG), House of David Zone, Pastor (Mrs) Elizabeth Ndubuisi has said that the church and society cannot fully function without the Participation of women.

Mrs Ndubuisi while speaking exclusively with LEADING REPORTERS in Abuja on Sunday noted that God knows the importance of women and as such God created the male and female from inception.

According to her, woman carries the womb which births the nation, community, church and family, she harbors the children and when she delivers, she brings forth fruit and these fruits spreads spiritually, physically, materially and financially, so the church and society is incomplete without women involvement.

Explaining the role of women, she said ” A woman can be pregnant, going to the market and she comes back to the kitchen trying to feed her children, so without a woman, the nation will not really be what it ought to be in the family even the church at large, so women play a lot of roles and one of those role is to make sure that things work well in the family.

“They take care of the children and nurture them and when a child is well nutured and brought up in the fear of God that child will definitely be what God wants him/her to be.

“Secondly, a woman takes care of the environment, she knows what to do to make sure that things are properly in place, she knows when the family, the church and the nation is in need, God has placed such responsibility in their hands”.

Meanwhile, Mrs Ndubuisi opined that
the disparity between a man and woman is cultural based which is gradually going into extinction considering the vital role of women and call for amendment bill to include more women in the polity.

She however advised that a woman should not feel left behind but should continually fit into the society, as whatever a man can do, a woman can do it better,

Continuing, she stated that in the area of family, they should struggle and ensure that they find something doing just like the male counterpart, they should not leave the work alone for the man to do and take the place of the kitchen

“In the church, they should coordinate and see that the church of God moves forward, they have a lot to do in the kingdom, they should minister to people, go out for evangelism, they don’t need to seat behind.

“In politics, they should actively participate and our husbands also should allow us to compete with them because a woman knows that she carries the image of the family, a woman will like to remain resolute, she will like to project the image of the family and do things in the way of God”. Global Rights Lament Lapses On Regulations, Revenue in Mining Sector

by Folarin Kehinde March 2, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

The Executive Director, Global Rights, Abiodun Baiyewu has expressed worry over lapses in regulations and unaccounted revenue experienced in the mining sector.

Abiodun while speaking in Abuja on Wednesday at a stakeholders workshop on improving fiscal transparency in Nigeria’s mining sector organized by Global Rights in partnership with the Nigeria Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative, NEITI called for transparency in the sector and charged the federal government to execute every project in the pipeline, intensify efforts on going reforms, and ensure that the sector is resuscitated.

According to her, “With more than 40 minerals in commercial quantities thrown across the country paradoxically, the solid mineral sector contributes less than one percent of our national GDP, this is worrisome.

“More than 80 percent of the sector particular in artisanal mining is unregulated and its revenue unaccounted for. We live with the environmental, security and socio-economic consequences of lax oversight and worst still our children will pay the price.

“The big question that we are taking a pause to answer is are we connecting the right dots for the fulfilment of Nigeria’s economic growth and development through solid mineral development. Is our mining road map leading us in the right direction?

Governor of Ekiti State, Kayode Fayemi while delivering his keynote address on the topic, “The Roles of States in Enhancing Transparency and Fiscal Justice in the Nigeria’s Mining Sector,” said one of the challenges confronting Nigeria is the operations of illegal miners.

He said, “According to report, the Nigerian government may have lost trillions in revenue, owing to illegal practices and corrupt activities of companies operating in the mining sector in Nigeria.

“Many schemes through which some companies or miners have defrauded the Nigerian government include non-remittance of revenues, unlicensed mining and evasion of taxes, illegal practices, and incessant smuggling of solid minerals out of the country.

“The need to strengthen the solid minerals sector for improved revenue generation, job creation, and overall value addition, cannot be overemphasized. The devastating impact of the coronavirus pandemic and dwindling oil prices has forced a strategic focus on other sectors considered as having high growth prospects, particularly the mineral resources, which had been neglected for decades.”

He assured that the federal government is not going to sleep on ensuring the mining sector is resuscitated and jobs, employment opportunities are created for youths.

In his remarks, the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Olamilekan Adegbite, bemoaned the amount of gold leaving the country, explaining that more efforts is needed to leverage on adding value locally.

“Gold leaves the country, after that we loose billions of naira. We don’t know the exact figure because all these are illegal activities and you cannot measure those things. Yes, people do smuggle gold out illegally. We are making a lot of efforts to stop that. Because our border is so vast. We are going beyond the Ministry itself to monitor that.

“The whole idea is to add value to the minerals. We don’t want to go the route of the oil and gas where we just export crude oil and bring in the refined products. We want to add value locally. Let people add value, we will be able to create jobs, create wealth and create revenue for government.

“What we are promoting essentially is value addition locally. It is not just for us to mine, it is for us to process locally, retain the jobs, retain the value in Nigeria and that’s what the Ministry is pursuing which is also in line with the African Mining Vision,” he said.

How the Ukraine Crisis Ends, By Henry Kissinger

by Folarin Kehinde March 1, 2022
written by Folarin Kehinde

Public discussion on Ukraine is all about confrontation. But do we know where we are going? In my life, I have seen four wars begun with great enthusiasm and public support, all of which we did not know how to end and from three of which we withdrew unilaterally. The test of policy is how it ends, not how it begins.

Far too often the Ukrainian issue is posed as a showdown: whether Ukraine joins the East or the West. But if Ukraine is to survive and thrive, it must not be either side’s outpost against the other – it should function as a bridge between them.

Russia must accept that to try to force Ukraine into a satellite status, and thereby move Russia’s borders again, would doom Moscow to repeat its history of self-fulfilling cycles of reciprocal pressures with Europe and the United States.

The West must understand that, to Russia, Ukraine can never be just a foreign country. Russian history began in what was called Kievan-Rus. The Russian religion spread from there. Ukraine has been part of Russia for centuries, and their histories were intertwined before then. Some of the most important battles for Russian freedom, starting with the Battle of Poltava in 1709, were fought on Ukrainian soil.

The Black Sea Fleet – Russia’s means of projecting power in the Mediterranean – is based by long-term lease in Sevastopol, in Crimea. Even such famed dissidents as Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn and Joseph Brodsky insisted that Ukraine was an integral part of Russian history and, indeed, of Russia.

The European Union must recognize that its bureaucratic dilatoriness and subordination of the strategic element to domestic politics in negotiating Ukraine’s relationship to Europe contributed to turning a negotiation into a crisis. Foreign policy is the art of establishing priorities.

The Ukrainians are the decisive element. They live in a country with a complex history and a polyglot composition. The Western part was incorporated into the Soviet Union in 1939, when Stalin and Hitler divided up the spoils. Crimea, 60 per cent of whose population is Russian, became part of Ukraine only in 1954 , when Nikita Khrushchev, a Ukrainian by birth, awarded it as part of the 300th-year celebration of a Russian agreement with the Cossacks. The West is largely Catholic; the East largely Russian Orthodox.

The West speaks Ukrainian; the East speaks mostly Russian. Any attempt by one wing of Ukraine to dominate the other – as has been the pattern – would lead eventually to civil war or breakup. To treat Ukraine as part of an East-West confrontation would scuttle for decades any prospect to bring Russia and the West – especially Russia and Europe – into a cooperative international system.

Ukraine has been independent for only 23 years; it had previously been under some kind of foreign rule since the 14th century. Not surprisingly, its leaders have not learned the art of compromise, even less of historical perspective.

The politics of post-independence Ukraine clearly demonstrates that the root of the problem lies in efforts by Ukrainian politicians to impose their will on recalcitrant parts of the country, first by one faction, then by the other. That is the essence of the conflict between Viktor Yanukovych and his principal political rival, Yulia Tymoshenko. They represent the two wings of Ukraine and have not been willing to share power. A wise U.S. policy toward Ukraine would seek a way for the two parts of the country to cooperate with each other. We should seek reconciliation, not the domination of a faction.

Russia and the West, and least of all the various factions in Ukraine, have not acted on this principle. Each has made the situation worse. Russia would not be able to impose a military solution without isolating itself at a time when many of its borders are already precarious. For the West, the demonization of Vladimir Putin is not a policy; it is an alibi for the absence of one.

Putin should come to realize that, whatever his grievances, a policy of military impositions would produce another Cold War. For its part, the United States needs to avoid treating Russia as an aberrant to be patiently taught rules of conduct established by Washington. Putin is a serious strategist – on the premises of Russian history. Understanding U.S. values and psychology are not his strong suits. Nor has understanding Russian history and psychology been a strong point of U.S. policymakers.

Leaders of all sides should return to examining outcomes, not compete in posturing. Here is my notion of an outcome compatible with the values and security interests of all sides:

• Ukraine should have the right to choose freely its economic and political associations, including with Europe.

• Ukraine should not join NATO, a position I took seven years ago, when it last came up.

• Ukraine should be free to create any government compatible with the expressed will of its people. Wise Ukrainian leaders would then opt for a policy of reconciliation between the various parts of their country. Internationally, they should pursue a posture comparable to that of Finland. That nation leaves no doubt about its fierce independence and cooperates with the West in most fields but carefully avoids institutional hostility toward Russia.

It is incompatible with the rules of the existing world order for Russia to annex Crimea. But it should be possible to put Crimea’s relationship to Ukraine on a less fraught basis. To that end, Russia would recognize Ukraine’s sovereignty over Crimea. Ukraine should reinforce Crimea’s autonomy in elections held in the presence of international observers. The process would include removing any ambiguities about the status of the Black Sea Fleet at Sevastopol.

These are principles, not prescriptions. People familiar with the region will know that not all of them will be palatable to all parties. The test is not absolute satisfaction but balanced dissatisfaction. If some solution based on these or comparable elements is not achieved, the drift toward confrontation will accelerate. The time for that will come soon enough.
